Hydration, Soundness, and Strength of Low Carbon LC3 Mortar Using Waste Brick Powder as a Source of Calcined Clay

The construction industry is responsible for 39% of global CO2 emissions related to energy use, with cement responsible for 5–8% of it. Limestone calcined clay cement (LC3), a ternary blended binder system, offers a low-carbon alternative by partially substituting clinker with calcined clay and limestone. This study investigated the use of waste clay brick powder (WBP), a waste material, as a source of calcined clay in LC3 formulations, addressing both environmental concerns and SCM scarcity. Two LC3 mixtures containing 15% limestone, 5% gypsum, and either 15% or 30% WBP, corresponding to clinker contents of 65% (LC3-65) or 50% (LC3-50), were evaluated against general purpose (GP) cement mortar. Tests included setting time, flowability, soundness, compressive and flexural strengths, drying shrinkage, isothermal calorimetry, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Isothermal calorimetry showed peak heat flow reductions of 26% and 49% for LC3-65 and LC3-50, respectively, indicating a slower reactivity of LC3. The initial and final setting times of the LC3 mixtures were 10–30 min and 30–60 min longer, respectively, due to the slower hydration kinetics caused by the reduced clinker content. Flowability increased in LC3-50, which is attributed to the lower clinker content and higher water availability. At 7 days, LC3-65 retained 98% of the control’s compressive strength, while LC3-50 showed a 47% reduction. At 28 days, the compressive strengths of mixtures LC3-65 and LC3-50 were 7% and 46% lower than the control, with flexural strength reductions being 8% and 40%, respectively. The porosity calculated from the SEM images was found to be 7%, 11%, and 15% in the control, LC3-65, and LC3-50, respectively. Thus, the reduction in strength is attributed to the slower reaction rate and increased porosity associated with the reduced clinker content in LC3 mixtures. However, the results indicate that the performance of LC3-65 was close to that of the control mix, supporting the viability of WBP as a low-carbon partial replacement of clinker in LC3. Full article

In the context of the global response to climate change and the active promotion of energy transformation, a number of low-carbon policies coupled with the development of synergies to help power system transformation is an important initiative. However, the insufficient articulation of the green power market, tradable green certificate (TGC) market, and carbon emission trading (CET) mechanism, and the ambiguous policy boundaries affect the trading decisions made by its market participants. Therefore, this paper systematically analyses the composition of the main players in the electricity-CET-TGC markets and their relationship with each other, and designs the synergistic mechanism of the electricity-CET-TGC markets, based on which, it constructs the optimal profit model of the thermal power plant operators, renewable energy manufacturers, power grid enterprises, power users and load aggregators under the electricity-CET-TGC markets synergy, and analyses the behavioural decision-making of the main players in the electricity-CET-TGC markets as well as the electric power system to optimise the trading strategy of each player. The results of the study show that: (1) The synergistic mechanism of electricity-CET-TGC markets can increase the proportion of green power grid-connected in the new type of power system. (2) In the selection of different environmental rights and benefits products, the direct participation of green power in the market-oriented trading is the main way, followed by applying for conversion of green power into China certified emission reduction (CCER). (3) The development of independent energy storage technology can produce greater economic and environmental benefits. This study provides policy support to promote the synergistic development of the electricity-CET-TGC markets and assist the low-carbon transformation of the power industry. Full article

Nowadays, the circular economy is driving the construction industry towards greater sustainability for both environmental and financial purposes. One prominent area of research with significant contributions to circular economy is the reuse of steel from decommissioned structures in new construction projects. This approach is deemed far more efficient than ordinary steel recycling, due to the fact that it contributes towards reducing both the cost of the new project and the associated carbon emissions. Along these lines, the feasibility of utilizing steel wind turbine towers (WTTs) as part of a new structure is investigated herein, considering that wind turbines are decommissioned after a nominal life of approximately 25 years due to fatigue limitations. General principles of structural steel reuse are first presented in a systematic manner, followed by two case studies. Realistic data about the geometry and cross-sections of previous generation models of WTTs were obtained from the Greek Center for Renewable Energy Sources and Savings (CRES), including drawings and photographic material from their demonstrative wind farm in the area of Keratea. A specific wind turbine was selected that is about to exceed its life expectancy and will soon be decommissioned. Two alternative applications for the reuse of the tower were proposed and analyzed, with emphasis on the structural aspects. One deals with the use of parts of the tower as a small-span pedestrian bridge, while the second addresses the transformation of a tower section into a water storage tank. Several decision factors have contributed to the selection of these two reuse scenarios, including, amongst others, the geometric compatibility of the decommissioned wind turbine tower with the proposed applications, engineering intuition about the tower having adequate strength for its new role, the potential to minimize fatigue loads in the reused state, the minimization of cutting and joining processes as much as possible to restrain further CO2 emissions, reduction in waste material, the societal contribution of the potential reuse applications, etc. The two examples are briefly presented, aiming to demonstrate the concept and feasibility at the preliminary design level, highlighting the potential of decommissioned WTTs to find proper use for their future life. To reduce carbon emissions in the shipping industry, the energy management problem of the ship-integrated energy system (S-IES) is analyzed in this paper. Firstly, a marine environmental risk field model is constructed to quantify the degree of hazard when designing the sailing route. Meanwhile, an energy management model that considers both economic and environmental benefits is developed to enhance the penetration rate of renewable resources. Subsequently, a distributed energy management algorithm based on finite-time consensus theory is proposed to ensure a rapid and accurate response to load demand. Moreover, a mathematical analysis is provided to demonstrate the algorithm’s effectiveness. Finally, the sea area between Singapore Port (Singapore) and Penang Port (Malaysia) is chosen as the simulation environment. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of energy management for the S-IES. Full article

Accomplishing China’s national targets of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality necessitates proactive solutions, hinging critically on fundamentally transforming rural construction models. Current construction practices in rural areas are characterized by inefficiency, high resource consumption, and reliance on imported materials. These shortcomings not only jeopardize the attainment of climate objectives, but also hinder equitable development between urban and rural regions. Using the Digital Industrial Park in Yongtai County, Fuzhou City, as a case study, this study focuses on prefabricated public buildings in regions with extreme hot–humid climate, and innovatively integrates BIM (Building Information Modeling)-driven carbon modeling with the Gaussian Two-Step Floating Catchment Area (G2SFCA) method for spatial accessibility assessment to investigate the carbon emissions and economic benefits of prefabricated buildings during the embodied stage, and analyzes the spatial accessibility of prefabricated building material suppliers in Fuzhou City and identifies associated bottlenecks, seeking pathways to promote sustainable rural revitalization. Compared with traditional cast-in-situ buildings, embodied carbon emissions of prefabricated during their materialization phase significantly reduced. This dual-perspective approach ensures that the proposed solutions possess both technical rigor and logistical feasibility. Promoting this model across rural areas sharing similar climatic conditions would advance the construction industry’s progress towards the dual carbon goals. Full article

Beyond Construction Waste Management: A Systematic Review of Strategies for the Avoidance and Minimisation of Construction and Demolition Waste in Australia

The construction sector is responsible for over 40% of waste generated in Australia. Construction materials are responsible for around 11% of global carbon dioxide emissions, and a third of these materials can end up wasted on a construction site. Attention in research and industry has been directed towards waste management and recycling, resulting in 78% of construction and demolition waste being diverted from landfill. However, the waste hierarchy emphasises avoiding the generation of waste in the first place. In this paper, the PRISMA approach is used to conduct a systematic review with the objective of identifying waste reduction strategies employed across all stages of projects in the Australian construction industry. Scopus and Web of Science databases were used. The search returned 523 publications which were screened and reviewed; this resulted in 24 relevant publications from 1998 to 2025. Qualitative analysis identifies strategies categorised into five groupings: pre-demolition, design, culture, materials and procurement, and on-site activities. The review finds a distinct focus on strategies within the materials and procurement category. The reviewed literature includes fewer strategies for the avoidance of waste than for any of the other levels of the waste hierarchy, evidencing the need for further focus in this area. Full article

The global cement industry remains a significant contributor to carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, prompting substantial research efforts toward sustainable construction materials. Lithium slag (LS), a by-product of lithium extraction, has attracted attention as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM). This review synthesizes experimental findings on LS replacement levels, fresh-state behavior, mechanical performance (compressive, tensile, and flexural strengths), time-dependent deformation (shrinkage and creep), and durability (sulfate, acid, abrasion, and thermal) of LS-modified concretes. Statistical analysis identifies an optimal LS dosage of 20–30% (average 24%) for maximizing compressive strength and long-term durability, with 40% as a practical upper limit for tensile and flexural performance. Fresh-state tests show that workability losses at high LS content can be mitigated via superplasticizers. Drying shrinkage and creep strains decrease in a dose-dependent manner with up to 30% LS. High-volume (40%) LS blends achieve up to an 18% gain in 180-day compressive strength and >30% reduction in permeability metrics. Under elevated temperatures, 20% LS mixes retain up to 50% more residual strength than controls. In advanced systems—autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC), one-part geopolymers, and recycled aggregate composites—LS further enhances both microstructural densification and durability. In particular, LS emerges as a versatile SCM that optimizes mechanical and durability performance, supports material circularity, and reduces the carbon footprint. Full article

Under the construction background of carbon peak and carbon neutrality, high-energy-consuming enterprises, represented by the electrolytic aluminum industry, have become important carriers for energy conservation and emission reduction. These enterprises are characterized by significant energy consumption and high carbon emissions, greatly impacting the economic and environmental benefits of regional power grids. Existing research often focuses on grid revenue, leaving high-energy-consuming enterprises in a passive regulatory position. To address this, this paper constructs an economic dispatch strategy for power grids that considers waste heat utilization in high-energy-consuming enterprises. A typical representative, electrolytic aluminum load and its waste heat utilization model, for the entire production process of high-energy-consuming loads, is established. Using a tiered carbon trading calculation formula, a low-carbon production scheme for high-energy-consuming enterprises is developed. On the grid side, considering local load levels, the uncertainty of wind power output, and the energy demands of aluminum production, a robust day-ahead economic dispatch model is established. Case analysis based on the modified IEEE-30 node system demonstrates that the proposed method balances economic efficiency and low-carbon performance while reducing the conservatism of traditional optimization approaches. To support carbon peaking and neutrality goals in the city transportation sector, this paper accounts for CO2 emissions from the transport sector in Xuzhou City, North Jiangsu Province, from 1995 to 2023. This study explores the relationship between transport-related carbon emissions and economic growth, using the TAPIO decoupling index. Meanwhile, a carbon emission prediction model based on the STIRPAT framework is constructed, with scenario analysis applied to forecast future emissions. Results show three decoupling stages: the first, dominated by weak and expansive negative decoupling, reflects extensive economic growth; the second features weak decoupling with expansive coupling, indicating a more environmentally coordinated phase; the third transitions from expansive negative decoupling and weak decoupling to strong decoupling and expansive coupling, suggesting a shift in development patterns. Under the baseline, low-carbon, and enhanced low-carbon scenarios, by 2030, the CO2 emissions of the transportation industry in Xuzhou will be 10,154,700 tons, 9,072,500 tons, and 8,835,000 tons, respectively, and the CO2 emissions under the low-carbon scenario and the enhanced low-carbon scenario will be reduced by 10.66% and 13.00%, respectively. Based on these findings, the study proposes carbon reduction strategies for Xuzhou’s transport sector, focusing on policy regulation, energy use, and structural adjustments. Full article

In the context of growing global climate change awareness and intensifying environmental degradation, technological innovation in renewable energy has become a key realization method for sustainable development. This paper uses data samples from 30 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions in China (excluding Tibet, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan due to data availability) from 2007–2022, constructs an SFA model to measure carbon emission efficiency, and innovatively investigates the U-shaped impact of technological innovation in renewable energy on carbon emission efficiency along with the moderating effects of informatization level and fiscal decentralization. The empirical findings reveal the following: (1) Technological innovation in renewable energy demonstrates a U-shaped impact on carbon emission efficiency, with a negative impact before inflection point 2.596605 and a positive impact after the inflection point. (2) The informatization level plays a positive regulating role in the impact of technological innovation in renewable energy toward carbon emission efficiency, while fiscal decentralization exerts a negative regulating effect. (3) The impact of technological innovation in renewable energy concerning carbon emission efficiency varies depending on regional differences, industrial structure levels, and technological innovation levels in renewable energy. The conclusions of this paper are helpful for promoting the development of technological innovation in renewable energy, improving carbon emission efficiency, and advancing sustainable socio-economic development. In the context of the growing need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to develop sustainable solutions for the construction industry, foamed geopolymers represent a promising alternative to traditional binders and insulation materials. This study investigates the thermal properties of novel low-emission, insulating geopolymer binders made from fly ash with diatomite, chalcedonite, and wood wool aiming to assess their potential for use in thermal insulation systems in energy-efficient buildings. The stability of the foamed geopolymer structure is also assessed. Measurements of thermal conductivity, specific heat, microstructure, density, and compressive strength are presented. The findings indicate that the selected geopolymer formulations exhibit low thermal conductivity, high heat capacity and low density, making them competitive with conventional insulation materials—mainly load-bearing ones such as aerated concrete and wood wool insulation boards. Additionally, incorporating waste-derived materials reduces the production carbon footprint. The best results are represented by the composite incorporating all three additives (diatomite, chalcedonite, and wood wool), which achieved the lowest thermal conductivity (0.10154 W/m·K), relatively low density (415 kg/m3), and high specific heat (1.529 kJ/kg·K). The accelerating growth of the digital economy (DE) offers fresh momentum towards reaching carbon emissions’ peak and neutrality. Nevertheless, the impact mechanism of the DE on carbon emissions intensity (CEI) is insufficiently characterized. Our study first constructs an expanded comprehensive indicator system to evaluate DE development level from five dimensions containing 17 indicators. Panel data from 30 Chinese provincial regions (2013–2023) were analyzed using fixed effects, mediating effects, and spatial Durbin models to empirically examine the relationship and mechanisms between DE and CEI. Considering the existence of indirect effects of DE on CEs, the mechanism associated with the effect of the DE on CEs from the perspectives of economic growth, industrial structure upgrading, and scientific and technology innovation has been explored. The findings indicate notable regional disparities in the DE level across various provincial regions of China. China’s DE development significantly inhibits CEI. Furthermore, the DE’s development has successfully curtailed CE growth via three mediating mechanisms. And the DE exhibits a critical spatial spillover effect on CEI, and that effect also exhibits regional heterogeneity. Our findings can aid in regional DE development and the creation of policies to reduce CEs. Full article

As the construction industry continues to evolve, energy consumption of buildings, particularly CO2 emissions, has become a critical focus for sustainable development. The need for effective design decisions regarding the selection of materials throughout the project life cycle is apparent, yet the link between specifications and CO2 emissions has not been set yet. This study presents a comprehensive life cycle assessment (LCA) of CO2 emissions across various Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) categories, aiming to identify the carbon footprint of different building systems and materials. The methodology focuses on using 3D building model case studies to evaluate the design decisions versus their impact on global warming potential (GWP). The results of this study emphasize that within CSI categories, concrete divisions consistently emerge as the predominant contributors to GWP, exceeding 75% in several instances. Following closely, metals contribute approximately 50% in multiple projects. The study also explores sustainable design options across CSI divisions to provide insights into building components contributing most to a building’s overall carbon footprint. As an energy-intensive industry, the aviation sector’s carbon emissions have drawn significant attention. Against the backdrop of the “dual carbon” goals, how to enhance the carbon emission efficiency of airlines has become an urgent issue to be addressed for both industry development and low-carbon targets. This paper constructs an evaluation system for the carbon emission efficiency of airlines and uses the SBM-DDF model under the global production possibility set, combined with the bootstrap-DEA method, to calculate the efficiency values. On this basis, the fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis method is employed to analyze the synergistic effects of multiple influencing factors in three dimensions: economic benefits, transportation benefits, and energy consumption on improving carbon emission efficiency. The research findings reveal that, first, a single influencing factor does not constitute a necessary condition for achieving high carbon emission efficiency; second, there are four combinations that enhance carbon emission efficiency: “load volume-driven type”, “scale revenue-driven type”, “high ticket price + technology-driven type”, and “passenger and cargo synergy mixed type”. These discoveries are of great significance for promoting the construction of a carbon emission efficiency system by Chinese airlines and achieving high-quality development in the aviation industry. Recycled Glass and Plastic Waste in Sustainable Geopolymer Systems for Affordable Housing Solutions

The increasing demand for sustainable construction materials has driven research into low-carbon geopolymers that mitigate both cement-related emissions and plastic and glass waste accumulation. This study explores the development of geopolymer concrete incorporating fly ash (FA), slag (S), and FA + S blends, with 10% recycled crushed glass (RCG) and recycled plastic waste (RPW) as partial coarse aggregate replacements. Compressive strength testing revealed that FA + S-based geopolymers (25FA + S) with 100% ordinary Portland cement (OPC) replacement achieved a 7-day strength of 24.6 MPa, representing a 98% improvement over control specimens. Slag-based geopolymers demonstrated water absorption properties comparable to OPC, indicating enhanced durability. Microstructural analyses using SEM, XRD, and EDS confirmed the formation of a dense aluminosilicate matrix, with slag promoting FA reactivity and reinforcing interfacial transition zone (ITZ). These effects contributed to superior mechanical performance and water resistance. Despite minor shrinkage-induced cracking, full OPC replacement with S or FA + S geopolymers outperformed control specimens, consistently exceeding the target strength of 15 MPa required for low-impact, single-story housing applications within seven days. These findings underscore the potential of geopolymer systems for rapid and sustainable construction, offering an effective solution for reducing carbon footprints and repurposing industrial waste.
