Optimisation of the anti-skid properties of tyres is a significant area of composite applications. For investigating the wet slip friction characteristics, the wet slip friction test of tread rubber and road surface was carried out using the comprehensive tire friction testing machine. The wet slip properties of different formulated rubbers under various working conditions such as different slip speeds, water film thicknesses and vertical loads were compared through the test. Subsequently, an orthogonal test programme was designed to investigate the degree of significant influence of each factor on the wet slip performance. A three-dimensional finite element model of tread rubber and road surface with water film was established in order to facilitate analysis of the wet slip properties. The simulation results were utilised to elucidate the pattern of the effects of different loads on the wet slip friction characteristics. Results indicate that the wet slip friction coefficient is subject to decrease in proportion to the magnitude of the vertical load; the friction coefficient of rubber block in wet slip condition exhibits a decline of approximately 26% in comparison with that of dry condition; the factor that exerts the most significant influence on the coefficient of friction is the vertical load, while the water film thickness exerts the least influence. The results obtained can serve as a reference source for the design of tire anti-skid performance enhancement. Full article

The Ouarzazate Group in the Anti-Atlas Belt of southern Morocco, part of the West African Craton (WAC), is a significant Proterozoic lithostratigraphic unit formed during the late Ediacaran period. It includes extensive volcanic rocks associated with the early stages of Iapetus Ocean opening. Zircon U-Pb dating and geochemical analyses of the Oued Dar’a Caldera (ODC) volcanic succession in the Saghro Massif reveal two major eruptive cycles corresponding to the lower and upper Ouarzazate Group. The 1st cycle (588–563 Ma) includes pre- and syn-caldera volcanic succession characterized by basaltic andesite to rhyolitic rocks, formed in a volcanic arc setting through lithospheric mantle-derived mafic magmatism and crustal melting. A major caldera-forming eruption occurred approximately 571–562 Ma, with associated rhyolitic dyke swarms indicating a larger caldera extent than previously known. The 2nd cycle (561–543 Ma) features post-caldera bimodal volcanism, with tholeiitic basalts and intraplate felsic magmas, signaling a shift to continental flood basalts and silicic volcanic systems. The entire volcanic activity spans approximately 23–40 million years. This succession is linked to late Ediacaran intracontinental super-eruptions tied to orogenic collapse and continental extension, likely in association with the Central Iapetus Magmatic Province (CIMP), marking a significant transition in the geodynamic evolution of the WAC. Basketball requires intense movements like jumping and sudden changes in direction, increasing the risk of slips and falls due to poor shoe–court traction. Therefore, a significant demand is for good traction performance in basketball shoes, particularly in the heel region on different court surfaces, to prevent slipping. This study examined the traction performance of fifteen common basketball shoe designs that were considered and developed using thermoplastic polyurethane to assess the available coefficient of friction (ACOF) on popular floorings (hardwood, synthetic, and polyurethane) under dry and wet conditions using a robotic slip tester. Results indicate that the hardwood flooring provided better traction, followed by the synthetic flooring, while the polyurethane flooring showed reduced friction. The study also examined the traction with apparent contact areas. Shoes with herringbone and circular tread patterns demonstrated the highest traction on all flooring in dry conditions. This research is anticipated to help basketball shoemakers choose safer shoes for player safety and performance, providing a foundation for future research on shoe flooring interaction in basketball. This study introduces a new method for modeling the nonlinear behavior of adhesively bonded composite steel–concrete T-beam systems. The model characterizes the interfacial behavior between the steel beam and the concrete slab using a strain compatibility approach within the framework of linear elasticity. It captures the nonlinear distribution of shear stresses over the entire depth of the composite section, making it applicable to various material combinations. The approach accounts for both continuous and discontinuous bonding conditions at the bonded steel–concrete interface. The analysis focuses on the top flange of the steel section, using a T-beam configuration commonly employed in bridge construction. This configuration stabilizes slab sliding, making the composite beam rigid, strong, and resistant to deformation. The numerical results demonstrate the advantages of the proposed solution over existing steel beam models and highlight key characteristics at the steel–concrete interface. The theoretical predictions are validated through comparison with existing analytical and experimental results, as well as finite element models, confirming the model’s accuracy and offering a deeper understanding of critical design parameters. The comparison shows excellent agreement between analytical predictions and finite element simulations, with discrepancies ranging from 1.7% to 4%. This research contributes to a better understanding of the mechanical behavior at the interface and supports the design of hybrid steel–concrete structures. Full article

Cavitation-induced degradation of metallic materials presents a significant challenge for engineers and users of equipment operating with high-velocity fluids. For any metallic material, the mechanical strength and ductility characteristics are controlled by the mobility of dislocations and their interaction with other defects in the crystal lattice (such as dissolved foreign atoms, grain boundaries, phase separation surfaces, etc.). The increase in mechanical properties, and consequently the resistance to cavitation erosion, is possible through the application of heat treatments and cold plastic deformation processes. These factors induce a series of hardening mechanisms that create structural barriers limiting the mobility of dislocations. Cavitation tests involve exposing a specimen to repeated short-duration erosion cycles, followed by mass loss measurements and surface morphology examinations using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results obtained allow for a detailed study of the actual wear processes affecting the tested material and provide a solid foundation for understanding the degradation mechanism. The tested material is the Ni-based alloy INCONEL 625, subjected to stress-relief annealing heat treatment. Experiments were conducted using an ultrasonic vibratory device operating at a frequency of 20 kHz and an amplitude of 50 µm. Microstructural analyses showed that slip bands formed due to shock wave impacts serve as preferential sites for fatigue failure of the material. Material removal occurs along these slip bands, and microjets result in pits with sizes of several micrometers. Full article

The paper presents an experimentally validated regression model for dry clutch friction lining wear, accounting for the influence of clutch temperature, initial slip speed, torque, and closing time. The experimental data have been collected by using a custom-designed disk-on-disk computer-controlled tribometer and conducting repetitive real operation-like clutch closing cycles for different levels of the above operating parameters. The model is designed to be cycle-wise, predicting cumulative worn volume expectation and standard deviation after each closing cycle. It is organized around three distinctive submodels, which provide predictions of: (i) wear rate expectation, (ii) wear rate variance, and (iii) elevated wear rate during run-in operation. Finally, the wear rate expectation and variance submodels and the overall, cumulative worn volume model are validated on independent experimental datasets. The main novelty of the presented research lies in the development of stochastic multi-input cycle-wise dry cutch wear model for clutch design and monitoring applications. Full article

Driven by stringent emission regulations, advanced combustion modes utilizing turbulent jet ignition technology are pivotal for enhancing the performance of marine low-speed natural gas dual-fuel engines. This review focuses on three novel combustion modes, yielding key conclusions: (1) Compared to the conventional DJCDC mode, the TJCDC mode exhibits a significantly higher swirl ratio and turbulence kinetic energy in the main chamber during initial combustion. This promotes natural gas jet development and combustion acceleration, leading to shorter ignition delay, reduced combustion duration, and a combustion center (CA50) positioned closer to the Top Dead Center (TDC), alongside higher peak cylinder pressure and a faster early heat release rate. Energetically, while TJCDC incurs higher heat transfer losses, it benefits from lower exhaust energy and irreversible exergy loss, indicating greater potential for useful work extraction, albeit with slightly higher indicated specific NOx emissions. (2) In the high-compression ratio TJCPC mode, the Liquid Pressurized Natural Gas (LPNG) injection parameters critically impact performance. Delaying the start of injection (SOI) or extending the injection duration degrades premixing uniformity and increases unburned methane (CH4) slip, with the duration effects showing a load dependency. Optimizing both the injection timing and duration is, therefore, essential for emission control. (3) Increasing the excess air ratio delays the combustion phasing in TJCPC (longer ignition delay, extended combustion duration, and retarded CA50). However, this shift positions the heat release more optimally relative to the TDC, resulting in significantly improved indicated thermal efficiency. This work provides a theoretical foundation for optimizing high-efficiency, low-emission combustion strategies in marine dual-fuel engines. Full article

The Moxi area in the Sichuan Basin hosts abundant deep geothermal resources, but their thermal regime and accumulation mechanisms remain poorly understood. Using 2D/3D seismic data, drilling records, and temperature measurements (DST), we analyze deep thermal fields, reservoir–caprock systems, and structural features. The following are our key findings: (1) Heat transfer is conduction-dominated, with thermal anomalies in Late Permian–Early Cambrian strata. Four mudstone/shale caprocks and three carbonate reservoirs occur, with the Longtan Formation as the key seal. Reservoir geothermal gradients (25.05–32.55 °C/km) exceed basin averages. (2) Transtensional strike-slip faults form E-W/NE/NW networks; most terminate at the Permian Longtan Formation, with few extending into the Lower Triassic while penetrating the Archean–Lower Proterozoic basement. (3) Structural highs positively correlate with higher geothermal gradients. (4) The deep geothermal reservoirs and thermal accumulation mechanisms in the Moxi area are jointly controlled by crustal thinning, basement uplift, and structural architecture. Mantle-derived heat converges at basement uplift cores, generating localized thermal anomalies. Fault networks connect these deep heat sources, facilitating upward fluid migration. Thick Longtan Formation shale seals these rising thermal fluids, causing anomalous heating in underlying strata and concentrated thermal accumulation in reservoirs—enhanced by thermal focusing effects from uplift structures. This study establishes a theoretical framework for target selection and industrial-scale geothermal exploitation in sedimentary basins, highlighting the potential for repurposing oil/gas infrastructure. We investigate how collisional interactions between the condensate and the thermal cloud influence the distinct dynamical regimes (Josephson plasma, phase-slip-induced dissipative regime, and macroscopic quantum self-trapping) emerging in ultracold atomic Josephson junctions at non-zero subcritical temperatures. Specifically, we discuss how the self-consistent dynamical inclusion of collisional processes facilitating the exchange of particles between the condensate and the thermal cloud impacts both the condensate and the thermal currents, demonstrating that their relative importance depends on the system’s dynamical regime. Our study is performed within the full context of the Zaremba–Nikuni–Griffin (ZNG) formalism, which couples a dissipative Gross–Pitaevskii equation for the condensate dynamics to a quantum Boltzmann equation with collisional terms for the thermal cloud. In the Josephson plasma oscillation and vortex-induced dissipative regimes, collisions markedly alter dynamics at intermediate-to-high temperatures, amplifying damping in the condensate imbalance mode and inducing measurable frequency shifts. In the self-trapping regime, collisions destabilize the system even at low temperatures, prompting a transition to Josephson-like dynamics on a temperature-dependent timescale. Our results show the interplay between coherence, dissipation, and thermal effects in a Bose–Einstein condensate at a finite temperature, providing a framework for tailoring Josephson junction dynamics in experimentally accessible regimes. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is increasingly used as a marine fuel due to its capacity to significantly reduce emissions of particulate matter, sulfur oxides (SOx), and nitrogen oxides (NOx), compared to conventional fuels. In addition, LNG combustion produces less carbon dioxide (CO2) than conventional marine fuels, and the use of non-fossil LNG offers further potential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. However, this benefit can be partially offset by methane slip—the release of unburned methane in engine exhaust—which has a much higher global warming potential than CO2. This study presents an experimental evaluation of methane emissions from a RoPax vessel powered by low-pressure dual-fuel four-stroke engines with a direct mechanical propulsion system. Methane slip was measured directly during onboard testing and combined with a year-long analysis of engine operation using an Engine Load Monitoring (ELM) method. The yearly average methane slip coefficient (Cslip) obtained was 1.57%, slightly lower than values reported in previous studies on cruise ships (1.7%), and significantly lower than the default values specified by the FuelEU (3.1%) Maritime regulation and IMO (3.5%) LCA guidelines. This result reflects the ship’s operational profile, characterized by long crossings at high and stable engine loads. This study provides results that could support more representative emission assessments and can contribute to ongoing regulatory discussions. Full article

Background: Current methods of postural control assessments and interventions to improve postural stability and thereby prevent falls often fail to incorporate the hazardous perturbation situations that frequently accompany falls. Virtual environments can safely incorporate these hazards. The purpose of the study was to identify if virtual slip and trip perturbations can be used as an exposure paradigm in place of real slip and trip perturbations to improve postural control. Methods: Fifteen healthy young adults were included in this study. Two paradigms, real gait exposure (real) and virtual environment gait exposure (virtual), consisting of real and virtual slip and trip trials, were performed by each participant in a counterbalanced order to avoid order effects. At baseline and following real and virtual paradigms, the modified clinical test for sensory integration and balance (mCTSIB), limits of stability (LOS), and single-leg stance (SLS) using BTracks balance plate were administered. Separate one-way (baseline vs. Real vs. Virtual) repeated measures analysis of variance were conducted on response variables. Results: In the posterior left quadrant of the LOS, significant differences were found after the real paradigm compared to baseline (p = 0.04). For the anterior left quadrant and total LOS, significant differences post real paradigm (p = 0.002 and p < 0.001) and virtual paradigm (p = 0.007 and p < 0.001) compared to baseline were observed. For the SLS, the left-leg significant differences were observed post real paradigm (p = 0.019) and virtual paradigm (p = 0.009) compared to BL in path length, while significant main effects were found for mean sway velocity for the left leg only (p = 0.004). For the right leg, significant differences were only observed after the virtual paradigm (p = 0.01) compared to BL. Conclusions: Both virtual and real paradigms were identified to improve postural control. The virtual paradigm led to increased postural control in the right-leg SLS condition, while the real paradigm did not, without any adverse effects. Findings suggest virtual reality perturbation exposure acutely improves postural control ability compared to baseline among healthy young adults. Full article

This paper presents a comprehensive study of torsional stick–slip vibrations in rotary drilling systems through a comparison between two lumped parameter models with differing complexity: a simple two-degree-of-freedom (2-DOF) model and a complex high-degree-of-freedom (high-DOF) model. The two models are developed under identical boundary conditions and consider an identical nonlinear friction torque dynamic involving the Stribeck effect and dry friction phenomena. The high-DOF model is calculated with the Finite Element Method (FEM) to enable accurate simulation of the dynamic behavior of the drill string and accurate representation of wave propagation, energy build-up, and torque response. Field data obtained from an Algerian oil well with Measurement While Drilling (MWD) equipment are used to guide modeling and determine simulations. According to the findings, the FEM-based high-DOF model demonstrates better performance in simulating basic stick–slip dynamics, such as drill bit velocity oscillation, nonlinear friction torque formation, and transient bit-to-surface contacts. On the other hand, the 2-DOF model is not able to represent these effects accurately and can lead to inappropriate control actions and mitigation of vibration severity. This study highlights the importance of robust model fidelity in building reliable real-time rotary drilling control systems. From the performance difference measurement between low-resolution and high-resolution models, the findings offer valuable insights to optimize drilling efficiency further, minimize non-productive time (NPT), and improve the rate of penetration (ROP). This contribution points to the need for using high-fidelity models, such as FEM-based models, in facilitating smart and adaptive well control strategies in modern petroleum drilling engineering. Differential Cortical Activations Among Young Adults Who Fall Versus Those Who Recover Successfully Following an Unexpected Slip During Walking

Background: Biomechanical and neuromuscular differences between falls and recoveries have been well-studied; however, the cortical correlations remain unclear. Using mobile brain imaging via electroencephalography (EEG), we examined differences in sensorimotor beta frequencies between falls and recoveries during an unpredicted slip in walking. Methods: We recruited 22 young adults (15 female; 18–35 years) who experienced a slip (65 cm) during walking. Raw EEG signals were band-pass filtered, and independent component analysis was performed to remove non-neural sources, eventually three participants were excluded due to excessive artifacts. Peak beta power was extracted from three time-bins: 400 milliseconds pre-, 0–150 milliseconds post and 150–300 milliseconds post-perturbation from the midline (Cz) electrode. A 2 × 3 Analysis of Covariance assessed the interaction between time-bins and group on beta power, followed by Independent and Paired t-tests for between and within-group post hoc comparisons. Results: All participants (n = 19) experienced a balance loss, seven experienced a fall. There was a time × group interaction on beta power (p < 0.05). With no group differences pre-perturbation, participants who experienced a fall exhibited higher beta power during 0–150 milliseconds post-perturbation than those who recovered (p < 0.001). However, there were no group differences in beta power during 150–300 milliseconds post-perturbation. Conclusions: Young adults exhibiting a greater increase in beta power during the early post-perturbation period experienced a fall, suggesting a higher cortical error detection due to a larger mismatch in the expected and ongoing postural state and greater cortical dependence for sensorimotor processing. Our study results provide an overview of the possible cortical governance to modulate slip-fall/recovery outcomes. Full article
