The aviation industry is increasingly prioritizing sustainability, with significant focus on the development of Hybrid-Electric Aircraft (HEA). By integrating electric motors with conventional combustion engines, HEA systems offer substantial environmental benefits and operational efficiency improvements. However, the successful implementation of HEA technologies is contingent upon advancements in power converter systems. This paper addresses the critical need for sustainable aviation solutions by examining the challenges and opportunities associated with High-Efficiency Aviation Power (HEAP) technology. Specifically, the study investigates the role of power converters in Hybrid-Electric Aircraft Propulsion systems, with a particular emphasis on addressing key concerns such as weight reduction, compact design, and system reliability. A comparative analysis of three converter topologies is conducted: two established configurations serve as baseline references, while a third topology, a modular, fault-tolerant DC-DC converter, is proposed for the first time in the context of hybrid-electric aircraft. Its novelty lies in the system-level use of redundancy to offer an inherent architectural advantage against cosmic-ray-induced failures a critical aviation reliability challenge that existing converter topologies do not address through hardware redundancy. This qualitative reliability advantage is presented as an architectural feature, pending quantitative validation through future hardware testing and mean-time-between-failures (MTBF) analysis. This exploration is essential for identifying the most suitable configuration for HEA integration, with the goal of overcoming challenges related to lightweight design, high efficiency, and reliability. The findings contribute to the advancement of more sustainable and efficient aviation solutions by demonstrating the potential of the proposed converter architecture. Full article

The large-scale integration of distributed energy resources poses numerous challenges to distribution networks. At present, multi-terminal flexible interconnection has become a key development trend for active distribution networks integrated with high-penetration distributed energy resources. Conventional unified power flow controllers (UPFCs) are mainly designed for high-voltage transmission networks and lack distribution-adapted control strategies, making it difficult for them to meet the networking requirements for multi-terminal interconnection. Moreover, most existing studies still focus on two-terminal devices, soft open points and improved UPFC topologies for transmission networks. Existing multi-port schemes mostly adopt only shunt-side structures without series compensation branches, which fail to regulate voltage magnitude and phase difference, thus failing to suppress closing inrush currents and mitigate busbar voltage sags. Meanwhile, such schemes struggle with three-phase imbalance, feeder load imbalance and bidirectional power flow fluctuations in distribution networks, and lack adaptive power allocation capability among multiple ports. To solve the above problems, this paper proposes a VSC-based series–shunt hybrid multi-terminal flexible interconnection converter. The proposed topology consists of one series-side VSC and n − 1 shunt-side VSCs connected through a common DC capacitor; it removes the shunt-side transformer, and effectively reduces cost and volume, while achieving phase shifting, voltage regulation and power flow control. Meanwhile, dual closed-loop PI cross-decoupling control and a flexible closing strategy are adopted to independently regulate the active and reactive power of each feeder, adapt to three-phase imbalance and load imbalance conditions, suppress inrush currents, and realize flexible power mutual support among multiple ports, thereby significantly enhancing adaptability to distribution networks. This paper presents a distributed V2G-enabled multiport DC charging system with a hierarchical charging management strategy. Unlike conventional architectures based on centralized power converter cabinets, the proposed system distributes bidirectional power converters within individual multiport dispensers, each equipped with a local charging power management device. This architecture improves system scalability, fault tolerance, and operational flexibility while enabling vehicle-level charging and V2G services. A hierarchical control framework is introduced, consisting of high-level optimal charging scheduling, mid-level power coordination among distributed dispensers, and low-level converter control. Key elements include modular power units that can be dynamically configured and expanded, providing a cost-effective and adaptable solution for growing EV markets. Experimental results obtained from a 45 kW modular DC charging prototype demonstrate an efficiency improvement of up to 2% at rated power compared to a non-modular charger. In contrast, the optimized charging strategy achieves an overall charging cost reduction of approximately 11% and a peak load demand reduction of up to 31%. Furthermore, stable bidirectional power flow, effective power sharing, and total harmonic distortion within regulatory limits are experimentally validated during both charging and V2G operation. The prototype is implemented to validate the proposed charging system in the laboratory environment. Full article

A triple phase shift (TPS) modulation strategy is proposed for a three-port active bridge (TAB) converter in shipboard zonal DC systems. Unlike traditional multi-port converters, the TAB realizes voltage conversion and bidirectional power conversion under TPS modulation. It exhibits superior performance in reducing control complexity, enhancing fault-tolerant capability, and extending the zero-voltage switching (ZVS) region under normal and fault operation modes. To further enhance its conversion efficiency, a deep reinforcement learning optimization approach based on the deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) algorithm is introduced to adaptively optimize TPS control parameters and minimize the overall power losses of the converter. To verify the proposed TPS modulation and DDPG-based optimization strategy for the TAB converter topology, a corresponding hardware prototype is built and experimentally tested under different operating conditions. Experimental results demonstrate that the TAB architecture with DDPG optimization effectively reduces current stress and power loss, boosting the converter’s maximum efficiency to 96.9% under normal mode and a 3% efficiency gain after fault isolation. In light of the global issue of “Carbon Neutrality”, a high proportion of renewable energy integrated into modern power systems has become the key to energy strategic transformation, which has escalated the demand for high-gain, high-power converters for DC energy conversion. In this paper, a non-isolated double-layer multi-port parallel-connected high-gain DC–DC conversion system has been proposed. The system consists of two energy layers: the upper layer is designed as a non-isolated high-gain three-port DC conversion topology, which includes two energy inputs and one output port, and the bottom layer is a three-port constant current output module. The output ports of these layers are connected in parallel, while the input ports are independent. Thus, both high output voltage gain and power capacity were fulfilled for the renewable power application condition. The system is capable of operating in both input-parallel–output-parallel (IPOP) and multi-input–independent-output-parallel (MIIOP) modes, thereby enabling multi-port high-gain DC power conversion. Detailed analysis of the operation strategies under a switching cycle for both energy layers is presented. A small signal was introduced to establish the mathematical model of both energy topologies. In order to simultaneously regulate the output voltage and achieve dynamic current sharing between the layers, an adaptive current-sharing control strategy was developed based on the established system models. The proposed control strategy can control the output voltage through the upper-layer topology and dynamically allocates output current between the layers based on the output power level, which will effectively enhance the system’s power rating. The simulation mode was built in the PSIM environment, open-loop simulations were carried out for obtaining system characteristics, and closed-loop simulations were conducted for control efficiency validation. Finally, a 2000-W experimental prototype was developed based on the digital control center dsPIC33FJ64GS606. Open-loop and closed-loop experiments were carried out for system performance evaluation. Both simulation and experimental results successfully evaluated the power transfer performance and control system performance of the proposed system, and a peak efficiency of 95.7% under 10 times voltage gain was achieved. Multiport DC–AC converters are widely used in photovoltaic-energy storage–charging systems, but traditional two-stage schemes face challenges in circuit cost and efficiency improvements. To address this issue, a novel three-port single-stage DC–AC converter is proposed for grid-connected applications. The proposed converter integrates two DC ports and one AC port through circuit multiplexing, eliminating the high-voltage DC bus and reducing system complexity. An unfolding bridge is employed at the AC port, and full bridge circuits are used at DC ports, reducing the number of high-frequency switches. The proposed single-stage topology inherently achieves galvanic isolation and bidirectional power conversion. To achieve accurate grid current regulation and wide-range zero-voltage-switching, a multiple-phase-shift modulation method is developed to ensure a sinusoidal current waveform. The effectiveness of the proposed converter and modulation method is verified through simulation results, demonstrating a peak efficiency of 97% and a total harmonic distortion of 2.91%. Full article

In energy-harvesting storage systems, in order to guarantee the correct operation and integration of its parts into the system, different power converters must be used. Using several stages increases energy processing and therefore decreases the overall efficiency of the system. In this paper, an integrated multi-port converter with galvanic isolation is proposed. It allows the transfer of energy between the solar panel, the battery, and the user using the fewest possible stages, thus maximizing efficiency. Operating in three modes depending on the battery’s state of charge, solar radiation and load conditions, the converter can conduct electric power between its ports. The proposal was validated in a 1 kW prototype performing the different modes of operation. It should be noted that a PV emulator (ETS150X5.6C-PVF) was used in the experimental setup; by means of this device, conditions such as solar irradiance and temperature, which affect the energy generation of PV panels, were controlled. In addition, the transformer employed in the prototype implementation was handmade; therefore, its design could be improved to obtain better performance. The experimental results show efficiencies exceeding 94%, and an analysis of the distribution of losses in the circuit was carried out. Also, a comparison with previous proposals is presented, showing competitive features. Full article

The increasing demand for high-power electric vehicle charging systems with Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) capability highlights the need for modular, scalable power converters. This paper proposes a hierarchical control strategy for a high-power, multi-port electric vehicle charging station. The system, based on a Series-Parallel Modular Multilevel Converter (SP-MMC) with isolated modules, is managed by a coordinated control strategy that integrates proportional-integral-resonant regulators, nearest-level control with voltage sorting, and single-phase-shifted modulation. The proposed system enables simultaneous, independent regulation of multiple bidirectional, isolated direct current ports while maintaining grid-side power quality and internal variables of the SP-MMC. The proposed control is validated using real-time Model-In-the-Loop (MIL) simulations that include sequential port activation, bidirectional power flow, and charging operation. MIL results demonstrate stable operation with controlled DC-link voltage ripple, accurate per-port current tracking, and near-unity grid power factor under multi-port operation. Full article

In this paper, we propose a novel concept of a modular, multiport, single-stage, bidirectional, isolated, three-phase AC-DC converter system. This new system is realized using add-ons to a standard voltage source inverter, including both grid-connected AC-DC converters, like PWM rectifiers, and AC-drive DC-AC inverters. The proposed add-on converters provide isolated DC ports and can be installed into existing inverters of the abovementioned types, with no need for any modification of their topology or control system. Moreover, the add-on converters provide a minimum transistor count and high efficiency. The efficiency of the proposed add-on converters can be further improved by switching the type of pulse width modulation (PWM) scheme based on their operating point. The proposed converter system is validated for a power of 20 kW, an output voltage of 500–800 V DC, and a 40 kHz PWM frequency. Full article

With the rapid advancement of hydrogen-based direct current microgrid (H2-DCMG) technology, multi-port converters (MPCs) have emerged as the pivotal interface for integrating renewable power generation, energy storage, and diverse DC loads. This paper systematically reviews the current research status and development trends of isolated and non-isolated MPC topologies within hydrogen-based DC microgrids. Firstly, it analyses the interface requirements for typical distributed energy sources (DER) such as photovoltaics (PV), wind turbines (WT), fuel cells (FC), battery energy storage (BESS), proton exchange membrane electrolyzers (PEMEL), and supercapacitors (SC). Secondly, it classifies and evaluates existing MPC topologies, clarifying the structural characteristics, technical advantages, and challenges faced by each type. Results indicate that non-isolated topologies offer advantages such as structural simplicity, high efficiency, and high power density, making them more suitable for residential and small-scale microgrid applications. Isolated topologies, conversely, provide electrical isolation and modular scalability, rendering them appropriate for high-voltage electrolytic hydrogen production and industrial scenarios with stringent safety requirements. Finally, the paper identifies current research gaps and proposes that future efforts should focus on exploring topology optimization, system integration design, and reliability enhancement. The increased penetration of power electronics interfaced resources in modern power systems is unlocking new opportunities and challenges. New concepts like multiport converters can further enhance the efficiency and power density of power electronics-based solutions. The triple active bridge is an isolated multiport converter with soft switching and high voltage gain that can integrate different sources, storage, and loads, or act as a building block for modular systems. However, the triple active bridge suffers from power flow cross-coupling, which affects its dynamic performance if it is not removed or mitigated. Unlike the extensive literature on two-port power converters, studies on modeling and control comparison for multiport converters are still lacking. Therefore, this paper presents and compares different modeling and decoupling control approaches applied to the triple active bridge converter, highlighting their benefits and limitations. The converter operation and modulation are introduced, and modeling and control strategies based on the single phase shift power flow control are detailed. The switching model, generalized full-order average model, and the reduced-order model derivations are presented thoroughly, and a comparison reveals that first harmonic approximations can be detrimental when modeling the triple active bridge. Furthermore, the model accuracy is highly sensitive to the operating point, showing that the generalized average model better represents some dynamics than the lossless reduced-order model. Furthermore, three decoupling control strategies are derived aiming to mitigate cross-coupling effects to ensure decoupled power flow and improve system stability. To assess their performance, the TAB converter is subjected to power and voltage disturbances and parameter uncertainty. A comprehensive comparison reveals that linear PI controllers with an inverse decoupling matrix can effectively control the TAB but exhibit large settling time and voltage deviations due to persistent cross-coupling. Furthermore, the decoupling matrix is highly sensitive to inaccuracies in the converter’s model parameters. In contrast, linear active disturbance rejection control and sliding mode control based on a linear extended state observer achieve rapid stabilization, demonstrating strong decoupling capability under disturbances. Furthermore, both control strategies demonstrate robust performance under parameter uncertainty. Full article

The traditional DC distribution grid is evolving into a meshed structure to create additional energy exchange paths and integrate the rapidly growing renewable energy sources. However, existing converter stations lack sufficient power flow controllability, necessitating the development of multiport power electronic transformers to address potential power flow congestion and high loss issues. This paper proposes a compact multi-terminal modular-multilevel-converter-based power electronic transformer (M3C-PET). This device enables flexible power flow regulation of the connected feeders through adopting two small-capacity power flow control modules (PFCMs). The simple structure and reduced switching count make the proposed PET more competitive and prominent and more cost-effective. Furthermore, this paper elaborates on the operational principle of the proposed device and presents a multilayer power balancing control strategy along with a power flow control scheme. These control strategies are designed based on the internal and external energy distribution mechanism of the proposed PET. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed topology and control schemes are rigorously validated through both a MATLAB/Simulink simulation model and a scaled-down experimental prototype. The integration of renewable energy systems and electrified transportation requires advanced energy storage solutions capable of providing both high energy density and fast dynamic response. Hybrid energy storage systems offer a promising approach by combining complementary battery chemistries, exploiting their respective strengths while mitigating individual limitations. This study presents the design, modeling, and optimization of a hybrid energy storage system composed of two high-energy lithium nickel manganese cobalt batteries and one high-power lithium titanate oxide battery, interconnected through a triple dual-active multi-port converter. A nonlinear model predictive control strategy was employed to optimally distribute battery currents while respecting constraints such as state of charge limits, current bounds, and converter efficiency. Equivalent circuit models were used for real-time state of charge estimation, and converter losses were explicitly included in the optimization. The main contributions of this work are threefold: (i) verification of the model predictive control strategy in diverse applications, including residential renewable energy systems with photovoltaic generation and electric vehicles following the World Harmonized Light-duty Vehicle Test Procedure driving cycle; (ii) explicit inclusion of the power converter model in the system dynamics, enabling realistic coordination between batteries and power electronics; and (iii) incorporation of converter efficiency into the cost function, allowing for simultaneous optimization of energy losses, battery stress, and operational constraints. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed model predictive control strategy effectively balances power demand, extends system lifetime by prioritizing lithium titanate oxide battery during transient peaks, and preserves lithium nickel manganese cobalt cell health through smoother operation. Overall, the results confirm that the proposed hybrid energy storage system architecture and control strategy enables flexible, reliable, and efficient operation across diverse real-world scenarios, providing a pathway toward more sustainable and durable energy storage solutions. A multi-port conversion system that connects photovoltaic (PV) arrays, battery energy storage (BES), and an electric vehicle (EV) to a single-phase grid offers a flexible solution for smart homes. By integrating Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) and Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) technologies, the system supports bidirectional energy flow, optimizing usage, improving grid stability, and supplying backup power. The proposed four-port converter consists of an interleaved bidirectional DC-DC converter for high-voltage BES, a bidirectional buck–boost DC-DC converter for EV charging and discharging, a DC-DC boost converter with MPPT for PV, and a grid-tied inverter. Its non-isolated structure ensures high efficiency, compact design, and fewer switches, making it suitable for residential applications. A state-of-charge (SoC)-based power management strategy coordinates operation among PV, BES, and EV in both on-grid and off-grid modes. It reduces reliance on EV energy when supporting V2G and V2H, while SoC balancing between BES and EV extends lifetime and lowers current stress. A 7.5 kVA system was simulated in MATLAB/Simulink to validate feasibility. Two scenarios were studied: PV, BES, and EV with V2G supporting the grid and PV, BES, and EV with V2H providing backup power in off-grid mode. Tests under PV fluctuations and load variations confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed design. The system exhibited a fast transient response of 0.05 s during grid-support operation and maintained stable voltage and frequency in off-grid mode despite PV and load fluctuations. Its protection scheme disconnected overloads within 0.01 s, while harmonic distortions in both cases remained modest and complied with EN50610 standards. Full article

Given the climate change observed in the past few decades, sustainable development and the use of renewable energy sources are urgent. In this scenario, hydrogen production through electrolyzers is a promising renewable source and energy vector because of its ultralow greenhouse emissions and high energy content. Hydrogen can be used in a variety of applications, from transportation to electricity generation, contributing to the diversification of the energy matrix. In this context, this paper presents an autonomous isolated DC microgrid system for generating and storing electrical energy to be exclusively used for feeding an electrolyzer hydrogen production plant, which has been retrofitted for green hydrogen production. Experimental verification was performed at Itaipu Parquetec, which consists of an alkaline electrolysis unit directly integrated with a battery energy storage system and renewable sources (e.g., photovoltaic and wind) by using an isolated DC microgrid concept based on DC/DC and AC/DC converters. Experimental results revealed that the new electrolyzer DC microgrid increases the system’s overall efficiency in comparison to the legacy thyristor-based power supply system by 26%, and it autonomously controls the energy supply to the electrolyzer under optimized conditions with an extremely low output current ripple. Another advantage of the proposed DC microgrid is its ability to properly manage the startup and shutdown process of the electrolyzer plant under power generation outages.
