The 2020 southern Puerto Rico earthquake sequence highlighted the severe seismic vulnerability of informally constructed two-story reinforced concrete (RC) houses. This study examines the failure mechanisms of these structures and assesses the effectiveness of first-floor RC shear-wall retrofitting. Nonlinear pushover and dynamic time–history analyses were performed using fiber-based distributed plasticity models for RC frames and nonlinear macro-elements for second-floor masonry infills, which introduced a significant inter-story stiffness imbalance. A bi-directional seismic input was applied using spectrally matched, near-fault pulse-like ground motions. The findings for the as-built structures showed that stiffness mismatches between stories, along with substantial strength and stiffness differences between orthogonal axes, resulted in concentrated plastic deformations and displacement-driven failures in the first story—consistent with damage observed during the 2020 earthquakes. Retrofitting the first floor with RC shear walls notably improved the performance, doubling the lateral load capacity and enhancing the overall stiffness. However, the retrofitted structures still exhibited a concentration of inelastic action—albeit with lower demands—shifted to the second floor, indicating potential for further optimization. The superb dynamic performance of steel-plate composite (SC) structures under unexpected impact loading depends on the good design of the connection between the SC wall and foundation. This study investigated the flexural behavior and dynamic responses of SC wall-to-foundation connections subjected to low-velocity impact. Impact tests were performed on three SC connection specimens to evaluate failure mode, impact force, deflection, and strain responses. The effects of concrete strength grade and impact energy were analyzed in detail. All specimens exhibited flexural failure, with three distinct stages observed during impact. The experimental results demonstrated that compared to the specimen with C30 concrete, the specimen with C50 concrete significantly reduced wall damage, decreased deflections, and enhanced deflection recovery ability. It can be concluded that increasing the concrete strength grade effectively improves the impact resistance of SC wall-to-foundation connections. In addition, peak impact force, global deflection response, residual strains, and interface crack length were highly sensitive to changes in impact energy, whereas deflection recovery exhibited lower sensitivity. Furthermore, a finite element model was developed and validated against experimental results. Parametric studies explored the influence of key parameters with expanded ranges on the impact responses of SC wall-to-foundation connections. Full article

This study presents a comprehensive non-destructive evaluation of a broad range of construction materials using the impulse excitation of vibration (IEV) technique. Tested specimens included low- and normal-strength concrete, fiber-reinforced concrete (with basalt, polypropylene, and glass fibers), lime mortars (NHL-2 and -3.5), plaster, and clay bricks (light and dark). Compressive and flexural strength tests complemented dynamic resonance testing on the same samples to ensure full mechanical characterization. Flexural and torsional resonance frequencies were used to calculate dynamic elastic modulus, shear modulus, and Poisson’s ratio. Strong correlations were observed between dynamic elastic modulus and shear modulus, supporting the compatibility of dynamic results with the classical elasticity theory. Flexural frequencies were more sensitive to material differences than torsional ones. Fiber additives, particularly basalt and polypropylene, significantly improved dynamic stiffness, increasing the dynamic elastic modulus/compressive strength ratio by up to 23%. In contrast, normal-strength concrete exhibited limited stiffness improvement despite higher strength. These findings highlight the reliability of IEV in mechanical properties across diverse material types and provide comparative reference data for concrete and masonry applications. Full article

The pull-back method for determining dynamic tensile strength assumes one-dimensional stress wave propagation and material homogeneity. This study validates these assumptions for unidirectional reinforced concrete (UDRC) through experiments and numerical simulations. Split Hopkinson pressure bar tests were conducted on plain concrete, plain UDRC, and deformed UDRC specimens containing a central 6 mm steel bar. Ultra-high-speed digital image correlation at 500,000 fps enabled precise local strain rate measurements (3 s−1 to 55 s−1) at fracture locations. Finite element simulations revealed that while reinforcement induces localized multi-axial stresses near the steel–concrete interface, the bulk concrete maintains predominantly uniaxial stress conditions. Experimental results showed less than 1% variation in pull-back velocity between specimen types. Statistical analysis confirmed a unified strain rate-strength relationship: σspall=4.1+4.7log10(ε˙)MPa, independent of reinforcement configuration (ANCOVA: p=0.2182 for interaction term). The dynamic tensile strength is governed by concrete matrix properties rather than reinforcement type. These findings are the first to experimentally and numerically validate the pull-back method’s applicability to UDRC systems, establishing that dynamic tensile failure is matrix-dominated and enabling simplified one-dimensional analysis for reinforced concrete under impact. The performance of reinforced concrete (RC) frame structures will gradually decrease over time, posing a threat to the safety of buildings. Although the performance of some buildings may still meet the safety requirements, they cannot meet new usage requirements. Therefore, this paper proposes a new-type joint to promote the development of research on the reinforcement and renovation of RC frame structures in response to this situation. The RC beams and columns of the joints are connected by embedded horizontal steel plate (a single plate with dimension of 150 mm × 200 mm × 5 mm), and the beams and columns are individually wrapped in steel. Through conducting low cyclic loading tests, this paper analyzes the influence of carrying out wrapped steel treatment and the thickness of wrapped steel of the beam and connector on mechanical performance indicators such as hysteresis curve, skeleton curve, stiffness, ductility, and energy dissipation. The experimental results indicate that the reinforcement using steel plate can significantly improve the dynamic performance of the joint. The effect of changing the thickness of the connector on the dynamic performance of the specimen is not significant, while increasing the thickness of wrapped steel of beam can effectively improve the overall strength of joint. The research results of this paper will help promote the application of reinforcement and renovation technology for existing buildings, and improve the quality of human living. Full article

The escalating global demand for fresh water, driven by urbanization and industrial growth, underscores the need for sustainable water management, particularly in the water-intensive construction sector. Although prior studies have primarily concentrated on treated wastewater, the practical viability of utilizing untreated wastewater has not been thoroughly investigated—especially in developing nations where treatment expenses frequently impede actual implementation, even for non-structural uses. While prior research has focused on treated wastewater, the potential of untreated or partially treated wastewater from diverse industrial sources remains underexplored. This study investigates the feasibility of incorporating wastewater from textile, sugar mill, service station, sewage, and fertilizer industries into concrete paver block production. The novelty lies in a dual approach, combining experimental analysis with XGBoost-based machine learning (ML) models to predict the impact of key physicochemical parameters—such as Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), and Hardness—on mechanical properties like compressive strength (CS), water absorption (WA), ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), and dynamic modulus of elasticity (DME). The ML models showed high predictive accuracy for CS (R2 = 0.92) and UPV (R2 = 0.97 direct, 0.99 indirect), aligning closely with experimental data. Notably, concrete pavers produced with textile (CP-TXW) and sugar mill wastewater (CP-SUW) attained 28-day compressive strengths of 47.95 MPa and exceeding 48 MPa, respectively, conforming to ASTM C936 standards and demonstrating the potential to substitute fresh water for non-structural applications. These findings demonstrate the viability of using untreated wastewater in concrete production with minimal treatment, offering a cost-effective, sustainable solution that reduces fresh water dependency while supporting environmentally responsible construction practices aligned with SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). Additionally, the model serves as a practical screening tool for identifying and prioritizing viable wastewater sources in concrete production, complementing mandatory laboratory testing in industrial applications. This study looked at the performance requirements of repair materials for concrete structures in cold regions, systematically analyzing the effects of steel fiber dosage (0.7–2.1%), early-strength agent PRIORITY dosage (6–10%), and their coupling effects on the workability, interfacial bond strength, and freeze–thaw resistance of rapid-hardening ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC). Through fluidity testing, bond interface failure analysis, freeze–thaw cycle testing, and pore analysis, the mechanism of steel fibers and early-strength agent on the multi-dimensional performance of fast-hardening UHPC was revealed. The results showed that when the steel fiber dosage exceeded 1.4%, the flowability was significantly reduced, while a PRIORITY dosage of 8% improved the flowability by 20.5% by enhancing the paste lubricity. Single addition of steel fibers decreased the interfacial bond strength, but compound addition of 8% PRIORITY offset the negative impact by optimizing the filling effect of hydration products. Under freeze–thaw cycles, excessive steel fibers (2.1%) exacerbated the mass loss (1.67%), whereas a PRIORITY dosage of 8% increased the retention rate of relative dynamic elastic modulus by 10–15%. Pore analysis shows that the synergistic effect of 1.4% steel fiber and 8% PRIORITY can reduce the number of pores, optimize the pore distribution, and make the structure denser. The study determined that the optimal compound mixing ratio was 1.4% steel fibers and 8% PRIORITY. This combination ensures construction fluidity while significantly improving the interfacial bond durability and freeze–thaw resistance, providing a theoretical basis for the design of concrete repair materials in cold regions. To address the limitations of traditional hardened concrete road surfaces in coal mine tunnels, which are prone to damage and entail high maintenance costs, this study proposes using modular concrete blocks composed of fly ash and coal gangue as an alternative to conventional materials. These blocks offer advantages including ease of construction and rapid, straightforward maintenance, while also facilitating the reuse of substantial quantities of solid waste, thereby mitigating resource wastage and environmental pollution. Initially, the mineral composition of the raw materials was analyzed, confirming that although the physical and chemical properties of Liangshui Well coal gangue are slightly inferior to those of natural crushed stone, they still meet the criteria for use as concrete aggregate. For concrete blocks incorporating 20% fly ash, the steam curing process was optimized with a recommended static curing period of 16–24 h, a temperature ramp-up rate of 20 °C/h, and a constant temperature of 50 °C maintained for 24 h to ensure optimal performance. Orthogonal experimental analysis revealed that fly ash content exerted the greatest influence on the compressive strength of concrete, followed by the additional water content, whereas the aggregate particle size had a comparatively minor effect. The optimal mix proportion was identified as 20% fly ash content, a maximum aggregate size of 20 mm, and an additional water content of 70%. Performance testing indicated that the fabricated blocks exhibited a compressive strength of 32.1 MPa and a tensile strength of 2.93 MPa, with strong resistance to hydrolysis and sulfate attack, rendering them suitable for deployment in weakly alkaline underground environments. Considering the site-specific conditions of the Liangshuijing coal mine, ANSYS 2020 was employed to simulate and analyze the mechanical behavior of the blocks under varying loads, thicknesses, and dynamic conditions. The findings suggest that hexagonal coal gangue blocks with a side length of 20 cm and a thickness of 16 cm meet the structural requirements of most underground mine tunnels, offering a reference model for cost-effective paving and efficient roadway maintenance in coal mines. In order to improve the durability of loess-based composite coal gangue porous planting concrete (LCPC), the effects of fly ash and slag powder content on the durability and microstructure of LCPC were studied. In this paper, fly ash and slag powder were mixed into LCPC, and freeze-thaw cycle and dry-wet cycle tests were carried out. The compressive strength, dynamic elastic modulus, and mass change were used as evaluation indices to determine the optimal mix ratio for LCPC durability. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was performed, and the experimental design was carried out with the water–cement ratio, fly ash, and slag powder content as variables. The microstructure characteristics of LCPC were analyzed. The results show that the maximum number of freeze-thaw cycles can reach 35 times and the maximum number of dry-wet cycles can reach 50 when 5% fly ash and 20% slag powder are used. With an increase in the water-cement ratio, the skeleton of the loess gradually became complete, and its structure became more compact. In the micro-morphology diagram, the mixed fly ash and slag powder particles are not obvious, but with an increase in dosage, the size of the cracks and pores gradually decreases. The incorporation of fly ash and slag powder can play a positive role in the durability of LCPC and improvement of its microstructure. The results of this study are crucial for improving the application performance of ecological restoration, soil improvement, and long-term stability of structures, and can provide a scientific basis for the sustainable development of environmentally friendly building materials. To elucidate the effects of iron ore tailings (IOTs) and basalt fiber (BF) on the durability of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) with different recycled aggregate replacement rates, this study used IOTs to replace natural sand at mass replacement rates of 0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100% and incorporated BF at volume fractions of 0%, 0.1%, 0.2%, and 0.3%. Carbonation and freeze–thaw cycle tests were conducted on C30 grade RAC. The carbonation depth and compressive strength of RAC at different carbonation ages and the mass loss rate, relative dynamic elastic modulus, and changes in compressive strength of RAC under different freeze–thaw cycle times were determined. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was utilized to meticulously observe the micro-morphological alterations of BF-IOT-RAC before and after carbonation. We then investigated the mechanisms by which BF and IOTs enhance the carbonation resistance of RAC. Utilizing the experimental data, we fitted relevant models to establish both a carbonation depth prediction model and a freeze–thaw damage prediction model specific to BF-IOT-RAC. Furthermore, we projected the service life of BF-IOT-RAC under conditions typical of northwest China. The results showed that as the dosages of the two materials increased, the carbonation resistance and frost resistance of RAC initially improved and then declined. Specifically, the optimal volume content of BF was ascertained to be 0.1%, while the optimal replacement rate of IOTs was determined to be 40%. Compared to using BF or IOTs individually, the composite incorporation of both materials significantly improves the durability of RAC while simultaneously enhancing the reuse of construction waste and mining solid waste, thereby contributing to environmental sustainability. To comprehensively investigate the compressive behavior of basalt fiber-reinforced concrete (BFRC) subjected to multiple freeze–thaw cycles, a series of quasi-static and dynamic compression tests were conducted on BFRC at various fiber volume fractions and a wide strain rate range of 1 × 10−3–420 s−1. The freeze–thaw deterioration characteristics of BFRC were analyzed from macro and micro perspectives. The influence of freeze–thaw degradation, strain rate effect, and fiber reinforcement effect on the mechanical performance of BFRC was investigated. It was found that when the fiber volume fraction was 0.2%, the fiber reinforcement performance of basalt fiber was optimal. By incorporating the damage factor of freeze–thaw cycles and the dynamic increase factor of strength into the Ottosen nonlinear elastic constitutive model, a dynamic constitutive model that considers the fiber content, strain rate enhancing effect, and freeze–thaw degradation influence was established. Although asphalt mixtures can be applied to railway tracks due to their viscoelastic properties, caution is required, as their ductility and brittleness are highly sensitive to temperature variations. In recent years, interest in the application of asphalt in railway infrastructure has increased, driven by the development of modified mixtures and the broader availability of performance-enhancing additives. Additionally, evaluation methods for railway tracks should be adapted to account for the distinct loading mechanisms involved, which differ from those of conventional roadways. In this study, the comprehensive properties of asphalt binders, mixtures, and testing methods—including physical and engineering characteristics—were assessed to improve the performance of asphalt concrete layers for potential applications in railroad infrastructure. The results of this study indicate that (1) the higher the performance grade (PG), the higher the indirect tensile strength (ITS) value achieved by the 13 mm mixture using PG76-22, which is higher than that of the PG64-22 mixture. This indicates that higher PG grades and modification contribute to improved tensile strength, beneficial for upper layers subjected to dynamic railroad loads. (2) The tensile strength ratio (TSR) increased from the unmodified mixture to over 92% in mixtures containing crumb rubber modifier (CRM) and styrenic thermoplastic elastomer (STE), demonstrating enhanced durability under freeze–thaw conditions. (3) Wheel tracking test results showed that modified mixtures exhibited more than twice the rutting resistance compared to PG64-22. Metallurgical equipment foundations exposed to prolonged 300–500 °C environments are subject to explosion risks, necessitating materials that are resistant to thermo-shock-coupled loads. This study investigated the real-time dynamic compressive behavior of high-performance concrete (HPC) reinforced with steel fibers (SFs), polypropylene fibers (PPFs), polyvinyl alcohol fibers (PVAFs), and their hybrid systems under thermo-shock coupling using real-time high-temperature (200–500 °C) SHPB tests. The results revealed temperature-dependent dynamic responses: SFs exhibited a V-shaped trend in compressive strength evolution (minimum at 400 °C), while PPFs/PVAFs showed inverted V-shaped trends (peaking at 300 °C). Hybrid systems demonstrated superior performance: SF-PVAF achieved stable dynamic strength at 200–400 °C (dynamic increase factor, DIF ≈ 1.65) due to synergistic toughening via SF bridging and PVAF melt-induced pore energy absorption. Microstructural analysis confirmed that organic fiber pores and SF crack-bridging collaboratively optimized failure modes, reducing brittle fracture. A temperature-adaptive design strategy is proposed: SF-PVAF hybrids are prioritized for temperatures of 200–400 °C, while SF-PPF combinations are recommended for 400–500 °C environments, providing critical guidance for explosion-resistant HPC in extreme thermal–industrial settings. Epoxy resin-modified concrete (ERMC) demonstrates significant potential for enhancing the durability of concrete structures exposed to harsh environmental conditions. However, the performance of ERMC under the combined effects of salt erosion and freeze–thaw cycles remains inadequately explored. This study systematically evaluates the durability of ERMC through experimental investigations on specimens with epoxy resin-poly ash ratios of 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25%. Resistance to salt erosion was assessed using composite salt solutions with concentrations of 0%, 1.99%, 9.95%, and 19.90%, while frost resistance was tested under combined conditions using a 1.99% Na2SO4 solution. Key performance metrics were analyzed with microstructural observations to elucidate the underlying damage mechanisms, including the compressive strength corrosion coefficient, dynamic elastic modulus, mass loss rate, and flexural strength loss rate. The results reveal that incorporating epoxy resin enhances concrete’s resistance to salt erosion and freeze–thaw damage by inhibiting crack propagation and reducing pore development. Optimal performance was achieved with an epoxy resin content of 10–15%, which exhibited minimal surface deterioration, a denser microstructure, and superior long-term durability. These findings provide critical insights for optimizing the design of ERMC to improve the resilience of concrete structures in aggressive environments, demonstrating that ERM is a sustainable material, and offering practical implications for infrastructure exposed to extreme climatic and chemical conditions. This study investigates the influence of steel fiber content (0~3% by volume) on the workability and mechanical properties of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) incorporating slag or fly ash. Although UHPC exhibits excellent strength and durability, its brittleness and high cost hinder broader applications. Steel fibers are known to improve mechanical performance and toughness, but their interaction with mineral admixtures remains underexplored. Flowability, compressive strength, flexural behavior, impact resistance, and microstructure were evaluated. Results show that increasing fiber content significantly reduces workability, with fly ash-based mixes showing better flowability than slag-based ones. Mechanical properties improved with higher fiber volume, and an optimal content of 2% achieved the best balance between workability and strength. Impact testing and stress–strain analysis revealed that steel fibers enhance energy absorption and toughness under dynamic loading. SEM observations at 3 days indicated initial bonding between the fibers and matrix, with minor microcracks, suggesting further strength development over time. This work offers a fresh understanding of the combined influence of steel fibers and mineral admixtures in UHPC and supports their effective application in durable and cost-efficient high-performance concrete design.
