Herein, a bi-functional composite photocatalyst was synthesized by integrating carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphitic carbon nitride (GCN) via a facile electrostatic self-assembly strategy. The resulting CNTs/GCN composite served dual roles as both a solid emulsifier and a photocatalyst, enabling highly efficient photocatalytic benzyl alcohol oxidation within a Pickering emulsion system. The relationship between emulsion droplet size and solid emulsifier dosage was investigated and optimized. The enhanced photocatalytic function was supported by an improved photocurrent response and reduced charge-transfer resistance, attributed to superior charge separation efficiency. Consequently, the benzyl alcohol conversion efficiency achieved in the Pickering emulsion system (58.9%) was three-fold of that observed in a traditional oil–water non-emulsion system (19.0%). Key active species were identified as photoholes, and an interfacial reaction mechanism was proposed. This work provides a new approach for extending photocatalytic applications in aqueous environments to diverse organic conversion reactions through the construction of multifunctional photocatalysts. At present, various advanced technologies for field development based on gas-enhanced oil recovery (EOR) methods are widely applied worldwide. These include high-pressure gas injection (hydrocarbon gases, nitrogen, flue gases), water-alternating-gas (WAG) injection, and carbon dioxide (CO2) flooding. This study presents the results of filtration experiments investigating the application of gas EOR methods using core samples from a heavy oil reservoir. The primary objective of these experiments was to determine the oil displacement factor and analyze changes in interfacial tension upon injection of different gas agents. The following gases were utilized for modeling gas EOR processes: nitrogen (N2), carbon dioxide (CO2), and hydrocarbon gases (methane, propane). The core samples used in the study were obtained from the East Moldabek heavy oil field in Kazakhstan. Based on the results of the filtration experiments, carbon dioxide (CO2) injection was identified as the most effective gas EOR method in terms of increasing the oil displacement factor, achieving an incremental displacement factor of 5.06%. Other gas injection methods demonstrated lower efficiency. Full article

The stability of nitrogen gas foam hinders its applicability in petroleum applications. Fly ash nanoparticles and clay improve the N2 foam stability, and flue gas foams provide a cost-effective solution for carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS). This study examines the stability, volume, and bubble structure of foams formed using two anionic surfactants, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS), along with the cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), selected for their comparable interfacial tension properties. Analysis of foam stability and volume and bubble structure was conducted under different CO2/N2 mixtures, with half-life and initial foam volume serving as the evaluation criteria. The impact of fly ash and clay on SDS-N2 foam was also evaluated. The results showed that foams created with CTAB, SDBS, and SDS exhibit the greatest stability in pure nitrogen, attributed to low solubility in water and limited gas diffusion. SDS showed the highest foam strength attributable to its comparatively low surface tension. The addition of fly ash and clay significantly improved foam stability by migrating to the gas–liquid interface, creating a protective barrier that reduced drainage. Both nano fly ash and clay improved the half-life of nitrogen foam by 11.25 times and increased the foam volume, with optimal concentrations identified as 5.0 wt% for fly ash and 3.0 wt% for clay. This research emphasizes the importance of fly ash nanoparticles in stabilizing foams, therefore optimizing a foam system for enhanced oil recovery (EOR). Full article

Ternary choline chloride-based deep eutectic solvents (TDESs) exhibit unique physicochemical properties, including lower viscosities, lower melting points, higher thermal stabilities, and enhanced solvations compared to binary deep eutectic solvents (BDESs). Although BDESs have been widely studied, the addition of a third component in TDESs offers opportunities to further optimize their performance. This review aims to evaluate the physicochemical properties of TDESs and highlight their potential applications in sustainable industrial processes compared to BDESs. A comprehensive analysis of the existing literature was conducted, focusing on TDES properties, such as phase behavior, density, viscosity, pH, conductivity, and the effect of water, along with their applications in various fields. TDESs demonstrated superior physicochemical characteristics compared to BDESs, including improved solvation and thermal stability. Their applications in biomass conversion, CO2 capture, heavy oil upgrading, refrigeration gases, and as solvents/catalysts in organic reactions show significant promise for enhancing process efficiency and sustainability. Despite their advantages, TDESs face challenges including limited predictive models, potential instability under certain conditions, and scalability hurdles. Overall, TDESs offer significant potential for advancing sustainable and efficient chemical processes for industrial applications. Full article

The Effect of Water- and Ultrasonic Bath Systems on Bioactive Compounds and Fatty Acid Compositions of Unroasted and Roasted Pumpkin Seeds

In this study, the effects of water bath and ultrasonic bath systems on bioactive properties, phenolic components and fatty acid profiles of unroasted and roasted pumpkin seeds were investigated. It is thought that determining the bioactive components, phenolic constituents and fatty acid profiles of unroasted and roasted pumpkin seeds will lead to the establishment of usage norms according to their composition characteristics. Total phenolic quantities of the pumpkin seed extracts obtained by water bath extraction of the seeds were defined to be between 7.58 (control) and 11.55 (25 min) and 10.20 (control) and 17.18 mg GAE/100 g (50 min), respectively. Phenolic content increased by 50% after 50 min of ultrasonic extraction, indicating the efficiency of this method. Also, total flavonoid amounts increased about 55% after 25 min of ultrasonic extraction, indicating the efficiency of this method. It was observed that the catechin contents of unroasted pumpkin seeds obtained in water and ultrasonic baths decreased significantly at the 50th minute of extraction compared to the control. The antioxidant activity values (DPPH) of roasted pumpkin seeds treated in water- and ultrasonic bath systems increased by approximately 10% compared to the control at 50 min of sonication in both systems, respectively. Also, the 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid amounts of the extracts obtained by both extraction systems of roasted pumpkin seeds were determined between 9.85 (50 min) and 17.22 mg/100 g (control) and 11.17 (25 min) and 13.74 mg/100 g (50 min), respectively. The linoleic acid amounts of unroasted pumpkin seed oils extracted in water- and ultrasonic baths varied between 52.34 (50 min) and 53.33% (control) to 52.90 (50 min) and 53.04% (control), respectively. The linoleic acid values of the roasted pumpkin seed oils were established to be between 52.30 (50 min) and 52.84 (25 min) and 52.32 (50 min) and 53.46% (25 min), respectively. In general, the phenolic compound amounts of roasted pumpkin seeds were higher than those of unroasted ones. The fatty acid amounts of pumpkin seed oils extracted with an ultrasonic bath were generally slightly higher than those extracted with a water bath. In future studies, changes in the phytochemical and bioactive properties of pumpkin seed oils obtained by applying different roasting techniques and extraction methods will be investigated. This study, conducted in Southern Italy in 2023, investigated the effects of a dynamic agrivoltaics (AV) system on microclimate, water consumption, plant growth, and essential oil yield in six medicinal species: lavender (Lavandula angustifolia L. ‘Royal purple’), lemmon thyme (Thymus citriodorus (Pers.) Schreb. ar. ‘Aureus’), common thyme (Thymus vulgaris L.), rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus Spenn. ‘Severn seas’), mint (Mentha spicata L. ‘Moroccan’), and sage (Salvia officinalis L. subsp. Officinalis). Due to the rotating solar panels, two distinct ground zones were identified: a consistently shaded area under the panels (UP), and a partially shaded area between the panels (BP). These were compared to an adjacent full-sun control area (T). Microclimate parameters, including solar radiation, air and leaf infrared temperature, and soil temperature, were recorded throughout the cultivation season. Reference evapotranspiration (ETO) was calculated using Turc’s method, and crop evapotranspiration (ETC) was estimated with species-specific crop coefficients (KC). Results showed significantly lower microclimatic values in the UP plot compared to both BP and especially T, resulting in ETC reductions of 81.1% in UP and 13.1% in BP relative to T, an advantage in water-scarce environments. Growth and yield responses varied among species and treatment plots. Except for mint, all species showed a significant reduction in fresh biomass (40.1% to 48.8%) under the high shading of UP compared to T. However, no biomass reductions were observed in BP. Notably, essential oil yields were higher in both UP and BP plots (0.60–2.63%) compared to the T plot (0.51–1.90%). These findings demonstrate that dynamic AV systems can enhance water use efficiency and essential oil yield, offering promising opportunities for sustainable, high-quality medicinal crop production in arid and semi-arid regions. During the process of oil and gas drilling, due to the existence of pores or micro-cracks, drilling fluid is prone to invade the formation. Under the action of hydration expansion of clay in the formation and liquid pressure, wellbore instability occurs. In order to reduce the wellbore instability caused by drilling fluid intrusion into the formation, this study proposed a method of forming a dynamic hydrogen bond cross-linked network weak gel structure with modified nano-silica and P(AM-AAC). The plugging performance of the drilling fluid and the performance of inhibiting the hydration of shale were evaluated through various experimental methods. The results show that the gel composite system (GCS) effectively optimizes the plugging performance of drilling fluid. The 1% GCS can reduce the linear expansion rate of cuttings to 14.8% and increase the recovery rate of cuttings to 96.7%, and its hydration inhibition effect is better than that of KCl and polyamines. The dynamic cross-linked network structure can significantly increase the viscosity of drilling fluid. Meanwhile, by taking advantage of the liquid-phase viscosity effect and the physical blocking effect, the loss of drilling fluid can be significantly reduced. Mechanism studies conducted using zeta potential measurement, SEM analysis, contact angle measurement and capillary force assessment have shown that modified nano-silica stabilizes the wellbore by physically blocking the nano-pores of shale and changing the wettability of the shale surface from hydrophilic to hydrophobic when the contact angle exceeds 60°, thereby reducing capillary force and surface free energy. Meanwhile, the dynamic cross-linked network can reduce the seepage of free water into the formation, thereby significantly lowering the fluid loss of the drilling fluid. This research provides new insights into improving the stability of the wellbore in drilling fluids. Full article

The cosmetic industry is growing at an impressive rate worldwide. In the cosmetic field, natural-origin ingredients represent the new frontier in this industry. Among the main components of cosmetics, lipids, emulsifiers, rheological modifiers, preservatives, colorants, and antioxidants can be found. These compounds form emulsions, which are among the main cosmetic formulations. An important aspect in this regard is the evaluation of emulsions’ stability over time and emulsions’ production methodology. In this paper, a comparison is made between two emulsion production technologies, the Standard and the “One-Pot” methods, through the characterization of the raw material ABWAX® Revomul, a multifunctional wax for cosmetic use which consists of a low-melting structuring wax of vegetal origin (Rhus wax) and a natural emulsifier (Polyglyceril-3 Stearate). First, we evaluated the affinity between the wax raw materials and emollients of different chemical nature; then, we analyzed the impact of the production method on the emulsions to identify similarities and differences. ABWAX® Revomul demonstrated a high level of effectiveness in regard to stabilizing water-in-oil emulsions. This study suggests that from an industrial point of view, the application of the two procedures allows products with different characteristics to be obtained, consequently allowing a specific method to be chosen to obtain the desired product. The efficiency of electric motors is highly dependent on their operating temperature, with lower temperatures contributing to enhanced performance, reliability, and extended service life. This study presents a comprehensive review of state-of-the-art cooling technologies and evaluates their impact on the thermal behavior of a commercial motor–generator system in high-demand applications. A baseline model of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) was developed using MotorCAD 2023® software, which was supported by reverse engineering techniques to accurately replicate the motor’s physical and thermal characteristics. Subsequently, multiple cooling strategies were simulated under consistent operating conditions to assess their effectiveness. These strategies include conventional axial water jackets as well as advanced oil-based methods such as shaft cooling and direct oil spray to the windings. The integration of these systems in hybrid configurations was also explored to maximize thermal efficiency. Simulation results reveal that hybrid cooling significantly reduces the temperature of critical components such as stator windings and permanent magnets. This reduction in thermal stress improves current efficiency, power output, and torque capacity, enabling reliable motor operation across a broader range of speeds and under sustained high-load conditions. The findings highlight the effectiveness of hybrid cooling systems in optimizing both thermal management and operational performance of electric machines. Full article

Recently, essential rose oils and rose products have gained increasing importance in both the cosmetic and food industries, as well as in the composition of medicinal products. We investigated the in vitro antiviral activity of essential oil and floral water from Rosa damascena Mill against herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) infection in rabbit retinal cells (RRCs). The composition of the main chemical components in the rose essential oil was determined by means of gas chromatographic analysis. The effect on the viral replication cycle was determined using the cytopathic effect (CPE) inhibition assay. The virucidal activity, the effect on the adsorption stage of the virus to the host cell, and the protective effect on healthy cells were evaluated using the endpoint dilution method. The effects were determined as deviation in the viral titer, Δlg, for the treated cells from the one for the untreated viral control. The identified main active components of rose oil are geraniol (28.73%), citronellol (21.50%), nonadecane (13.13%), nerol (5.51%), heneicosane (4.87%), nonadecene (3.93), heptadecane (2.29), farnesol (2.11%), tricosane (1.29%), eicosane (1.01%), and eugenol (0.85%). The results demonstrated that both rose products do not have a significant effect on the virus replication but directly affect the viral particles and reduce the viral titer by Δlg = 3.25 for floral water and by Δlg = 3.0 for essential oil. Significant inhibition of the viral adsorption stage was also observed, leading to a decrease in the viral titers by Δlg = 2.25 for floral water and by Δlg = 2.0 for essential oil. When pretreating healthy cells with rose products, both samples significantly protected them from subsequent infection with HSV-1. This protective effect was more pronounced for the oil (Δlg = 2.5) compared to the one for the floral water (Δlg = 2.0). We used the in silico molecular docking method to gain insight into the mechanism of hindrance of viral adsorption by the main rose oil compounds (geraniol, citronellol, nerol). These components targeted the HSV-1 gD interaction surface with nectin-1 and HVEM (Herpesvirus Entry Mediator) host cell receptors, at N-, C-ends, and N-end, respectively. The aim of the study was to evaluate the use of sunflower and sesame oilseed press cakes, which are by-products of oil extraction, as functional ingredients in cookie production. The quality characteristics of these by-products were assessed, including water activity, pH, total phenolic content, and antioxidant activity, and HPLC analysis of the phenolic compounds was performed. Subsequently, cookies were prepared by replacing wheat flour with 30% or 50% press cake. The addition of sunflower press cake significantly increased the total phenolic content (up to 8.6 mg GAE/g dm) and antioxidant activity (up to 75.9%) in the cookies, whereas adding sesame press cake showed a less pronounced effect, reaching 0.91 g GAE/g dm and 8.9% for total phenolic content and antioxidant activity, respectively. HPLC analysis indicated that chlorogenic acid and its derivatives dominated in sunflower-enriched cookies, while sesame samples contained lignans such as sesamol and sesamin. Our study shows that 50% substitution improves the health-promoting properties of cookies and does not differ significantly from the 30% level in consumer sensory evaluations. These findings support the use of sunflower and sesame press cakes as valuable ingredients in food applications. This represents an important step toward developing healthier and more nutritious food products while supporting the principles of the circular economy through the upcycling of valuable raw materials. Low-commercial-value natural pistachios (broken, closed, or immature) can be revalorised through oil extraction, obtaining a high-quality oil and partially defatted flour as by-product. This study evaluated the techno-functional and nutritional properties of the flours obtained by hydraulic press (HP) and single-screw press (SSP) systems, combined with pretreatment at 25 °C and 60 °C. The extraction method significantly influenced flour’s characteristics, underscoring the need to tailor processing conditions to the specific technological requirements of each food application. HP-derived flours presented lighter colour, greater tocopherol content, and higher water absorption capacity (up to 2.75 g/g), suggesting preservation of hydrophilic proteins. SSP-derived flours showed higher concentration of protein (44 g/100 g), fibre (12 g/100 g), and minerals, and improved emulsifying properties, enhancing their suitability for emulsified products. Pretreatment at 25 °C enhanced functional properties such as swelling power (~7.0 g/g) and water absorption index (~5.7 g/g). The SSP system achieved the highest oil extraction yield, with no significant effect of pretreatment temperature. The oils extracted showed high levels of unsaturated fatty acids, particularly oleic acid (~48% of ω-9), highlighting their nutritional and industrial value. The findings support the valorisation of pistachio oil extraction by-products as functional food ingredients, offering a promising strategy for reducing food waste and promoting circular economy approaches in the agri-food sector. Wastewater generation is a growing concern in the preliminary treatment of heavy crude oil and tar sand. The separation of fine oil droplets from water by flotation is a critical process in the production of bitumen from tar sand. The flow structure from a high-resolution simulation of a single air macrobubble (>3 mm diameter) rising through water in the presence of a very dilute dispersion of mono-sized oil microdroplets (30 μm) under quiescent conditions is presented. A combined model of computational fluid dynamics (CFD), a volume of fluid (VOF) multiphase approach, and the discrete phase method (DPM) was developed to simulate bubble dynamics, the trajectories of the dispersed oil droplet, and the interaction between the air bubble and the oil droplet in quiescent water. The CFD–VOF–DPM combined model reproduced the interacting dynamics of the bubble and oil droplets in water at the bubble–droplet scale. With an extremely large diameter ratio between the bubble and the dispersed oil droplet, this model clearly demonstrated that the dominant mechanism for the interaction was the hydrodynamic capture of oil droplets in the wake of a rising air macrobubble. The entrainment of the oil droplets into the wake of the rising bubbles was strongly influenced by the bubble’s shape. Full article

Upon reaching stabilized production in waterflooded reservoirs, waterflood performance curves are conventionally used to predict technically recoverable reserves (TRRs). However, as reservoirs enter high water-cut stages, the relationship between the relative permeability ratio and saturation becomes nonlinear, causing deflection in waterflood performance curves. This leads to systematic overestimation of both predicted TRR and ultimate recovery factors. To overcome these limitations in conventional TRR prediction methods, this study establishes a novel relative permeability ratio-saturation relationship based on characteristic relative permeability curve behaviors. The proposed model is validated for three distinct fluid-rock interaction types. We further develop a permeability-driven forecasting model for oil production rates and water cuts. Comparative analyses with a conventional waterflood curve methodology demonstrate significant accuracy improvements. The results show that while traditional methods predict TRR ranging from 78.40 to 92.29 million tons, our model yields 70.73 million tons—effectively resolving overestimation issues caused by curve deflection during high water-cut phases. This approach establishes a robust framework for determining critical development parameters, including economic field lifespan, strategy adjustments, and ultimate recovery factor. Full article

The cosmetics industry has been seeking to develop products with renewable natural ingredients to reduce the use of or even replace synthetic substances. Biosurfactants can help meet this demand. These natural compounds are renewable, biodegradable, and non-toxic or have low toxicity, offering minimal risk to humans and the environment, which has attracted the interest of an emerging consumer market and, consequently, the cosmetics industry. The aim of the present study was to produce a biosurfactant from the yeast Starmerella bombicola ATCC 22214 cultivated in a mineral medium containing 10% soybean oil and 5% glucose. The biosurfactant reduced the surface tension of water from 72.0 ± 0.1 mN/m to 33.0 ± 0.3 mN/m after eight days of fermentation. The yield was 53.35 ± 0.39 g/L and the critical micelle concentration was 1000 mg/L. The biosurfactant proved to be a good emulsifier of oils used in cosmetic formulations, with emulsification indices ranging from 45.90 ± 1.69% to 68.50 ± 1.10%. The hydrophilic–lipophilic balance index demonstrated the wetting capacity of the biosurfactant and its tendency to form oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions, with 50.0 ± 0.20% foaming capacity. The biosurfactant did not exhibit cytotoxicity in the MTT assay or irritant potential. Additionally, an antioxidant activity of 58.25 ± 0.32% was observed at a concentration of 40 mg/mL. The compound also exhibited antimicrobial activity against various pathogenic microorganisms. The characterisation of the biosurfactant using magnetic nuclear resonance and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy revealed that the biomolecule is a glycolipid with an anionic nature. The results demonstrate that biosurfactant produced in this work has potential as an active biotechnological ingredient for innovative, eco-friendly cosmetic formulations. Full article
