Cardiovascular disease encompasses a wide group of conditions that affect the heart and blood vessels. Of these diseases, cardiomyopathies and arrhythmias specifically have been well-studied in their relationship to cardiac dyads, nanoscopic structures that connect electrical signals to muscle contraction. The proper development and positioning of dyads is essential in excitation–contraction (EC) coupling and, thus, beating of the heart. Three proteins, namely CMYA5, JPH2, and BIN1, are responsible for maintaining the dyadic cleft between the T-tubule and junctional sarcoplasmic reticulum (jSR). Various other dyadic proteins play integral roles in the primary function of the dyad—translating a propagating action potential (AP) into a myocardial contraction. Ca2+, a secondary messenger in this process, acts as an allosteric activator of the sarcomere, and its cytoplasmic concentration is regulated by the dyad. Loss-of-function mutations have been shown to result in cardiomyopathies and arrhythmias. Adeno-associated virus (AAV) gene therapy with dyad components can rescue dyadic dysfunction, which results in cardiomyopathies and arrhythmias. Overall, the dyad and its components serve as essential mediators of calcium homeostasis and excitation–contraction coupling in the mammalian heart and, when dysfunctional, result in significant cardiac dysfunction, arrhythmias, morbidity, and mortality. A Safety-Based Approach for the Design of an Innovative Microvehicle

The growing popularity of Personal Light Electric Vehicles (PLEVs), such as e-scooters, has revolutionized urban mobility by offering compact, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly transportation solutions. However, safety concerns, including inadequate infrastructure, poor protective measures, and high accident rates, remain critical challenges. This paper presents the design and development of an innovative self-balancing microvehicle under the H2020 LEONARDO project, which aims to address these challenges through advanced engineering and user-centric design. The vehicle combines features of monowheels and e-scooters, integrating cutting-edge technologies to enhance safety, stability, and usability. The design adheres to European regulations, including Germany’s eKFV standards, and incorporates user preferences identified through representative online surveys of 1500 PLEV users. These preferences include improved handling on uneven surfaces, enhanced signaling capabilities, and reduced instability during maneuvers. The prototype features a lightweight composite structure reinforced with carbon fibers, a high-torque motorized front wheel, and multiple speed modes tailored to different conditions, such as travel in pedestrian areas, use by novice riders, and advanced users. Braking tests demonstrate deceleration values of up to 3.5 m/s2, comparable to PLEV market standards and exceeding regulatory minimums, while smooth acceleration ramps ensure rider stability and safety. Additional features, such as identification plates and weight-dependent motor control, enhance compliance with local traffic rules and prevent misuse. The vehicle’s design also addresses common safety concerns, such as curb navigation and signaling, by incorporating large-diameter wheels, increased ground clearance, and electrically operated direction indicators. Future upgrades include the addition of a second rear wheel for enhanced stability, skateboard-like rear axle modifications for improved maneuverability, and hybrid supercapacitors to minimize fire risks and extend battery life. With its focus on safety, regulatory compliance, and rider-friendly innovations, this microvehicle represents a significant advancement in promoting safe and sustainable urban mobility. Full article

This paper proposes a pseudo full-channel signal integrity (SI) simulation method tailored for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) interconnects. In this approach, real interconnect models are applied to selected portions of the channel, while the remaining sections are replaced with synchronized current loads that emulate the electrical behavior of actual signal transmission. This technique enables accurate modeling of the HBM interface under full-channel parallel data transfer conditions. In addition to the simulation methodology itself, this study focuses on three specific implementation schemes for the synchronized current loads and explores their practical applications. Comparative analysis demonstrates the necessity and effectiveness of using synchronized current loads as substitutes for real transmission loads, offering a viable and efficient solution for SI analysis in HBM interconnect systems. Background: Induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (iPSC-CMs) hold transformative potential for cardiovascular regenerative medicine, yet their clinical application is hindered by suboptimal mitochondrial maturation and metabolic inefficiencies. This systematic review evaluates targeted strategies for optimizing mitochondrial function, integrating metabolic preconditioning, substrate selection, and pathway modulation to enhance energy production and cellular resilience. Additionally, we examine the role of extracellular matrix stiffness and mechanical stimulation in mitochondrial adaptation, given their influence on metabolism and maturation. Methods: A comprehensive analysis of recent advancements in iPSC-CM maturation was conducted, focusing on metabolic interventions that enhance mitochondrial structure and function. Studies employing metabolic preconditioning, lipid and amino acid supplementation, and modulation of key signaling pathways, including PGC-1α, AMPK, and mTOR, were reviewed. Computational modeling approaches predicting optimal metabolic shifts were assessed, alongside insights into reactive oxygen species (ROS) signaling, calcium handling, and the impact of electrical pacing on energy metabolism. Results: Evidence indicates that metabolic preconditioning with fatty acids and oxidative phosphorylation enhancers improves mitochondrial architecture, cristae density, and ATP production. Substrate manipulation fosters a shift toward adult-like metabolism, while pathway modulation refines mitochondrial biogenesis. Computational models enhance precision, predicting interventions that best align iPSC-CM metabolism with native cardiomyocytes. The synergy between metabolic and biomechanical cues offers new avenues for accelerating maturation, bridging the gap between in vitro models and functional cardiac tissues. Conclusions: Strategic metabolic optimization is essential for overcoming mitochondrial immaturity in iPSC-CMs. By integrating biochemical engineering, predictive modeling, and biomechanical conditioning, a robust framework emerges for advancing iPSC-CM applications in regenerative therapy and disease modeling. These findings pave the way for more physiologically relevant cell models, addressing key translational challenges in cardiovascular medicine. Full article

Inter-turn short-circuit (ITSC) faults in permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) present a significant reliability challenge in electric vehicle (EV) drivetrains, particularly under non-stationary operating conditions characterized by inverter-driven transients, variable loads, and magnetic saturation. Existing diagnostic approaches, including motor current signature analysis (MCSA) and wavelet-based methods, are primarily designed for steady-state conditions and rely on manual feature selection, limiting their applicability in real-time embedded systems. Furthermore, the lack of publicly available, high-fidelity datasets capturing the transient dynamics and nonlinear flux-linkage behaviors of PMSMs under fault conditions poses an additional barrier to developing data-driven diagnostic solutions. To address these challenges, this study introduces a simulation framework that generates a comprehensive dataset using finite element method (FEM) models, incorporating magnetic saturation effects and inverter-driven transients across diverse EV operating scenarios. Time-frequency features extracted via Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) from stator current signals are used to train a Transformer model for automated ITSC fault detection. The Transformer model, leveraging self-attention mechanisms, captures both local transient patterns and long-range dependencies within the time-frequency feature space. This architecture operates without sequential processing, in contrast to recurrent models such as LSTM or RNN models, enabling efficient inference with a relatively low parameter count, which is advantageous for embedded applications. The proposed model achieves 97% validation accuracy on simulated data, demonstrating its potential for real-time PMSM fault detection. Additionally, the provided dataset and methodology contribute to the facilitation of reproducible research in ITSC diagnostics under realistic EV operating conditions. Full article

Energy harvesting systems (EHSs) are widely used to power wireless sensors. Piezoelectric harvesters have the advantage of producing an electric signal directly related to the exciting force and can thus be used to power condition monitoring sensors in dynamically loaded structures such as bridges. The need for such monitoring is exemplified by the fact that the condition of close to 25% of public roadway bridges in, e.g., Germany is not satisfactory. Stack-based piezoelectric energy harvesting systems (pEHSs) installed near bridge bearings could provide information about the traffic and dynamic loads on the one hand and condition-dependent changes in the bridge characteristics on the other. This paper presents an approach to co-optimizing the design of the mechanical and electrical components using a nonlinear solver. Such an approach has not been described in the open literature to the best of the authors’ knowledge. The mechanical excitation is estimated through a finite element simulation, and the electric circuitry is modeled in Simulink to account for the nonlinear characteristics of rectifying diodes. We use real traffic data to create statistical randomized scenarios for the optimization and statistical variation. A main result of this work is that it reveals the strong dependence of the energy output on the interaction between bridge, harvester, and traffic details. A second result is that the methodology yields design criteria for the harvester such that the energy output is maximized. Through the case study of an actual middle-sized bridge in Germany, we demonstrate the feasibility of harvesting a time-averaged power of several milliwatts throughout the day. Comparing the total amount of harvested energy for 1000 randomized traffic scenarios, we demonstrate the suitability of pEHS to power wireless sensor nodes. In addition, we show the potential sensory usability for traffic observation (vehicle frequency, vehicle weight, axle load, etc.). Full article

Lubricant condition analysis is a valuable diagnostic tool for assessing engine performance and ensuring the reliable operation of diesel engines. While traditional diagnostic techniques—such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR)—are constrained by slow response times, high costs, and the need for specialized personnel. In contrast, dielectric spectroscopy, impedance analysis, and soft computing offer real-time, non-destructive, and cost-effective alternatives. This review examines recent advances in integrating these techniques to predict lubricant properties, evaluate wear conditions, and optimize maintenance scheduling. In particular, dielectric and impedance spectroscopies offer insights into electrical properties linked to oil degradation, such as changes in viscosity and the presence of wear particles. When combined with soft computing algorithms, these methods enhance data analysis, reduce reliance on expert interpretation, and improve predictive accuracy. The review also addresses challenges—including complex data interpretation, limited sample sizes, and the necessity for robust models to manage variability in real-world operations. Future research directions emphasize miniaturization, expanding the range of detectable contaminants, and incorporating multi-modal artificial intelligence to further bolster system robustness. Collectively, these innovations signal a shift from reactive to predictive maintenance strategies, with the potential to reduce costs, minimize downtime, and enhance overall engine reliability. This comprehensive review provides valuable insights for researchers, engineers, and maintenance professionals dedicated to advancing diesel engine lubricant monitoring. Full article

This paper presents a structured and experimentally validated approach to the parameter identification, modeling, and real-time speed control of a brushless DC (BLDC) motor. Electrical parameters, including resistance and inductance, were measured through DC and AC testing under controlled conditions, respectively, while mechanical and electromagnetic parameters such as the back electromotive force (EMF) constant and rotor inertia were determined experimentally using an AVL dynamometer. The back EMF was obtained by operating the motor as a generator under varying speeds, and inertia was identified using a deceleration method based on the relationship between angular acceleration and torque. The identified parameters were used to construct a transfer function model of the motor, which was implemented in MATLAB/Simulink R2024b and validated against real-time experimental data using sinusoidal and exponential input signals. The comparison between simulated and measured speed responses showed strong agreement, confirming the accuracy of the model. A proportional–integral (PI) controller was developed and implemented for speed regulation, using a low-cost National Instruments (NI) USB-6009 data acquisition (DAQ) and a Kelly controller. A first-order low-pass filter was integrated into the control loop to suppress high-frequency disturbances and improve transient performance. Experimental tests using a stepwise reference speed profile demonstrated accurate tracking, minimal overshoot, and robust operation. Although the modeling and control techniques applied are well known, the novelty of this work lies in its integration of experimental parameter identification, real-time validation, and practical hardware implementation within a unified and replicable framework. This approach provides a solid foundation for further studies involving more advanced or adaptive control strategies for BLDC motors. Full article

This case study focuses on Lightning-induced Electron Precipitation (LEP), analyzing amplitude and phase variations in VLF signals recorded in Belgrade, Serbia, from worldwide transmitters. Due to the localized, transient nature of Energetic Electron Precipitation (EEP) events and the path-dependence of VLF responses, research relies on event-specific case studies to model reflection height and sharpness via numerical simulations. Findings show LIEs are typically under 1000 × 500 km, with varying internal structure. Accumulated case studies and corresponding data across diverse conditions contribute to a broader understanding of ionospheric dynamics and space weather effects. These findings enhance regional modeling, support aerosol–electricity climate research, and underscore the value of VLF-based ionospheric monitoring and collaboration in Europe. Full article

Electrical connectors play a vital role in ensuring reliable signal transmission in high-frequency microsystems. This study explores the impact of microscale scratch-induced surface roughness on the alternating current (AC) contact impedance of RF coaxial connectors. Unlike traditional approaches that assume idealized surface conditions, controlled micro-defects were introduced at the central contact interface to establish a quantitative relationship between surface morphology and signal degradation. An equivalent circuit model was constructed to account for local impedance variations and the cumulative effects of cascaded connector interfaces. The model was validated using S-parameter measurements obtained from vector network analyzer (VNA) testing, showing strong agreement with simulation results. Experimental results reveal that the low-roughness (0.4 μm) contact surfaces lead to degraded signal integrity due to insufficient micro-contact formation. In contrast, scratch-induced moderate roughness (0.8–4.8 μm) improves transmission performance, although signal quality declines as roughness increases within this range. These effects are further amplified in multi-connector configurations due to accumulated impedance mismatches. This work provides new insight into the coupling between microscale surface features and frequency-domain transmission characteristics, offering practical guidance for surface engineering, contact design, and the development of miniaturized, high-reliability radio frequency interconnects for next-generation communication systems. Obtaining stable ECG signals under both static and dynamic conditions, while ensuring comfortable wear, is a prerequisite for fabric-electrode applications. It is necessary to study the wearing pressure of fabric electrodes as well as their organizational structure. In this study, fabric electrodes with different organizational structures (plain weave, twill weave, and satin weave) were prepared using silver-plated nylon conductive yarns as weft yarns and polyester yarns as warp yarns. The electrical characteristics of these structures of fabric electrodes were analyzed under different wearing pressures (2 kPa, 3 kPa, 4 kPa, and 5 kPa), and their effects on the quality of static and dynamic ECG signals acquired from human body were examined. The results showed that the contact impedance of the twill and satin weave structured electrodes with the skin was smaller and more stable than that of the plain weave structured electrodes. Furthermore, when a wearing pressure of 3–4 kPa was applied to the satin-structured electrodes, they not only provided satisfactory comfort but also collected stable static and dynamic ECG signals during daily exercise. These results can provide a reference for the application of fabric electrodes in ECG monitoring devices and an important basis for the design of intelligent ECG clothing. Full article

In high-voltage transmission lines, insulators subjected to prolonged electromechanical stress are prone to zero-value defects, leading to insulation failure and posing significant risks to power grid reliability. The conventional detection method of spark gap is vulnerable to environmental interference, while the emerging electric field distribution-based techniques require complex instrumentation, limiting its applications in scenes of complex structures and atop tower climbing. To address these challenges, this study proposes an electroluminescent sensing strategy for zero-value insulator identification based on the electroluminescence of ZnS:Cu. Based on the stimulation of electrical stress, real-time monitoring of the health status of insulators was achieved by applying the composite of epoxy and ZnS:Cu onto the connection area between the insulator steel cap and the shed. Experimental results demonstrate that healthy insulators exhibit characteristic luminescence, whereas zero-value insulators show no luminescence due to a reduced drop in electrical potential. Compared with conventional detection methods requiring access of electric signals, such non-contact optical detection method offers high fault-recognition accuracy and real-time response capability within milliseconds. This work establishes a novel intelligent sensing paradigm for visualized condition monitoring of electrical equipment, demonstrating significant potential for fault diagnosis in advanced power systems. Large turbine generators rely on shaft earthing brushes to safely divert harmful shaft currents to ground, protecting bearings from electrical damage. This paper presents a novel deep learning-based diagnostic framework to detect and classify faults in shaft earthing brushes of large turbine generators. A key innovation lies in the use of FFT-derived spectrograms from both voltage and current waveforms as dual-channel inputs to the CNN, enabling automatic feature extraction of time–frequency patterns associated with different SEB fault types. The proposed framework combines advanced signal processing and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to automatically recognize fault-related patterns in shaft grounding current and voltage signals. In the approach, raw time-domain signals are converted into informative time–frequency representations, which serve as input to a CNN model trained to distinguish normal and faulty conditions. The framework was evaluated using data from a fleet of large-scale generators under various brush fault scenarios (e.g., increased brush contact resistance, loss of brush contact, worn out brushes, and brush contamination). Experimental results demonstrate high fault detection accuracy (exceeding 98%) and the reliable identification of different fault types, outperforming conventional threshold-based monitoring techniques. The proposed deep learning framework offers a novel intelligent monitoring solution for predictive maintenance of turbine generators. The contributions include the following: (1) the development of a specialized deep learning model for shaft earthing brush fault diagnosis, (2) a systematic methodology for feature extraction from shaft current signals, and (3) the validation of the framework on real-world fault data. This work enables the early detection of brush degradation, thereby reducing unplanned downtime and maintenance costs in power generation facilities. Full article

This paper presents a novel wireless control framework for electric drive systems by employing a fuzzy brain emotional learning neural network (FBELNN) controller in conjunction with a Disturbance Observer (DO). The communication scheme uses chaotic system dynamics to ensure data confidentiality and robustness against disturbance in wireless environments. To be applied to embedded microprocessors, the continuous-time chaotic system is discretized using the Grunwald–Letnikov approximation. To avoid the loss of generality of chaotic behavior, Lyapunov exponents are computed to validate the preservation of chaos in the discrete-time domain. The FBELNN controller is then developed to synchronize two non-identical chaotic systems under different initial conditions, enabling secure data encryption and decryption. Additionally, the DOB is introduced to estimate and mitigate the effects of bounded uncertainties and external disturbances, enhancing the system’s resilience to stealthy attacks. The proposed control structure is experimentally implemented on a wireless communication system utilizing ESP32 microcontrollers (Espressif Systems, Shanghai, China) based on the ESP-NOW protocol. Both control and feedback signals of the electric drive system are encrypted using chaotic states, and real-time decryption at the receiver confirms system integrity. Experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed method in achieving robust synchronization, accurate signal recovery, and a reliable wireless control system. The combination of FBELNN and DOB demonstrates significant potential for real-time, low-cost, and secure applications in smart electric drive systems and industrial automation. Full article

Topological insulators (TIs) hold considerable promise for the advancement of optoelectronic technologies, including spectroscopy, imaging, and communication, owing to their remarkable optical and electrical characteristics. This study proposes a novel combination of Bi2Se3 TIs and ReSe2 for self-powered broadband photodetectors with high sensitivity and fast response time. The Bi2Se3/ReSe2 heterojunction photodetector achieves broadband response spectra ranging for 375 nm to 1 μm. It demonstrates a significant responsivity of 64 mA/W at a wavelength of 600 nm (1 mW/cm2), exhibits a rapid response speed of 345 μs rise/336 μs fall time, and has a 3 dB bandwidth of 1.4 kHz under zero-bias conditions. The high performance can be attributed to the suitable energy band structure of Bi2Se3/ReSe2 and high carrier mobility in surface states of Bi2Se3. Excitingly, self-powered TIs photodetectors allow for high-quality signal transmission. The TIs employed in photodetectors can stimulate the production of new optoelectronic features, but they could also be used for highly integrated photonic circuits in the future. Full article
