The artistic exchange during Buddhism’s early transmission represents a vital field within Silk Road art studies. When Buddhist art first entered China during the Eastern Han Dynasty (25–220), many artistic elements originating from Indian and Central Asian traditions manifested via a highly fragmentary mode of dissemination. As a result, prior scholarship on Buddhist art in the Han Dynasty has predominantly focused on case studies of individual motifs such as Buddha images, lotus patterns, lions, and elephants. These studies form an essential foundation for the present research. This paper observes that Buddha images from the Han period were not always disseminated as isolated icons but were frequently closely associated with octagonal columns and arches/lintels. Tracing their origins reveals a connection to the “column–arch–Buddha” narrative motif found in the architectural art of Indian and Central Asian Buddhism. This motif extended eastward through the Western Regions (Xiyu 西域, present-day Xinjiang 新疆) and ultimately reached the core territories of the Han Empire, undergoing various transformations—including deconstruction, reassembly, and translation—in the process. Understanding these combinatory modes and their underlying intent is crucial for comprehending the essential nature of the early interaction and fusion between Buddhist art and Han Chinese civilization. This article examines the visual reception of the woman of Endor (1 Sam 28) and her gradual integration into the Western imaginary of the witch. In the first section, it offers a concise overview of the formation of witchcraft in late medieval and early modern visual culture, when iconographic and discursive registers contributed to the consolidation of a demonological and persecutory repertoire associated with the female body. Against this background, the study analyzes how the figure of Endor came to be interpreted and represented through increasingly negative categories—eventually becoming a conventionalized motif in the history of art—despite the fact that the biblical narrative originally presents her as a ritual mediator whose role in Saul’s episode is not constructed as a paradigmatic case of “witchcraft” in a strict sense. Drawing on a methodology of visual exegesis that brings together cultural biblical studies, art history, and gender studies, this article examines a range of artworks depicting the episode in order to show how visual culture negotiates the boundary between the legitimate and the forbidden, and how the later demonization of Endor reveals persistent tensions between orthodoxy and heterodoxy across different historical contexts. Background/Objectives: Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is a state-of-the-art en bloc resection for early gastro-intestinal cancers and precursors developed and validated in Japan. Western expertise with this complex technique remains limited. Tutored training might be optimal for patients and ESD learning. We established ESD tutoring courses led by experienced Japanese experts to provide (i) optimal long-term curative outcomes and low complication rates for patients and (ii) hands-on training on difficult lesions for European endoscopists under direct expert supervision. Methods: Prospective data from 2011 to 2015 (follow-up to 12/2024) were analyzed. A total of 118 neoplasms (50% HGIEN and cancer) in 101 patients (median age 68 [37–91] years; 38% with significant comorbidities) were treated with expert or tutored ESD. Japanese experts performed 28 ESDs, while 22 trained beginners conducted 90 supervised procedures on difficult lesions during 5 live and 20 tutoring events (1–4 days each). Results: Analysis of the complete data showed curative and en bloc resection rates of 88% and 95%, respectively, with no recurrence after R0 resections during a median follow-up of 9.8 [1.5–14.9] years. Long-term survival remained recurrence-free after endoscopic resection of 3 recurrent adenomas (at R1/Rx) and curative surgery/2nd ESD for 5 non-curative ESDs. Adverse events occurred in 9.3% without emergency surgery or 30-day mortality. Comparing expert-only vs. tutored ESD procedures, beginners correctly applied curative ESD indications in 94% of 118 neoplasms. Experts resected larger lesions (22 cm2) at a rate of 9.3 cm2/h in 121 min. Tutored beginners achieved a 75% [25–100] self-completion rate on 33% smaller lesions in 112 min. Conclusions: ESD tutoring courses led by Japanese experts ensure excellent patient outcomes and standardized procedural training. This model may foster professional ESD performance across European referral centers. Full article

Background and Objectives: The Mediterranean diet is traditionally linked to metabolic balance and improved reproductive health. However, dietary patterns in Mediterranean regions have progressively shifted toward more Westernized models, particularly among women of reproductive age, raising concerns about declining adherence to this historically protective diet. Objective: To assess adherence to the Mediterranean diet among women undergoing assisted reproductive technology (ART) and to explore possible associations with ovarian response and clinical outcomes. Materials and Methods: This prospective observational cohort study was conducted at a reproductive clinic in Sicily between 1 June and 31 July 2022. One hundred women aged 18–40 years undergoing infertility assessment and scheduled for controlled ovarian stimulation were enrolled. Mediterranean diet adherence was evaluated using the validated 14-item MEDAS questionnaire during the first clinical visit. ART-related outcomes, including ovarian response and pregnancy rates, were extracted from medical records. Results: The mean MEDAS score was 7.6 ± 1.2: 93% of women showed moderate adherence, 3% high adherence, and 4% low adherence. No significant associations were found between MEDAS score, and total oocytes retrieved, MII oocytes, or clinical pregnancy. Conclusions: Despite living in a traditionally Mediterranean area, participants demonstrated only moderate adherence to the Mediterranean diet. Although no associations with single-cycle ART outcomes emerged, the findings underscore the need for structured nutritional counseling to reinforce sustained adherence and support long-term reproductive health. While the Seokguram Grotto is celebrated in art history for its sculptural mastery, its architectural identity as a constructed stone dome—distinct from excavated caves—remains under-researched. Existing studies have largely relied on geometric analyses based on irrational numbers, which lack a historical basis. This study aims to reconstruct the logical design process of Seokguram by distinguishing between architectural planning and the realities of construction. Methodologically, we employ the concept of design constraints to analyze the grotto’s dimensional system and scene perception. We identify external constraints, such as the recorded dimensions of the Bodhgaya Buddha and cosmological symbolism (rectangular antechamber and circular posterior), and internal constraints, specifically the need for complete visual coordination between the Buddha’s head and the detached nimbus stone. Our analysis reveals that the designers negotiated these constraints through an iterative process. Key findings demonstrate that the pedestal’s height and position were adjusted, and the arched headstone was strategically designed as a threshold to ensure the perfect alignment of the Buddha and the nimbus from the viewer’s perspective. Furthermore, contrary to previous hypotheses proposing the use of irrational numbers (e.g., √2), this study proves that the grotto follows a proportional system based on integer modules (with 12 cheok as the main module) and binary division, which facilitated practical construction. In conclusion, Seokguram is not merely a product of aesthetic intuition but a masterpiece of rational design. In contrast to the vertical transcendence of Western Cathedrals, Seokguram Grotto embodies tectonics of empathy, prioritizing human-scale intimacy and visual harmony. Full article

The function of film grammar in the creation of narrative cinema is a central one when considering the realities of cinema as a global art. Since its birth from a confluence of European scientific and aesthetic principles, cinema has become a ubiquitous art form, but together with this growth has come the spread of those very principles from which cinema sprang. As an example, camera movement in Japanese film typically follows a grammatical pattern to privilege left-to-right, chronological movement as set by western cinema. That is, the camera will introduce information as a visual analogue to the process of reading a written, western text, with the lens operating very much as an eye in its trajectory across the ‘page’ of the screen. Building on work by Jean-Louis Baudry, Brian O’Leary and Jean Louis Comolli, this paper demonstrates this feature of Japanese cinema, using Ichikawa Jun’s 2004 film, Tony Takitani, as a case study. Through a close reading of the film and its pattern of movement, this paper proposes that we may discern a symptom of the persistent inscription of coloniality imposed in and through cinema—the movement of the camera parodies reading but also accepts as natural an ‘unnatural’, western pattern of movement. The act of adaptation, too, both anticipates and supports the conception of cinema as reading-parody, with Murakami Haruki’s short story “Tony Takitani” operating as a meaningful substratum to the process of vision-as-coloniality. Natural disasters demand swift and accurate impact assessment, yet traditional field-based methods remain prohibitively slow. While semi-automatic techniques leveraging remote sensing and drone imagery have accelerated evaluations, existing datasets predominantly emphasize Western infrastructure, offering limited representation of African contexts. The EDDA dataset (a Mozambique post-disaster building damage dataset developed under the Efficient Humanitarian Aid Through Intelligent Image Analysis project), addresses this critical gap by capturing rural and urban damage patterns in Mozambique following Cyclone Idai. Despite encouraging early results, significant challenges persist due to task complexity, severe class imbalance, and substantial architectural diversity across regions. Building upon EDDA, this study introduces a two-stage building damage assessment pipeline that decouples localization from classification. We employ lightweight You Only Look Once (YOLO)-based detectors—RTMDet, YOLOv7, and YOLOv8—for building localization, followed by dedicated damage severity classification using state-of-the-art architectures including Compact Convolutional Transformers, EfficientNet, and ResNet. This approach tests whether separating feature extraction tasks—assigning detectors solely to localization and specialized classifiers to damage assessment—yields superior performance compared to multi-class detection models that jointly learn both objectives. Comprehensive evaluation across 640+ model combinations demonstrates that our two-stage pipeline achieves competitive performance (mAP 0.478) with enhanced modularity compared to multi-class detection baselines (mAP 0.455), offering improved robustness across diverse building types and imbalanced damage classes. Intangible cultural heritage (ICH) constitutes a vital component of cultural diversity and a defining element of regional identity. Understanding its spatial patterns and determinants is fundamental to informing robust conservation strategies and ensuring its continuity across generations. This research employs kernel density analysis, average nearest neighbor analysis, and Poisson regression to examine the spatial distribution patterns and determinants of 3576 national, provincial, and municipal ICH items across 21 prefecture-level cities in Guangdong Province, China. The research results show the following: (1) All ICH categories in Guangdong province exhibit a significant spatial clustering, with Quyi (Chinese folk performing arts) demonstrating the most pronounced agglomeration, followed by traditional opera and traditional music. (2) Kernel density estimates display pronounced hotspots in the Guangzhou–Foshan core of the Pearl River Delta (PRD) and in Eastern Guangdong’s Chaozhou–Shantou corridor, while each heritage category displays its own geographically distinct footprint. (3) From the perspective of natural factors, ICH items are predominantly located in areas characterized by flat topography, proximity to rivers, and a mild subtropical climate, notably the coastal regions of the PRD, Eastern Guangdong, and Western Guangdong. These areas also possess superior resource endowments and transportation infrastructure. (4) Regarding socioeconomic factors, the analysis results point out distinct socioeconomic influences. Specifically, a larger registered population and higher per capita Gross Domestic Product (GDP) correspond to more ICH items. However, two factors demonstrate negative relationships: the total resident population and the level of dialect diversity. This study systematically elucidates the spatial distribution characteristics of ICH in Guangdong Province and their key influencing factors. The outcomes offer critical empirical evidence, thereby informing the design and implementation of optimized ICH conservation measures, promoting coordinated regional cultural development, and achieving the sustainable utilization of ICH resources. Background/Objectives: Acephalic spermatozoa syndrome (ASS) is a rare subtype of male infertility characterized by headless sperm due to defective head–tail coupling. Genetic factors are recognized as the primary etiology of ASS; however, known pathogenic mutations only explain a subset of ASS cases. Further investigations are required to elucidate the underlying genetic pathogenesis of ASS and the implications of such genetic defects for assisted reproductive technology (ART) outcomes. This study aimed to identify a novel PMFBP1 mutation in an ASS patient; investigate the effects of the identified mutation on sperm ultrastructure and PMFBP1 protein expression/stability, and assess ART outcomes using the patient’s sperm. Methods: One 34-year-old infertile male with ASS was enrolled. Genetic screening was performed via whole-exome sequencing (WES), followed by Sanger sequencing for mutation validation. Sperm morphological characteristics were evaluated using Diff-Quik staining (for general morphology), transmission electron microscopy (TEM, for ultrastructural analysis), and peanut agglutinin (PNA) staining. Protein expression and stability were analyzed by Western blot and cycloheximide (CHX)/MG132 assays. ART outcomes were compared between the in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycles using the patient’s sperm and those using donor sperm. Results: In IVF cycles, donor sperm achieved normal fertilization (characterized by two pronuclei [2PN] formation), whereas the patient’s sperm failed to form 2PN and leading to embryo fragmentation. Genetic sequencing identified a novel nonsense mutation in PMFBP1 (c.2641C>T), which introduced a premature stop codon and resulted in a premature protein product (p.Arg881Ter). Morphologically, this mutation led to complete sperm head–tail detachment, and abnormalities in acrosome structure and sperm head–neck junction. The absence of PMFBP1 protein in the patient’s spermatozoa was observed. The in vitro assays showed the c.2641C>T mutation induced expression of the truncated PMFBP1 protein and significantly altered PMFBP1 protein stability. Conclusions: The PMFBP1 c.2641C>T mutation impairs sperm head–tail adhesion, thereby contributing to the pathogenesis of ASS. This study expands the clinical mutational spectrum of PMFBP1-associated male infertility and provides valuable insights for the genetic diagnosis of ASS patients. Additionally, these findings may lay a foundation for the choice of therapeutic strategies targeting PMFBP1-related ASS. Full article

Recent advancements in deep learning have significantly improved fault diagnosis methods. However, challenges such as insufficient feature extraction, limited long-range dependency modeling, and environmental noise continue to hinder their effectiveness. This paper presents a novel mixture of multi-view convolutional (MOM-Conv) layers integrating the Mixture of Experts (MOE) mechanism. This design effectively captures and fuses both local and contextual information, thereby enhancing feature extraction and representation. This proposed approach aims to improve prediction accuracy under varying noise conditions, particularly in rolling ball bearing systems characterized by noisy signals. Additionally, we propose the Mamba-enhanced adaptive self-attention long short-term memory (MASA-LSTM) model, which effectively captures both global and local dependencies in ultra-long time series data. This model addresses the limitations of traditional models in extracting long-range dependencies from such signals. The architecture also integrates a multi-step temporal state fusion mechanism to optimize information flow and incorporates adaptive parameter tuning, thereby improving dynamic adaptability within the LSTM framework. To further mitigate the impact of noise, we transform vibration signals into denoised multi-channel representations, enhancing model stability in noisy environments. Experimental results show that our proposed model outperforms existing state-of-the-art approaches on both the Paderborn and Case Western Reserve University bearing datasets, demonstrating remarkable robustness and effectiveness across various noise levels. The recent years have seen a significantly increased representation of African artists at major recurring shows of contemporary art. This paper looks at works featured in the past few editions of La Biennale di Venezia, Kassel’s documenta, Berlin Biennale, and the European Nomadic Biennial Manifesta—events that once stemmed from civilisational transformations and now function as influential art institutions. The way these are organised leaves room for art which deals with pressing, difficult matters; especially our relationship with the Global South is becoming a major concern. Africa’s output is unlike all traditional forms of Western culture, and its most interesting instances are participatory, socially contextualised, and utilitarian; colonial crimes and trauma count among vital subjects. At the same time, various uncompromising approaches challenge our notions about how to conceive of an exhibition and how an art institution should operate: works of art are no longer fetishised simply as appealing manifestations of an unfamiliar aesthetic. Consequently, the art world has no other choice but to adjust the programming of its initiatives, shows, and organisations so that space is made for endeavours firmly rooted in the present day, actually facing its challenges. Not enough attention has been paid to the artistic approach of depicting human figures at the center of double-scroll patterns in Chinese Buddhist art. Originating from Greco-Roman culture, this motif entered China from the overland Silk Road around the late 5th century, evolving into two systems. The Hexi Corridor system, centered on Dunhuang, predominantly features lotus-born beings holding vines. The figural types evolved from lotus-born beings to celestial beings, bodhisattvas, and buddhas, with postures ranging from vine-holding to mudra-forming, lotus-tray-lifting, music-playing, and dancing, demonstrating a clear trajectory of development. The Northern Central Plains system, successively centered in Pingcheng, Qingzhou, and Yecheng, developed a relatively complete sequence only in buddha figures. The motif first spread through the Hexi Corridor before influencing the Northern Central Plains. It was adapted from its original Mediterranean context of mythological themes and funerary or temple use to illustrate Buddhist doctrines in China, absorbing elements of Han, Western Regions, and Central Asian cultures. By clarifying the motif’s origin, spread, evolution, and adaptation through systematic analysis of material evidence, this article reveals an intrinsic connection between Greco-Roman culture and Chinese Buddhist art, enriches the history of Sino-foreign cultural exchange, and reflects how Buddhism absorbed diverse cultural elements to achieve Sinicization. Identification of Proteins and MicroRNAs with Prognostic Value for Assisted Reproduction Technology Outcomes in Follicular Fluid of Women with Endometriosis: A Pilot Study

This study aims to identify molecular markers with prognostic value for biochemical pregnancy in follicular fluid (FF) samples from women with endometriosis after assisted reproductive technology (ART) intervention. Levels of growth differentiation factor-9 (GDF-9), bone morphogenetic protein-15 (BMP-15), and anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) proteins were semi-quantified by Western blotting and microRNAs 20a_1, 145_1, 320a_1, 125-b-5p, 212-3p, and 199_a by qPCR in FF samples from women submitted to ART with a previous diagnosis of endometriosis (n = 20) or male factor infertility (controls) (n = 44). An increase in GDF-9 and BMP-15 and a decrease in AMH mature protein were observed, as well as an increase in miR20a_1 (p = 0.04), miR145_1 (p = 0.003), and miR320a_1 (p = 0.006) in FF samples collected from women with endometriosis compared with controls. A reduction was observed in miR125b-5p (p = 0.004) and 212-3p (p = 0.02) in endometriosis. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis indicated that miR125b-5p, miR212-3p, and miR-145_1 are potential predictors of endometriosis, and miR145_1 and miR320a_1 of biochemical pregnancy in controls. Although limited by a small sample size, the current study demonstrated alterations in AMH, BMP-15, GDF-9, and specific miRNA levels in FF samples harvested from women with endometriosis, emphasizing their potential roles in endometriosis-related infertility. These microRNAs, dysregulated in women with endometriosis, unveil their biomarker properties and their predictive value for ART success. Full article

This paper addresses attention to iconographical expressions in the Northern Tradition rock art of Scandinavia that have received limited awareness. Yet, as it will be demonstrated, this iconography contains valuable insights into past ideas and concepts. This study also examines the background for the production of Northern Tradition rock art. Recent dialectic procedures within prehistoric rock art research and studies of archaeological remains, including multidisciplinary methods, dating measures, and demographic analyses, have contextualised Northern Tradition rock art into a more defined reconstructed past social context, at least regarding Western Norway. This has further connected the rock art to demographic changes at the end of the Late Mesolithic period. It is argued that this demographic development triggered the production of rock art, allowing a deeper insight into past world views through iconographical visualisations. Based on this background, it is also argued that the imagery of the Northern Tradition reflects past societal conditions and work as a proxy for insight into Late Mesolithic world views. Full article

This paper examines how 360-degree panoramic tours can enhance heritage promotion, accessibility, and engagement, illustrated through two case studies: the Understory Art and Nature Trail in Northcliffe and the Subiaco Hotel in Perth, Western Australia. The Understory Art Trail was deployed in Google Street View to deliver an interactive, virtual walkthrough of outdoor art installations. This made the site accessible to a geographically diverse global audience, including those unable to visit in person. In contrast, the Subiaco Hotel tour was created with 3DVista. It integrated multimedia features such as historical photographs, architectural drawings, and narrative audio, offering users a layered exploration of built heritage. The two studies were designed so that frameworks like Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) could be applied to them to evaluate visitor experience. However, this paper focuses on the workflow for providing 360-degree panoramic tours, the integration of AR, low-cost digital twins, and the testing of interactive web platforms. Google Street View demonstrates ease of use through familiar navigation, while 3DVista reflects usefulness through its richer interpretive features. By analyzing workflows and digital strategies on both platforms, the study evaluates their effectiveness in increasing online visitor engagement, supporting heritage tourism, and communicating cultural significance. Challenges related to technical limitations, geolocation accuracy, audience targeting, and resource constraints are critically discussed. The findings demonstrate that context-sensitive applications of 360-degree tours are valuable for visibility, education, and long-term preservation. The paper concludes with targeted recommendations to guide future heritage projects in leveraging immersive digital technologies to expand audience engagement and support sustainable heritage management.
