This study proposes a method for estimating the kinetic coefficient of friction (COF) for asphalt pavements by improving and applying Persson’s friction theory. The method utilizes the power spectral density (PSD) of the top surface topography instead of the full PSD to better reflect the actual contact conditions. This approach avoids including deeper roughness components that do not contribute to real rubber–pavement contact due to surface skewness. The key aspect of the method is determining an appropriate cutting plane to isolate the top surface. Four cutting strategies were evaluated. Results show that the cutting plane defined at 0.5 times the root mean square (RMS) height exhibits the highest robustness across all pavement types, with the estimated COF closely matching the measured values for all four tested surfaces. This study presents an improved method for estimating the kinetic coefficient of friction (COF) of asphalt pavements by employing the power spectral density (PSD) of the top surface roughness, rather than the total surface profile. This refinement is based on Persson’s friction theory and aims to exclude the influence of deep surface irregularities that do not make actual contact with the rubber interface. The core of the method lies in defining an appropriate cutting plane to isolate the topographical features that contribute most to frictional interactions. Four cutting strategies were investigated. Among them, the cutting plane positioned at 0.5 times the root mean square (RMS) height demonstrated the best overall applicability. COF estimates derived from this method showed strong consistency with experimentally measured values across all four tested asphalt pavement surfaces, indicating its robustness and practical potential. Although particulate matter (PM) pollution from vehicles’ exhaust has decreased significantly over the years, the contribution from non-exhaust sources (brakes, tyres) has remained at the same levels. In the European Union (EU), Euro 7 regulation introduced PM limits for vehicles’ brake systems. Regenerative braking, i.e., recuperation of the deceleration kinetic and potential energy to the vehicle battery, is one of the strategies to reduce the brake emission levels and improve vehicle efficiency. According to the regulation, the shares of friction and regenerative braking can be determined with actual testing of the vehicle on a chassis dynamometer. In this study we tested the regenerative capabilities of a plug-in hybrid vehicle, both in the laboratory and on the road, under different protocols (including both smooth and aggressive braking) and covering a wide range of driving conditions (urban, rural, motorway) over 10,000 km of driving. Good agreement was obtained between laboratory and on-road tests, with the use of the friction brakes being on average 7% and 5.3%, respectively. However, at the same time it was demonstrated that the friction braking share can vary over a wide range (up to around 30%), depending on the driver’s behaviour. Full article

In this study, the efficacy of super white cement (SWC) to improve organic soils was researched. For stabilization, 10%, 15%, and 20% proportions of SWC were added to organic soil. After improvement with SWC, Atterberg limit testing, standard Proctor tests, triaxial compression tests, and swelling and compressibility tests were performed on the organic soil. Proctor tests showed that stabilization of organic soil with SWC increased maximum dry density (MDD) and optimum moisture content (OMC) values. After stabilization, the unconfined compressional strength values of the soil increased. This increase continued until the 28th day and had a reducing trend after improvement with SWC, linked to time. In addition to the reaction between SWC and OS, the time-dependent behavior of OS also contributed to this behavior. With the increase in SWC proportions, the cohesion intercept and internal friction angle values rapidly increased until the 56th day. This increase began to reduce after the 56th day. After stabilization, the swelling percentage and compressibility values for the soil reduced. The addition of SWC within organic soil appeared to improve the engineering properties of the soil. As a new type of alloy system composed of five or more principal components, high-entropy alloys demonstrate outstanding comprehensive performance in the field of friction and wear through the synergistic effects of the high-entropy effect, lattice distortion effect, hysteresis diffusion effect and cocktail effect. This paper systematically reviews the research progress on the friction and wear properties of high-entropy alloys. The mechanisms of metal elements such as Al, Ti, Cu and Nb through solid solution strengthening, second-phase precipitation and oxide film formation were analyzed emphatically. And non-metallic elements such as C, Si, and B form and strengthen the regulation laws of their tribological properties. The influence of working conditions, such as high temperature, ocean, and hydrogen peroxide on the friction and wear behavior of high-entropy alloys by altering the wear mechanism, was discussed. The influence of test conditions such as load, sliding velocity and friction pair matching on its friction coefficient and wear rate was expounded. It is pointed out that high-entropy alloys have significant application potential in key friction components, providing reference and guidance for the further development and application of high-entropy alloys. This study investigates the bond behavior of fabric-reinforced cementitious matrix (FRCM) composites with three common masonry substrates—solid clay bricks (SBs), perforated bricks (PBs), and concrete hollow blocks (HBs)—using knitted polyester grille (KPG) fabric. Through uniaxial tensile tests of the KPG fabric and FRCM system, along with single-lap and double-lap shear tests, the interfacial debonding modes, load-slip responses, and composite utilization ratio were evaluated. Key findings reveal that (i) SB and HB substrates predominantly exhibited fabric slippage (FS) or matrix–fabric (MF) debonding, while PB substrates consistently failed at the matrix–substrate (MS) interface, due to their smooth surface texture. (ii) Prism specimens with mortar joints showed enhanced interfacial friction, leading to higher load fluctuations compared to brick units. PB substrates demonstrated the lowest peak stress (69.64–74.33 MPa), while SB and HB achieved comparable peak stresses (133.91–155.95 MPa). (iii) The FRCM system only achieved a utilization rate of 12–30% in fabric and reinforcement systems. The debonding failure at the matrix–substrate interface is one of the reasons that cannot be ignored, and exploring methods to improve the bonding performance between the matrix–substrate interface is the next research direction. HB bricks have excellent bonding properties, and it is recommended to prioritize their use in retrofit applications, followed by SB bricks. These findings provide insights into optimizing the application of FRCM reinforcement systems in masonry structures. Full article

Recent theoretical and empirical studies highlight that information asymmetry and owner–manager conflict of interest can distort corporate investment decisions. Building on this premise, we hypothesize that superior environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance mitigates these frictions by (H1) alleviating financing constraints and (H2) intensifying external analyst scrutiny. To test these hypotheses, we examine all Shanghai and Shenzhen A-share non-financial firms from 2009 to 2023. Using panel fixed-effects and two-stage least squares with an industry–province–year instrument, we find that higher ESG performance significantly reduces investment inefficiency; the effect operates through both lower financing constraints and greater analyst coverage. Heterogeneity analyses reveal that the improvement is pronounced in small non-state-owned, non-high-carbon firms but absent in large state-owned high-carbon emitters. These findings enrich the literature on ESG and corporate performance and offer actionable insights for regulators and investors seeking high-quality development. Full article

Soft soils, characterized by high compressibility, low shear strength, and high water sensitivity, pose serious challenges to geotechnical engineering in infrastructure projects. Traditional stabilization methods such as lime and cement face limitations, including environmental concerns and poor durability under chemical or cyclic loading. Ionic soil stabilizers (ISSs), which operate through electrochemical mechanisms, offer a promising alternative. However, their long-term performance—particularly under environmental stressors such as acid/alkali exposure and cyclic wetting–drying—remains insufficiently explored. This study evaluates the strength and durability of ISS-modified soil through a comprehensive experimental program, including direct shear tests, permeability tests, and cyclic wetting–drying experiments under neutral, acidic (pH = 4), and alkaline (pH = 10) environments. The results demonstrate that ISS treatment increases soil cohesion by up to 75.24% and internal friction angle by 9.50%, particularly under lower moisture conditions (24%). Permeability decreased by 88.4% following stabilization, resulting in only a 10–15% strength loss after water infiltration, compared to 40–50% in untreated soils. Under three cycles of wetting–drying, ISS-treated soils retained high shear strength, especially under acidic conditions, where degradation was minimal. In contrast, alkaline conditions caused a cohesion reduction of approximately 26.53%. These findings confirm the efficacy of ISSs in significantly improving both the mechanical performance and environmental durability of soft soils, offering a sustainable and effective solution for soil stabilization in chemically aggressive environments. This study investigates the improvement effect and micro-mechanism of guar gum and palm fibers, two eco-friendly materials, on expansive soil. The study uses disintegration tests, unconfined compressive strength tests, triaxial compression tests, and SEM analysis to evaluate the enhancement of mechanical properties. The results show that the guar gum–palm fiber composite significantly improves the compressive and shear strength of expansive soil. The optimal ratio is 2% guar gum, 0.4% palm fiber, and 6 mm palm fiber length. Increasing fiber length initially boosts and then reduces unconfined compressive strength. Guar gum increases unconfined compressive strength by 187.18%, further improved by 20.9% with palm fibers. When fiber length is fixed, increasing palm fiber content increases and then stabilizes peak stress and shear strength (cohesion and internal friction angle), improving by 27.30%, 52.1%, and 12.4%, respectively, compared to soil improved with only guar gum. Micro-analysis reveals that guar gum enhances bonding between soil particles via a gel matrix, improving water stability and mechanical properties, while palm fibers reinforce the soil and inhibit crack propagation. The synergistic effect significantly enhances composite-improved soil performance, offering economic and environmental benefits, and provides insights for expansive soil engineering management. Optimising the friction coefficient helps reduce friction losses and improve the efficiency of mechanical systems. The purpose of this study is to experimentally investigate the impact of roughness orientation on the friction coefficient in elastohydrodynamic (EHD) contact. Tests were carried out on a twin-disc machine. Three pairs of discs of identical material (nitrided steel) and geometry were tested: a smooth pair (the root mean square surface roughness Sq = 0.07 µm), a pair with transverse roughness and another with longitudinal roughness. The two rough pairs have similar roughness amplitudes (Sq = 0.5 µm). A comparison of the friction generated by these different pairs was carried out to highlight the effect of the roughness orientation under different operating conditions (oil injection temperature from 60 to 80 °C, Hertzian pressure from 1.2 to 1.5 GPa and mean rolling speed from 5 to 30 m/s). Throughout all the tests conducted in this study, longitudinal roughness resulted in higher friction than transverse, with an increase of up to 30%. Moreover, longitudinal roughness is more sensitive to variations in operating conditions. Finally, in all tests, the asperities of longitudinal roughness were found to influence the friction behaviour, unlike transverse roughness. Full article

This study presents a detailed experimental comparison of the rotordynamic and thermal performance of automotive turbochargers supported by two distinct hydrodynamic bearing configurations: fully floating ring bearings (FFRBs) and semi-floating ring bearings (SFRBs). While both designs are widely used in commercial turbochargers, they exhibit significantly different dynamic behaviors due to differences in ring motion and fluid film interaction. A cold air-driven test rig was employed to assess vibration and temperature characteristics across a range of controlled lubricant conditions. The test matrix included oil supply pressures from 2 bar (g) to 4 bar (g) and temperatures between 30 °C and 70 °C. Rotor speeds reached up to 200 krpm (thousands of revolutions per minute), and data were collected using a high-speed data acquisition system, triaxial accelerometers, and infrared (IR) thermal imaging. Rotor vibration was characterized through waterfall and Bode plots, while jump speeds and thermal profiles were analyzed to evaluate the onset and severity of instability. The results demonstrate that the FFRB configuration is highly sensitive to oil supply parameters, exhibiting strong subsynchronous instabilities and hysteresis during acceleration–deceleration cycles. In contrast, the SFRB configuration consistently provided superior vibrational stability and reduced sensitivity to lubricant conditions. Changes in lubricant supply conditions induced a jump speed variation in floating ring bearing (FRB) turbochargers that was approximately 3.47 times larger than that experienced by semi-floating ring bearing (SFRB) turbochargers. Furthermore, IR images and oil outlet temperature data confirm that the FFRB system experiences greater heat generation and thermal gradients, consistent with higher energy dissipation through viscous shear. This study provides a comprehensive assessment of both bearing types under realistic high-speed conditions and highlights the advantages of the SFRB configuration in improving turbocharger reliability, thermal performance, and noise suppression. The findings support the application of SFRBs in high-performance automotive systems where mechanical stability and reduced frictional losses are critical. Full article

Aluminum matrix composites provide an ideal solution for lightweight brake disks, but conventional casting processes are prone to crack initiation due to inhomogeneous reinforcement dispersion, gas porosity, and inadequate toughness. To break the conventional trade-off between high wear resistance and low toughness of brake disks, this study fabricated a bimetallic structure of SiCp/Al–Fe–V–Si aluminum matrix composite and cast ZL101 alloy using friction stir lap welding (FSLW). Then, the microstructural evolution, mechanical properties, and tribological behavior of the FSLW joints were studied by XRD, SEM, TEM, tensile testing, and tribological tests. The results showed that the FSLW process homogenized the distribution of SiC particle reinforcements in the SiCp/Al–Fe–V–Si composites. The Al12(Fe,V)3Si heat-resistant phase was not decomposed or coarsened, and the mechanical properties were maintained. The FSLW process refined the grains of the ZL101 aluminum alloy through recrystallization and fragmented eutectic silicon, improving elongation to 22%. A metallurgical bond formed at the joint interface. Tensile fracture occurred within the ZL101 matrix, demonstrating that the interfacial bond strength exceeded the alloy’s load-bearing capacity. In addition, the composites exhibited significantly enhanced wear resistance after FSLW, with their wear rate reduced by approximately 40% compared to the as-received materials, which was attributed to the homogenized SiC particle distribution and the activation of an oxidative wear mechanism. To address the unclear coupling mechanism between thermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication (TEHL) and dynamic behaviors in planetary gear systems, a novel tribo-dynamic model for dual-star planetary gears considering TEHL effects is proposed. In this model, a TEHL surrogate model is first established to determine the oil film thickness and sliding friction force along the tooth meshing line. Subsequently, the dynamic model of the dual-star planetary gear transmission system is developed through coordinate transformations of the dual-star gear train. Finally, by integrating lubrication effects into both time-varying mesh stiffness and time-varying backlash, a tribo-dynamic model for the dual-star planetary gear transmission system is established. The study reveals that the lubricant film thickness is positively correlated with relative sliding velocity but negatively correlated with unit line load. Under high-speed conditions, a thickened oil film induces premature meshing contact, leading to meshing impacts. In contrast, under high-torque conditions, tooth deformation dominates meshing force fluctuations while lubrication influence diminishes. By establishing a test bench for the planetary gear transmission system, the obtained simulation conclusions are verified. This research provides theoretical and experimental support for the design of high-reliability planetary gear systems. Full article

WS2 coating, as a solid lubricating material, plays a significant role in the lubrication of rotating components in spacecraft. During the launch process, however, spacecraft are exposed to high-temperature and humid atmospheric environments, which can lead to oxidative failure in the coating, thereby limiting its engineering applications. By doping with B elements, B/WS2 was successfully prepared as a composite coating. The results demonstrate that the fabricated coating exhibits excellent high-temperature tribological performance in atmospheric environments. The mechanism through which B doping improves the high-temperature friction and wear properties of the WS2 composite coating was revealed through high-temperature friction and wear tests. With the incorporation of B elements, the average friction coefficient of the coating was 0.071, and the wear rate was 7.63 × 10−7 mm3·N−1·m−1, with the wear mechanisms identified as abrasive wear and spalling. Due to high-temperature oxidation, thermal decomposition effects, and the formation of WB4 during sputtering, the wear resistance and anti-plastic deformation capability of the coating were further improved. Compared to room-temperature test conditions, the B/WS2 composite coating at different high temperatures exhibited superior friction coefficients and wear rates. Notably, at 150 °C, the average friction coefficient was as low as 0.015, and the wear forms were abrasive wear and adhesive wear. Full article

This study investigates the friction stir joining of AA6082-T6 aluminum alloy and Noryl GFN2 polymer in a buttstrap configuration, targeting the development of lightweight cylindrical-shaped structures where the polymer provides thermal, chemical, and electrical insulation, while the aluminum ensures mechanical integrity. A parametric analysis was carried out to assess the ability to produce friction stir buttstrap composite panels in a single processing step and assess the resulting tensile and flexural behavior. To that end, travel and rotating speeds ranging from 2150 to 2250 rpm, and 100 to 140 mm/min, respectively, were employed while keeping plunge depth and the tilt angle constant. A total of nine composite joints were successfully produced and subsequently subjected to both tensile and four-point bending tests. The tensile and flexural strength results ranged from 80 to 139 MPa, and 39 to 47 MPa, respectively. Moreover, the microstructural examination revealed that all joints exhibited a defect within the joining region and its size and shape had a significant effect on tensile strength, whereas the flexural strength was less affected with more uniform results. The joining region was also characterized by a decrease in hardness, particularly in the pin-affected region on the aluminum end of the joint, exhibiting a W-shaped pattern. Contrarily, on the polymeric end of the joining region, no significant change in hardness was observed. Full article

Lubrication between the rail gauge face and wheel flange is necessary to improve vehicle performance and reduce component wear. One way to achieve this is to use a solid stick loaded against the wheel flange. This paper details twin-disc testing of eight stick products according to Annex H of EN 15427-2-1:2022 (previously Annex L of EN 16028:2012) and then describes a new assessment methodology using conditions more relevant to field application. EN 15427-2-1:2022 specifies a test involving the application of the product during wheel–rail specimen contact. Once a specified time has elapsed, product application ceases, and performance is assessed as the time taken for the friction coefficient to return to a nominal dry value. This is described as “retentivity”. In the new test, the product is applied whilst wheel and rail are out of contact, to allow the product to build up on the wheel, then the specimens are put into contact, under conditions representing 150 m of continuous, heavy flange contact; this process is repeated a set number of times. The new test showed that products that failed the current friction criteria successfully protect the wheel and rail from wear, which is ultimately the aim of the product application. Full article
