First Experimental Measurements of Biophotons from Astrocytes and Glioblastoma Cell Cultures

Biophotons are non-thermal and non-bioluminescent ultraweak photon emissions, first hypothesised by Gurwitsch as a regulatory mechanism in cell division, and then experimentally observed in living organisms. Today, two main hypotheses explain their origin: stochastic decay of excited molecules and coherent electromagnetic fields produced in biochemical processes. Recent interest focuses on the role of biophotons in cellular communication and disease monitoring. This study presents the first campaign of biophoton emission measurements from cultured astrocytes and glioblastoma cells, conducted at Fondazione Pisana per la Scienza (FPS) using two ultra-sensitive setups developed in collaboration between the National Laboratories of Frascati (LNF-INFN) and the University of Rome II Tor Vergata. The statistical analyses of the collected data revealed a clear separation between cellular signals and dark noise, confirming the high sensitivity of the apparatus. The Diffusion Entropy Analysis (DEA) was applied to the data to uncover dynamic patterns, revealing anomalous diffusion and long-range memory effects that may be related to intercellular signaling and cellular communication. These findings support the hypothesis that biophoton emissions encode rich information beyond intensity, reflecting metabolic and pathological states. The differences revealed by applying the Diffusion Entropy Analysis to the biophotonic signals of Astrocytes and Glioblastoma are highlighted and discussed in the paper. This work lays the groundwork for future studies on neuronal cultures and proposes biophoton dynamics as a promising tool for non-invasive diagnostics and the study of cellular communication. Automata and artificial intelligence (AI) have long occupied a central place in cultural and artistic imagination, and the recent proliferation of AI-generated artworks has intensified debates about authorship, creativity, and human agency. Empirical studies show that audiences often perceive AI-generated works as less authentic or emotionally resonant than human creations, with authorship attribution strongly shaping esthetic judgments. Yet little attention has been paid to how AI systems themselves evaluate creative authorship. This study investigates how large language models (LLMs) evaluate literary quality under different framings of authorship—Human, AI, or Human+AI collaboration. Using a questionnaire-based experimental design, we prompted four instruction-tuned LLMs (ChatGPT 4, Gemini 2, Gemma 3, and LLaMA 3) to read and assess three short stories in Italian, originally generated by ChatGPT 4 in the narrative style of Roald Dahl. For each story × authorship condition × model combination, we collected 100 questionnaire completions, yielding 3600 responses in total. Across esthetic, literary, and inclusiveness dimensions, the stated authorship systematically conditioned model judgments: identical stories were consistently rated more favorably when framed as human-authored or human–AI co-authored than when labeled as AI-authored, revealing a robust negative bias toward AI authorship. Model-specific analyses further indicate distinctive evaluative profiles and inclusiveness thresholds across proprietary and open-source systems. Our findings extend research on attribution bias into the computational realm, showing that LLM-based evaluations reproduce human-like assumptions about creative agency and literary value. We publicly release all materials to facilitate transparency and future comparative work on AI-mediated literary evaluation. Full article

The present conceptual paper proposes a purpose-driven experiential marketing framework for film-induced destinations, integrating sustainability and emotional engagement into destination management. The model under discussion comprises five interconnected dimensions, namely integrated experience, branding, people, emotional touchpoints and processes. These are articulated through purpose-driven marketing principles and aligned with selected Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) indicators. This approach positions sustainability as an inherent component of value creation rather than an external policy layer. The framework under discussion was developed through an interdisciplinary literature review and is illustrated through insights from an exploratory case study of Monsanto, a rural Portuguese village recently featured in HBO’s House of the Dragon. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with a purposive sample of local stakeholders, including tourists, residents, entrepreneurs and institutional representatives. These interviews were analysed thematically to provide indicative evidence of the framework’s relevance and potential applicability. The findings suggest that emotional engagement, co-creation and territorial authenticity play a central role in shaping memorable film-related tourism experiences that are consistent with destination purpose and stakeholder well-being. The study also emphasises the strategic importance of storytelling, audiovisual narratives and collaborative governance in the strengthening of place identity and the support of sustainable differentiation. Despite its exploratory nature, the framework provides practical guidance for destination management organisations (DMOs), cultural programmers and creative industry actors. The article concludes by identifying avenues for future research, including cross-regional application, digital experimentation and the quantitative assessment of experiential dimensions. Since the 19th century, Protestant missionaries in Guangdong have extensively engaged in the translation and publication of religious texts, employing localized strategies in the illustration of Christian novels. Within the local cultural context of late Qing Guangdong, missionaries collaborated with local scholars, used Cantonese for writing, and designed novel illustrations to overcome barriers in doctrinal dissemination, thereby facilitating the spread of Christianity. The illustrations in missionary-published novels, such as The Pilgrim’s Progress in Vernacular and The Spiritual Warfare in Vernacular, adopted the stylistic features of Ming and Qing novel woodcuts in terms of lines, composition, character attire, and settings. Furthermore, they skillfully incorporated the Confucian moral framework of loyalty, filial piety, chastity, and righteousness, as represented in the Sacred Edict, into their narrative ethics, while integrating elements such as Buddhist causality and Daoist imagery into a “didactic” system. This localization strategy, combined with a “trinity” reading guidance model comprising images, text, and biblical annotations, visually elucidated the tenets of the Bible and encouraged the public to embrace Christianity. The localized practice of missionary novel illustrations served as a conscious and effective visual strategy aimed at bridging cultural divides and promoting the dissemination of the Gospel. It profoundly reflects the visual agency in modern Sino–Western cultural exchanges and significantly advanced the propagation of Christianity. Full article

The success of STEM education in early childhood education is reliant on the pedagogical practices of teachers. Effective teaching of STEM requires specific knowledge of the four disciplines of STEM, appropriate teaching and learning methods and relevant experiences. In Saudi Arabia the teaching of STEM is a relatively new field, and this paper outlines a research project to promote the teaching and learning of STEM through professional development workshops. The research is informed by Vygotsky’s cultural-historical/socio-cultural theory, acknowledging the crucial role of social interaction and cultural context in a collaborative learning environment. To evaluate the project, a mixed methods approach was used involving the collecting, analyzing, and interpreting of quantitative and qualitative data. Surveys were conducted before and after professional development as well as semi-structured interviews. The findings indicate positive shifts in attitudes and enthusiasm among early childhood educators to teach STEM following the professional development program. However, the practical implementation remains a challenge due to the perceived lack of suitable resources, support from school leadership and the need for ongoing coaching and mentoring. Full article

The Erasmus+ YOU4BLUE project represents an interdisciplinary educational initiative aimed at fostering a youth culture of sustainability through hands-on learning, scientific literacy, and critical thinking focused on the marine environment. The project aimed to encourage lasting behavioural change and empower young people to act. It engaged secondary school students aged 14 to 18 on three Mediterranean islands (Sardinia, Crete, and Mallorca) through a blended Place-Based Education (PBE) model that integrates online learning with local, experiential activities. Forty-nine students completed a pre-assessment questionnaire measuring baseline marine ecosystem knowledge, sustainability-related behaviours, and attitudes toward the sea. Following three international exchanges involving the learning activities, roughly the same cohort of students completed post-activity surveys assessing self-perceived knowledge gains and intercultural interaction. Qualitative data from emotional mapping, field observations, and group reflections complemented the quantitative analysis. The results indicate substantial self-perceived increases in students’ understanding of marine ecosystems (+1.0 to +1.7 points on a 5-point scale), enhanced collaboration with international peers, and strengthened environmental awareness. Across all three sites, students applied their learning by co-designing proposals addressing local coastal challenges, demonstrating emerging civic responsibility and the ability to integrate scientific observations into real-world problem solving. These findings suggest that combining place-based education, citizen science, and participatory methods can effectively support the development of sustainability competences among youth in coastal contexts. This study contributes empirical evidence to the growing literature on education for sustainable development and highlights the value of blended, experiential, and intercultural approaches in promoting environmentally responsible behaviour. Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDSs) are essential for stormwater management in urban areas, with varying hydrological, social, ecological, and economic benefits. Nevertheless, choosing the SUDS most appropriate for public spaces poses a challenge when balancing details/specifications against community decisions, primarily social implications and perceptions. Building on the SUDS design pillar of the amenity, this study outlines a three-phase methodological framework for selecting SUDS based on social facilitation. The first phase introduces the application of the Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) and Classificatory Expectation–Maximization (CEM) techniques by modeling complex social interdependencies to find critical components related to urban planning. A Likert scale survey was also conducted with 440 urban dwellers in Tunja (Colombia), which identified three dimensions: Residential Satisfaction (RS), Resilience and Adaptation to Climate Change (RACC), and Community Participation (CP). In the second phase, the factors identified above were transformed into eight operational criteria, which were weighted using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) with the collaboration of 35 international experts in SUDS planning and implementation. In the third phase, these weighted criteria were used to evaluate and classify 13 types of SUDSs based on the experts’ assessments of their sub-criteria. The results deliver a clear message: cities must concentrate on solutions that will guarantee that water is managed to the best of their ability, not just safely, and that also enhance climate resilience, energy efficiency, and the ways in which public space is used. Among those options considered, infiltration ponds, green roofs, rain gardens, wetlands, and the like were the best-performing options, providing real and concrete uses in promoting a more resilient and sustainable urban water system. The methodology was also used in a real case in Tunja, Colombia. In its results, this approach proved not only pragmatic but also useful for all concerned, showing that the socio-cultural dimensions can be truly integrated into planning SUDSs and ensuring success. Urban resilience has emerged as a critical paradigm for addressing the intertwined challenges of climate change, rapid urbanization, and social inequality, positioning green public spaces as catalysts for social, ecological, and institutional transformation. This article presents a systematic review conducted under the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, examining how collaborative and community participation influenced transformative urban resilience in green public spaces between 2021 and 2025. A total of 6179 records were initially identified across ScienceDirect and MDPI (last search: July 2025), of which 26 empirical studies met the inclusion criteria (peer-reviewed, empirical, published 2021–2025). Methodological rigor was strengthened through the application of the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT, 2018) and confidence in qualitative evidence was assessed using the GRADE-CERQual approach, enhancing transparency and reliability. Data extraction and synthesis followed a theoretical-methodological coding framework, allowing for the comparison of participatory strategies, typologies of green spaces, resilience dimensions, and applied instruments. The results show that multi-actor co-management, co-design, and community self-organization are the most frequent participatory strategies, while urban green infrastructure, pocket parks, and urban gardens constitute the predominant spatial contexts. Socio-ecological and social-participatory resilience emerged as dominant theoretical perspectives, with qualitative and mixed-methods designs prevailing across studies. Evidence synthesis through GRADE-CERQual identified seven key pathways—multi-actor co-management, Nature-based Solutions, community-based actions, social equity, cultural identity, institutional innovation, and planned densification—each contributing differently to resilience dimensions. Overall, the findings highlight that transformative resilience depends on deep, inclusive participatory processes, multi-level governance, and the integration of social, ecological, and cultural dimensions. Despite the heterogeneity of designs and unequal data adequacy, this review confirms that transformative urban resilience is a co-produced process grounded in community action, ecological sustainability, and collaborative governance. Strengthening underexplored areas—technological innovation, cultural resilience, and standardized methodological instruments—is essential for advancing comparative research and practice. Full article

This research aims to analyze strategic risks from financial digitalization, highlighting the disruptive role of Fintech firms and Neobanks, the associated challenges and opportunities, and how traditional banks can adapt to remain competitive and stable in a rapidly evolving financial ecosystem. A qualitative methodology was employed, involving semi-structured interviews with 10 executives and risk management experts from the financial sector. The study employed a concurrence analysis to identify semantic relationships among categories. The unit of analysis was the paragraph, and concurrence was computed based on the frequency with which two categories appeared within the same segment. Key findings indicate that the most significant risks are linked to technological competition, regulatory shifts, cybersecurity, and consumer trust. Conversely, notable opportunities exist in technological modernization, enhanced regulatory compliance, collaboration with digital players, and the development of user-centric products and services. This study introduces the concept of a cultural gap in strategic adaptation, distinct from resistance to change, by emphasizing misalignment between organizational culture and the pace of digital transformation. This gap poses a strategic risk by delaying execution, increasing exposure to regulatory and technological risks, and reducing competitiveness. Full article

In the contemporary dynamic world, where unforeseen situations are increasingly routine for organisations and the successful integration of new technologies is inevitable, creativity and resilience have emerged as essential characteristics of modern organisations. To explore the links between creativity and organisational resilience, the following scientific problem is proposed: what is the relationship between creativity and organisational resilience in service organisations? A quantitative study was conducted to address this problem. Data was collected from Lithuanian service sector organisations using an online survey questionnaire. During the survey, 446 respondents from various organisations in the service sector completed questionnaires distributed via an electronic platform. The hypothesis was tested using Spearman’s rank correlation, descriptive statistics (mean, mode, median, standard deviation) and independent-sample t-tests to assess statistically significant differences between respondents’ positions. The study found that organisations that actively cultivate and sustain a culture of creativity are more resilient—both in their day-to-day operations and when confronted with unexpected challenges or threats. This study further demonstrated that creativity within an organisation is related to resilience through human interactions, particularly within the dimensions of social relationships and psychological well-being. The resilience of an organisation was also found to be strongly influenced by the quality of relationships, mutual trust, and collaboration between employees and managers. These findings affirm the importance of creativity, which is fostered through social connections, in strengthening the resilience of organisations. Full article

This article presents a conceptual framework linking responsible leadership competencies to organizational processes relevant for sustainability transformation. A leader’s personal impact is conceptualized as indirect through organizational governance, prioritization, collaboration, and innovation. The article provides a conceptual mapping approach that systematically connects individual leadership competencies with strategic organizational impact areas. The framework builds on the Competency Assessment for Responsible Leadership (CARL) and the Positive Impact Organization (PIO) concept to relate leadership capabilities to organizational transformation requirements. Five responsible leadership competencies—ethics and values, self-awareness, stakeholder relations, change and innovation, and systems thinking—are mapped to five organizational impact areas: governance alignment, sustainability culture, external stakeholder validation, purpose-driven product and service innovation, and transformative sustainability. The article identifies how specific leadership competencies align with distinct organizational leverage points, clarifying the mechanisms through which leaders shape structures, decision processes, cultural norms, and innovation pathways associated with sustainability transformation. By specifying these relationships, the framework distinguishes leadership impact at the organizational level and provides a structured basis for analyzing how leadership competencies contribute to an organization’s capacity for societal and environmental contribution. The framework is applicable to research on responsible leadership and business sustainability and informs leadership development and management education concerned with sustainability-oriented organizational change. Collagen type I has become a practical cornerstone for constructing biologically meaningful barrier interfaces in microfluidic systems. Its fibrillar architecture, native ligand display, and susceptibility to cell-mediated remodeling support epithelial and endothelial polarization, tight junctions, and transport behaviors that are difficult to achieve with purely synthetic barrier interfaces. Recent advances pair these biological strengths with tighter engineering control. For example, ultrathin collagen barriers (tens of micrometers or less) enable faster molecular exchange and short-range signaling; gentle crosslinking and composite designs limit gel compaction and delamination under flow; and patterning/bioprinting introduce alignment, graded porosity, and robust integration into device geometries. Applications now span intestine, vasculature, skin, airway, kidney, and tumor–stroma interfaces, with readouts including transepithelial/transendothelial electrical resistance (TEER), tracer permeability, and image-based quality control of fiber architecture. Persistent constraints include batch variability, long-term mechanical drift, limited standardization of fibrillogenesis conditions, and difficulties scaling fabrication without loss of bioactivity. Priorities include reporting standards for microstructure and residual crosslinker, chips for continuous monitoring, immune-competent co-cultures, and closer collaboration across materials science, microfabrication, computational modelling, and clinical pharmacology. Thus, this review synthesizes the state-of-the-art and offers practical guidance on technological readiness and future directions for using collagen type I as a biological barrier interface in biomimetic microfluidic systems. This paper investigates how Scottish rural schools engage with their broader educational landscape, particularly through collaborative practices and capacity-building efforts. It examines how these schools cultivate a culture of partnership, both among institutions and within their communities, to strengthen leadership and enhance teaching and learning. Guided by Place-Based Education (PBE) as its conceptual framework, the study emphasises equity challenges rooted in local contexts and situates rural education within Scotland’s historical, societal, and policy landscape. Drawing on qualitative case studies of five schools, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with principals and supported by documentary evidence and student attainment data from national assessments. The findings showcase school leaders’ efforts to enhance social and educational outcomes and build sustainable, equity-driven systems. The paper concludes with implications for policy and practice, addressing equitable access, workforce recruitment and retention, and the potential for schools to collaborate with local and regional stakeholders to strengthen rural education. This article interrogates how an everyday Facebook user in Nigeria adopts AI-generated images as a sustained mode of online and digital self-presentation. This study situates this practice within debates on posthumanity, aesthetic labour, and platform affordance. Drawing on a qualitative case study of a pseudonymised account (“Ada Alika”), this article analyses 25 AI-generated self-images posted between February and September 2025 alongside 25 non-AI-generated images. Using a triangulated methodological approach that combines media archaeology, online observation, and visual thematic analysis, the article describes how generative AI functions as an aesthetic and ontological collaborator in the construction of online selfhood. The results from the analysis are organised around three interconnected themes: “Posthuman and Hyperreal Self”, Aesthetic Labour and AI-mediated Persona”, and High Audience Engagement. The analysis indicates that AI-generated images produce a hyperreal self that exceeds naturalistic representation while remaining socially legible and desirable. These images demand sustained aesthetic labour and align closely with Facebook’s attention economy, resulting in markedly higher engagement than non-AI images. Audience interactions further reveal a level of visual literacy in which distinctions between the real, artificial, and aspirational are fluidly negotiated. By foregrounding a non-Western and non-influencer context, this article extends existing scholarship on AI-mediated selfhood and demonstrates how AI-generated images on Facebook reshapes everyday practices of self-representation and visibility in online digital culture. Rural areas are currently facing a deepening “social-ecological divide,” where the fragmentation of natural, economic, and cultural data—often trapped in “data silos”—hinders effective systemic governance. To bridge this gap, in this study, the Rural Landscape Information Model (RLIM), an integrative framework designed to reconfigure rural connections through data fusion, process coordination, and performance feedback, is proposed. We validate the framework’s effectiveness through a comparative analysis of two distinct rural archetypes in China: the innovation-driven Yu Village and the heritage-conservation-oriented Hani Terraces. Our results reveal that digital technologies drive distinct empowerment pathways moderated by regional contexts: (1) In the data domain, heterogeneous resources were successfully integrated into the framework in both cases (achieving a Monitoring Coverage > 80%), yet served divergent strategic ends—comprehensive territorial management in Yu Village versus precision heritage monitoring in the Hani Terraces. (2) In the process domain, digital platforms restructured social interactions differently. Yu Village achieved high individual participation (Participation Rate ≈ 0.85) via mobile governance apps, whereas the Hani Terraces relied on cooperative-mediated engagement to bridge the digital divide for elderly farmers. (3) In the performance domain, the interventions yielded contrasting but positive economic-ecological outcomes. Yu Village realized a 25% growth in tourism revenue through “industrial transformation” (Ecology+), while the Hani Terraces achieved a 12% value enhancement by stabilizing traditional agricultural ecosystems (Culture+). This study contributes a verifiable theoretical model and a set of operational tools, demonstrating that digital technologies are not merely instrumental add-ons but catalysts for fostering resilient, collaborative, and context-specific rural socio-ecological systems, ultimately offering scalable governance strategies for sustainable rural revitalization in the digital era.
