This work explores the application of robotic systems in archaeology, highlighting their transformative role in excavation, documentation, and the preservation of cultural heritage. By combining technologies such as LiDAR, GIS, 3D modeling, sonar, and other sensors with autonomous and semi-autonomous platforms, archaeologists can now reach inaccessible sites, automate artifact analysis, and reconstruct fragmented remains with greater precision. The study provides a systematic overview of underwater, aerial, terrestrial, and other robotic systems, drawing on scientific literature that showcases their innovative use in both fieldwork and museum settings. Selected examples illustrate how robotics is being applied to solve key archaeological challenges in new and effective ways. While the paper emphasizes the potential of these technologies, it also addresses their technical, economic, and ethical limitations, concluding that successful adoption depends on interdisciplinary collaboration, careful implementation, and a balanced respect for cultural integrity. The identification of unmarked graves is important in archaeology, forensics, and cemetery management, but invasive methods are often restricted due to ethical or cultural concerns. This necessitates the use of non-invasive geophysical techniques. Our study demonstrates the potential of induced polarization (IP) imaging as a non-invasive remote sensing technique specifically suited for detecting and characterizing unmarked graves. IP leverages changes in the electrical properties of soil and pore water, influenced by the accumulation of organic matter from decomposition processes. Measurements were conducted at an inactive cemetery using non-invasive textile electrodes to map a documented grave from the early 1990s, with a survey design optimized for high spatial resolution. The results reveal a distinct polarizable anomaly at a 0.75–1.0 m depth with phase shifts exceeding 12 mrad, attributed to organic carbon from wooden burial boxes, and a plume-shaped conductive anomaly indicating the migration of dissolved organic matter. While electrical conductivity alone yielded diffuse grave boundaries, the polarization response sharply delineated the grave, aligning with photographic documentation. These findings underscore the value of IP imaging as a non-invasive, data-driven approach for the accurate localization and characterization of graves. The methodology presented here offers a promising new tool for archaeological prospection and forensic search operations, expanding the geophysical toolkit available for remote sensing in culturally and legally sensitive contexts. Recent archaeological discoveries across the Aegean, Cyprus, and western Anatolia have renewed interest in pre-Neolithic seafaring and early island colonization. However, the environmental contexts that support such early coastal occupations remain poorly understood, largely due to the submergence of Pleistocene shorelines following post-glacial sea-level rise. This study addresses this gap through an integrated geoarchaeological investigation of the pre-Neolithic site of Ouriakos on Lemnos Island, northeastern Aegean (Greece), dated to the mid-11th millennium BCE. By reconstructing both the terrestrial and submerged paleolandscapes of the site, we examine ecological conditions, resource availability, and sedimentary processes that shaped human activity and site preservation. Employing a multiscale methodological approach—combining bathymetric survey, geomorphological mapping, soil micromorphology, geochemical analysis, and Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) dating—we present a comprehensive framework for identifying and interpreting early coastal settlements. Stratigraphic evidence reveals phases of fluvial, aeolian, and colluvial deposition associated with an alternating coastline. The core findings reveal that Ouriakos was established during a phase of environmental stability marked by paleosol development, indicating sustained human presence. By bridging terrestrial and marine data, this research contributes significantly to the understanding of human coastal mobility during the Pleistocene–Holocene transition. Full article

Calls for an “archaeology of climate change” highlight the interest in integrating human land use histories with the paleoenvironmental record. Shifts in land use patterns, observed via regional archaeological surveys, have been used in studies exploring the relationships between human and environmental systems, often via the Adaptive Cycle (AC). Recent work has combined datasets from separate surveys to examine macroregional patterns, which can then be integrated with environmental proxy data. However, efforts at aggregating archaeological data are often problematized due to projects’ differing collection methods and periodizations. This study ascribes the formal constructs of the AC to survey data to minimize data aggregation issues and maintain local integrity. Aoristic sum functions were performed individually on data from four projects in the northeastern Peloponnese to identify local patterns. These data were then aggregated, allowing for changes in land use to be observed at the macro and regional levels. Further measurements relating to land use abandonment, continuity, expansion, and potential serve as proxy data to identify the AC constructs of organization, exploitation, conservation, and release. The approach allows for cross-comparative regional analysis and the creation of an aggregated dataset that describes macroregional trends, essential to integrating human and paleoenvironmental narratives over time. The great megalithic sites reveal an extended use of their monuments. In Late Prehistory, in Protohistory, and even in historical times, dolmens remained visible references on the landscape and were central for navigating it. The megaliths of Menga, Viera, and Romeral provide quality data to confirm their continued relevance. Our aim here is to understand whether menhirs also played that role, using the area of Tierras de Antequera, which is connected to the sea, as a case study. With that goal in mind, a research project has been initiated through intensive archaeological field surveying, combined with the collection of testimonies from oral tradition and other archaeological tools such as GIS, geophysical prospection, photogrammetry and RTI, for the detection of engravings and paintings on some of the located landmarks. We present in this paper the first geological analyses in the megalithic territory of Antequera to determine the raw material of the menhirs that are studied and the geological outcrops from which they come. Recent Advances in Understanding R-Process Nucleosynthesis in Metal-Poor Stars and Stellar Systems

The rapid neutron-capture process (r-process) is responsible for the creation of roughly half of the elements heavier than iron, including precious metals like silver, gold, and platinum, as well as radioactive elements such as thorium and uranium. Despite its importance, the nature of the astrophysical sites where the r-process occurs, and the detailed mechanisms of its formation, remain elusive. The key to resolving these mysteries lies in the study of chemical signatures preserved in ancient, metal-poor stars. These stars, which formed in the early Universe, retain the chemical fingerprints of early nucleosynthetic events and offer a unique opportunity to trace the origins of r-process elements in the early Galaxy. In this review, we explore the state-of-the-art understanding of r-process nucleosynthesis, focusing on the sites, progenitors, and formation mechanisms. We discuss the role of potential astrophysical sites such as neutron star mergers, core-collapse supernovae, magneto-rotational supernovae, and collapsars, that can play a key role in producing the heavy elements. We also highlight the importance of studying these signatures through high-resolution spectroscopic surveys, stellar archaeology, and multi-messenger astronomy. Recent advancements, such as the gravitational wave event GW170817 and detection of the r-process in the ejecta of its associated kilonovae, have established neutron star mergers as one of the confirmed sites. However, questions remain regarding whether they are the only sites that could have contributed in early epochs or if additional sources are needed to explain the signatures of r-process found in the oldest stars. Additionally, there are strong indications pointing towards additional sources of r-process-rich nuclei in the context of Galactic evolutionary timescales. These are several of the outstanding questions that led to the formation of collaborative efforts such as the R-Process Alliance, which aims to consolidate observational data, modeling techniques, and theoretical frameworks to derive better constraints on deciphering the astrophysical sites and timescales of r-process enrichment in the Galaxy. This review summarizes what has been learned so far, the challenges that remain, and the exciting prospects for future discoveries. The increasing synergy between observational facilities, computational models, and large-scale surveys is poised to transform our understanding of r-process nucleosynthesis in the coming years. In the 19th century, the British archaeologist Sir Alexander Cunningham identified the remains of an unidentified Buddhist monastery at Jamāl Gaṛhī, an ancient site located approximately 13 km from present-day Mardān, Pakistan. Subsequent excavations by the Archaeological Survey of India between 1920 and 1921 unearthed a schist inscription dated to the year “359”. Heinrich Lüders, the renowned German Indologist and epigraphist, attributed this inscription to the Dharmaguptaka sect/school. Despite this early attribution, the Monastery’s precise sectarian characteristics have remained largely unexplored in later scholarship. This article reevaluates the site’s sectarian identity by employing a “ground-to-text” methodology that integrates archaeological evidence with textual analysis, with a particular focus on the Chinese translation of the Dharmaguptaka Vinaya. Through this comparative framework, this study seeks to elucidate the religious ideas reflected in the site’s material culture and their relationship with Dharmaguptaka disciplinary thought. The analysis encompasses the architectural remnants of the stūpa excavated by Cunningham and the “Fasting Buddha” statuary, now preserved in the National Museum of Pakistan, the British Museum, and other sites, situating these artifacts within the distinctive visual and contemplative traditions linked to the Dharmaguptaka Vinaya. By integrating architectural, sculptural, textual, and epigraphic materials, this article provides a nuanced understanding of sectarian developments at Jamāl Gaṛhī and argues that an explicit emphasis on the ‘Middle Way’ ideology constituted a defining feature of the Dharmaguptaka tradition during this period. For archaeological studies, the expected outcome of a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey is a series of time-slices (or depth-slices) that mark the position of buried structures at different depths. The clarity of these time-slices is strongly site-dependent and is particularly worsened in the presence of even small percentages of clay, which strongly attenuates the GPR signal. This is the condition affecting the Greek–Roman archaeological site of Tindari (Sicily, Italy). Here, we performed a multichannel GPR survey particularly focusing on a residential insula. In order to increase the signal-to-noise ratio, we tested two processing strategies: a conventional in-line stacking and a new concept of off-line stacking. This last was performed dividing spatially adjacent channels of the GPR multichannel system into groups and stacking the signals of each group at each specific location. We observed that off-line stacking improves the signal-to-noise ratio in 2D sections and time-slices quality. Comparisons showed that off-line stacking has a clear advantage over traditional in-line stacking, at least for the specific application reported in this paper. Off-line stacking of GPR multichannel systems is, therefore, simple but very effective in increasing the investigation depth, especially in challenging environments. Full article

In the field of building archaeology, the analysis of wall surfaces represents a fundamental tool for the study of an architecture and its construction phases. In fact, masonry stores valuable information regarding not only used materials and construction techniques but also transformations happen over time for natural events or anthropic interventions. The traditional approach to the analysis of building materials is mainly based on direct observation and manual annotations based on orthophotos obtained through photogrammetric surveys. This process, while providing a high degree of accuracy and understanding, is extremely time- and resource-consuming. In addition, the lack of standardised procedures for the statistical analysis of measurements leads to data that are difficult to compare for different contexts. Time and subjectivity are ultimately the two main limitations that most hinder the diffusion of the mensiochronological approach and for this reason, the most recent artificial intelligence solutions for the segmentation and extraction of measurements of individual masonry components will be addressed. Finally, a workflow will be presented based on image segmentation using machine learning models and the automatic extraction and statistical analysis of measurements using a script designed specifically by the author for the mensiochronological analysis of Roman brick masonry. This study investigates the potential of reality-based 3D digital modeling, acquired for scientific purposes, to enhance the understanding and accessibility of ballistic imprints on Pompeii’s city walls. These impact marks, attributed to the Sullan siege of 89 BC, were caused by projectiles launched by Roman elastic torsion weapons. High-resolution models were acquired through integrated 3D survey techniques to create both virtual and physical replicas. These assets enhance museum accessibility, offering interactive digital content and tactile 3D-printed replicas for visually impaired and mobility-restricted visitors. The findings highlight the role of digital heritage in archaeological research, conservation, and public engagement, bridging the gap between academic study and inclusive cultural dissemination. A comprehensive geophysical survey, combining magnetic gradiometry and ground-penetrating radar (GPR), was undertaken at the Roman fort of Aquis Querquennis to map buried archaeological structures, including potential walls and internal divisions, within its unexcavated areas. This research significantly enhances the understanding of the fort’s previously incomplete layout. The synergistic integration of geophysical data provides detailed spatial data of the buried archaeology, facilitating informed dissemination of the site’s historical significance and guiding the planning of future archaeological investigations. Cultural tourism can act as a driver for inner area development, bringing about a range of socio-economic benefits through economic stimulation, quality of life improvement, and cultural heritage preservation. Inner territories, set apart by geographic marginality and low population density, hold a rich cultural and environmental heritage that, however, remains off the radar and left behind. Guided by the principles of endogenous local development, this article seeks to contribute to the existing body of research by proposing potential strategies for local growth rooted in cultural tourism. From this perspective, we identified the Basilicata region (Southern Italy) as a proper test area. The region is rich in archaeological, monumental and museum evidence, but is characterized, except in a few areas, by a low rate of tourist turnout. Through a replicable, comprehensive, and flexible methodology—drawing on bibliographic research, analysis of archaeological, archival, erudite and antiquarian sources, and carrying out field surveys—the different points of interest in the region have been brought together under specific cultural themes. Results include the design of three detailed routes (Via Herculia, Frederick II’s, and St Michael’s cultural routes) useful for three different types of tourism (sustainable, emotional, and accessible). Possible scenarios for valorization and fruition are also proposed, paying particular attention to digital technologies. Thus, this research aligns with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 8 and 11 promoting cultural heritage valorization and preservation, shoring up economic revitalization, stepping up community engagement, and pushing forward environmentally friendly tourism practices. Research findings can attract the interest of a wide range of stakeholders such as tourism professionals, local authorities, cultural and creative industries, local communities and entrepreneurs, as well as academics and researchers. The methodological approach can be considered for the valorization and tourist enjoyment of inner areas in other countries, with particular focus on those falling within the Mediterranean region which is rich in cultural heritage, environmental value, and socio-economic potential. In their evolution from conservation places of isolated resources to social spaces in service of communities, museums are increasingly called to express their representative character towards their originating territories. Furthermore, the museum’s mission has been gradually enriched with new, more complex functions towards local communities, through a call to actively confront with their contexts, a trend the recent pandemic events have only accelerated. Cultural heritage, with museums at the forefront, as an acknowledged driver of socioeconomic development, has manifold impacts on territories, which have been identified and investigated in the literature, often from a potential perspective. Given the strong territorial component of the museum heritage connection with its reference context, this study aims to investigate the contribution that mapping and GIS technologies, traditionally employed at the scale of single museum buildings, can offer in assessing the actual “living” presence of museums in the local socioeconomic and productive fabric, through the relationships with other reference entities in the territories and their outreach. Taking a sample with a marked nature of spatially ‘distributed’ heritage (archaeologic museums of the Puglia region, South Italy) as a case study, the article presents a mapped representation of a questionnaire-based survey of museums’ recent territorial relationships. The twofold outcomes of the study show, on the one hand, that the investigated sample still experiences criticalities in fully expressing and communicating its potentialities and values in the current scenario and, on the other hand, that mapping technologies can concretely contribute to the museum sector’s innovation by examining its territorial relationships, in line with the current conceptual evolution, also with possible implications on museums’ quality assessment. The present study constitutes the latest in a series of investigations conducted between 2021 and 2023 as part of the ongoing, multidisciplinary research project at the UNESCO archaeological site of Umm ar-Rasas in Amman Governorate, Jordan, which began in 2013. Building on the foundations of previous studies, this latest research offers a comprehensive analysis of the region, with a special focus on pinpointing the boundaries of the Byzantine–Umayyad settlement. The delineation of these boundaries has hitherto been the subject of theoretical discourse only, thus rendering this study a significant addition to the field. An innovative multi-dimensional, multi-methodological, and multi-scalar approach has been adopted, incorporating the capabilities of remote sensing technologies, archaeological surveys, laser scans, and geophysical prospecting to facilitate a shared interpretation of the results. This approach has culminated in the establishment of a probable configuration of the northern limits, which is truly remarkable. Full article
