Virtual reality (VR) applications are often designed as episodic experiences, with limited support for persistence, longitudinal revisitation, and structured integration of interaction data across sessions. This paper presents a persistent multi-user VR garden architecture that combines snapshot-based state restoration, structured event, movement, and transcript records, an asymmetric owner–visitor workflow, cloud-mediated speech transcription, and deferred AI-supported synthesis. The architecture separates the current spatial configuration of the environment from the interaction traces through which it evolves, supporting repeated access, state restoration, historical consultation, and post-hoc processing. A controlled technical validation using synthetic or researcher-generated inputs was conducted through Unity Editor/backend tests and on Meta Quest 3 hardware. Persistence was evaluated at 20, 100, and 250 objects in the Editor and at 1, 50, and 100 objects on Quest, with two Quest replicas per load. Application-level visitor restrictions were verified across nine prohibited write operations. A frozen production speech-to-text corpus completed 40/40 requests with a micro-averaged word error rate of 9.50% and a median end-to-end latency of 1.619 s. The deferred AI pipeline was additionally verified as a functioning technical integration, while limitations in semantic-detail preservation were observed. The results support the implementation-level feasibility of the proposed persistent and traceable VR architecture. The present evaluation does not establish backend-level authorization guarantees, general AI or NPC-grounding performance, user outcomes, or clinical effectiveness. Full article

Historic urban landscapes are at continuous risk of loss due to urban modernization and the demolition of built heritage. Scan-based documentation methods such as laser scanning and photogrammetry become inapplicable, leaving demolished sites undocumented and unrecoverable through existing digital heritage workflows. This study develops a documentary-based Urban Digital Twin (UDT) framework for reconstructing demolished historic urban landscapes through the integration of historical documentation, geospatial analysis, and parametric modeling within the Historic Urban Landscape (HUL) approach. As a feasibility study, the framework reconstructs Chahar-Bagh Bala Street in Isfahan, Iran, a four-century-old promenade among the oldest urban streets in the Middle East, whose royal garden entrances, towers, water features, and promenade have been almost entirely replaced by industrial and modern structures. The methodology applies a nine-step workflow, integrating georeferencing, viewpoint reconstruction, cross-source validation, and HBIM parametric modeling, using historical maps, travel account engravings, archival photographs, and measured plans. The reconstruction confirms the historical existence and spatial locations, established through convergent visual evidence, of two lost royal garden entrances. The study further quantifies long-term historic green infrastructure loss, finding that approximately 70% of the original garden cover has been replaced. This replicable framework supports evidence-based heritage governance and sustainable urban regeneration, including the reintegration of historic green infrastructure into contemporary urban planning, particularly for rapidly transforming cities of the Global South. Historic gardens are among the cultural heritage assets most vulnerable to climate change because their significance depends on the continuous interaction between living ecological systems, designed landscapes and cultural values. Although international policies increasingly advocate the integration of climate adaptation into heritage management, operational methodologies capable of systematically incorporating climate risk into the conservation planning of historic gardens remain limited. This paper develops the Historic Garden Climate Risk Management Framework (HG-CRMF), a multi-scale, heritage-centered methodological framework designed to integrate climate risk management within existing Conservation Management Plans (CMPs). The framework was developed through the synthesis of international heritage conservation principles, climate adaptation policies, environmental risk assessment methodologies and adaptive governance approaches. Its principal innovation lies in combining strategic conservation planning at the scale of the historic garden with operational implementation through Garden Conservation Units (GCUs), spatially coherent heritage entities that enable site-specific assessment of heritage values, climate hazards, exposure, vulnerability, adaptation measures and monitoring indicators. The HG-CRMF provides a structured workflow linking heritage significance, climate risk assessment, adaptation planning, monitoring and adaptive governance within a single decision-support methodology. Rather than constituting a stand-alone adaptation strategy, the framework strengthens existing conservation planning by embedding climate-informed decision-making into routine management processes. Plant-associated microbiomes play critical roles in regulating plant growth, nutrient acquisition, and stress adaptation. However, whether geographically distinct plant provenances retain heritable signatures that influence microbiome assembly under uniform environmental conditions remains poorly understood. In this study, 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing was employed to characterize root-associated bacterial communities of clonally propagated Tripterygium wilfordii derived from nine provenances and cultivated under identical soil conditions, with additional sampling from native populations. Host provenance significantly affected community composition, explaining 27.0% and 32.6% of the variation in rhizosphere and endophytic communities, respectively. Rhizosphere bacterial diversity differed significantly among provenances, whereas endophytic communities showed stronger differentiation in community structure and deterministic host selection. Although native plants exhibited lower bacterial diversity, they recruited more potential plant growth-promoting bacteria compared with transplanted plants. Environmental factors, particularly historical mean annual precipitation and longitude of native habitats, significantly influenced community diversity and structure. Distance–decay patterns demonstrated that root-associated bacterial communities retained climatic imprints from their native provenances despite cultivation under common-garden conditions. This study provides evidence that plant provenance can leave persistent microbial signatures and highlights the importance of integrating host genetic background and microbiome characteristics to understand ecological adaptation and improve germplasm utilization in medicinal plants. We compare six purposively selected term pairs using an English-language web corpus composed mainly of encyclopedic sources: engawa/veranda, tsuboniwa/impluvium, shōji/fusuma, tokonoma/chigaidana, ma/mu, and wabi/sabi. The pairs form three groups: cross-cultural comparisons, related Japanese architectural elements, and conceptual or aesthetic pairings. The study applies an audited corpus-based Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) analysis. Each pair is tested across predefined seed-based fields under FULL corpus conditions and CLEAN conditions that remove glossary-like and explicitly definitional sentences. In the tested corpus, the pairs do not behave as simple equivalents or oppositions. In cross-cultural comparisons, engawa is more strongly associated with indoor–outdoor boundary vocabulary, while narrowly specified boundary and transitional probes also favor engawa; veranda is more strongly linked to circulation and sheltered outdoor use. Tsuboniwa leans toward meanings of miniature gardens, whereas impluvium is strongly associated with water, basins, and Roman domestic systems. Within Japanese architectural vocabulary, fusuma dominates partition-related fields, whereas tokonoma and chigaidana remain mostly weak or non-separating. Among abstract terms, ma and mu show an asymmetric bidirectional pattern, with correction-supported separation more consistent for ma-directed than for mu-directed fields. Wabi and sabi show high contextual similarity in the selected English-language corpus, with correction-supported separation only for impermanence and melancholy. The field comparisons identify where the paired terms differ, where no difference was detected, and where one term was more strongly associated with several fields. The findings concern contextual usage in this corpus rather than definitive architectural, historical, or philosophical meanings of the terms. Full article

Urban green areas are essential for human well-being, biodiversity, and environmental sustainability. Although railway renewal projects are celebrated today, Italy pioneered the Flowery Stations Contest (FSC) in the early twentieth century. This study provides the first comprehensive synthesis of the FSC experience (1911–1915), investigating its historical evolution, organizational features, and botanical aspects. A systematic review of 81 historical documents was conducted to reconstruct the contest’s framework. To evaluate long-term impact, we surveyed 90 historically top-ranked stations via satellite imagery and investigated the case study of Ripafratta station (a fraction of San Giuliano Terme, Pisa, Tuscany). Results show the FSC involved up to 291 stations, prioritizing esthetic decorum and hygiene against locomotive soot. Although organizers recommended 64% non-native genera, stationmasters favoured local biodiversity, increasing effectively employed native genera to 43%. Nowadays, 54% of surveyed stations retain their gardens, mainly located in rural areas, yet 82% of these are neglected following the decline of the resident stationmaster’s role. We conclude that the FSC established a significant physical and cultural legacy. Recovering its model of decentralized stewardship could offer a strategic framework for modern urban regeneration, transforming stations into multifunctional hubs while preserving regional floristic identity, in alignment with contemporary European sustainability models. This manuscript presents the results of a health assessment of a tree stand at the historic manor park in Rzeczyca (Łódź Voivodeship, Poland), carried out as part of its revitalization process. The study aimed to preserve the relics of the historic landed estate garden and adapt the park to contemporary public functions through the development of a tree management plan based on specialized arboricultural diagnostics. A dendrological inventory covered 370 trees within an area of approximately 3 ha, documenting their spatial distribution, species composition, morphology, and health condition. The dominant species were Tilia cordata (21.9%), Fraxinus excelsior (19.7%), and Prunus spinosa (9.4%). Advanced technical examinations were performed on 87 selected trees using sonic tomography with the ArborSonic 3D device and biomechanical assessment. These methods enabled the evaluation of internal wood degradation and the structural stability of mature trees, supporting decisions regarding their preservation. The findings emphasize the importance of cooperation between landscape architects and qualified arborists in the revitalization of historic parks with mature tree stands. The study also highlights the need for standardized diagnostic procedures and regular monitoring to improve public safety, support conservation efforts, and reduce unnecessary tree removal in response to increasing climate-related risks. Although heritage reconstruction can effectively restore physical form, the regeneration of living cultural experience remains theoretically underexplored in heritage tourism scholarship. This study introduces the concept of post-reconstruction experiential disjunction (PRED)—the structural misalignment among reconstructed material form, historically embedded cultural scripts, and the embodied practices of contemporary visitors—and develops the Material–Script–Practice (MSP) framework around it. Taking Yuyuan Garden (愚园) in Nanjing as an empirical case, a mixed-methods design combines online discourse analysis, field observation, and a questionnaire survey (N = 300). Findings reveal that Cultural Script most strongly predicts disjunction mitigation—a four-item scale capturing visitors’ holistic sense of experiential connectivity (α = 0.832), followed by Material Form; Embodied Practice contributes comparatively little. Photographers show significantly lower mitigation levels than other groups, owing to structural conflicts between professional visual practice and the cultural logic of classical garden space. The MSP framework reveals a weighted hierarchy among its three dimensions: a finding that extends and empirically specifies the theoretical insights of Lefebvre’s spatial triad and Edensor’s heritage performance theory, neither of which typically foregrounds differential explanatory weight among their constituent elements. When cultural scripts offer accessible meaning pathways for visitors of diverse backgrounds, heritage spaces can move beyond formal reconstruction toward experiential reconstitution, sustaining the conditions for long-term heritage preservation. The heritagisation of cultural landscapes is often understood as a state-led administrative process. At the same time, the discursive origins and adaptive mechanisms that precede formal designation remain underexplored, especially in relation to cultural sustainability. This study examines the pre-heritagisation of Suzhou’s classical gardens during China’s modern transformation by analysing periodical discourse published between 1870 and 1948. Using a mixed-methods approach that combines quantitative content analysis and Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), it investigates 699 historical texts from the Index to Chinese Newspapers & Periodicals database. The findings reveal a dual discursive process. On the one hand, reports portrayed the gardens as accessible, multifunctional civic spaces through narratives of public use. On the other hand, literati discourse reinforced their classical value through historical memory and aesthetic preservation. Together, these tendencies show how the gardens were materially refunctioned and symbolically re-anchored under modern conditions. Rather than directly producing later heritage designation, this process helped create the socio-cultural conditions through which the gardens acquired broader public intelligibility, cultural legitimacy, and heritage-like meanings before formal institutional recognition. This essay focuses on a series of radical, never-built “garden” designs from 1969 by the artist-turned-landscape-architect Patricia Johanson (1940–2024), which proposed sites in and around New York City that would confront the public with complex human–ecological interrelationships of the day, often posing thorny questions about them. In all, she composed 150 drawings and 7 related essays, sparked by a misguided commission from House & Garden magazine, which envisioned everything from skyscrapers retrofitted with plant trellises to filter water; to the conversion of a highway interchange into a clover field for honey production; fissures sliced into asphalt to allow the release and observation of subterranean steam; and a river dyed to highlight, rather than conceal, ongoing industrial pollution. I revisit this ambitious, multidisciplinary body of work not only in relation to its original context, when a modern ecology movement was gaining momentum, American cities were becoming ever more privatized, and a number of fellow artists began making large-scale outdoor artworks that would come to dominate art historical accounts of land and environmental art, but also, through the lens of its continued, and arguably heightened, relevance in our own moment of spiraling climate breakdown, corporate geo-engineering schemes, and further enclosures of various commons, as well as an ever-growing field of eco-art history, to which this special journal issue is a testament. The Beiyue Temple in Quyang County, Hebei Province, served as the host temple for worshipping the Northern Peak Deity (Beiyue shen) from its establishment during the reign of Emperor Xuanwu (483–515) of Northern Wei until the reign of Emperor Shunzhi (1638–1661) of the Qing dynasty. The temple currently houses over 200 inscribed stone steles that predate the founding of the Republic of China in 1912. This study addresses how the sacrificial space inside the Beiyue Temple evolved and transformed. By examining historical and archaeological evidence—including archival documents, epigraphic texts, diagrams, and architectural remnants—and focusing on the ‘front altar, rear garden’, the ‘hall for presenting sacrificial offerings of the common people’, and the ‘overhanging eave’, it demonstrates that the temple’s ritual space developed a dual character shaped by both official and folk practices. This duality reflects the interaction between official and folk practices against the backdrop of ‘the downward diffusion of ritual norms’ (lizhi xiayi) from the Tang and Song dynasties onwards. The findings challenge the conventional view that there was no specific space for folk ritual worship inside state-sanctioned temples during the Northern Song dynasty. It also provides vital evidence for the historical development of the sacrificial hall (xiandian) and the layout of pavilion-style stages (wuting) immediately in front of the main hall in temples built during the Song and Jin dynasties. This study examines the campus-planning projects (1920–1937) of Kwan, Chu & Yang, Architects & Engineers (KCY), a major Chinese firm, against the backdrop of Sino-American cross-cultural knowledge transfer. It argues that their work exhibited a distinct compositional tendency derived from the partners’ U.S. Beaux-Arts education and contemporary American planning theory. Through historical analysis and case studies of four university projects, this research examines how composition-based spatial unity engaged with specific Chinese site conditions. The results indicate that early projects negotiated irregular boundaries, while later ones grappled with complex topography, such as historic gardens and hills. Although often unrealized, these grand schemes embodied a scientific planning methodology and served as aspirational blueprints. This study concludes that compositional practice was a significant part of China’s architectural modernization, representing both a professional design approach and a cultural response to the quest for modernity and national identity. Qinghui Garden, one of the Four Famous Lingnan Gardens, is used as a case study. A total of 54 visitors participated in an on-site field experiment, with data collected through pre- and post-experience questionnaires, behavioral tracking, and supplementary semi-structured interviews. Through a comparative experiment with three groups of visitors—free exploration, traditional guided tours, and real-space gamified interactive experiences—it was found that the gamified interactive method demonstrated superior clarity and reliability in its technology. Visitor cognitive performance and subjective satisfaction increased by approximately 62.5%, and the gamified interaction effectively guided the spatial flow and interaction behaviors with specific spaces. These findings provide new insights into the design of real-space gamified interactive experiences in historical spaces, contributing significantly to the preservation and cognition of cultural heritage. As vital repositories of Beijing’s cultural heritage, Qing Dynasty Qinwang (Prince of the First Rank) mansions offer profound insights into the era’s architectural evolution. Despite its significance, systematic architectural analysis of Prince Jingjin’s Mansion is lacking, with existing research primarily focusing on historical events. To address this gap, the present study focuses on Prince Jingjin’s Mansion as its research subject, utilizing historical document analysis, historical map comparison, field investigation, and space syntax analysis. This study investigates the succession of ownership, historical development, and architectural regulations, and outlines the complete construction process shaped by the evolution of early Qing princely mansion regulations as well as the functional transformation during the late Qing period. Furthermore, the architectural features of the mansion are explored from five perspectives: site selection, functionality, spatial layout, individual buildings, and gardens. The objective of this study is to elucidate the unique characteristics and significance of Prince Jingjin’s Mansion, thereby offering theoretical support for the development of Beijing as a renowned historical and cultural city and for the preservation and adaptive reuse of architectural heritage structures. Social Value Assessment of Ecosystem Services in Urban Cultural Landscapes from the Perspective of Visitors

The cultural services of urban cultural landscape ecosystems are easily perceived by visitors, and their quantitative assessment and exploration of influencing factors can provide a scientific basis for the optimization of urban cultural landscapes. Existing studies rarely reveal the spatial distribution of the social values of urban cultural landscape ecosystem cultural services and the influencing factors of this spatial distribution from the visitors’ perspective. To reveal the spatial distribution pattern of the social values of urban cultural landscape ecosystem cultural services from the visitors’ perspective, explore its influencing factors, and verify the applicability of the SolVES model in urban cultural landscapes, this study obtained the overall perception and preferences of visitors towards Cangzhou Garden Expo Park through a questionnaire survey. Combining the questionnaire survey data with geographical data, the SolVES 3.0 model was employed to conduct quantitative assessments and spatial distribution analyses of six social values of the ecosystem: esthetic, biodiversity, historical, recreation, learning, and life-sustaining values. The following conclusions were drawn: (1) The maximum value index of recreation value and esthetic value were highest, and showed significant spatial concentrated characteristics, with hotspots concentrated at the northeast side of the park. (2) Biodiversity value and historical value were prominent near areas rich in plant resources and industrial heritage sites. (3) The distance to roads and slope significantly influenced the assessment of social values; social values showed a significant negative correlation with distance to roads. (4) The Garden Expo Park had strong advantages in ecological restoration and social value supply, but there were still problems such as inconvenient transportation and uneven value distribution. Based on the above results, this study proposed suggestions for enhancing the social values of the ecosystem services in Cangzhou Garden Expo Park, and further provided targeted optimization suggestions for the construction and management of urban cultural landscapes. The SolVES model showed good performance in assessing the social values of the ecosystem services of an urban cultural landscape, with high reliability and promising application prospects.
