Incorporation of lanthanide (Ln) and actinide (An) ions into the human body poses significant chemotoxic and radiotoxic risks, necessitating effective decorporation strategies. This study investigates the displacement of biologically relevant ligands from trivalent ions of europium, Eu(III), and curium, Cm(III), in artificial biofluids by various complexing agents, i.e., ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), ethylene glycol-bis(β-aminoethyl ether)-N,N,N′,N′-tetraacetic acid (EGTA), diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA), and spermine-based hydroxypyridonate chelator 3,4,3-LI(1,2-HOPO) (HOPO). Utilizing a modified unified bioaccessibility method (UBM) to simulate gastrointestinal conditions, we conducted concentration-dependent displacement experiments at both room and body temperatures. Time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy (TRLFS) supported by 2H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and thermodynamic modelling revealed the complexation efficacy of the agents under physiological conditions. Results demonstrate that high affinity, governed by complex stability constants and ligand pKa values, is critical to overcome cation and anion competition and leads to effective decorporation. Additionally, there is evidence that cyclic ligands are inferior to linear ligands for this application. HOPO and DTPA exhibited superior displacement efficacy, particularly in the complete gastrointestinal tract simulation. This study highlights the utility of in vitro workflows for evaluating decorporation agents and emphasizes the need for ligands with optimal binding characteristics for enhanced chelation therapies. Long-Term Mechanical Response of Jinping Ultra-Deep Tunnels Considering Pore Pressure and Engineering Disturbances

As the world’s deepest hydraulic tunnels, the Jinping ultra-deep tunnels provide world-class conditions for research on deep rock mechanics under extreme conditions. This study analyzed the time-dependent behavior of different tunneling sections in the Jinping tunnels using the Nishihara creep model implemented in Abaqus. Validated numerical simulations of representative cross-sections at 1400 m and 2400 m depths in the diversion tunnel reveal that long-term creep deformations (over a 20-year period) substantially exceed instantaneous excavation-induced displacements. The stress concentrations and strain magnitudes exhibit significant depth dependence. The maximum principal stress at a 2400 m depth reaches 1.71 times that at 1400 m, while the vertical strain increases 1.46-fold. Based on this, the long-term mechanical behavior of the surrounding rock during the expansion of the Jinping auxiliary tunnel was further calculated and predicted. It was found that the stress concentration at the top and bottom of the left sidewall increases from 135 MPa to 203 MPa after expansion, identifying these as critical areas requiring focused monitoring and early warnings. The total deformation of the rock mass increases by approximately 5 mm after expansion, with the cumulative deformation reaching 14 mm. Post-expansion deformation converges within 180 days, with creep deformation of 2.5 mm–3.5 mm observed in both sidewalls, accounts for 51.0% of the total deformation during expansion. The surrounding rock reaches overall stability three years after the completion of expansion. These findings establish quantitative relationships between the excavation depth, time-dependent deformation, and stress redistribution and support the stability design, risk management, and infrastructure for ultra-deep tunnels in a stress state at a 2400 m depth. These insights are critical to ensuring the long-term stability of ultra-deep tunnels and operational safety assessments. Full article

RC piers in mountainous coastal or saline areas face the dual threats of rockfall impacts and chloride-induced steel corrosion, but their combined effects on dynamic response and residual bearing capacity remain unquantified. This study aims to investigate these combined effects over a 90-year service time and propose a damage assessment formula. A validated numerical model (relative error ≤14.7%) of corroded RC columns under impact is developed using ABAQUS, based on which the dynamic response and residual bearing capacity of an actual RC pier subjected to rockfall impacts during the service time of 90 years incorporating corrosion initiation (via Life-365 software 2.2) and propagation are analyzed, with the consideration of various impact energies (1–5 t mass, 5–15 m/s velocity). Results show that (1) increasing impact mass/velocity expands damage and increases displacement (e.g., the velocity of increases peak displacement by 33.41 mm in comparison to 5 m/s); (2) a 90-year service time leads to >50% severe surface damage and 47.1% residual capacity loss; and (3) the proposed and validated damage formula assessment formula for the residual bearing capacity enables lifecycle maintenance guidance. This work provides a validated framework for assessing combined corrosion-rockfall effects, aiding design and maintenance of structures. Full article

As a novel prefabricated structural element, the pre-tensioned, prestressed concrete T-beam with polygonal tendons layout demonstrates advantages including reduced prestress loss, streamlined construction procedures, and stable manufacturing quality, showing promising applications in medium-span bridge engineering. This paper conducted a full-scale experiment and numerical simulation research on a 30 m pre-tensioned, prestressed concrete T-beam with polygonal tendons practically used in engineering. The full-scale experiment applied symmetrical four-point bending to create a pure bending region and used embedded strain gauges, surface sensors, and optical 3D motion capture systems to monitor the beam’s internal strain, surface strain distribution, and three-dimensional displacement patterns during loading. The experiment observed that the test beam underwent elastic, crack development, and failure phases. The design’s service-load bending moment induced a deflection of 18.67 mm (below the 47.13 mm limit). Visible cracking initiated under a bending moment of 7916.85 kN·m, which exceeded the theoretical cracking moment of 5928.81 kN·m calculated from the design parameters. Upon yielding of the bottom steel reinforcement, the maximum of the crack width reached 1.00 mm, the deflection in mid-span measured 148.61 mm, and the residual deflection after unloading was 10.68 mm. These results confirmed that the beam satisfied design code requirements for serviceability stiffness and crack control, exhibiting favorable elastic recovery characteristics. Numerical simulations using ABAQUS further verified the structural performance of the T-beam. The finite element model accurately captured the beam’s mechanical response and verified its satisfactory ductility, highlighting the applicability of this beam type in bridge engineering. The suitability of 347H stainless steel (SS347H) for chloride salt environments is critical in selecting materials for next-generation concentrated solar power (CSP) systems. This study investigated the corrosion behavior of SS347H in a ton-scale purification system with continuously flowing chloride salt under three conditions: exposure to NaCl-KCl-MgCl2 molten salt vapor, immersion in molten salt, and at the molten salt surface interface. Results revealed that corrosion was most severe in the molten salt vapor, where HCl steam facilitated Cl reactions with Fe and Cr in the metal, causing dissolution and forming deep corrosion pits. At the interface, liquid Mg triggered displacement reactions with Fe2+/Cr2+ ions in the salt, depositing Fe and Cr onto the surface, which reduced corrosion intensity. Within the molten salt, Mg’s purification effect minimized impurity-induced corrosion, resulting in the least damage. In all cases, the primary corrosion mechanism involves the dissolution of Fe and Cr, with the formation of minor MgO. These insights provide valuable guidance for applying 347H stainless steel in chloride salt environments. Full article

Expansive soils, characterized by the presence of surface and subsurface cracks, over-consolidation, and swell-shrink properties, present significant challenges to slope stability in geotechnical engineering. Despite extensive research, preventing geohazards associated with expansive soils remains unresolved. This study investigates shallow sliding failures in slopes of highly expansive soils induced by rainfall, using model tests to explore deformation and mechanical behavior under cyclic wetting and drying conditions, focusing on the interaction between soil properties and environmental factors. Model tests were conducted in a wedge-shaped box filled with Nanyang expansive clay from Henan, China, which is classified as high-plasticity clay (CH) according to the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS). The soil was compacted in four layers to maintain a 1:2 slope ratio (i.e., 1 vertical to 2 horizontal), which reflects typical expansive soil slope configurations observed in the field. Monitoring devices, including moisture sensors, pressure transducers, and displacement sensors, recorded changes in soil moisture, stress, and deformation. A static treatment phase allowed natural crack development to simulate real-world conditions. Key findings revealed that shear failure propagated along pre-existing cracks and weak structural discontinuities, supporting the progressive failure theory in shallow sliding. Cracks significantly influenced water infiltration, creating localized stress concentrations and deformation. Atmospheric conditions and wet-dry cycles were crucial, as increased moisture content reduced soil suction and weakened the slope’s strength. These results enhance understanding of expansive soil slope failure mechanisms and provide a theoretical foundation for developing improved stabilization techniques. Full article

Earth fill dams are susceptible to internal erosion and instability when founded over cavity-prone formations such as gypsum or karstic limestone. Subsurface voids can significantly compromise dam performance, particularly under seismic loading, by altering seepage paths, raising pore pressures, and inducing structural deformation. This study examines the influence of cavity presence, location, shape, and size on the behavior of zoned earth dams. A 1:25 scale physical model was tested on a uniaxial shake table under varying seismic intensities, and seepage behavior was observed under steady-state conditions. Numerical simulations using SEEP/W and QUAKE/W in GeoStudio complemented the experimental work. Results revealed that upstream and double-cavity configurations caused the greatest deformation, including crest displacements of up to 0.030 m and upstream subsidence of ~7 cm under 0.47 g shaking. Pore pressures increased markedly near cavities, with peaks exceeding 2.7 kPa. Irregularly shaped and larger cavities further amplified these effects and led to dynamic factors of safety falling below 0.6. In contrast, downstream cavities produced minimal impact. The excellent agreement between experimental and numerical results validates the modeling approach. Overall, the findings highlight that cavity geometry and location are critical determinants of dam safety under both static and seismic conditions. Full article

Enhanced oil recovery (EOR) via CO2 flooding is a promising strategy for improving hydrocarbon recovery and carbon sequestration, yet the influence of pH on solid–liquid interfacial interactions in quartz-dominated reservoirs remains poorly understood. This study employs molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to investigate the pH-dependent adsorption behavior of crude oil components on quartz surfaces and its impact on CO2 displacement mechanisms. Three quartz surface models with varying ionization degrees (0%, 9%, 18%, corresponding to pH 2–4, 5–7, and 7–9) were constructed to simulate different pH environments. The MD results reveal that aromatic hydrocarbons exhibit significantly stronger adsorption on quartz surfaces at high pH, with their maximum adsorption peak increasing from 398 kg/m3 (pH 2–4) to 778 kg/m3 (pH 7–9), while their alkane adsorption peaks decrease from 764 kg/m3 to 460 kg/m3. This pH-dependent behavior is attributed to enhanced cation–π interactions that are facilitated by Na+ ion aggregation on negatively charged quartz surfaces at high pH, which form stable tetrahedral configurations with aromatic molecules and surface oxygen ions. During CO2 displacement, an adsorption–stripping–displacement mechanism was observed: CO2 first forms an adsorption layer on the quartz surface, then penetrates the oil phase to induce the detachment of crude oil components, which are subsequently displaced by pressure. Although high pH enhances the Na+-mediated weakening of oil-surface interactions, which leads to a 37% higher diffusion coefficient (8.5 × 10−5 cm2/s vs. 6.2 × 10−5 cm2/s at low pH), the tighter packing of aromatic molecules at high pH slows down the displacement rate. This study provides molecular-level insights into pH-regulated adsorption and CO2 displacement processes, highlighting the critical role of the surface charge and cation–π interactions in optimizing CO2-EOR strategies for quartz-rich reservoirs. Steel lazy wave risers (SLWRs) are critical in offshore hydrocarbon transport for linking subsea wells to floating production facilities in deep-water environments. The incorporation of buoyancy modules reduces curvature-induced stress concentrations in the touchdown zone (TDZ); however, extended operational exposure under cyclic environmental and operational loads results in repeated seabed contact. This repeated interaction modifies the seabed soil over time, gradually forming a trench and altering the riser configuration, which significantly impacts stress patterns and contributes to fatigue degradation. Accurately reconstructing the riser’s evolving profile in the TDZ is essential for reliable fatigue life estimation and structural integrity evaluation. This study proposes a simulation-based framework for the autonomous tracking of SLWRs using a fin-actuated autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) equipped with a monocular camera and multibeam echosounder. By fusing visual and acoustic data, the system continuously estimates the AUV’s relative position concerning the riser. A dedicated image processing pipeline, comprising bilateral filtering, edge detection, Hough transform, and K-means clustering, facilitates the extraction of the riser’s centerline and measures its displacement from nearby objects and seabed variations. The framework was developed and validated in the underwater unmanned vehicle (UUV) Simulator, a high-fidelity underwater robotics and pipeline inspection environment. Simulated scenarios included the riser’s dynamic lateral and vertical oscillations, in which the system demonstrated robust performance in capturing complex three-dimensional trajectories. The resulting riser profiles can be integrated into numerical models incorporating riser–soil interaction and non-linear hysteretic behavior, ultimately enhancing fatigue prediction accuracy and informing long-term infrastructure maintenance strategies. This study investigates the coupling mechanism between a parabolic notch and dislocations in one-dimensional (1D) hexagonal piezoelectric quasicrystals (PQCs) based on the theory of complex variable functions. By applying perturbation techniques and the Cauchy integral, analytical solutions for complex potentials are derived, yielding closed-form expressions for the phonon–phason stress field and electric displacement field. Numerical examples reveal several key findings: significant stress concentration occurs at the notch root, accompanied by suppression of electric displacement; interference patterns between dislocation cores and notch-induced stress singularities are identified; the J-integral quantifies distance-dependent forces, size effects, and angular force distributions reflecting notch symmetry; and the energy-driven dislocation slip toward free surfaces leads to the formation of dislocation-free zones. These results provide new insights into electromechanical fracture mechanisms in quasicrystals. Full article

This paper presents some of the most significant findings in the design of a hydraulic servomechanism for flight controls, which were primarily achieved by the first author during his activity in an aviation institute. These results are grouped into four main topics. The first one outlines a classical theory, from the 1950s–1970s, of the analysis of nonlinear automatic systems and namely the issue of absolute stability. The uninformed public may be misled by the adjective “absolute”. This is not a “maximalist” solution of stability but rather highlights in the system of equations a nonlinear function that describes, for the case of hydraulic servomechanisms, the flow-control dependence in the distributor spool. This function is odd, and it is therefore located in quadrants 1 and 3. The decision regarding stability is made within the so-called Lurie problem and is materialized by a matrix inequality, called the Lefschetz condition, which must be satisfied by the parameters of the electrohydraulic servomechanism and also by the components of the control feedback vector. Another approach starts from a classical theorem of V. M. Popov, extended in a stochastic framework by T. Morozan and I. Ursu, which ends with the description of the local and global spool valve flow-control characteristics that ensure stability in the large with respect to bounded perturbations for the mechano-hydraulic servomechanism. We add that a conjecture regarding the more pronounced flexibility of mathematical models in relation to mathematical instruments (theories) was used. Furthermore, the second topic concerns, the importance of the impedance characteristic of the mechano-hydraulic servomechanism in preventing flutter of the flight controls is emphasized. Impedance, also called dynamic stiffness, is defined as the ratio, in a dynamic regime, between the output exerted force (at the actuator rod of the servomechanism) and the displacement induced by this force under the assumption of a blocked input. It is demonstrated in the paper that there are two forms of the impedance function: one that favors the appearance of flutter and another that allows for flutter damping. It is interesting to note that these theoretical considerations were established in the institute’s reports some time before their introduction in the Aviation Regulation AvP.970. However, it was precisely the absence of the impedance criterion in the regulation at the appropriate time that ultimately led, by chance or not, to a disaster: the crash of a prototype due to tailplane flutter. A third topic shows how an important problem in the theory of automatic systems of the 1970s–1980s, namely the robust synthesis of the servomechanism, is formulated, applied and solved in the case of an electrohydraulic servomechanism. In general, the solution of a robust servomechanism problem consists of two distinct components: a servo-compensator, in fact an internal model of the exogenous dynamics, and a stabilizing compensator. These components are adapted in the case of an electrohydraulic servomechanism. In addition to the classical case mentioned above, a synthesis problem of an anti-windup (anti-saturation) compensator is formulated and solved. The fourth topic, and the last one presented in detail, is the synthesis of a fuzzy supervised neurocontrol (FSNC) for the position tracking of an electrohydraulic servomechanism, with experimental validation, in the laboratory, of this control law. The neurocontrol module is designed using a single-layered perceptron architecture. Neurocontrol is in principle optimal, but it is not free from saturation. To this end, in order to counteract saturation, a Mamdani-type fuzzy logic was developed, which takes control when neurocontrol has saturated. It returns to neurocontrol when it returns to normal, respectively, when saturation is eliminated. What distinguishes this FSNC law is its simplicity and efficiency and especially the fact that against quite a few opponents in the field, it still works very well on quite complicated physical systems. Finally, a brief section reviews some recent works by the authors, in which current approaches to hydraulic servomechanisms are presented: the backstepping control synthesis technique, input delay treated with Lyapunov–Krasovskii functionals, and critical stability treated with Lyapunov–Malkin theory. The increasing congestion of low Earth orbit (LEO) has raised the need for efficient collision avoidance strategies, especially for CubeSats without propulsion systems. This study proposes a methodology for evaluating passive collision avoidance maneuvers using aerodynamic control via a satellite’s Attitude Determination and Control System (ADCS). By adjusting orientation, the satellite modifies its exposed surface area, altering atmospheric drag and lift forces to shift its orbit. This new approach integrates atmospheric modeling (NRLMSISE-00), aerodynamic coefficient estimation using the ADBSat panel method, and orbital simulations in Systems Tool Kit (STK). The LUME-1 CubeSat mission is used as a reference case, with simulations at three altitudes (500, 460, and 420 km). Results show that attitude-induced drag modulation can generate significant orbital displacements—measured by Horizontal and Vertical Distance Differences (HDD and VDD)—sufficient to reduce collision risk. Compared to constant-drag models, the panel method offers more accurate, orientation-dependent predictions. While lift forces are minor, their inclusion enhances modeling fidelity. This methodology supports the development of low-resource, autonomous collision avoidance systems for future CubeSat missions, particularly in remote sensing applications where orbital precision is essential. The Mw7.0 earthquake that occurred on 23 January 2024, in Wushi County, Xinjiang, China, was centered on the Maidan fault, located at the rear edge of the Kalpin reverse-thrust system in the southwestern Tianshan Mountains, at a depth of 13 km. This event caused significant surface deformation and triggered a series of secondary geologic hazards. In this study, data from two satellites, Sentinel-1A and LuTan-1, were combined to obtain the coseismic deformation field of the earthquake. The two-step inversion method was applied to determine the geometrical parameters and slip characteristics of the mainshock fault. The results indicate that the seismicity is primarily driven by reverse faulting, with a contribution from sinistral strike–slip faulting, and the maximum dip–slip displacement is 4.2 m. Additionally, an aftershock of magnitude 5.7 occurring on January 30 was identified in the LT-1 data. This aftershock was controlled by a reverse fault dipping opposite to the mainshock fault, and its maximum slip is 0.65 m. Analysis of the Coulomb stress triggering effect suggests that the Wushi earthquake may have induced the aftershock. Full article

Deployable thin-film antennas deliver large aperture gains and high stowage efficiency for spaceborne phased arrays but suffer wrinkling-induced planarity loss and radiation distortion. To bridge the lack of electromechanical coupling models for tensioned thin-film patch antennas, we present a unified framework combining structural deformation and electromagnetic simulation. We derive a coupling model capturing the increased bending stiffness of stepped-thickness membranes, formulate a wrinkling analysis algorithm to compute tension-induced displacements, and fit representative unit-cell deformations to a dual-domain displacement model. Parametric studies across stiffness ratios confirm the framework’s ability to predict shifts in pattern, gain, and impedance due to wrinkling. This tool supports the optimized design of wrinkle-resistant thin-film phased arrays for reliable, high-performance space communications. Full article

The microstructure evolution and hardness variations of as-fabricated and recrystallized 12Cr oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) steel after dual-ion (6.4 MeV Fe3+ and energy-degraded 1 MeV He+) irradiation at 973 K up to 10.6 displacements per atom (dpa) at peak damage and 8900 appm He are investigated. Results show that the oxide particles slightly shrink in the as-fabricated specimen, while they are stable in the recrystallized specimen. Furthermore, larger helium bubbles are trapped at the grain boundaries in the as-fabricated specimen, and the size of helium bubbles in the grains is almost the same for both as-fabricated and recrystallized specimens, indicating that reduction of grain boundaries would reduce the potential nucleation sites and suppress the helium segregation. Moreover, no obvious hardening occurs in the as-fabricated specimen, whereas the hardness increases a little in the recrystallized specimen. Based on the barrier model, the barrier strength factor of helium bubbles is calculated. The value is 0.077, which is much smaller and suggests that helium bubbles seem not to significantly induce irradiation hardening. Full article
