Seismic Damage Pattern Analysis of Long-Span CFST Arch Bridges Based on Damper Configuration Strategies

Variations in damper configuration strategies have a direct impact on the seismic damage patterns of long-span deck-type concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) arch bridges. This study developed an analysis and evaluation framework to identify the damage category, state, and progression sequence of structural components. The framework aims to investigate the influence of viscous dampers on the seismic response and damage patterns of long-span deck-type CFST arch bridges under near-fault pulse-like ground motions. The effects of different viscous damper configuration strategies and design parameters on seismic responses of long-span deck-type CFST arch bridges were systematically investigated, and the preferred configuration and parameter set were identified. The influence of preferred viscous damper configurations on seismic damage patterns of long-span deck-type CFST arch bridges was systematically analyzed through the established analysis and evaluation frameworks. The results indicate that a relatively optimal reduction in bridge response can be achieved when viscous dampers are simultaneously installed at both the abutments and the approach piers. Minimum seismic responses were attained at a damping exponent α = 0.2 and damping coefficient C = 6000 kN/(m/s), demonstrating stability in mitigating vibration effects on arch rings and bearings. In the absence of damper implementation, the lower chord arch foot section is most likely to experience in-plane bending failure. The piers, influenced by the coupling effect between the spandrel construction and the main arch ring, are more susceptible to damage as their height decreases. Additionally, the end bearings are more prone to failure compared to the central-span bearings. Implementation of the preferred damper configuration strategy maintains essentially consistent sequences in seismic-induced damage patterns of the bridge, but the peak ground motion intensity causing damage to the main arch and spandrel structure is significantly increased. This strategy enhances the damage-initiation peak ground acceleration (PGA) for critical sections of the main arch, while concurrently reducing transverse and longitudinal bending moments in pier column sections. The proposed integrated analysis and evaluation framework has been validated for its applicability in capturing the seismic damage patterns of long-span deck-type CFST arch bridges. Full article

To improve collision risk prediction in high-traffic coastal waters and support real-time decision-making in maritime navigation, this study proposes a regional collision risk prediction system integrating the Computed Distance at Collision (CDC) method with an Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS). Unlike Distance at Closest Point of Approach (DCPA), which depends on the position of Global Positioning System (GPS) antennas, Computed Distance at Collision (CDC) directly reflects the actual hull shape and potential collision point. This enables a more realistic assessment of collision risk by accounting for the hull geometry and boundary conditions specific to different ship types. The system was designed and validated using ship motion simulations involving bulk and container ships across varying speeds and crossing angles. The CDC method was used to define collision, almost-collision, and near-collision situations based on geometric and hydrodynamic criteria. Subsequently, the FIS–CDC model was constructed using the ANFIS by learning patterns in collision time and distance under each condition. A total of four input variables—ship speed, crossing angle, remaining time, and remaining distance—were used to infer the collision risk index (CRI), allowing for a more nuanced and vessel-specific assessment than traditional CPA-based indicators. Simulation results show that the time to collision decreases with higher speeds and increases with wider crossing angles. The bulk carrier exhibited a wider collision-prone angle range and a greater sensitivity to speed changes than the container ship, highlighting differences in maneuverability and risk response. The proposed system demonstrated real-time applicability and accurate risk differentiation across scenarios. This research contributes to enhancing situational awareness and proactive risk mitigation in Maritime Autonomous Surface Ship (MASS) and Vessel Traffic System (VTS) environments. Future work will focus on real-time CDC optimization and extending the model to accommodate diverse ship types and encounter geometries. Full article

Many commercial wearable sensor systems typically rely on a single continuous cardiorespiratory sensing modality, photoplethysmography (PPG), which suffers from inherent biases (i.e., differences in skin tone) and noise (e.g., motion and pressure artifacts). In this research, we present a wearable device that provides robust estimates of cardiorespiratory variables by combining three physiological signals from the upper arm: multiwavelength PPG, single-sided electrocardiography (SS-ECG), and bioimpedance plethysmography (BioZ), along with an inertial measurement unit (IMU) providing 3-axis accelerometry and gyroscope information. We evaluated the multimodal device on 16 subjects by its ability to estimate heart rate (HR) and breathing rate (BR) in the presence of various static and dynamic noise sources (e.g., skin tone and motion). We proposed a hierarchical approach that considers the subject’s skin tone and signal quality to select the optimal sensing modality for estimating HR and BR. Our results indicate that, when estimating HR, there is a trade-off between accuracy and robustness, with SS-ECG providing the highest accuracy (low mean absolute error; MAE) but low reliability (higher rates of sensor failure), and PPG/BioZ having lower accuracy but higher reliability. When estimating BR, we find that fusing estimates from multiple modalities via ensemble bagged tree regression outperforms single-modality estimates. These results indicate that multimodal approaches to cardiorespiratory monitoring can overcome the accuracy–robustness trade-off that occurs when using single-modality approaches. Full article

The 2020 southern Puerto Rico earthquake sequence highlighted the severe seismic vulnerability of informally constructed two-story reinforced concrete (RC) houses. This study examines the failure mechanisms of these structures and assesses the effectiveness of first-floor RC shear-wall retrofitting. Nonlinear pushover and dynamic time–history analyses were performed using fiber-based distributed plasticity models for RC frames and nonlinear macro-elements for second-floor masonry infills, which introduced a significant inter-story stiffness imbalance. A bi-directional seismic input was applied using spectrally matched, near-fault pulse-like ground motions. The findings for the as-built structures showed that stiffness mismatches between stories, along with substantial strength and stiffness differences between orthogonal axes, resulted in concentrated plastic deformations and displacement-driven failures in the first story—consistent with damage observed during the 2020 earthquakes. Retrofitting the first floor with RC shear walls notably improved the performance, doubling the lateral load capacity and enhancing the overall stiffness. However, the retrofitted structures still exhibited a concentration of inelastic action—albeit with lower demands—shifted to the second floor, indicating potential for further optimization. To enable safe and effective human–robot collaboration (HRC) in smart manufacturing, it is critical to seamlessly integrate sensing, cognition, and prediction into the robot controller for real-time awareness, response, and communication inside a heterogeneous environment (robots, humans, and equipment). The proposed approach takes advantage of the prediction capabilities of nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) to execute safe path planning based on feedback from a vision system. To satisfy the requirements of real-time path planning, an embedded solver based on a penalty method is applied. However, due to tight sampling times, NMPC solutions are approximate; therefore, the safety of the system cannot be guaranteed. To address this, we formulate a novel safety-critical paradigm that uses an exponential control barrier function (ECBF) as a safety filter. Several common human–robot assembly subtasks have been integrated into a real-life HRC assembly task to validate the performance of the proposed controller and to investigate whether integrating human pose prediction can help with safe and efficient collaboration. The robot uses OptiTrack cameras for perception and dynamically generates collision-free trajectories to the predicted target interactive position. Results for a number of different configurations confirm the efficiency of the proposed motion planning and execution framework, with a 23.2% reduction in execution time achieved for the HRC task compared to an implementation without human motion prediction. In order to study the problem of obvious wall thinning in the wellbore caused by proppant backflow and sand production under throttling conditions in tight gas wells. Based on the gas-phase control equation, particle motion equation, and erosion model, the wellbore erosion model is established. The distribution law of pressure, temperature, and velocity trace fields under throttling conditions is analyzed, and the influences of different throttling pressures, particle diameters, and particle mass flows on wellbore erosion are analyzed. The flow field at the nozzle changes drastically, and there is an obvious pressure drop, temperature drop, and velocity rise. When the surrounding gas is completely mixed, the physical quantity gradually stabilizes. The erosion shape of the wellbore outlet wall has a point-like distribution. The closer to the throttle valve outlet, the more intense the erosion point distribution is. Increasing the inlet pressure and particle mass flow rate will increase the maximum erosion rate, and increasing the particle diameter will reduce the maximum erosion rate. The particle mass flow rate has the greatest impact on the maximum erosion rate, followed by the particle diameter. The erosion trend was predicted using multiple regression model fitting of the linear interaction term. The research results can provide a reference for the application of downhole throttling technology and wellbore integrity in tight gas exploitation. Full article

Differential Mechanism of 3D Motions of Falling Debris in Tunnels Under Extreme Wind Environments Induced by a Single Train and by Trains Crossing

The extended operation of high-speed railways has led to an increased incidence of tunnel lining defects, with falling debris posing a significant safety threat. Within tunnels, single-train passage and trains-crossing events constitute the most frequent operational scenarios, both generating extreme aerodynamic environments that alter debris trajectories from free fall. To systematically investigate the aerodynamic differences and underlying mechanisms governing falling debris behavior under these two distinct conditions, a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model (debris–air–tunnel–train) was developed using an improved delayed detached eddy simulation (IDDES) turbulence model. Comparative analyses focused on the translational and rotational motions as well as the aerodynamic load coefficients of the debris in both single-train and trains-crossing scenarios. The mechanisms driving the changes in debris aerodynamic behavior are elucidated. Findings reveal that under single-train operation, falling debris travels a greater distance compared with trains-crossing conditions. Specifically, at train speeds ranging from 250–350 km/h, the average flight distances of falling debris in the X and Z directions under single-train conditions surpass those under trains crossing conditions by 10.3 and 5.5 times, respectively. At a train speed of 300 km/h, the impulse of CFx and CFz under single-train conditions is 8.6 and 4.5 times greater than under trains-crossing conditions, consequently leading to the observed reduction in flight distance. Under the conditions of trains crossing, the falling debris is situated between the two trains, and although the wind speed is low, the flow field exhibits instability. This is the primary factor contributing to the reduced flight distance of the falling debris. However, it also leads to more pronounced trajectory deviations and increased speed fluctuations under intersection conditions. The relative velocity (CRV) on the falling debris surface is diminished, resulting in smaller-scale vortex structures that are more numerous. Consequently, the aerodynamic load coefficient is reduced, while the fluctuation range experiences an increase. Full article

This study presents a detailed experimental comparison of the rotordynamic and thermal performance of automotive turbochargers supported by two distinct hydrodynamic bearing configurations: fully floating ring bearings (FFRBs) and semi-floating ring bearings (SFRBs). While both designs are widely used in commercial turbochargers, they exhibit significantly different dynamic behaviors due to differences in ring motion and fluid film interaction. A cold air-driven test rig was employed to assess vibration and temperature characteristics across a range of controlled lubricant conditions. The test matrix included oil supply pressures from 2 bar (g) to 4 bar (g) and temperatures between 30 °C and 70 °C. Rotor speeds reached up to 200 krpm (thousands of revolutions per minute), and data were collected using a high-speed data acquisition system, triaxial accelerometers, and infrared (IR) thermal imaging. Rotor vibration was characterized through waterfall and Bode plots, while jump speeds and thermal profiles were analyzed to evaluate the onset and severity of instability. The results demonstrate that the FFRB configuration is highly sensitive to oil supply parameters, exhibiting strong subsynchronous instabilities and hysteresis during acceleration–deceleration cycles. In contrast, the SFRB configuration consistently provided superior vibrational stability and reduced sensitivity to lubricant conditions. Changes in lubricant supply conditions induced a jump speed variation in floating ring bearing (FRB) turbochargers that was approximately 3.47 times larger than that experienced by semi-floating ring bearing (SFRB) turbochargers. Furthermore, IR images and oil outlet temperature data confirm that the FFRB system experiences greater heat generation and thermal gradients, consistent with higher energy dissipation through viscous shear. This study provides a comprehensive assessment of both bearing types under realistic high-speed conditions and highlights the advantages of the SFRB configuration in improving turbocharger reliability, thermal performance, and noise suppression. The findings support the application of SFRBs in high-performance automotive systems where mechanical stability and reduced frictional losses are critical. Full article

Firstly, this paper reviews the fundamental theories of solid surface wettability and contact angle hysteresis. Subsequently, it further introduces four typical wettability-engineered surfaces with low hysteresis (superhydrophobic, superamphiphobic, super-slippery, and liquid-like smooth surfaces). Finally, it focuses on the latest research progress in the field of droplet manipulation on open planar surfaces with engineered wettability. To achieve droplet manipulation, the core driving forces primarily stem from natural forces guided by bioinspired gradient surfaces or the regulatory effects of external fields. In terms of bioinspired self-propelled droplet movement, this paper summarizes research inspired by natural organisms such as desert beetles, cacti, self-aligning floating seeds of emergent plants, or water-walking insects, which construct bioinspired special gradient surfaces to induce Laplace pressure differences or wettability gradients on both sides of droplets for droplet manipulation. Moreover, this paper further analyzes the mechanisms, advantages, and limitations of these self-propelled approaches, while summarizing the corresponding driving force sources and their theoretical formulas. For droplet manipulation under external fields, this paper elaborates on various external stimuli including electric fields, thermal fields, optical fields, acoustic fields, and magnetic fields. Among them, electric fields involve actuation mechanisms such as directly applied electrostatic forces and indirectly applied electrocapillary forces; thermal fields influence droplet motion through thermoresponsive wettability gradients and thermocapillary effects; optical fields cover multiple wavelengths including near-infrared, ultraviolet, and visible light; acoustic fields utilize horizontal and vertical acoustic radiation pressure or acoustic wave-induced acoustic streaming for droplet manipulation; the magnetic force acting on droplets may originate from their interior, surface, or external substrates. Based on these different transport principles, this paper comparatively analyzes the unique characteristics of droplet manipulation under the five external fields. Finally, this paper summarizes the current challenges and issues in the research of droplet manipulation on the open planar surfaces and provides an outlook on future development directions in this field. In this paper, an uncertainty optimization method based on the adaptive hybrid correlation Kriging surrogate model is proposed to optimize the ply angles of laminated spherical-conical shells. First, equations of motion of laminated spherical-conical shells are constructed to calculate the vibration characteristics. Then, this paper proposes a Kriging surrogate model with adaptive weight hybrid correlation functions and validates its accuracy. Based on this framework, the weight distribution of the surrogate model for uncertain parameters in laminated spherical-conical shells under different ply angles is analyzed. To address the uncertainty optimization problem in laminated spherical-conical shell structures, an Improved Multi-objective Salp Swarm Algorithm is developed, and its optimization efficacy is systematically validated. Furthermore, an adaptive hybrid correlation Kriging surrogate model is reconstructed, incorporating both uncertainty parameters and design variables as inputs, with the peak vibration displacement and fundamental frequency serving as the output responses. The uncertainty optimization results confirm that the proposed methodology, along with the enhanced Kriging modeling strategy, exhibits both applicability and computational efficiency for such engineering applications. As the range of applications for amphibious robots expands, higher demands are being placed on their working time and working range. This paper proposed a power supply system for an amphibious robot based on wave energy generation, which can convert wave energy into electric energy to enhance endurance. First, the no-load induced electromotive force, magnetic line distribution vector diagrams, and magnetic density cloud diagrams of the cylindrical and flat generators were compared by finite element simulation, which determined that the cylindrical structure has better power generation performance. Then, the electromagnetic parameters of the cylindrical generator were analyzed using Ansys Maxwell, and the final dimensions were determined. Finally, the wave motion was simulated using a swing motor, and the effects of different cutting speeds for the actuator before and after rectification, as well as series-parallel capacitance on the power generation performance of the designed generator, were experimentally analyzed. This provides a potential solution to enhance the working time and working range of amphibious robots. Full article

To improve the accuracy of Japanese finger-spelled character recognition using an RGB camera, we focused on feature design and refinement of the recognition method. By leveraging angular features extracted via MediaPipe, we proposed a method that effectively captures subtle motion differences while minimizing the influence of background and surrounding individuals. We constructed a large-scale dataset that includes not only the basic 50 Japanese syllables but also those with diacritical marks, such as voiced sounds (e.g., “ga”, “za”, “da”) and semi-voiced sounds (e.g., “pa”, “pi”, “pu”), to enhance the model’s ability to recognize a wide variety of characters. In addition, the application of a change-point detection algorithm enabled accurate segmentation of sign language motion boundaries, improving word-level recognition performance. These efforts laid the foundation for a highly practical recognition system. However, several challenges remain, including the limited size and diversity of the dataset and the need for further improvements in segmentation accuracy. Future work will focus on enhancing the model’s generalizability by collecting more diverse data from a broader range of participants and incorporating segmentation methods that consider contextual information. Ultimately, the outcomes of this research should contribute to the development of educational support tools and sign language interpretation systems aimed at real-world applications. Full article

Medium and large-sized birds exhibit remarkable agility and maneuverability in flight, with their flapping motion encompassing degrees of freedom in flapping, twist, and swing, which enables them to adapt effectively to harsh ecological environments. This study proposes a flapping–twist coupled driving mechanism for large-scale flapping-wing aircraft by mimicking the motion patterns of birds. The mechanism generates simultaneous twist and flapping motions based on the phase difference of double cranks, allowing for the adjustment of twist amplitude through modifications in crank radius and phase difference. The objective of this work is to optimize the lift and thrust of the flapping wing to enhance its flight performance. To achieve this, we first derived the kinematic model of the mechanism and conducted motion simulations. To mitigate the effects of the flapping wing’s flexibility, a rigid flapping wing was designed and manufactured. Through wind tunnel experiments, the flapping wing system was tested. The results demonstrated that, compared to the non-twist condition, there exists an optimal twist amplitude that slightly increases the lift of the flapping wing while significantly enhancing the thrust. It is hoped that this study will provide guidance for the design of multi-degree-of-freedom flapping wing mechanisms. Full article

To meet the growing demand for space launches and overcome the limitations of land-based launches, the scientific research community is committed to developing safer and more flexible offshore rocket launch technologies. Their core carriers—marine platforms—are directly exposed to the dynamic and variable marine environment. The complex coupling effects of wind, waves, and currents impose severe challenges upon these platforms, causing complex phenomena such as severe rocking. These phenomena pose severe threats to and significantly interfere with the stability and normal execution of offshore rocket launch operations. This study employs CFD simulation software to analyze liquid sloshing within a cylindrical tank, both with and without baffles. Following validation of the natural frequency, the analysis focuses on the suppression effect of different baffle positions and configurations on tank sloshing. The numerical simulation results indicate the following: Incorporating baffles alters the natural frequency of liquid sloshing within the tank and effectively suppresses the free surface motion. The suppression of the wave surface motion improves as the baffle is positioned closer to the free surface and as the number of perforations in the baffle increases. However, when the number of perforations exceeds a certain threshold, further increasing it yields negligible improvement in the suppression of the sloshing wave surface motion. Full article

Modeling and simulation of aneurysm formation, growth, and rupture plays an essential role in a wide spectrum of application scenarios, ranging from risk stratification to stability prediction, and from clinical decision-making to treatment innovation. Unfortunately, it remains a non-trivial task due to the difficulties imposed by the complex and under-researched pathophysiological mechanisms behind the different development stages of various aneurysms. In this paper, we present a novel computational method for aneurysm simulation using smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH). Firstly, we consider blood in a vessel as a kind of incompressible fluid and model its flow dynamics using the SPH method; and then, to simulate aneurysm growth and rupture, the relationship between the aneurysm development and the properties of fluid particles is established by solving the motion control equation. In view of the prevalence of aneurysms in bifurcation vessels, we further enhance the capability of the model by introducing a solution for bifurcation aneurysms simulation according to Murray’s law. In addition, a CUDA parallel computing scheme is also designed to speed up the simulation process. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, we conduct extensive experiments with different physical parameters associated with morphological characteristics of an aneurysm. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of proposed method in modeling and simulating aneurysm formation, growth, and rupture. Full article
