Environmental protection has become one of the key challenges of our time. This has led to an increase in pro-environmental activities in the field of cosmetics and household chemicals, where manufacturers are increasingly trying to meet the expectations of consumers who are aware of the potential risks associated with the production of cosmetics and household chemistry products. This is one of the most important challenges of today’s industry, given that some of the raw materials still commonly used, such as surfactants, may be toxic to aquatic organisms. Many companies are choosing to use natural raw materials that have satisfactory performance properties but are also environmentally friendly. In addition, modern products are also characterized by reduced consumption of water, resources, and energy in production processes. These measures reduce the carbon footprint and reduce the amount of plastic packaging required. In the present study, seven formulations of environmentally friendly car shampoo concentrates were developed, based entirely on mixtures of bio-based surfactants. The developed formulations were tested for application on the car body surface, allowing the selection of the two best products. For these selected formulations, an in-depth physicochemical analysis was carried out, including pH, density, and viscosity measurements. Comparison of the results with commercial products available on the market was also performed. Additionally, using the multiple light scattering method, the foamability and foam stability were determined for the car shampoos developed. The results obtained indicate the very high application potential of the products under study, which combine high performance and environmental concerns. Full article

The treatment of chronic wounds is one of the most complex therapeutic problems of modern medicine. It leads to patients’ protracted recovery, generating high treatment costs. Herbal products may be useful in the treatment of chronic wounds via a wide range of pharmacological properties and multidirectional effects on the wound healing phases. The study aims to determine the ability of selected plant extracts to modulate the processes involved in wound healing. The antimicrobial (MIC, MBC, MFC) and antioxidant (ABTS, DPPH) activities, cytotoxicity (MTT test), scratch wound test, and collagen assay were tested. R. canina (MBC 0.39 mg/mL) and V. venifera (MBC 3.13 mg/mL) extracts had bactericidal activities against P. aeruginosa and S. aureus, respectively. The V. vinifera extract showed the highest antioxidant activity in both ABTS (EC50 0.078 mg/mL) and DPPH (EC50 0.005 mg/mL) methods. The percentage of wound closure observed for C. cardunculus, R. rosea, and R. canina extracts with HaCaT, and V. vinifera extract with Hs27 cells was set as 100%. V. vinifera extract (50 μg/mL) stimulated collagen synthesis 5.16 times more strongly than ascorbic acid. Our preliminary study showed that some plant extracts may be promising modulators of the wound healing process, although further in-depth studies are necessary to determine their effectiveness in the in vivo model. Secondary lymphoma of the prostate is described as the involvement of the prostate gland by lymphomatous spread from a primary site. This condition is exceedingly rare and often presents diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. The symptoms often mimic those of benign prostatic hyperplasia or prostate cancer, including LUTS (lower urinary tract symptoms) and even complete urinary retention. Here, we present a rare case of a 62-year-old male patient undergoing chemotherapy for stage IV mantle cell stomach lymphoma and subsequently secondary prostatic involvement. The patient presented with complete urinary retention, accompanied by biochemical (PSA = 11.7 ng/mL) and imaging (Magnetic Resonance Imaging-PIRADS V lesion) suspicion for prostate cancer. Histopathologic analysis of the MRI-targeted prostate fusion biopsy revealed secondary prostatic lymphoma. The chosen treatment was transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR-P) for relief of symptoms, which significantly improved urinary function (postoperative IPSS = 5 and Qmax = 17 mL/s). This case underscores the importance of considering prostatic lymphoma in the differential diagnosis of bladder outlet obstruction, especially in patients with a known lymphoma history. This report also provides a focused review of the literature on secondary prostatic lymphoma, highlighting the diagnostic challenges, treatment options, and clinical outcomes. Full article

Background/Objectives: Aging is associated with a gradual decline in physical capabilities, often leading to impaired balance and reduced functional status, which are major contributors to falls in older adults. Although many studies have assessed these variables independently, a limited amount of research has explored the direct relationship between balance and functional status in a healthy geriatric population. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between balance and functional capacity and to assess the influence of demographic factors such as age, comorbidities, smoking status, and history of falls. Methods: A sample of community-dwelling older adults (19 women, 16 men) (n = 35), aged 60 years and above (M = 78 years; SD = 9.23) from Sparta, Greece, took part in the present study. Participants were assessed using three validated tools: (a) the Five Times Sit-to-Stand test, (b) the Timed Up-and-Go test, and (c) the Berg Balance Scale. Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient was used for statistical analysis (α = 0.05). Results: Age was positively correlated with poorer performance in the Five Times Sit-to-Stand (r = 0.40; p < 0.01) and the Timed Up-and-Go test (r = 0.47; p < 0.01) and negatively correlated with Berg Balance Scale scores (r = −0.51; p < 0.01). Comorbidities and smoking were also associated with the Berg Balance Scale. A strong negative correlation was observed between balance and the other two functional tests (Five Times Sit-to-Stand: r = −0.51; Timed Up-and-Go: r = −0.66; both p < 0.01). Conclusions: The findings highlight the importance of evaluating both balance and functional capacity in older adults as interrelated factors that can significantly influence quality of life and fall risk. Future research with larger and more diverse populations is recommended to confirm the present findings and to use exercise programs to prevent falls in the geriatric population. Full article

Background/Objectives: Pneumatic dilation (PD) is a widely used treatment modality in the management of achalasia. It is particularly relevant in regions where many centers lack access to advanced therapeutic modalities. Therefore, we aimed to assess the effectiveness and safety of PD in our local region. Methods: This study retrospectively analyzed patients with achalasia that underwent PD from 1/2013 to 12/2019. The diagnosis of achalasia was established on the grounds of clinical symptoms, radiological and endoscopic findings, and esophageal manometry. Data on patient’s clinical characteristics, dilation technique and postprocedural follow-up were collected and statistically analyzed. Procedure effectiveness was defined as the postprocedural Eckardt score ≤ 3. Results: PD significantly reduced frequency of dysphagia, regurgitation, and retrosternal pain (p < 0.001). Body-weight increased significantly one month and one year after the procedure (p < 0.001). The procedural success rate was 100%. No severe complications were reported. Conclusions: PD is an effective and safe treatment modality in the management of achalasia. The study limitations include a single center design with the small number of participants, not all of whom underwent manometry, gender disproportion, absence of non-responders, and a short follow-up. Parametric changes in the first coordination shell (FCS) of a vitreous metallic Pd42.5Cu30Ni7.5P20 alloy are analysed, aiming to confirm the identification of the glass transition temperature (Tg) via processing of XRD patterns utilising radial and pair distribution functions (RDFs and PDFs) and their evolution with temperature. The Wendt–Abraham empirical criterion of glass transition and its modifications are confirmed in line with previous works, which utilised the kink of the temperature dependences of the minima and maxima of both the PDF and the maxima of the structure factor S(q). Massive fluctuations are, however, identified near the Tg of the derivatives of the minima and maxima of the PDF and maxima of S(q), which adds value to understanding the glass transition in the system as a true second-order-like phase transformation in the non-equilibrium system of atoms. Museums play an essential role in preserving both cultural and natural heritage, safeguarding samples that offer invaluable insights into our history and scientific understanding. The integration of micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) has significantly advanced the study, restoration, and conservation of these priceless objects. This work explores the application of micro-CT across three critical areas of museum practice: sample virtualization, restoration assessment, and the analysis of fossil specimens. Specifically, micro-CT scanning was applied to fossils stored in the G.A.M.P.S. collection (Scandicci, Italy), enabling the creation of highly detailed non-invasive 3D models for digital archiving and virtual exhibitions. At the Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence, micro-CT was employed to evaluate fossil bone restoration treatments, focusing on the internal impact of menthol as a consolidant and its effects on the structural integrity of the material. Furthermore, micro-CT was utilized to investigate a sealed bee preserved in its cocoon within a paleosol in Costa Vicentina (Portugal), providing unprecedented insights into its internal anatomy and state of preservation, all while maintaining the integrity of the specimen. The results of this study underscore the versatility of micro-CT as a powerful non-destructive tool for advancing the fields of conservation, restoration, and scientific analysis of cultural and natural heritage. By integrating high-resolution imaging with both virtual and hands-on conservation strategies, micro-CT empowers museums to enhance research capabilities, improve preservation methodologies, and foster greater public engagement with their collections. In this study, we propose a bidirectional chemical sensor platform based on a reconfigurable ion-sensitive field-effect transistor (R-ISFET) architecture. The device incorporates Ni-silicide Schottky barrier source/drain (S/D) contacts, enabling ambipolar conduction and bidirectional turn-on behavior for both p-type and n-type configurations. Channel polarity is dynamically controlled via the program gate (PG), while the control gate (CG) suppresses leakage current, enhancing operational stability and energy efficiency. A dual-control-gate (DCG) structure enhances capacitive coupling, enabling sensitivity beyond the Nernst limit without external amplification. The extended-gate (EG) architecture physically separates the transistor and sensing regions, improving durability and long-term reliability. Electrical characteristics were evaluated through transfer and output curves, and carrier transport mechanisms were analyzed using band diagrams. Sensor performance—including sensitivity, hysteresis, and drift—was assessed under various pH conditions and external noise up to 5 Vpp (i.e., peak-to-peak voltage). The n-type configuration exhibited high mobility and fast response, while the p-type configuration demonstrated excellent noise immunity and low drift. Both modes showed consistent sensitivity trends, confirming the feasibility of complementary sensing. These results indicate that the proposed R-ISFET sensor enables selective mode switching for high sensitivity and robust operation, offering strong potential for next-generation biosensing and chemical detection. Effects of Different Phosphorus Addition Levels on Physiological and Growth Traits of Pinus massoniana (Masson Pine) Seedlings

Soil phosphorus (P) availability is an important determinant of productivity in Pinus massoniana (Masson pine) forests. The mechanistic bases governing the physiological and growth responses of Masson pine to varying soil P conditions remain insufficiently characterized. This study aims to decipher the adaptive strategies of Masson pine to different soil P levels, focusing on root morphological–architectural plasticity and the allocation dynamics of nutrient elements and photosynthetic assimilates. One-year-old potted Masson pine seedlings were exposed to four P addition treatments for one year: P0 (0 mg kg−1), P1 (25 mg kg−1), P2 (50 mg·kg−1), and P3 (100 mg kg−1). In July and December, measurements were conducted on seedling organ biomass, root morphological indices [root length (RL), root surface area (RSA), root diameter (RD), specific root length (SRL), and root length ratio (RLR) for each diameter grade], root architectural indices [number of root tips (RTs), fractal dimension (FD), root branching angle (RBA), and root topological index (TI)], as well as the content of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), carbon (C), and non-structural carbohydrates (NSCs) in roots, stems, and leaves. Compared with the P0 treatment, P2 and P3 significantly increased root biomass, root–shoot ratio, RL, RSA, RTs, RLR of finer roots (diameter ≤ 0.4 mm), nutrient accumulation ratio in roots, and starch (ST) content in roots, stems and leaves. Meanwhile, they decreased soluble sugar (SS) content, SS/ST ratio, C and N content, and N/P and C/P ratios in stems and leaves, as well as nutrient accumulation ratio in leaves. The P3 treatment significantly reduced RBA and increased FD and SRL. Our results indicated that Masson pine adapts to low P by developing shallower roots with a reduced branching intensity and promoting the conversion of ST to SS. P’s addition effectively alleviates growth limitations imposed by low P, stimulating root growth, branching, and gravitropism. Although a sole P addition promotes short-term growth and P uptake, it triggers a substantial consumption of N, C, and SS, leading to significant decreases in N/P and C/P ratios and exacerbating N’s limitation, which is detrimental to long-term growth. Under high-P conditions, Masson pine strategically prioritizes allocating limited N and SS to roots, facilitating the formation of thinner roots with low C costs. Full article

Background and Objectives: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) following pelvic osteotomy for developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is technically challenging due to altered acetabular morphology. This study aimed to compare radiographic cup position and perioperative characteristics of THA after three common pelvic osteotomies—periacetabular osteotomy (PAO), shelf procedure, and Chiari osteotomy—with primary THA in Crowe type I DDH. Methods: A retrospective review identified 25 hips that underwent conversion THA after pelvic osteotomy (PAO = 12, shelf = 8, Chiari = 5) and 25 primary THAs without prior osteotomy. One-to-one matching was performed based on sex (exact match), age (within 5 years), and BMI (within 2 kg/m2) without the use of propensity scores. Cup inclination, radiographic anteversion, center-edge (CE) angle, and cup height were measured on standardized anteroposterior radiographs (ICC = 0.91). Operative time, estimated blood loss, and use of bulk bone grafts or reinforcement rings were reviewed. One-way ANOVA with Dunnett’s post hoc test and chi-square test were used for statistical comparison. Results: Cup inclination, anteversion, and CE angle did not differ significantly among groups. Cup height was significantly greater in the PAO group than in controls (29.0 mm vs. 21.8 mm; p = 0.0075), indicating a more proximal hip center. The Chiari and shelf groups showed upward trends, though not significant. Mean operative time tended to be longer after PAO (123 min vs. 93 min; p = 0.078). Bulk bone grafts and reinforcement rings were more frequently required in the PAO group (17%; p = 0.036 vs. control), and occasionally in Chiari cases, but not in shelf or control groups. Conclusions: THA after PAO is associated with higher cup placement and greater need for reconstructive devices, indicating increased technical complexity. In contrast, shelf and Chiari conversions more closely resemble primary THA. Preoperative planning should consider hip center translation and bone-stock restoration in post-osteotomy THA. Methods: Amateur and professional singers consulting the European Reflux Clinic for laryngopharyngeal reflux disease (LPRD) symptoms and findings were prospectively recruited from January 2022 to February 2023. The diagnosis was based on a Reflux Symptom Score (RSS) > 13 and Reflux Sign Assessment (RSA) > 14. A control group of asymptomatic singer subjects was recruited from the University of Mons. The sRSS was rated within a 7-day period to assess test–retest reliability. Internal consistency was measured using Cronbach’s α in patients and controls. A correlation analysis was performed between sRSS and Singing Voice Handicap Index (sVHI) to evaluate convergent validity. Responsiveness to change was evaluated through pre- to post-treatment sRSS changes. The sRSS threshold for suggesting a significant impact of LPRD on singing voice was determined by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. Results: Thirty-three singers with suspected LPRD (51.5% female; mean age: 51.8 ± 17.2 years) were consecutively recruited. Difficulty reaching high notes and vocal fatigue were the most prevalent LPRD-related singing complaints. The sRSS demonstrated high internal consistency (Cronbach-α = 0.832), test–retest reliability, and external validity (correlation with sVHI: r = 0.654; p = 0.015). Singers with suspected LPRD reported a significant higher sRSS compared to 68 controls. sRSS item and total scores significantly reduced from pre-treatment to 3 months post-treatment except for the abnormal voice breathiness item. ROC analysis revealed superior diagnostic accuracy for sRSS (AUC = 0.971) compared to sRSS-quality of life (AUC = 0.926), with an optimal cutoff at sRSS > 38.5 (sensitivity: 90.3%; specificity: 85.0%). Conclusions: The sRSS is a reliable and valid singer-reported outcome questionnaire for documenting singing symptoms associated with LPRD leading to personalized management of Singers. Future large-cohort studies are needed to evaluate its specificity for LPRD compared to other vocal fold disorders in singers. Full article

Medication discrepancies at hospital admission are common and may lead to adverse outcomes. Medication reconciliation is a critical process for minimizing medication discrepancies and medication errors at the time of hospital admission. This study aimed to evaluate the role of clinical pharmacists in identifying pharmacotherapy-related issues upon patient admission in a low-resource setting. A prospective observational study was conducted at a university hospital between 1 March and 31 May 2023. Within 24 h of admission, a clinical pharmacist documented each patient’s pre-admission medication regimen and compared it with the medication history obtained by the admitting physician. Discrepancies and pharmacotherapy problems were subsequently identified. Among 65 patients, pharmacists documented 334 medications versus 189 recorded by physicians (p < 0.01). The clinical pharmacist identified 155 discrepancies, 112 (72.26%) of which were unintentional. The most frequent type was drug omission (91.07%), followed by incorrect dosage (4.46%), incorrect dosing interval (2.68%), and medications with unknown indications (1.79%). Most discrepancies were classified as errors without harm (53.57%), while 41.07% were potentially harmful. These findings underscore the importance of integrating clinical pharmacists into the healthcare team. Toothpaste is an essential oral hygiene product commonly used to sustain oral health due to its incorporation of antimicrobial agents. Numerous functional toothpastes enriched with antimicrobial agents have been developed and are available to consumers. This study evaluates the antimicrobial and antibiofilm efficacy of 12 commercially available toothpaste products, including those with specialized functions. Statistical significance was assessed to validate the differences observed among the toothpaste samples. Their effects on Streptococcus mutans, the primary pathogen responsible for dental caries, were evaluated. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) were determined, and bacterial growth was measured to compare antimicrobial activities. Toothpaste containing 1000 μg/mL fluoride and whitening toothpaste exhibited the strongest antimicrobial effects, effectively inhibiting S. mutans growth. Additionally, bamboo salt-enriched and tartar-control toothpaste demonstrated inhibitory effects on bacterial growth. Assays to evaluate the ability of cells to form biofilms and the expression of genes involved in biofilm formation revealed a partial correlation between biofilm formation and spaP, gtfB, gtfC, and gtfD expression, although some showed opposite trends. Collectively, this study provides valuable insights into the antimicrobial and biofilm inhibition capabilities of commercial toothpastes against S. mutans, offering a foundation for evaluating the efficacy of functional toothpaste products. The barbel chub (Squaliobarbus curriculus) exhibits remarkable resistance to grass carp reovirus (GCRV), a devastating pathogen in aquaculture. To reveal the molecular basis of this resistance, we investigated complement factor D (DF)—a rate-limiting serine protease governing alternative complement pathway activation. Molecular cloning revealed that the barbel chub DF (ScDF) gene encodes a 1251-bp cDNA sequence translating into a 250-amino acid protein. Crucially, bioinformatic characterization identified a unique N-glycosylation site at Asn139 in ScDF, representing a structural divergence absent in grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) DF (CiDF). While retaining a conserved Tryp_SPc domain harboring the catalytic triad (His61, Asp109, and Ser204) and substrate-binding residues (Asp198, Ser219, and Gly221), sequence and phylogenetic analyses confirmed ScDF’s evolutionary conservation, displaying 94.4% amino acid identity with CiDF and clustering within the Cyprinidae. Expression profiling revealed constitutive ScDF dominance in the liver, and secondary prominence was observed in the heart. Upon GCRV challenge in S. curriculus kidney (SCK) cells, ScDF transcription surged to a 438-fold increase versus uninfected controls at 6 h post-infection (hpi; p < 0.001)—significantly preceding the 168-hpi response peak documented for CiDF in grass carp. Functional validation showed that ScDF overexpression suppressed key viral capsid genes (VP2, VP5, and VP7) and upregulated the interferon regulator IRF9. Moreover, recombinant ScDF protein incubation induced interferon pathway genes and complement C3 expression. Collectively, ScDF’s rapid early induction (peaking at 6 hpi) and multi-pathway coordination may contribute to barbel chub’s GCRV resistance. These findings may provide molecular insights into the barbel chub’s high GCRV resistance compared to grass carp and novel perspectives for anti-GCRV breeding strategies in fish. Full article

Membranous nephropathy (MN) is the most prevalent cause of nephrotic syndrome (NS) in adults, and it can be primary (idiopathic) with an unknown cause or secondary due to a variety of conditions (lupus, infections, malignancies, medications, etc.). It progresses to chronic kidney disease (CKD) in up to 60% of patients, and 10 to 30% develop end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). This retrospective study examines the importance of specific factors, including baseline demographic and clinical data, kidney biopsy PH findings, and selected biochemical parameters, influencing MN outcomes after 10 years of follow-up. The cohort included 94 individuals in whom a diagnosis of MN was established by percutaneous biopsy of the left kidney’s lower pole at the University Clinical Center of Serbia (UCCS) between 2008 and 2013. According to the outcomes, patients were divided into three groups: the recovery (Rec) group, with complete remission, including normal serum creatinine (Scr) and proteinuria (Prt), the group with development of chronic kidney disease (CKD), and the group with development of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). Nephropathologists graded pathohistological (PH) results from I to III based on the observed PH findings. During the follow-up period, 33 patients were in the Rec group, CKD developed in 53 patients, and ESKD developed in 8 patients. Baseline creatinine clearance levels (Ccr), Scr, and uric acid (urate) were found to be significantly associated with the outcomes (p < 0.001). The lowest values of baseline Scr and urate were observed in the Rec group. The presence of acute kidney injury (AKI) or CKD at the time of kidney biopsy was associated with the more frequent development of ESKD (p = 0.02). Lower Ccr was associated with a higher likelihood of progressing to CKD (B = −0.021, p = 0.014), whereas older age independently predicted progression to ESKD (B = 0.02, p = 0.032). Based on this study, it was concluded that the most important biochemical and clinical factors that are associated with the outcomes of this disease are the values of Scr, Ccr, and urate and the existence of CKD at the time of kidney biopsy. Unlike most previous studies, the presence of HTN had no statistical significance in the outcome of the disease. Full article
