GTD 111 has been employed in first-stage blades in different gas turbines. The study of microstructural evolution is essential for the lifetime assessment and development of turbine blades. The microstructural stability of a 130 MW gas turbine first-stage blade at 800 °C was studied. The microstructure’s evolution was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and thermodynamic calculation. As thermal exposure time increases, the shape of γ′ precipitates changes from square to spherical. During thermal exposure, MC particles formed and coarsened along the grain boundaries, and primary MC carbide decomposed into the η phase and M23C6. The stability of MC carbide at the grain boundaries was lower than that within the grains. MC carbide precipitated at the grain boundaries tends to grow along the boundaries and eventually forms elongated carbide. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) images indicate that the orientation of the γ′ precipitate changes during the coarsening process. The GTD 111 alloy can be deformed through dislocation shearing at 800 °C. The hardness value initially increases, then decreases with further exposure, which is related to the reduced precipitation strengthening by γ′ precipitates and the reduction in the hardness of the γ matrix. The development of power engineering requires the introduction of new materials and technologies to improve the quality and durability of products. One promising direction is the creation of heat-protective coatings for the protection of working surfaces of turbine blades of gas turbine engines operating at temperatures up to 1000–1200 °C. Intermetallic coatings based on iron aluminides (Fe3Al, FeAl) have high resistance to oxidation due to the formation of an oxide layer: Al2O3. However, their application is limited by brittleness due to the so-called third element effect, which can be reduced through alloying with chromium. In this study the processes of formation of Fe–Al–Cr intermetallic coatings produced by air plasma spraying and the mechanisms affecting their stability at high temperatures were investigated. Experimental studies included the analysis of the microhardness, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance of coatings, as well as their phase composition and microstructure. The results showed that the optimization of sputtering parameters, especially in the FrCrAl (30_33) mode, promotes the formation of a coating with improved tribological and anticorrosion characteristics, which is associated with its dense and uniform structure. These data have an important practical significance for the creation of wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant coatings applicable in power engineering. Full article

To improve the convective heat transfer in internal cooling channels of heavy-duty gas turbine blades, this study experimentally and numerically investigates the thermal performance of rectangular channels with hybrid pin-fins and micro V-ribs turbulators. The transient thermochromic liquid crystal (TLC) technique and ANSYS 2019 R3 (ICEM CFD 2019 R3, Fluent 2019 R3, CFD-Post 2019 R3) were employed under Reynolds numbers ranging from 10,000 to 50,000, with the numerical model rigorously validated against experimental data (the maximum RMSE is 2.5%). It is found that hybrid pin-fins and continuous V-ribs configuration exhibits the maximum heat transfer enhancement of 27.6%, with an average friction factor increase of 13.3% and 21.9% improvement in thermal performance factor (TPF) compared to the baseline pin-fin channel. In addition, compared to the baseline pin-fin channel, hybrid pin-fins and broken V-ribs configuration exhibits average heat transfer enhancement (Nu/Nu0) of 24.4%, an average friction factor increase of 7.2% and 22.5% improvement across the investigated Reynolds number range (10,000~50,000) based on computational results. The synergistic effects of hybrid pin-fin and micro V-rib structures demonstrate superior coolant flow control, offering a promising solution for next-generation turbine blade cooling designs. This work provides actionable insights for high-efficiency gas turbine thermal management. Full article

Film cooling, a vital method for controlling surface temperatures in components subjected to intense heat, strives to enhance efficiency through innovative technological advancements. Over the last several decades, considerable advancements have been made in film cooling technologies for applications such as liquid rocket engines, combustion chambers, nozzle sections, gas turbine components, and hypersonic vehicles, all of which operate under extreme temperatures. This review presents an in-depth investigation of film cooling, its applications, and its key mechanisms and performance characteristics. The review also explores design optimization for combustion chamber components and examines the role of gaseous film cooling in nozzle systems, supported by experimental and numerical validation. Gas turbine cooling relies on integrated methods, including internal and external cooling, material selection, and coolant treatment to prevent overheating. Notably, the cross-flow jet in blade cooling improves heat transfer and reduces thermal fatigue. Film cooling is an indispensable technique for addressing the challenges of high-speed and hypersonic flight, aided by cutting-edge injection methods and advanced transpiration coolants. Special attention is given to factors influencing film cooling performance, as well as state-of-the-art developments in the field. The challenges related to film cooling are reviewed and presented, along with the difficulties in resolving them. Suggestions for addressing these problems in future research are also provided. Study on the Impact of Cooling Air Parameter Changes on the Thermal Fatigue Life of Film Cooling Turbine Blades

Film cooling has been increasingly applied in turbine blade cooling design due to its excellent cooling performance. Although film-cooled blades demonstrate superior cooling effectiveness, the perforation design on blade surfaces compromises structural integrity, making fatigue failure prone to occur at cooling holes. Previous studies by domestic and international scholars have extensively investigated factors influencing film cooling effectiveness, including blowing ratio and hole geometry configurations. However, most research has overlooked the investigation of fatigue life in film-cooled blades. This paper systematically investigates blade fatigue life under various cooling air parameters by analyzing the relationships among cooling effectiveness, stress distribution, and fatigue life. Results indicate that maximum stress concentrations occur at cooling hole locations and near the blade root at trailing edge regions. While cooling holes effectively reduce blade surface temperature, they simultaneously create stress concentration zones around the apertures. Both excessive and insufficient cooling air pressure and temperature reduce thermal fatigue life, with optimal parameters identified as 600 K cooling temperature and 0.75 MPa pressure, achieving a maximum thermal fatigue life of 3400 cycles for this blade configuration. A thermal shock test platform was established to conduct fatigue experiments under selected cooling conditions. Initial fatigue damage traces emerged at cooling holes after 1000 cycles, with progressive damage expansion observed. By 3000 cycles, cooling holes near blade tip regions exhibited the most severe failure, demonstrating near-complete functional degradation. These findings provide critical references for cooling parameter selection in practical aeroengine applications of film-cooled blades. Full article

Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) presents an alternative material for offshore wind turbine towers and blades for an energy sector whose greenhouse gas emissions are substantial. In compliance with AS/NZS 4536, this case study facilitates a specifications’ selection framework that embraces a validated, cost–benefit determination via life cycle cost analyses (LCCA) specification comparisons. A structured consultation with three key Western Australian offshore industry experts, compliant with a standard phenomenological qualitative approach, further facilitates offshore wind turbine (OWT), LCCA cost comparisons between traditional steel and fibreglass components and LVL wooden components. LVL is found to have a higher capital cost but can generate long-term savings of AUD 30,400 per comparable unit less than Traditional OWT specifications, noting a 5% lower LVL operation and maintenance cost. Where decommissioning recycling facilities exist, OWT LVL specification components are encouraged. This work argues that LVL options uptake in Western Australia (WA) is both practicable and whole-cost effective. Full article

Inconel 600 alloy has gained consideration as a favourable material for heat and power applications, particularly in turbine blades, due to its superior mechanical behaviour encompassing strength, toughness, oxidation resistance, and ductility. Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding is one of the preferred techniques for joining these alloys. Therefore, the investigation of the mechanical behaviour after the welding process is crucial for selecting the appropriate technique for joining Inconel 600 sheets. This research focuses on investigating the microstructure and mechanical behaviour of TIG-welded Inconel 600 through a series of tests, such as tensile, fatigue, creep, and hardness evaluations. In addition, microstructural analysis is combined with these mechanical evaluations to simulate the operating conditions experienced by turbine blades. Key parameters such as yield strength, tensile strength, and elongation have been evaluated through these analyses. The Ramberg–Osgood relationship has been investigated using the engineering and true stress–strain curves obtained from the welded specimens. The results of the fatigue test illustrate the relationship between strain amplitude and the number of cycles to failure for single and double-edge notched specimens. The test was performed at two different loads including 400 MPa and 250 MPa at a constant temperature of 650 °C, and the corresponding strain-time curves were recorded. The results showed rapid creep failure at 650 °C, suggesting that TIG welding may need to be optimized for high temperature applications. Full article

In this study, a conceptual turbine blade model with internal cooling channels was designed and fabricated using the selective laser melting (SLM) process. The optimal manufacturing orientation was evaluated through simulations, and the results indicated that vertical orientation yielded the best outcomes, minimizing support material usage and distortion despite increased manufacturing time. Two configurations were produced, namely, an entire-turbine blade model and a cross-sectional model. Non-destructive analyses, including 3D laser scanning for dimensional accuracy, surface roughness measurements, and liquid penetrant testing, were conducted. Visual inspection revealed manufacturing limitations, particularly in the cooling channels at the leading and trailing edges. The trailing edge was too thin to accommodate the 0.5 mm channel diameter, and the channels in the leading edge were undersized and potentially clogged with unmelted powder. The dimensional deviations were within the acceptable limits for the SLM-fabricated metal parts. The surface roughness measurements were aligned with the literature values for metal additive manufacturing. Liquid penetrant testing confirmed the absence of cracks, pores, and lack-of-fusion defects. The SLM is a viable manufacturing process for turbine blades with internal cooling channels; however, significant attention should be paid to the design of additive manufacturing conditions to obtain the best results after manufacturing. To meet the increasingly stringent performance indicators of gas turbines, the turbine inlet temperature has increased, and variable geometry turbine technology is widely applied. Therefore, this study developed a quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) method for variable geometry turbine performance considering cooling air mixing based on the elementary blade method and the cooling airflow mixing model. To address the high-dimensional, multi-variable data fitting problem of variable geometry turbines considering the effects of cooling air, this study adopted a BP neural network to further establish a surrogate model for variable geometry turbine performance. A sensitivity analysis of a single-stage turbine was conducted. The variable geometry cooling performance of a single-stage turbine and an E3 five-stage low-pressure air turbine were calculated, and the corresponding surrogate models were established. The relative errors between the calculated mass flow rate and efficiency of the single-stage turbine and the experimental values were no more than 0.70% and 4.44%, respectively; for the five-stage air turbine, the maximum relative errors in mass flow rate and efficiency were no more than 1.67% and 1.385%, respectively. When the throat area of the single-stage turbine nozzle changed by ±30%, the maximum relative errors between the calculated mass flow rate and efficiency and their experimental values were 3.602% and 4.228%, respectively; thus, the determination coefficients of the constructed BP neural network model for the training samples were all greater than 0.999, indicating that the surrogate model has high prediction accuracy and strong generalization ability and can quickly predict variable geometry turbine cooling performance. K417G superalloy is widely applied in gas turbine components such as blades, vanes, and nozzles. In this work, the oxidation behavior and mechanism of K417G alloy prepared by wide-gap brazing were investigated in air at 800, 900, 1000, and 1100 °C. Microstructures of the bonded joints differ in the wide-gap braze region (WGBR) and base metal (BM). The surface and cross-sectional morphology, composition, and structure of specimens were analyzed by XRD, SEM, and EDS after oxidation tests. The experimental data demonstrate that the WGBR (wide-gap brazed region) exhibits markedly superior oxidation resistance compared to the BM (base material) under elevated-temperature conditions exceeding 1000 °C. This performance disparity is quantitatively validated by oxidation kinetics analysis, where the weight gain curve of the WGBR demonstrates parabolic oxidation kinetics, as evidenced by its significantly lower parabolic rate constant relative to the BM. The oxide layers of the BM and WGBR are similar after oxidation at high temperatures of 800–900 °C, and they consist of an outermost layer of NiO, a middle mixed layer of Cr2O3, and an innermost layer of dendritic Al2O3. However, when the temperature is between 1000 and 1100 °C, the NiO on the surface of the BM spalls of due to thermal expansion coefficient mismatch in coarse-grained regions, resulting in oxidation mainly divided into outer layer Cr2O3 and inner layer Al2O3 and TiO2. Under high-temperature oxidation conditions (1000–1100 °C), a structural transition occurs in the oxide scale of the BM, with the underlying mechanism attributable to grain-coarsening-induced oxide scale destabilization. Specifically, the coarse-grained structure of the BM (characteristic grain size exceeding 50 μm) is exhibited. Therefore, the WGBR demonstrates outstanding oxidation resistance, as evidenced by the formation of a continuous Al2O3 scale with parabolic rate constants of about 1.38 × 10−3 mg2·cm−4·min−1 at 1100 °C. Existing intelligent fault diagnosis methods have been widely developed and proven to be effective in monitoring the operating status of key mechanical components. However, centrifugal fans, as important equipment in energy and manufacturing industries, have been used for a long time in complex and harsh environments such as boiler plants and gas turbines. Therefore, the vibration signals they generate show complex and diverse characteristics, which brings great challenges to the monitoring of centrifugal fan operation status. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a centrifugal fan blade fault diagnosis method based on a modulational depthwise convolution (DWconv)–one-dimensional convolution neural network (MDC-1DCNN). Specifically, firstly, a convolutional modulation module (CMM) with strong local perception and global modeling capability is designed by drawing on the Transformer self-attention mechanism and global context modeling idea. Second, multiple DWconv layers of different sizes are introduced to capture high-frequency shocks and low-frequency fluctuation information of different frequencies and durations in the signal. Next, a DWconv layer of size 11 is embedded in the multilayer perceptron to enhance spatial information representation while saving computational resources. Finally, to verify the effectiveness of the method, this paper simulates and analyzes the actual working state of centrifugal fan blades, constructs a simulation dataset, and builds a centrifugal fan experimental bench to obtain a real dataset. The experimental results show that the MDC-1DCNN framework significantly outperforms the existing methods in both simulation and experimental bench datasets, fully proving its versatility and effectiveness in centrifugal fan blade fault diagnosis. The stability of thermal barrier coating (TBC) materials during service is a prerequisite for the normal operation of aircraft engines. The high-temperature corrosion of CaO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2 (CMAS) is an important factor that affects the stability of TBCs on turbine blades and causes premature engine failure. For traditional 6-8 YSZ, at temperatures of more than 1200 °C, the thermal insulation performance is significantly reduced, which makes it necessary to find new, alternative materials. La2Zr2O7 has good thermal physical properties; the addition of Ce4+ improves its mechanical properties, while adding Gd2O3 affects its corrosion resistance. Herein, high-temperature corrosion studies of (La1−xGdx)2(Zr0.7Ce0.3)2O7 (L-GZC) (x = 0, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7) ceramic TBC were conducted using CMAS glass at 1250 °C. The results indicate that CMAS rapidly dissolves L-GZC and separates the (La, Gd)8Ca2(SiO4)6O2 apatite phase, ZrO2, and other crystalline phases. These products form a crystalline layer at the contact boundary, which can inhibit further CMAS reactions. Among the coatings examined, the L-GZC ceramic (x = 0.7) exhibits better corrosion resistance, and the penetration depth is <200 μm after high-temperature corrosion at 1250 °C for 5, 10, and 20 h. The failure mechanism and potential risk of CMAS were also analyzed and discussed. The L-GZC ceramic material has good thermal corrosion resistance and is expected to replace the traditional YSZ to better meet the high-temperature working requirements of gas turbines and aircraft engines. Turbines are rotating machines that generate power by the expansion of a fluid; due to their characteristics, these turbomachines are widely applied in aerospace propulsion systems. Due to the clearance between the rotor blade tip and casing, there is a leakage flow from the blade pressure to the suction sides, which generates energy loss. There are different strategies that can be applied to avoid part of this loss; one of them is the application of so-called desensitization techniques. The application of these techniques on gas turbines has been widely evaluated; however, there is a lack of analyses of hydraulic turbines. This study is a continuation of earlier analyses conducted during the first stage of the hydraulic axial turbine used in the low-pressure oxidizer turbopump (LPOTP) of the space shuttle main engine (SSME). The previous work analyzed the application of squealer geometries at the rotor tip. In the present paper, winglet geometry techniques are investigated based on three-dimensional flowfield calculations. The commercial CFX v.19.2 and ICEM v.19.2 software were used, respectively, on the numerical simulations and computational mesh generation. Experimental results published by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and data from previous works were used on the computational model validation. The parametric analysis was conducted by varying the thickness and width of the winglet. The results obtained show that by increasing the winglet thickness, the stage efficiency is also increased. However, the geometric dimension of its width has minimal impact on this result. An average efficiency increase of 2.0% was observed across the entire turbine operational range. In the case of the squealer, for the design point, the maximum efficiency improvement was 1.62%, compared to the current improvement of 2.23% using the winglet desensitization technique. It was found that the proposed geometries application also changes the cavitation occurrence along the stage, which is a relevant result, since it can impact the turbine life cycle. Full article

Restoring components in the hot gas path of turbine engines after service-induced degradation is crucial for economic efficiency. This study investigates the printability of Rene 65 powder on a degraded first-stage turbine blade using two additive manufacturing techniques: Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) and Laser Powder Directed Energy Deposition (L-DED). Deposited material was evaluated using optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) to characterize its crystallographic texture, while microhardness testing provided insight into its mechanical properties. Our results show that L-PBF excels at replicating intricate features, such as small cooling holes, and produces a highly texturized microstructure oriented parallel to <001> under optimal parameters (80 W, 400 mm/s, unidirectional scanning), although at a slower pace. In contrast, L-DED offers a versatile, rapid, and cost-effective method for repairing medium to large parts, yielding an equiaxed microstructure and higher as-printed hardness—approaching GTD 111 values due to an aging effect from high heat input. Both processes effectively restored the dimensional integrity of degraded blade tips, paving the way for more sustainable and economical maintenance strategies in the aerospace industry. Full article

Environmental and social governance targets, as well as the global transition to cleaner renewable energy sources, push for advancements in hydrogen-based solutions for energy generators due to their high energy per unit mass (energy density) and lightweight nature. Hydrogen’s energy density and lightweight nature allow it to provide an extended range of uses without adding significant weight, potentially revolutionizing many applications. Moreover, a variety of sources, including renewable energy, can produce hydrogen, making it a potentially more sustainable option for energy storage despite its main limitations in production and transportation costs. In this framework we are proposing an innovative energy generator that might merge the benefits of batteries and hydrogen. The energy generator is based on a worldwide patented solution introduced by MIEEG s.r.l. regarding the shape of the chambers. This innovative solution can be used to design a 100% H2-fed microturbine with a high power/weight/volume ratio that works as a range extender of battery packs for a comprehensive, high-efficiency hybrid powertrain. In fact, it runs at 100,000 rpm and is designed to deliver about 100 kW in about 15 L of volume and 15 kg of weight (alternator excluded). The system is highly complex due to high firing temperatures, long life requirements, corrosion protection, mechanical and vibrational stresses, sealing, couplings, bearings, and the realization of tiny blades. This paper analyzes the main design challenges to face in the development of such complex generators, focusing on the hot gas path components, which are the most critical part of gas turbines. The contribution of additive manufacturing techniques, the adoption of special materials, and coatings have been evaluated for system improvement. Full article
