Cutting beech plywood using abrasive water jet (AWJ) technology represents a significant area of research due to increasing demands for precision, quality, and environmental sustainability in manufacturing processes within the woodworking industry. AWJ technology enables non-contact cutting of materials without causing thermal deformation or mechanical damage, which is crucial for preserving the structural integrity and mechanical properties of the plywood. This article investigates cutting beech plywood using technical methods using an abrasive water jet (AWJ) at 400 MPa pressure, with Australian garnet (80 MESH) as the abrasive material. It examines how abrasive mass flow rate, traverse speed, and material thickness affect AWJ lag, which in turn influences both cutting quality and accuracy. Measurements were conducted with power abrasive mass flow rates of 250, 350, and 450 g/min and traverse speeds of 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6 m/min. Results show that increasing the abrasive mass flow rate from 250 g/min to 350 g/min slightly decreased the AWJ cut width by 0.05 mm, while further increasing to 450 g/min caused a slight increase of 0.1 mm. Changes in traverse speed significantly influenced cut width; increasing the traverse speed from 0.2 m/min to 0.4 m/min widened the AWJ by 0.21 mm, while increasing it to 0.6 m/min caused a slight increase of 0.18 mm. For practical applications, it is recommended to use an abrasive mass flow rate of around 350 g/min combined with a traverse speed between 0.2 and 0.4 m/min when cutting beech plywood with AWJ. This balance minimizes jet lag and maintains high surface quality comparable to conventional milling. For thicker plywood, reducing the traverse speed closer to 0.2 m/min and slightly increasing the abrasive flow should ensure clean cuts without compromising surface integrity. Full article

The evaporation dynamics of droplets on smooth and inclined micro-pillar surfaces were experimentally investigated. The surface temperature was increased from 50 °C to 120 °C, with the inclination angles being 0°, 30°, 45°, and 60° respectively. The dynamic parameters, including contact area, nucleation density, bubble stable diameter, and droplet asymmetry, were recorded using two high-speed video cameras, and the corresponding evaporation performance was analyzed. Experimental results showed that the inclination angle had a significant influence on the evaporation of micro-pillar surfaces than smooth surfaces as well as a positive correlation between the enhancement performance of the micro-pillars and increasing inclination angles. This angular dependence arises from surface inclination-induced tail elongation and the corresponding asymmetry of droplets. With definition of the one-dimensional asymmetry factor (ε) and volume asymmetry factor (γ), it was proven that although the asymmetric thickness of the droplets reduces the nucleation density and bubble stable diameter, the droplet asymmetry significantly increased the heat exchange area, resulting in a 37% improvement in the evaporation rate of micro-pillar surfaces and about a 15% increase in its enhancement performance to smooth surfaces when the inclination angle increased from 0°to 60°. These results indicate that asymmetry causes changes in heat transfer conditions, specifically, a significant increase in the wetted area and deformation of the liquid film, which are the direct enhancement mechanisms of inclined micro-pillar surfaces. Cell confluence and number are critical indicators for assessing cellular growth status, contributing to disease diagnosis and the development of targeted therapies. Accurate and efficient cell segmentation is essential for quantifying these indicators. However, current segmentation methodologies still encounter significant challenges in addressing multi-scale heterogeneity, poorly delineated boundaries under limited annotation, and the inherent trade-off between computational efficiency and segmentation accuracy. We propose an innovative network architecture. First, a preprocessing pipeline combining contrast-limited adaptive histogram equalization (CLAHE) and Gaussian blur is introduced to balance noise suppression and local contrast enhancement. Second, a bidirectional feature pyramid network (BiFPN) is incorporated, leveraging cross-scale feature calibration to enhance multi-scale cell recognition. Third, adaptive kernel convolution (AKConv) is developed to capture the heterogeneous spatial distribution of glioma stem cells (GSCs) through dynamic kernel deformation, improving boundary segmentation while reducing model complexity. Finally, a probability density-guided non-maximum suppression (Soft-NMS) algorithm is proposed to alleviate cell under-detection. Experimental results demonstrate that the model achieves 95.7% mAP50 (box) and 95% mAP50 (mask) on the GSCs dataset with an inference speed of 38 frames per second. Moreover, it simultaneously supports dual-modality output for cell confluence assessment and precise counting, providing a reliable automated tool for tumor microenvironment research. Full article

This study presents an integrated geospatial framework for assessing the risk to high-speed railway (HSR) infrastructure, combining a persistent scatterer interferometric synthetic aperture radar (PS-InSAR) analysis with multi-criteria decision-making in a geographic information system (GIS) environment. Focusing on the Honam HSR corridor in South Korea, the model incorporates both maximum ground deformation and subsidence velocity to construct a dynamic hazard index. Social vulnerability is quantified using five demographic and infrastructural indicators, and a two-stage analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is applied with dependency correction to mitigate inter-variable redundancy. The resulting high-resolution risk maps highlight spatial mismatches between geotechnical hazards and social exposure, revealing vulnerable segments in Gongju and Iksan that require prioritized maintenance and mitigation. The framework also addresses data limitations by interpolating groundwater levels and estimating train speed using spatial techniques. Designed to be scalable and transferable, this methodology offers a practical decision-support tool for infrastructure managers and policymakers aiming to enhance the resilience of linear transport systems. Due to the limitations of high speed and short time in plasma-spraying experiments, this study established a simulation model of Y2O3 multi-particle deposition to discuss the influence of laser loading on coating-deposition behavior and performance. According to the simulation results, the temperature of coating particles under laser loading displays a gradient distribution, with the surface having the highest temperature. The particles deposit on the substrate to form uniform pits of a certain depth. Plastic deformation causes maximum stress to occur at the edges of the pits and maximum strain to occur on the sidewall of the pits. The deposition region had both compressive and tensile stresses, and laser loading greatly reduced the tensile stresses’ magnitude while having less of an impact on the particle strains. Laser assistance promotes further melting of particles, reduces coating thickness, lowers coating porosity to 3.94%, increases hardness to 488 MPa, reduces maximum pore size from 68 µm to 32 µm, and causes particle sputtering to gradually evolve from being disc-shaped to being finger-shaped, creating cavities at the coating edges. The comparison between the surface morphology and the cross-section pores of the experimentally prepared coating verified the rationality and viability of the simulation work. Full article

A rotating imperfect ring resonator of the gyroscope is modeled by a rotating thin ring with evenly distributed point masses. The free response of the rotating ring structure at constant speed is investigated, including the steady elastic deformation and wave response. The dynamic equations are formulated by using Hamilton’s principle in the ground-fixed coordinates. The coordinate transformation is applied to facilitate the solution of the steady deformation, and the displacements and tangential tension for the deformation are calculated by the perturbation method. Employing Galerkin’s method, the governing equation of the free vibration is casted in matrix differential operator form after the separation of the real and imaginary parts with the inextensional assumption. The natural frequencies are calculated through the eigenvalue analysis, and the numerical results are obtained. The effects of the point masses on the natural frequencies of the forward and backward traveling wave curves of different orders are discussed, especially on the measurement accuracy of gyroscopes for different cases. In the ground-fixed coordinates, the frequency splitting results in a crosspoint of the natural frequencies of the forward and backward traveling waves. The finite element method is applied to demonstrate the validity and accuracy of the model. Full article

High-strength steel has high strength and low thermal conductivity, and its thin-walled parts are very susceptible to residual stress and deformation caused by cutting heat during the drilling process, which affects the machining accuracy and quality. High-strength steel thin-walled components are widely used in aerospace and other high-end sectors; however, systematic investigations into their temperature fields during drilling remain scarce, particularly regarding the evolution characteristics of the temperature field in thin-wall drilling and the quantitative relationship between drilling parameters and these temperature variations. This paper takes the thin-walled parts of AF1410 high-strength steel as the research object, designs a special fixture, and applies infrared thermography to measure the bottom surface temperature in the thin-walled drilling process in real time; this is carried out in order to study the characteristics of the temperature field during the thin-walled drilling process of high-strength steel, as well as the influence of the drilling dosage on the temperature field of the bottom surface. The experimental findings are as follows: in the process of thin-wall drilling of high-strength steel, the temperature field of the bottom surface of the workpiece shows an obvious temperature gradient distribution; before the formation of the drill cap, the highest temperature of the bottom surface of the workpiece is distributed in the central circular area corresponding to the extrusion of the transverse edge during the drilling process, and the highest temperature of the bottom surface can be approximated as the temperature of the extrusion friction zone between the top edge of the drill and the workpiece when the top edge of the drill bit drills to a position close to the bottom surface of the workpiece and increases with the increase in the drilling speed and the feed volume; during the process of drilling, the highest temperature of the bottom surface of the workpiece is approximated as the temperature of the top edge of the drill bit and the workpiece. The maximum temperature of the bottom surface of the workpiece in the drilling process increases nearly linearly with the drilling of the drill, and the slope of the maximum temperature increases nearly linearly with the increase in the drilling speed and feed, in which the influence of the feed on the slope of the maximum temperature increases is larger than that of the drilling speed. To address the unclear coupling mechanism between thermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication (TEHL) and dynamic behaviors in planetary gear systems, a novel tribo-dynamic model for dual-star planetary gears considering TEHL effects is proposed. In this model, a TEHL surrogate model is first established to determine the oil film thickness and sliding friction force along the tooth meshing line. Subsequently, the dynamic model of the dual-star planetary gear transmission system is developed through coordinate transformations of the dual-star gear train. Finally, by integrating lubrication effects into both time-varying mesh stiffness and time-varying backlash, a tribo-dynamic model for the dual-star planetary gear transmission system is established. The study reveals that the lubricant film thickness is positively correlated with relative sliding velocity but negatively correlated with unit line load. Under high-speed conditions, a thickened oil film induces premature meshing contact, leading to meshing impacts. In contrast, under high-torque conditions, tooth deformation dominates meshing force fluctuations while lubrication influence diminishes. By establishing a test bench for the planetary gear transmission system, the obtained simulation conclusions are verified. This research provides theoretical and experimental support for the design of high-reliability planetary gear systems. Full article

Ensuring the structural safety of steel trusses in escalators is critical for the reliable operation of vertical transportation systems. While manual inspection remains widely used, its dependence on human judgment leads to extended cycle times and variable defect-recognition rates, making it less reliable for identifying subtle surface imperfections. To address these limitations, a novel context-aware, multi-scale deep learning framework based on the YOLOv5 architecture is proposed, which is specifically designed for automated structural defect detection in escalator steel trusses. Firstly, a method called GIES is proposed to synthesize pseudo-multi-channel representations from single-channel grayscale images, which enhances the network’s channel-wise representation and mitigates issues arising from image noise and defocused blur. To further improve detection performance, a context enhancement pipeline is developed, consisting of a local feature module (LFM) for capturing fine-grained surface details and a global context module (GCM) for modeling large-scale structural deformations. In addition, a multi-scale feature fusion module (MSFM) is employed to effectively integrate spatial features across various resolutions, enabling the detection of defects with diverse sizes and complexities. Comprehensive testing on the NEU-DET and GC10-DET datasets reveals that the proposed method achieves 79.8% mAP on NEU-DET and 68.1% mAP on GC10-DET, outperforming the baseline YOLOv5s by 8.0% and 2.7%, respectively. Although challenges remain in identifying extremely fine defects such as crazing, the proposed approach offers improved accuracy while maintaining real-time inference speed. These results indicate the potential of the method for intelligent visual inspection in structural health monitoring and industrial safety applications. Full article

The pull-back method for determining dynamic tensile strength assumes one-dimensional stress wave propagation and material homogeneity. This study validates these assumptions for unidirectional reinforced concrete (UDRC) through experiments and numerical simulations. Split Hopkinson pressure bar tests were conducted on plain concrete, plain UDRC, and deformed UDRC specimens containing a central 6 mm steel bar. Ultra-high-speed digital image correlation at 500,000 fps enabled precise local strain rate measurements (3 s−1 to 55 s−1) at fracture locations. Finite element simulations revealed that while reinforcement induces localized multi-axial stresses near the steel–concrete interface, the bulk concrete maintains predominantly uniaxial stress conditions. Experimental results showed less than 1% variation in pull-back velocity between specimen types. Statistical analysis confirmed a unified strain rate-strength relationship: σspall=4.1+4.7log10(ε˙)MPa, independent of reinforcement configuration (ANCOVA: p=0.2182 for interaction term). The dynamic tensile strength is governed by concrete matrix properties rather than reinforcement type. These findings are the first to experimentally and numerically validate the pull-back method’s applicability to UDRC systems, establishing that dynamic tensile failure is matrix-dominated and enabling simplified one-dimensional analysis for reinforced concrete under impact. The large-scale utilization of hydrogen energy is currently hindered by challenges in low-cost production, storage, and transportation. This study focused on investigating the impact of the diaphragm cavity profile on the movement behavior and stress distribution of a dual-stage diaphragm compressor. Firstly, an experimental platform was established to test the gas mass flowrate and fluid pressures under various preset conditions. Secondly, a simulation path integrating the finite element method simulation, theoretical stress model, and movement model was developed and experimentally validated to analyze the diaphragm stress distribution and deformation characteristics. Finally, comparative optimization analyses were conducted on different types of diaphragm cavity profiles. The results indicated that the driving pressure differences at the top dead center position reached 85.58 kPa for the first-stage diaphragm and 75.49 kPa for the second-stage diaphragm. Under experimental conditions of 1.6 MPa suction pressure, 8 MPa second-stage discharge pressure, and 200 rpm rotational speed, the first-stage and second-stage diaphragms reached the maximum center deflections of 4.14 mm and 2.53 mm, respectively, at the bottom dead center position. Moreover, the cavity profile optimization analysis indicated that the double-arc profile (DAP) achieved better cavity volume and diaphragm stress characteristics. The first-stage diaphragm within the optimized DAP-type cavity exhibited 173.95 MPa maximum principal stress with a swept volume of 0.001129 m3, whereas the second-stage optimized configuration reached 172.57 MPa stress with a swept volume of 0.0003835 m3. This research offers valuable insights for enhancing the reliability and performance of diaphragm compressors. Full article

Accurate path tracking is crucial for greenhouse robots operating in complex environments. However, traditional curve tracking algorithms suffer from low tracking accuracy and large tracking errors. This study aim to develop a high precision greenhouse autonomous following robot, use ANSYS Workbench 19.2 to perform stress and deformation analysis on the robot, then propose a path tracking method based on Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) to optimize the pure tracking to ensure high precision curved path tracking for curved tracking, finally perform a comparative simulation analysis in MATLAB R2024a. The structural analysis shows that the maximum equivalent stress is 196 MPa and the maximum deformation is 1.73 mm under a load of 600 kg, which are within the yield limit of 45 steel. Simulation results demonstrate that at a speed of 2 m/s, the conventional Pure Pursuit algorithm incurs a maximum lateral error of 0.3418 m and a heading error of 0.2669 rad under high curvature conditions. By contrast, the LQR–Pure Pursuit algorithm reduces the peak lateral error to 0.0904 m and confines the heading error to approximately 0.0217 rad. Experimental validation yielded an RMSE of 0.018 m for lateral error and 0.016 m for heading error. These findings confirm that the designed robot can sustain its payload under most operating scenarios and that the proposed tracking strategy effectively suppresses deviations and improves path-following accuracy. This work presents a novel type of soft reconfigurable mobile robot with multimodal locomotion, which is created using a controllable magneto-elastica-reinforced composite elastomer. The rope motor-driven method is employed to modulate magnetics–mechanics coupling effects and enable the magneto-elastica-reinforced elastomer actuator to produce controllable deformations. Furthermore, the 3D-printed magneto-elastica-reinforced elastomer actuators are assembled into several typical robotic patterns: linear configuration, parallel configuration, and triangular configuration. As a proof of concept, a few of the basic locomotive modes are demonstrated including squirming-type crawling at a speed of 1.11 mm/s, crawling with turning functions at a speed of 1.11 mm/s, and omnidirectional crawling at a speed of 1.25 mm/s. Notably, the embedded magnetic balls produce magnetic adhesion on the ferromagnetic surfaces, which enables the soft mobile robot to climb upside-down on ferromagnetic curved surfaces. In the experiment, the inverted ceiling-based inverted crawling speed is 2.17 mm/s, and the inverted freeform surface-based inverted crawling speed is 3.40 mm/s. As indicated by the experimental results, the proposed robot has the advantages of a simple structure, low cost, reconfigurable multimodal motion ability, and so on, and has potential application in the inspection of high-value assets and operations in confined environments. Mitigating excessive stress, a primary cause of structural failure, deformation, and premature fatigue, is critical in engineering design. Evolutionary (BESO) and proportional topology optimization (PTO) are standard heuristic approaches, yet their relative computational efficiency and accuracy for stress problems are not well understood. Addressing this gap, this paper conducts the first comprehensive comparisons of BESO and PTO for the stress minimization problem, also investigating the impact of the p-norm. Optimization results reveal PTO’s significant advantage in computational speed. BESO sometimes produces designs with lower maximum stresses, though with higher structural compliance. Full article

Wind Tunnel Experimental Study on Dynamic Coupling Characteristics of Flexible Refueling Hose–Drogue System

During the process of flexible aerial refueling, the flexible structure of the hose drogue assembly is affected by internal and external interference, such as docking maneuvering, deformation of the hose, attitude changes, and body vibrations, causing the hose to swing and the whipping phenomenon, which greatly limits the success rate and safety of aerial refueling operations. Based on a 2.4 m transonic wind tunnel, high-speed wind tunnel test technology of a flexible aerial refueling hose–drogue system was established to carry out experimental research on the coupling characteristics of aerodynamics and multi-body dynamics. Based on the aid of Videogrammetry Model Deformation (VMD), high-speed photography, dynamic balance, and other wind tunnel test technologies, the dynamic characteristics of the hose–drogue system in a high-speed airflow and during the approach of the receiver are obtained. Adopting flexible multi-body dynamics, a dynamic system of the tanker, hose, drogue, and receiver is modeled. The cable/beam model is based on an arbitrary Lagrange–Euler method, and the absolute node coordinate method is used to describe the deformation, movement, and length variation in the hose during both winding and unwinding. The aerodynamic forces of the tanker, receiver, hose, and drogue are modeled, reflecting the coupling influence of movement of the tanker and receiver, the deformation of the hose and drogue, and the aerodynamic forces on each other. The tests show that during the approach of the receiver (distance from 1000 mm to 20 mm), the sinking amount of the drogue increases by 31 mm; due to the offset of the receiver probe, the drogue moves sideways from the symmetric plane of the receiver. Meanwhile, the oscillation magnitude of the drogue increases (from 33 to 48 and from 48 to 80 in spanwise and longitudinal directions, respectively). The simulation results show that the shear force induced by the oscillation of the hose and the propagation velocity of both the longitudinal and shear waves are affected by the hose stiffness and Mach number. The results presented in this work can be of great reference to further increase the safety of aerial refueling. Full article
