Bacterial decomposition of sweat produces odors affecting close-fitting garment comfort. This study selected five polyester filament types: coffee carbon polyester filament (CC-PET), bamboo charcoal polyester filament (BC-PET), oyster shell polyester filament (OS-PET), graphene polyester filament (GR-PET), and conventional polyester filament (C-PET). These four yarns exemplify three mainstream deodorizing mechanisms: BC-PET relies on physical adsorption through its porous structure; CC-PET combines adsorption with antibacterial moisture management to suppress odor at the source; GR-PET and OS-PET inhibit bacteria via reactive radicals from oxygen-containing groups and calcium oxide, respectively. Three structures were tested: weft flat knit, 1 × 1 rib, and 1 + 3 false rib. 1 + 1 rib and 1 + 3 false rib differ markedly in elasticity, thickness, and hand. Plain jersey is smooth, soft, and breathable with good extensibility. 1 + 1 rib delivers superior transverse elasticity and dimensional stability. 1 + 3 false rib is loftier and stiffer with enhanced shape retention and thermal insulation. Fifteen specimens were knitted on a seamless circular machine and evaluated using ammonia adsorption rate and acetic acid adsorption rate. Results show that fiber type significantly influences deodorizing performance, with the graphene polyester filament with the 1 + 3 false rib structure achieving the best adsorption for both gases. This provides a theoretical foundation for deodorizing functional fabric development. Full article

Conventional deodorizing microbial agents exhibit poor cold tolerance. This study aimed to obtain functional strains capable of degrading ammonia and hydrogen sulfide by screening odor-polluted environments in multiple locations in Xinjiang, China. Deodorizing bacteria were isolated using selective media. Their deodorization efficiency was determined using the zinc ammonium complex salt colorimetric absorption method and the boric acid absorption Kjeldahl nitrogen determination method. The strains were identified through 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. The obtained strains were then formulated into a deodorizing microbial agent, and their combined deodorization effect was evaluated. Three ammonia-degrading strains were obtained, identified as Serratia proteamaculans, Glutamicibacter bergeri, and Shewanella putrefaciens, with maximum degradation rates reaching 52.62%, 63.81%, and 50.80%, respectively, on day 10. Additionally, two hydrogen sulfide-degrading bacteria belonging to the genus Pseudomonas, designated N16 and N56, were isolated under low-temperature conditions. Strain N16 achieved its highest degradation rate of 43.52% on day 5, while strain N56 reached 57.50% on day 10. A highly efficient deodorizing microbial agent, designated Agent E, was ultimately obtained, exhibiting an ammonia degradation rate of 52.67% and a hydrogen sulfide degradation rate of 78.74%. Background: The axillary microbiome is a major contributor to body malodor generation through bacterial metabolism of apocrine and eccrine secretions. Dysbiosis of this microbial community, particularly through overgrowth of odorigenic species such as Staphylococcus aureus, is associated with increased volatile compound production and local skin inflammation. Heat-treated postbiotics represent a promising class of cosmetic ingredients combining microbiological safety with retained bioactive properties. Objective: We aimed to evaluate the in vitro safety, molecular mechanisms, antipathogen and anti-inflammatory properties of heat-treated Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus Skinbac™ SB06, and to assess the antiperspirant and deodorant efficacy of a deodorant spray formulation containing 1% SB06 in a controlled clinical study. Methods: In vitro studies assessed cytotoxicity (MTT/LDH assays), Aquaporin-3 (AQP3) expression, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, antipathogen activity against Staphylococcus aureus (AlamarBlue assay), cytokine modulation (TNF-α, IL-6, IL-8, IL-23) in Normal Human Epidermal Keratinocytes (NHEK) and Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells (PBMCs), and axillary microbiome compatibility against Corynebacterium striatum, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Staphylococcus hominis by viable plate count (CFU/mL). Clinically, a randomized split-body study (n = 20) evaluated antiperspirant effectiveness by gravimetric sweat collection and deodorant efficacy by expert olfactory panel (Likert 1–5) at 24 and 48 h. Results: In vitro testing confirmed the safety of SB06 (MTT and LDH, both non-significant vs. control). SB06 significantly increased AQP3 expression (+20%, p < 0.001) and significantly reduced ROS production (−48%, p < 0.05). Antipathogen testing showed significant reduction in S. aureus planktonic viability (−7%, p < 0.05). Microbiome compatibility testing on selected axillary-associated strains showed a differential compatibility profile, with the strongest inhibitory effect observed for C. striatum (13% residual viability at T24h, corresponding to 87% inhibition), near-complete preservation of S. epidermidis (92% residual viability at T48h), and a mild reduction in S. hominis (−15% at T48h). Cytokine modulation showed significant IL-8 and IL-23 reduction in NHEK (both p ≤ 0.05) and immunostimulatory activity in PBMCs. Clinically, SB06 reduced sweat production vs. placebo by −21.8% at T24 (p = 0.0009) and −10.0% at T48 (p = 0.0495), with significantly lower odor intensity at both timepoints (median score 3 vs. 4, p < 0.0001). Conclusions: Heat-treated L. rhamnosus SB06 showed a multimodal in vitro profile including antipathogen, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and AQP3-upregulating activities, and was associated with statistically significant antiperspirant and deodorant effects in a randomized controlled split-body study. These findings are consistent with SB06 being a functional postbiotic ingredient with potential for deodorant and antiperspirant applications, pending confirmation in larger controlled studies. Human axillary malodor negatively influences impression-related appearance, confidence, and hygiene, and ultimately decreases quality of life. Malodor formation involves three steps: vesiculation of odorless precursors within the human body, influx of these precursors into the intracellular space of bacteria, such as Corynebacterium striatum and Staphylococcus hominis, and efflux of malodorous metabolites into the axilla after conversion by axillary malodor-releasing enzymes (AMREs). Malodor deodorants are currently in use, and their formulation strategies, based on the ingredients, can be classified as follows: anti-sweating, antiproliferation of malodor-forming bacteria, masking (neutralizing) effects against malodor, and deodorization. However, current deodorants have several adverse effects. To reduce such effects while enhancing malodor suppression, a strategy targeting the specific step in malodor formation should be developed, such as the use of ABCC11 pump inhibitors, specific bacterial active pump controllers, and AMRE blockers. Odors from pet cats can negatively affect the quality of life of cat owners. The diverse bioactive compounds in plant extracts make them a promising candidate for effective odor reduction. This study evaluated twelve plant extracts for deodorizing efficacy via in vitro fermentation tests. Rosemary extract and licorice extract exhibited better deodorizing effects, with fractions of rosemary extract below 100 Da demonstrating the most effective deodorizing performance. Based on these findings, subsequent feeding trials were conducted using rosemary extract and its fractions below 100 Da. In the feeding trial, adult British Shorthair cats were divided into three groups (Control Check, RE, and RE100) and housed in a controlled-environment respiration chamber for 30 days. Measurements included odor emissions, fecal and blood physicochemical parameters, immune parameters, microbiota composition based on 16S rRNA sequencing, and metabolome analysis. The results of the feeding trial indicated that rosemary extract significantly reduced ammonia and hydrogen sulfide emissions (46.84%, 41.64%), while fractions below 100 Da of rosemary extract achieved even greater reductions (55.62%, 53.87%). Rosemary extract regulated the intestinal microbial community, significantly increasing the relative abundance of the intestinal probiotic Bifidobacterium (p < 0.05) and reducing the population of sulfate-reducing bacteria (p < 0.05). It also significantly reduced urease and uricase activities (p < 0.05) to reduce ammonia production and inhibited the degradation of sulfur-containing proteins and sulfate reduction to reduce hydrogen sulfide emissions. Furthermore, rosemary extract significantly enhanced the immune function of British Shorthair cats (p < 0.05). This study suggests that rosemary extract, particularly its fractions below 100 Da, is a highly promising pet deodorizer. Full article

The problem of the foul odor caused by H2S in livestock farms has become a major complaints. In this study, optimal sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB) strains were screened from dairy farm wastewater and the adjacent soil for odor treatment. The strains and physiological functions were determined by identification and genome comparison, and the optimal operating conditions were determined by experiments under different conditions. The identification results showed that the strain that had the highest homology with Halomonas mongoliensis was Halomonas sp. AEB2. The comparative genomic results showed that the average nucleotide identity and DNA–DNA hybridization value were 95.8% and 68.6%, respectively. The optimization results were as follows: sodium succinate-carbon (10 g/L) and ammonium chloride-nitrogen (0.07 g/L). The optimal operating conditions were as follows: seeding rate 4%, temperature 30 °C, stirring speed 90 rpm, and pH 8. The oxidation products of AEB2 were mainly elemental sulfur and tetrathionate, and the metabolic pathway of AEB2 was constructed accordingly. This study suggests a feasible path to reduce H2S emissions from dairy farms, and it provides theoretical support for the restoration of livestock environment and sustainability. Full article

This study investigated the ability of bacterial strains to neutralize odorous substances from cattle slurry (CS). The research was performed to develop a microbial preparation for the deodorization of CS. Among the strains of bacteria (Bacillus and Pseudomonas) isolated from natural environments, those with the highest ammonia and hydrogen sulfide reduction were selected, and the bacterial consortium was prepared. The biopreparation reduced ammonia by 98% in the unshaken culture and 100% in the aeration culture, after 10 days of incubation (compared to the initial sample). Complete elimination of hydrogen sulfide was noted on day 6 of the deodorization process for both cultures. The microbiological supplementation also had a positive effect on the chemical composition of the slurry, increasing its fertilizer value. The addition of biopreparation to the slurry resulted in a reduced loss of ammonium ions and increased nitrogen concentration by 29%. It was found that the use of the microbial consortium also increased the availability of potassium and phosphorus, which can be used in agricultural production. Nitrogen retention by microorganisms in the slurry increases its organic value and leads to a reduction in the use of mineral fertilizers. Full article

Obesity has become one of the most serious chronic diseases threatening human health. Its onset and progression are closely related to the intestinal microbiota, as disruption of the intestinal flora promotes the production of endotoxins and induces an inflammatory response. This study aimed to investigate the variations in the physicochemical properties of various refined tea seed oils and their impact on intestinal microbiota disorders induced by a high-fat diet (HFD) through dietary intervention. In the present study, C57BL/6J mice on a HFD were randomly divided into three groups: HFD, T-TSO, and N-TSO. T-TSO and N-TSO mice were given traditionally refined and optimized tea seed oil for 12 weeks. The data revealed that tea seed oil obtained through degumming at 70 °C, deacidification at 50 °C, decolorization at 90 °C, and deodorization at 180 °C (at 0.06 MPa for 1 h) effectively removed impurities while minimizing the loss of active ingredients. Additionally, the optimized tea seed oil mitigated fat accumulation and inflammatory responses resulting from HFD, and reduced liver tissue damage in comparison to traditional refining methods. More importantly, N-TSO can serve as a dietary supplement to enhance the diversity and abundance of intestinal microbiota, increasing the presence of beneficial bacteria (norank_f__Muribaculaceae, Lactobacillus, and Bacteroides) while reducing pathogenic bacteria (Alistipes and Mucispirillum). Therefore, in HFD-induced obese C57BL/6J mice, N-TSO can better ameliorate obesity compared with a T-TSO diet, which is promising in alleviating HFD-induced intestinal microbiota disorders. One of the most noticeable problems associated with the close location of piggeries is gaseous compounds emission. Ammonia and hydrogen sulfide emissions affect the quality of life of people living in the vicinity of such facilities. Among the diverse methods for managing and controlling malodorous substances, biological methods, which involve the utilization of microbiological agents, are widely employed. The use of bacterial strains is a relatively simple, low-cost, and ecological method. The study aimed to conduct a preliminary evaluation of the implementation of a novel consortium of deodorizing bacteria. The study involved the selection of bacteria, assessment of the antagonistic properties, implementation of the inoculum in a mesh-filled biofilter, and analysis of ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, and fine dust content in the air before and after passing through the mature biological bed. The results obtained demonstrate the effectiveness of the biofiltration bed in reducing ammonia levels, with a maximum decrease observed at 73.90%. For hydrogen sulfide, a removal efficiency of >72.08% was observed. Reduction in fine dust pollution also decreased from a level of 3.75 mg/m3 to 1.06 mg/m3. The study’s findings demonstrate the promising potential of utilizing a consortium of deodorizing bacteria as an effective approach to mitigating emissions from piggeries. Full article

There is a growing demand for the development of functional textile sanitary products to protect the human body from viruses, bacteria, and other harmful external substances. However, common processing methods for textile functionalization result in poor durability or have a highly limited material scope. A solution for this is the encapsulation of the functional material to provide stable protection and controlled release to reveal functionality in the fabric. However, many chemicals used for such purposes can cause problems for both human beings and the environment; therefore, attention is being shifted to natural products such as essential oils and seed oils. In this study, we used in situ polymerization to encapsulate ginseng oil, which has antibacterial, deodorizing, moisturizing, and antioxidant functions, as the core material of the microcapsules. The manufactured microcapsules were spherical with smooth surfaces, had an average size of 3.98 um, and exhibited excellent thermal stability. Processing the synthesized microcapsules into nylon/polyurethane fabric resulted in excellent functionalities, with the treated fabric exhibiting a 99.9% antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae and a 99% deodorizing effect. Therefore, the developed method is expected to show great potential for the production of highly hygienic textiles for use in various industries. Full article

Hyperhidrosis is a condition characterized by excessive sweating that affects at least 5% of the world’s population. It is normally associated with unpleasant body odour which requires continuous maintenance throughout life. Antiperspirants and deodorants are the first-line treatments for hyperhidrosis. However, association of this class of product with the risk of other diseases has increased the search for an effective antiperspirant from natural sources. This study aimed to investigate the antibacterial and antiperspirant activities of Curcuma xanthorrhiza Roxb. Using an in vitro microbial assay against specific bacteria responsible for body odour and rat foot pad analysis. Quality control of the fractionated extract was conducted using reversed-phase HPLC based on two active markers: xanthorrhiza and curcumin. Toxicity tests were conducted based on the OECD guidelines (50–2000 mg/kg). Inhibition zone, MIC, and MBC values of the hexane fraction of C. xanthorrhiza showed equivalent antibacterial activity to positive control (p > 0.05). No swelling, redness, or rashes were observed at the injection area throughout the study. Treatment with 40, 80, and 160 mg/kg of the extract significantly decreased the sweat excretion up to 79.34% (p < 0.05) after 15 min compared to negative control. Histopathology analysis showed the reduced size of the secretory units in plantar sweat glands post treatment compared to negative control. In conclusion, the hexane fraction of C. xanthorrhiza is able to reduce sweat excretion in a rat model and inhibit the growth of bacteria causing body odour. Full article

Synthetic peptides, including tetraspanin CD9 peptides, are increasingly coming into focus as new treatment strategies against various organisms, including bacteria, that cause underarm odour. The use of deodorants and antiperspirants is associated with side effects. Therefore, it is critical to find an alternative therapeutic approach to combat underarm odour. The aim of this study is to investigate the antibacterial effect of tetraspanin CD9 peptides against the skin microbiota that cause malodour in the underarms. The antimicrobial activity of CD9 peptides against Micrococcus luteus (M. luteus), Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis), Staphylococcus epidermidis (S. epidermidis), and Corynebacterium xerosis (C. xerosis) was investigated by the disc diffusion method. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) were determined by broth microdilution assays using CD9 peptide concentrations ranging from 1 mg/mL to 0.0078 mg/mL. In addition, the anti-biofilm activity of the CD9 peptides was determined. The CD9 peptides showed different antibacterial activity with an inhibition zone of 7.67, 9.67, 7.00, and 6.00 mm for S. epidermidis, M. luteus, C. xerosis, and B. subtilis, respectively. All bacteria had the same MBC value of 1 mg/mL. A high MIC of CD9 peptides was observed for S. epidermidis and M. luteus at 0.5 mg/mL. The MIC values of B. subtilis and C. xerosis were 0.125 mg/mL and 0.25 mg/mL, respectively. CD9 peptides significantly inhibited biofilm development of S. epidermidis, B. subtilis, and C. xerosis isolates. The CD9 tetraspanin peptide has excellent antibacterial activity against bacteria that cause underarm odour. Therefore, the CD9 tetraspanin peptide is a promising alternative to deodorants and antiperspirants to combat commensal bacteria of the skin that cause underarm odour. Full article

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of laboratory-scale biotrickling filters (BTFs) packed with composite filler and pine bark filler under different operating conditions in purifying mixed gas containing H2S and NH3. The composite filler was prepared with modified activated carbon and loaded with functional microbes, using the microbial immobilization technology combined with a nutrient sustained-release composite filler. The results showed that the composite filler could better adapt to low empty bed retention time (EBRT) and high inlet concentration than the pine bark filler. When EBRT was 40 s and the inlet load was 41 g/m3·h, the NH3 removal efficiency of the composite filler was kept above 80%, and when the inlet load was 61.5 g/m3·h, it could be stabilized at about 60%. When EBRT exceeds 34 s, the H2S removal efficiency of the two BTFs was maintained at 100%. Yet, when EBRT was 34 s, the H2S removal efficiency of the bark filler BTF dropped to <80%. The microbial diversity and richness of the bark filler BTF were significantly higher than those of the composite filler BTF, which had higher community similarity under each working condition. However, the proportion of predominant bacteria in the composite filler BTF was higher than that of the bark filler BTF. As the inlet load increased, the diversity of predominant bacteria of the composite filler BTF increased, which means that the predominant bacteria were less inhibited by high-concentration odorous gases. The predominant bacteria with deodorizing function in the composite filler BTF included Pseudomonas, Comamonas, and Trichococcus, which might jointly complete nitrogen’s nitrification and denitrification processes. The proportion of these three bacteria in the composite filler BTF was higher than in the bark filler BTF. Full article

Human living environments and health are seriously affected by the odor produced from fermentation of livestock and poultry manure. In order to reduce the odor pollution caused by livestock and poultry manure, efficient strains were screened and two methods were tried in this study. The orthogonal test design was used to analyze the gas produced by pig manure under different conditions of temperature, time, wheat straw doping amount and calcium carbonate doping amount. Then, according to ammonia, hydrogen sulfide and comprehensive odor removal effects, the high efficiency of deodorizing strains were screened. The results showed that pig manure produced the least odor when the temperature was 20 °C, added 0% calcium carbonate, 20% wheat straw and waited for 48 h. Three strains were screened to inhibit the odor production of pig manure: Paracoccus denitrificans, Bacillus licheniformis and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, showed that their highest removal rate of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide gas could reach 96.58% and 99.74% among them; while for three strains of end-control pig manure stench: Pichia kudriavzevii, P. denitrificans and Bacillus subtilis, the highest removal rate of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide gas reached 85.91% and 90.80% among them. This research provides bacteria resources as the high-efficiency deodorizing function for the source suppression and the end treatment of the odor gas of pig manure, which has high application value for the control of odor pollution. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are widely presented in the environment and pose a serious environmental threat due to their toxicity. Among PAHs, naphthalene is the simplest compound. Nevertheless, due to its high toxicity and presence in the waste of chemical and oil processing industries, naphthalene is one of the most critical pollutants. Similar to other PAHs, naphthalene is released into the environment via the incomplete combustion of organic compounds, pyrolysis, oil spills, oil processing, household waste disposal, and use of fumigants and deodorants. One of the main ways to detoxify such compounds in the natural environment is through their microbial degradation. For the first time, the pathway of naphthalene degradation was investigated in pseudomonades. The salicylate was found to be a key intermediate. For some time, this pathway was considered the main, if not the only one, in the bacterial destruction of naphthalene. However, later, data emerged which indicated that gram-positive bacteria in the overwhelming majority of cases are not capable of the formation/destruction of salicylate. The obtained data made it possible to reveal that protocatechoate, phthalate, and cinnamic acids are predominant intermediates in the destruction of naphthalene by rhodococci. Pathways of naphthalene degradation, the key enzymes, and genetic regulation are the main subjects of the present review, representing an attempt to summarize the current knowledge about the mechanism of the microbial degradation of PAHs. Modern molecular methods are also discussed in the context of the development of “omics” approaches, namely genomic, metabolomic, and proteomic, used as tools for studying the mechanisms of microbial biodegradation. Lastly, a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms of the formation of specific ecosystems is also provided. Full article
