Passive Design for Residential Buildings in Arid Desert Climates: Insights from the Solar Decathlon Middle East

This study investigates the effectiveness of passive design in low-rise residential buildings located in arid desert climates, using the Dubai Solar Decathlon Middle East (SDME) competition as a case study. This full-scale experiment offers a unique opportunity to evaluate design solutions under controlled, realistic conditions; prescriptive, modeled performance; and monitored performance assessments. The prescriptive assessment reviews geometry, orientation, envelope thermal properties, and shading. Most houses adopt compact forms, with envelope-to-volume and envelope-to-floor area ratios averaging 1 and 3.7, respectively, and window-to-wall ratios of approximately 17%, favoring north-facing openings to optimize daylight while reducing heat gain. Shading is strategically applied, horizontal on south façades and vertical on east and west. The thermal properties significantly exceed the local code requirements, with wall performance up to 80% better than that mandated. The modeled assessment uses Building Energy Models (BEMs) to simulate the impact of prescriptive measures on energy performance. Three variations are applied: assigning minimum local code requirements to all the houses to isolate the geometry (baseline); removing shading; and applying actual envelope properties. Geometry alone accounts for up to 60% of the variation in cooling intensity; shading reduces loads by 6.5%, and enhanced envelopes lower demand by 14%. The monitored assessment uses contest-period data. Indoor temperatures remain stable (22–25 °C) despite outdoor fluctuations. Energy use confirms that houses with good designs and airtightness have lower cooling loads. Airtightness varies widely (avg. 14.5 m3/h/m2), with some well-designed houses underperforming due to construction flaws. These findings highlight the critical role of passive design as the first layer for improving the energy performance of the built environment and advancing toward net-zero targets, specifically in arid desert climates. This study proposes a coupled constitutive model that captures the anisotropic failure characteristics and damage evolution of nickel-based single-crystal (SX) superalloys under various temperature conditions. The model accounts for both creep rate and material damage evolution, enabling accurate prediction of the typical three-stage creep curves, macroscopic fracture morphologies, and microstructural features under uniaxial tensile creep for specimens with different crystallographic orientations. Creep behavior of SX superalloys was simulated under multiple orientations and various temperature-stress conditions using the proposed model. The resulting creep curves aligned well with experimental observations, thereby validating the model’s feasibility and accuracy. Furthermore, a finite element model of cylindrical specimens was established, and simulations of the macroscopic fracture morphology were performed using a user-defined material subroutine. By integrating the rafting theory governed by interfacial energy density, the model successfully predicts the rafting morphology of the microstructure at the fracture surface for different crystallographic orientations. The proposed model maintains low programming complexity and computational cost while effectively predicting the creep life and deformation behavior of anisotropic materials. The model accurately captures the three-stage creep deformation behavior of SX specimens and provides reliable predictions of stress fields and microstructural changes at critical cross-sections. The model demonstrates high accuracy in life prediction, with all predicted results falling within a ±1.5× error band and an average error of 14.6%. Full article

Despite rapid advances in robot learning, the coordination of closed-loop manipulation in cluttered environments remains a challenging and relatively underexplored problem. We present a novel two-level hierarchical architecture for a depth vision-equipped robotic arm that integrates pushing, grasping, and high-level decision making. Central to our approach is a prioritised action–selection mechanism that facilitates efficient early-stage learning via behaviour cloning (BC), while enabling scalable exploration through reinforcement learning (RL). A high-level decision neural network (DNN) selects between grasping and pushing actions, and two low-level action neural networks (ANNs) execute the selected primitive. The DNN is trained with RL, while the ANNs follow a hybrid learning scheme combining BC and RL. Notably, we introduce an automated demonstration generator based on oriented bounding boxes, eliminating the need for manual data collection and enabling precise, reproducible BC training signals. We evaluate our method on a challenging manipulation task involving five closely packed cubic objects. Our system achieves a completion rate (CR) of 100%, an average grasping success (AGS) of 93.1% per completion, and only 7.8 average decisions taken for completion (DTC). Comparative analysis against three baselines—a grasping-only policy, a fixed grasp-then-push sequence, and a cloned demonstration policy—highlights the necessity of dynamic decision making and the efficiency of our hierarchical design. In particular, the baselines yield lower AGS (86.6%) and higher DTC (10.6 and 11.4) scores, underscoring the advantages of content-aware, closed-loop control. These results demonstrate that our architecture supports robust, adaptive manipulation and scalable learning, offering a promising direction for autonomous skill coordination in complex environments. To enhance the molten salt corrosion resistance of Ni200 alloy plasma arc welds, the welds were subjected to tensile deformation followed by heat treatment. The grain boundary character distribution (GBCD) was analyzed using electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) in conjunction with orientation imaging microscopy (OIM). A constant-temperature corrosion test at 900 °C was conducted to evaluate the impact of GBCD on the corrosion resistance of the welds. Results demonstrated that after processing with 6% tensile deformation, and annealing at 950 °C for 30 min, the fraction of low-ΣCSL grain boundaries increased from 1.2% in the as-welded condition to 57.3%, and large grain clusters exhibiting Σ3n orientation relationships were formed. During the heat treatment, an increased number of recrystallization nucleation sites led to a reduction in average grain size from 323.35 μm to 171.38 μm. When exposed to a high-temperature environment of 75% Na2SO4-25% NaCl mixed molten salt, the corrosion behavior was characterized by intergranular attack, with oxidation and sulfidation reactions resulting in the formation of NiO and Ni3S2. The corrosion resistance of Grain boundary engineering (GBE)-treated samples was significantly superior to that of Non-GBE samples, with respective corrosion rates of 0.3397 mg/cm2·h and 0.8484 mg/cm2·h. These findings indicate that grain boundary engineering can effectively modulate the grain boundary character distribution in Ni200 alloy welds, thereby enhancing their resistance to molten salt corrosion. This study investigates the flow dynamics and local scour around a Reef Cube® artificial reef deployed in Torbay, UK, using computational fluid dynamics. The flow is modelled using Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations with a k-ω SST turbulence model. A novel hydro-morphodynamic model employing the generalized internal boundary method in HELYX (OpenFOAM-based) is used to simulate scour development. Model performance was validated against experimental data for flow fields, bed shear stress, and local scour. Flow simulations across various scenarios demonstrated that parameters such as the orientation angle and arrangement of Reef Cubes significantly influence flow patterns, bed shear stress, and habitat suitability. The hydro-morphodynamic model was used to simulate scouring around a reef cube in the Torbay marine environment. Results indicate that typical tidal flow velocity flow in the region is barely sufficient to initiate sediment motion, whereas extreme flow events, represented by doubling the mean flow velocity, significantly accelerate scour development, producing holes up to ten times deeper. These findings underscore the importance of considering extreme flow conditions in scour analyses due to their potential impact on the stability and failure risk of AR projects. Full article

Pyrochlore Bi1.8Mn0.5Ni0.5Ta2O9-Δ (sp.gr. Fd-3m, a = 10.5038(9) Å) was synthesized by the solid-phase reaction method and characterized by vibrational and X-ray spectroscopy. According to scanning electron microscopy, the ceramics are characterized by a porous microstructure formed by randomly oriented oblong grains. The average crystallite size determined by X-ray diffraction is 65 nm. The charge state of transition element cations in the pyrochlore was analyzed by soft X-ray spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation. For mixed pyrochlore, a characteristic shift of Bi4f and Ta4f and Ta5p spectra to the region of lower energies by 0.25 and 0.90 eV is observed compared to the binding energy in Bi2O3 and Ta2O5 oxides. XPS Mn2p spectrum of pyrochlore has an intermediate energy position compared to the binding energy in MnO and Mn2O3, which indicates a mixed charge state of manganese (II, III) cations. Judging by the nature of the Ni2p spectrum of the complex oxide, nickel ions are in the charge state of +(2+ζ). The relative permittivity of the sample in a wide temperature (up to 350 °C) and frequency range (25–106 Hz) does not depend on the frequency and exhibits a constant low value of 25. The minimum value of 4 × 10−3 dielectric loss tangent is exhibited by the sample at a frequency of 106 Hz. The activation energy of conductivity is 0.7 eV. The electrical behavior of the sample is modeled by an equivalent circuit containing a Warburg diffusion element. Full article

This study examines the effectiveness of energy-based models for fatigue life prediction of additively manufactured acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS)/graphene nanoplatelet (GNP) composites. The effects of varying GNP weight percentages and filament raster orientations on the fatigue life of the samples were investigated theoretically. The required stress and strain values for use in energy-based models were obtained by solving two sets of Neuber and Ramberg–Osgood equations, utilizing the available values of notch strength reduction factors at each load level and the average Young modulus for each composite material. Results revealed that none of the studied energy-based models could accurately predict the fatigue life of the samples across the entire high- and low-cycle fatigue regimes, with strong dependence on the stress ratio (R). Instead, a novel fatigue life prediction model was developed by combining two existing energy-based models, incorporating stress ratio dependence for cases with negative mean stress. This model was tested for R values roughly between −0.22 and 0. Results showed that, for all samples at each raster orientation, most of the predicted fatigue lives fell within the upper and lower bounds, with a factor of ±2 across the entire range of load levels. These findings highlight the reliability of the proposed model for a wide range of R values when mean stress is negative. Full article

The quality of life (QoL) perception has been studied in neurological diseases; however, there is limited information linking brain morphological characteristics, QoL, and cognition. Human behavior and perception are associated with specific brain areas that interact through diffuse electrochemical networking. We used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to analyze the brain region volume (BRV) correlation with the scores of Rand’s 36-item Short Form Survey (SF-36) and cognitive domains (memory and dementia status). We analyzed data from 420 adult participants in the Maracaibo Aging Study (MAS). Principal component analysis with oblimin axis rotation was used to gather redundant information from brain parcels and SF-36 domains. Canonical correlation was used to analyze the relationships between SF-36 domains and BRV (adjusted for intracranial cavity), as well as sex, age, education, obesity, and hypertension. The average age (±SD) of subjects was 56 ± 11.5 years; 71% were female; 39% were obese; 12% had diabetes, 52% hypertension, and 7% dementia. No sex-related differences were found in memory and orientation scores, but women had lower QoL scores. The 1st and 2nd canonical correlation roots support the association of SF-36 domains (except social functioning and role emotional) and total brain volume, frontal lobe volume, frontal pole, lateral orbital lobe, cerebellar, and entorhinal areas. Other variables, including age, dementia, memory score, and systolic blood pressure, had a significant influence. The results of this study demonstrate significant correlations between BRV and SF-36 components, adjusted for covariates. The frontal lobe and insula were associated with the mental health component; the lateral-orbital frontal lobe and entorhinal area were correlated with the physical component. Full article

Hybrid Experimental–Machine Learning Study on the Mechanical Behavior of Polymer Composite Structures Fabricated via FDM

This study explores the mechanical behavior of polymer and composite specimens fabricated using fused deposition modeling (FDM), focusing on three material configurations: acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), carbon fiber-reinforced polyphthalamide (PPA/Cf), and a sandwich-structured composite. A systematic experimental plan was developed using the Box–Behnken design (BBD) to investigate the effects of material type (MT), infill pattern (IP), and printing direction (PD) on tensile and flexural strength. Experimental results showed that the PPA/Cf material with a “Cross” IP printed “Flat” yielded the highest mechanical performance, achieving a tensile strength of 75.8 MPa and a flexural strength of 102.3 MPa. In contrast, the lowest values were observed in ABS parts with a “Grid” pattern and “Upright” orientation, recording 37.8 MPa tensile and 49.5 MPa flexural strength. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) results confirmed that all three factors significantly influenced both outputs (p < 0.001), with MT being the most dominant factor. Machine learning (ML) algorithms, Bayesian linear regression (BLR), and Gaussian process regression (GPR) were employed to predict mechanical performance. GPR achieved the best overall accuracy with R2 = 0.9935 and MAPE = 11.14% for tensile strength and R2 = 0.9925 and MAPE = 12.96% for flexural strength. Comparatively, the traditional BBD yielded slightly lower performance with MAPE = 13.02% and R2 = 0.9895 for tensile strength. Validation tests conducted on three unseen configurations clearly demonstrated the generalization capability of the models. Based on actual vs. predicted values, the GPR yielded the lowest average prediction errors, with MAPE values of 0.54% for tensile and 0.45% for flexural strength. In comparison, BLR achieved 0.79% and 0.60%, while BBD showed significantly higher errors at 1.76% and 1.32%, respectively. Full article

Image segmentation is a foundation for autonomous driving frameworks that empower vehicles to explore and navigate their surrounding environment. It gives a fundamental setting to the dynamic cycles by dividing the image into significant parts like streets, vehicles, walkers, and traffic signs. Precise segmentation ensures safe navigation and the avoidance of collisions, while following the rules of traffic is very critical for seamless operation in self-driving cars. The most recent deep learning-based image segmentation models have demonstrated impressive performance in structured environments, yet they often fall short when applied to the complex and unpredictable conditions encountered in autonomous driving. This study proposes an Adaptive Ensemble Attention (AEA) mechanism within a Generative Adversarial Network architecture to deal with dynamic and complex driving conditions. The AEA integrates the features of self, spatial, and channel attention adaptively and powerfully changes the amount of each contribution as per input and context-oriented relevance. It does this by allowing the discriminator network in GAN to evaluate the segmentation mask created by the generator. This explains the difference between real and fake masks by considering a concatenated pair of an original image and its mask. The adversarial training will prompt the generator, via the discriminator, to mask out the image in such a way that the output aligns with the expected ground truth and is also very realistic. The exchange of information between the generator and discriminator improves the quality of the segmentation. In order to check the accuracy of the proposed method, the three widely used datasets BDD100K, Cityscapes, and KITTI were selected to calculate average IoU, where the value obtained was 89.46%, 89.02%, and 88.13% respectively. These outcomes emphasize the model’s effectiveness and consistency. Overall, it achieved a remarkable accuracy of 98.94% and AUC of 98.4%, indicating strong enhancements compared to the State-of-the-art (SOTA) models. Full article

To address the challenges of model uncertainty, strong nonlinearities, and controller tuning in high-precision trajectory tracking for hydraulic servo systems, this paper proposes a hierarchical GA-PID-MPC fusion strategy. The architecture integrates three functional layers: a Genetic Algorithm (GA) for online parameter optimization, a Model Predictive Controller (MPC) for future-oriented planning, and a Proportional–Integral–Derivative (PID) controller for fast feedback correction. These modules are dynamically coordinated through an adaptive cost-aware blending mechanism based on real-time performance evaluation. The MPC module operates on a linearized state–space model and performs receding-horizon control with weights and horizon length θ=[q,r,Tp] tuned by GA. In parallel, the PID controller is enhanced with online gain projection to mitigate nonlinear effects. The blending coefficient σ(t) is adaptively updated to balance predictive accuracy and real-time responsiveness, forming a robust single-loop controller. Rigorous theoretical analysis establishes global input-to-state stability and H performance under average dwell-time constraints. Full article

To address the modeling complexity and multi-objective collaborative optimization challenges in multi-depot and multiple unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) delivery task planning, this paper proposes a bi-layer planning framework, which comprehensively considers resource constraints, multi-depot coordination, and the coupling characteristics of path execution. The novelty of this work lies in the seamless integration of an enhanced genetic algorithm and tailored swarm optimization within a unified two-tier architecture. The upper layer tackles the task assignment problem by formulating a multi-objective optimization model aimed at minimizing economic costs, delivery delays, and the number of UAVs deployed. The Enhanced Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (ENSGA-II) is developed, incorporating heuristic initialization, goal-oriented search operators, an adaptive mutation mechanism, and a staged evolution control strategy to improve solution feasibility and distribution quality. The main contributions are threefold: (1) a novel ENSGA-II design for efficient and well-distributed task allocation; (2) an improved PSO-based path planner with chaotic initialization and adaptive parameters; and (3) comprehensive validation demonstrating substantial gains over baseline methods. The lower layer addresses the path planning problem by establishing a multi-objective model that considers path length, flight risk, and altitude variation. An improved particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is proposed by integrating chaotic initialization, linearly adjusted acceleration coefficients and maximum velocity, a stochastic disturbance-based position update mechanism, and an adaptively tuned inertia weight to enhance algorithmic performance and path generation quality. Simulation results under typical task scenarios demonstrate that the proposed model achieves an average reduction of 47.8% in economic costs and 71.4% in UAV deployment quantity while significantly reducing delivery window violations. The framework exhibits excellent capability in multi-objective collaborative optimization. The ENSGA-II algorithm outperforms baseline algorithms significantly across performance metrics, achieving a hypervolume (HV) value of 1.0771 (improving by 72.35% to 109.82%) and an average inverted generational distance (IGD) of 0.0295, markedly better than those of comparison algorithms (ranging from 0.0893 to 0.2714). The algorithm also demonstrates overwhelming superiority in the C-metric, indicating outstanding global optimization capability in terms of distribution, convergence, and the diversity of the solution set. Moreover, the proposed framework and algorithm are both effective and feasible, offering a novel approach to low-altitude urban logistics delivery problems. Full article

In rice detection tasks, accurate identification of leaf streaks, pest and disease distribution, and spikelet hierarchies relies on high-quality images to distinguish between texture and hierarchy. However, existing images often suffer from texture blurring and contour shifting due to equipment and environment limitations, which affects the detection performance. In view of the fact that pests and diseases affect the whole situation and tiny details are mostly localized, we propose a rice image reconstruction method based on an adaptive two-branch heterogeneous structure. The method consists of a low-frequency branch (LFB) that recovers global features using orientation-aware extended receptive fields to capture streaky global features, such as pests and diseases, and a high-frequency branch (HFB) that enhances detail edges through an adaptive enhancement mechanism to boost the clarity of local detail regions. By introducing the dynamic weight fusion mechanism (CSDW) and lightweight gating network (LFFN), the problem of the unbalanced fusion of frequency information for rice images in traditional methods is solved. Experiments on the 4× downsampled rice test set demonstrate that the proposed method achieves a 62% reduction in parameters compared to EDSR, 41% lower computational cost (30 G) than MambaIR-light, and an average PSNR improvement of 0.68% over other methods in the study while balancing memory usage (227 M) and inference speed. In downstream task validation, rice panicle maturity detection achieves a 61.5% increase in mAP50 (0.480 → 0.775) compared to interpolation methods, and leaf pest detection shows a 2.7% improvement in average mAP50 (0.949 → 0.975). This research provides an effective solution for lightweight rice image enhancement, with its dual-branch collaborative mechanism and dynamic fusion strategy establishing a new paradigm in agricultural rice image processing. Forest harvesting can alter sedimentary processes in catchments by reducing vegetation cover and exposing the soil surface. To mitigate these effects, post-harvest residue management is commonly used, though its effectiveness needs individual evaluation. This study assessed how windrowed harvest residues influence structural sediment connectivity in two forest catchments in south-central Chile with a Mediterranean climate. Using digital terrain models and the Index of Connectivity, scenarios with and without windrows were compared. Despite similar windrow characteristics, effectiveness varied between catchments. In catchment N01 (12.6 ha, average slope 0.28 m m−1), with 13.6% windrow coverage, connectivity remained unchanged, but in contrast, catchment N02 (14 ha, average slope 0.27 m m−1), with 21.9% coverage, showed a significant connectivity reduction. A key factor was windrows’ orientation: 83.9% aligned with contour lines in N02 versus 58.6% in N01. Distance to drainage channels also played a role, with the decreasing effect of connectivity at 50–60 m in N02. Bootstrap analysis confirmed significant differences between catchments. These results suggest that windrow configuration, particularly contour alignment, may be more critical than coverage percentage. For effective connectivity reduction, especially on moderate to steep slopes, forest managers should prioritize contour-aligned windrows. This study enhances our understanding of structural sediment connectivity and offers practical insights for sustainable post-harvest forest management. Full article

The Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei (BTH) region is one of China’s most water-scarce yet economically vital areas, facing increasing challenges due to climate change and intensive human activities. This study develops an integrated Water–Food–Energy–Ecology (WFEE) simulation and regulation model to assess the system’s stability under coordinated development scenarios and extreme climate stress. A 500-year precipitation series was reconstructed using historical drought and flood records combined with wavelet analysis and machine learning models (Random Forest and Support Vector Regression). Results show that during the reconstructed historical megadrought (1633–1647), with average precipitation anomalies reaching −20% to −27%, leading to a regional water shortage rate of 16.9%, food self-sufficiency as low as 44.7%, and a critical reduction in ecological river discharge. Under future recommended scenario with enhanced water conservation, reclaimed water reuse, and expanded inter-basin transfers, the region could maintain a water shortage rate of 2.6%, achieve 69.3% food self-sufficiency, and support ecological water demand. However, long-term water resource degradation could still reduce food self-sufficiency to 62.9% and ecological outflows by 20%. The findings provide insights into adaptive water management, highlight the vulnerability of highly coupled systems to prolonged droughts, and support regional policy decisions on resilience-oriented water infrastructure planning.
