This article examines the significant contributions of Helga de Alvear as a gallerist, collector, and patron, a pivotal figure in the evolution of the Spanish and international contemporary art market. Her legacy is particularly notable through the establishment of the Helga de Alvear Museum in the city of Cáceres, intended to share her vast collection of over 3000 works and foster exhibition, research, conservation, and education. The study analyzes her art collection, highlighting its substantial international minimalist art component, contextualizing its development with her personal and professional journey. Furthermore, it explores the institutionalization of her legacy, from the Helga de Alvear Foundation to the creation and evolution of the museum, its innovative architecture and museography, and its impact on Cáceres’s urban landscape. Patent Licensing Strategy for Supply Chain Reshaping Under Sudden Disruptive Events

Supply chains are increasingly exposed to sudden disruptive events (SDEs) such as natural disasters and trade wars. We develop a multi-stage game-theoretical model to investigate a novel coping mechanism: when a firm is forced to exit the market because of SDEs, the firm can regain profits by licensing its proprietary production tech to a competitor. We find that, compared with the scenario before SDEs, such events can even increase the profit of each manufacturer under certain conditions. Under certain conditions, the cooperative strategy (i.e., supply chain reshaping) yields a higher supply chain system profit than the non-cooperative strategy. After SDEs, the common manufacturer may either accept or reject cooperation, depending on the customer transfer rate and the cooperation cost. Notably, under the cooperation strategy, the high-tech manufacturer extracts part of the common manufacturer’s profit through patent licensing, and the existence of cooperation cost further contributes to a misalignment between the common manufacturer’s optimal decision and the supply chain system optimum. These findings contribute to the literature by identifying a novel supply chain reshaping mechanism driven by patent licensing and offer strategic guidance for firms and policymakers navigating SDE-induced market exits. Background and Aim: Long-term treatment with biologic therapy alongside immunomAfodulators in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) can be associated with severe side effects. The objective of this study was to determine whether discontinuing anti-TNF treatment after two years in patients who have achieved mucosal healing is associated with lower relapse rates. Materials and Methods: A total of 67 patients with IBD from a single tertiary IBD Center who had achieved mucosal healing were enrolled in this retrospective study. In this single-center retrospective study (January 2014–December 2022), we screened 67 IBD patients in deep remission (endoscopic mucosal healing after ≥2 years of anti-TNF therapy). After excluding three patients without histologic data, 64 patients (25 ulcerative colitis, 39 Crohn’s disease) were analyzed. Mayo endoscopic sub-score and SES-CD were used to evaluate endoscopic activity after two years of anti-TNF therapy. Histological activity was assessed using the GHAS (for CD) and Nancy index (for UC). Results: A total of 67 patients were screened, of whom 3 were excluded due to a lack of biopsies. Of the 64 included patients, 39.06% (25/64) had UC and 60.9% (39/64) had CD, with a mean disease duration of 11.6 ± 8.0 years. All patients were in endoscopic remission at the time of therapy de-escalation, and 60.9% (39/64) also achieved histological remission (“deep remission”). In the follow-up of 38.6 months (IQR 30–48) after biologic therapy was stopped, 57.8% (37/64) relapsed with a median time to relapse of 13.5 months (IQR 8–24) off anti-TNF—a total of 34 patients required a restarting of biologic therapy. Using Spearman’s correlation, a moderate connection was observed between histological activity at withdrawal and subsequent relapse (rho = 0.467, p < 0.001). The probability of relapsing within 4 years after anti-TNF cessation was significantly higher (OR 2.72) in patients with histologically active disease at the time of de-escalation. Conclusions: Achieving ‘deep remission’ (clinical, endoscopic, and histological healing) may be a suitable parameter for making decisions on when to de-escalate therapy; however, given that over half of patients in endoscopic remission relapse after discontinuation, any de-escalation should be approached with caution and individualized patient assessment. Background/Objectives: Virtual non-contrast (VNC) images derived from dual-energy CTA (DE-CTA) could potentially replace true non-contrast (TNC) scans while reducing radiation exposure. This study evaluated the image quality of VNC compared to TNC for assessing native arteries and bypass grafts in patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 175 patients (111 men, 64 women, mean age: 69.3 ± 9.5 years) with PAD who underwent lower extremity DE-CTA. Mean attenuation and image noise values of TNC and VNC images were measured in native arteries and bypass grafts at six arterial levels, from the aorta to the popliteal arteries, using circular regions of interest (ROI). Signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) and contrast-to-noise ratios (CNRs) were calculated. Three independent radiologists evaluated the subjective image quality of VNC images compared to baseline TNC scans for overall quality (4-point Likert scale), and for residual contrast medium (CM), calcium subtractions, and bypass graft visualization (3-point Likert scales). Radiation dose parameters (DLP, CTDIvol) were recorded to estimate effective dose values (ED) and the potential radiation dose reduction. Differences between TNC and VNC measurements and radiation dose parameters were compared using a paired t-test. Interobserver agreement was assessed with Gwet’s AC2. Results: VNC attenuation and noise values were significantly lower across all native arterial levels (p < 0.05, mean difference: 4.7 HU–10.8 HU) and generally lower at all bypass regions (mean difference: 2.2 HU–13.8 HU). Mean image quality scores were 3.03 (overall quality), 2.99 (residual contrast), 2.04 (subtracted calcifications), and 3.0 (graft visualization). Inter-reader agreement was excellent for each assessment (AC2 ≥ 0.81). The estimated radiation dose reduction was 36.8% (p < 0.0001). Conclusions: VNC reconstructions demonstrated comparable image quality to TNC in a PAD assessment and offer substantial radiation dose reduction, supporting their potential as a promising alternative in clinical practice. Further prospective studies and optimization of reconstruction algorithms remain essential to confirm diagnostic accuracy and address remaining technical limitations. Full article

Conical screw compressors are equipment used to compress air or other gases, using a mechanism consisting of two conically shaped rotors (screws), which rotate one inside the other. This specific design offers advantages in terms of its efficiency, durability and compactness. These compressors are characterized by high efficiency, efficient compression, low air loss, durability, compact dimensions and silent operation. In conical screw compressors, the screw axes are arranged at an angle, due to the conical shape of the screws. This arrangement allows for the progressive compression of the gas as it advances along the screws. On the one hand, the arrangement of the axes and the conical shape of the screws contribute significantly to the high performance of this type of compressor, but on the other hand, this shape makes it difficult to profile these active elements. The screw profiles of conical screw compressors are mutually enveloping, and this aspect is essential for the correct operation of the compressor. In this paper, a new algorithm for profiling the compressor’s external rotor starting from a known internal rotor shape is proposed. The proposed algorithm was developed at “Dunarea de Jos” University of Galati and was based on the observation that the compression chambers in conical screw compressors are sealed according to a curve that follows the axial section of the two screws, in a plane determined by their axes. Practically, the two screws admit a common contour of the axial section in the plane determined by their axes. Taking this aspect into account, the transverse profile of the outer screw can be determined by identifying the positions where contact will take place with the points belonging to the transverse profile of the inner screw. In order to verify the viability of this method, the volume occupied by the inner screw during its relative movement with respect to the outer screw was determined. This volume was compared with the volume of the outer rotor cavity, with the result demonstrating the identity of the two volumes. Full article

This study presents an algorithm for non-invasive blood pressure (BP) estimation in neonates using photoplethysmography (PPG), suitable for resource-constrained neonatal telecare platforms. Using the Windkessel model, the algorithm processes PPG signals from a MAX 30102 sensor, (Analog Devices (formerly Maxim Integrated), based in San Jose, CA, USA) filtering motion noise and extracting cardiac cycle time and systolic time (ST). These parameters inform a derived blood flow signal, the input for the Windkessel model. Calibration utilizes average parameters based on the newborn’s post-conceptional age, weight, and gestational age. Performance was validated against readings from a standard non-invasive BP cuff at SES Hospital Universitario de Caldas. Two parameter estimation methods were evaluated. The first yielded root mean square errors (RMSEs) of 24.14 mmHg for systolic and 19.13 mmHg for diastolic BP. The second method significantly improved accuracy, achieving RMSEs of 2.31 mmHg and 5.13 mmHg, respectively. The successful adaptation of the Windkessel model to single PPG signals allows for BP calculation alongside other physiological variables within the telecare program. A device analysis was conducted to determine the appropriate device based on computational capacity, availability of programming tools, and ease of integration within an Internet of Things environment. This study paves the way for future research that focuses on parameter variations due to cardiovascular changes in newborns during their first month of life. Full article

Zinc finger proteins are frequently implicated in a wide range of neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs). In this study, we report a case of mild intellectual disability (ID), global developmental delay (GDD), and developmental coordination disorder (DCD) in an individual with unaffected parents. Trio-based whole-exome sequencing (WES) identified a de novo variant (c.1530dup, p.Glu511ArgfsTer16) in the ZNF496 gene of the proband. According to ACMG guidelines, this novel variant is classified as pathogenic. It creates a frameshift that introduces a premature stop codon, resulting in a truncated protein of 525 amino acids (compared to the wild-type 587 residues). Notably, NMDEscPredictor analysis predicted that the transcript escapes nonsense-mediated decay (NMD) despite the frameshift. Computational analyses suggest the potential pathogenetic effects of the identified variant. As documented, ZNF496 interacts with JARID2, a gene associated with NDDs, ID and facial dysmorphism (MIM: #620098). In silico analyses suggest that the identified mutation disrupts this interaction by deleting ZNF496’s C2H2 domain, potentially dysregulating JARID2 target genes. To our knowledge, this is the first reported association between ZNF496 and NDDs, and the variant has been submitted to the ClinVar database (SCV006100880). Functional studies are imperative to validate ZNF496’s role in NDDs and confirm the mutation’s impact on ZNF496-JARID2 interactions. Full article

Skeletal muscle development is a critical economic trait in livestock, governed by myogenic satellite cell regulation. Integrins mediate mechanical anchorage to the ECM and enable ECM–intracellular signaling. CIB2, as an EF-hand-domain protein involved in mechanotransduction, shows significant developmental regulation in goat muscle. Although the role of CIB2 in skeletal muscle growth is poorly characterized, we observed pronounced developmental upregulation of IB2 in postnatal goat muscle. CIB2 expression increased >20-fold by postnatal day 90 (P90) compared to P1, sustaining elevation through P180 (p < 0.05). Functional investigations indicated that siRNA-mediated knockdown of CIB2 could inhibit myoblast proliferation by inducing S-phase arrest (p < 0.05) and downregulating the expression of CDK4/Cyclin D/E. Simultaneously, CIB2 interference treatment was found to decrease the proliferative activity of goat myogenic satellite cells, yet it significantly promoted differentiation by upregulating the expression of MyoD/MyoG/MyHC (p < 0.01). Mechanistically, CTCF was identified as a transcriptional repressor binding to an intragenic region of the CIB2 gene locus (ChIP enrichment: 2.3-fold, p < 0.05). Knockdown of CTCF induced upregulation of CIB2 (p < 0.05). RNA-seq analysis established CIB2 as a calcium signaling hub: its interference activated IL-17/TNF and complement cascades, while overexpression suppressed focal adhesion/ECM–receptor interactions and enriched neuroendocrine pathways. Collectively, this study identifies the CTCF-CIB2–integrin α7β1–PI3K/AKT axis as a novel molecular mechanism that regulates the balance of myogenic fate in goats. These findings offer promising targets for genomic selection and precision breeding strategies aimed at enhancing muscle productivity in ruminants. Full article

Implementing nature-based solutions (NbSs) for wildfire risk management and other hazards has been challenging in emerging economies due to the high costs, the lack of immediate returns on investment, and stringent inclusion criteria set by organizations like the IUCN and domain experts. To address these challenges, this exploratory study proposes a new concept: green/blue initiatives. These initiatives represent intermediate steps, encompassing small-scale, community-driven activities that can evolve into recognized NbSs over time. To explore this concept, experiences related to wildfire prevention in the Biobío region of Chile were analyzed through primary and secondary source reviews. The analysis identified three initiatives qualifying as green/blue initiatives: (1) goat grazing in Santa Juana to reduce fuel loads, (2) a restoration prevention farm model in Florida called Faro de Restauración Mahuidanche and (3) the Conservation Landscape Strategy in Nonguén. They were examined in detail using data collected from site visits and interviews. In contrast to Chile’s prevailing wildfire policies, which focus on costly, large-scale fire suppression efforts, these initiatives emphasize the importance of reframing wildfire as a manageable ecological process. Lastly, the challenges and enabling factors for adopting green/blue initiatives are discussed, highlighting their potential to pave the way for future NbS implementation in central Chile. Electromagnetic pneumatic microvalves, widely used in knitting machines, typically operate based on a spring-return mechanism. When the coil is energized, the electromagnetic force overcomes the spring force to attract the armature, opening the valve. Upon de-energization, the armature returns to its original position under the restoring force of the spring, closing the valve. However, most existing electromagnetic microvalves adopt a radially asymmetric magnetic yoke design, which generates additional radial forces during operation, leading to armature misalignment or even sticking. Additionally, the inductance effect of the coil causes a significant delay in the armature release response, making it difficult to meet the knitting machine’s requirements for rapid response and high reliability. To address these issues, this paper proposes an improved electromagnetic microvalve design. First, the magnetic yoke structure is modified to be radially symmetric, eliminating unnecessary radial forces and preventing armature sticking during operation. Second, a permanent magnet assist mechanism is introduced at the armature release end to enhance release speed and reduce delays caused by the inductance effect. The effectiveness of the proposed design is validated through electromagnetic numerical simulations, and a multi-objective genetic algorithm is further employed to optimize the geometric dimensions of the electromagnet. The optimization results indicate that, while maintaining the fundamental power supply principle of conventional designs, the new microvalve structure achieves a pull-in time comparable to traditional designs during engagement but significantly reduces the release response time by approximately 80.2%, effectively preventing armature sticking due to radial forces. The findings of this study provide a feasible and efficient technical solution for the design of electromagnetic microvalves in textile machinery applications. Full article

This study presents a comprehensive inventory of bryophytes in Serra dos Órgãos National Park (PARNASO), aiming to evaluate species richness, floristic composition and threatened taxa. Despite the state of Rio de Janeiro being one of the most extensively sampled regions for bryophytes in Brazil, detailed surveys of its conservation units remain scarce. Data were obtained through bibliographic review, herbarium specimen analysis, and new field collections. A total of 504 species were recorded, belonging to 202 genera and 76 families. The park harbors three locally endemic species, eight endemic to Rio de Janeiro, and sixty-nine species endemic to Brazil. Additionally, eleven species were identified as threatened, comprising seven Endangered (EN), two Critically Endangered (CR), and two Vulnerable (VU) according to the IUCN guidelines. PARNASO includes four distinct ecosystems along an altitudinal gradient: sub-montane forest (up to 500 m), montane forest (500–1500 m), upper-montane forest (1500–2000 m), and high-altitude fields (above 2000 m). Montane Forest showed the highest species richness, followed by high-altitude fields, upper-montane forest, and sub-montane forest. The findings highlight PARNASO’s importance in preserving bryophyte diversity in a highly diverse yet understudied region. This work contributes valuable baseline data to support conservation strategies and future ecological studies in Atlantic Forest remnants. Full article

Acacia mearnsii De Wild. has been introduced to over 150 countries for its economic value. However, it easily escapes from plantations and establishes monospecific stands across plains, hills, valleys, and riparian habitats, including protected areas such as national parks and forest reserves. Due to its negative ecological impact, A. mearnsii has been listed among the world’s 100 worst invasive alien species. This species exhibits rapid stem growth in its sapling stage and reaches reproductive maturity early. It produces a large quantity of long-lived seeds, establishing a substantial seed bank. A. mearnsii can grow in different environmental conditions and tolerates various adverse conditions, such as low temperatures and drought. Its invasive populations are unlikely to be seriously damaged by herbivores and pathogens. Additionally, A. mearnsii exhibits allelopathic activity, though its ecological significance remains unclear. These characteristics of A. mearnsii may contribute to its expansion in introduced ranges. The presence of A. mearnsii affects abiotic processes in ecosystems by reducing water availability, increasing the risk of soil erosion and flooding, altering soil chemical composition, and obstructing solar light irradiation. The invasion negatively affects biotic processes as well, reducing the diversity and abundance of native plants and arthropods, including protective species. Eradicating invasive populations of A. mearnsii requires an integrated, long-term management approach based on an understanding of its invasive mechanisms. Early detection of invasive populations and the promotion of public awareness about their impact are also important. More attention must be given to its invasive traits because it easily escapes from cultivation. Full article

This article examines training itineraries for early childhood education professionals in Portugal, focusing on promoting social and human development through music and the arts for infants. The training models discussed are categorized as short-term and long-term, encompassing both theory and practice through a transdisciplinary approach. Based on initiatives promoted by the Companhia de Música Teatral (CMT) and the Education and Human Development Group of the Centre for the Study of Sociology and Musical Aesthetics (CESEM) at NOVA University Lisbon, the article highlights projects such as: (i) Opus Tutti and GermInArte, developed between 2011 and 2018; (ii) the Postgraduate Course Music in Childhood: Intervention and Research, offered at the University since 2020/21, which integrates art, health, and education, promoting collaborative work between professionals; and (iii) Mil Pássaros (Thousand Birds), developed since 2020, which exemplifies the integration of environmental education and artistic practices. The theoretical basis of these training programs combines neuroscientific and educational evidence, emphasizing the importance of the first years of life for integral development. Studies, such as those by Heckman, reinforce the impact of early investment in children’s development. Edwin Gordon’s Music Learning Theory and Malloch and Trevarthen’s concept of ‘communicative musicality’ structure the design of these courses, recognizing music as a catalyst for cognitive, emotional, and social skills. The transformative role of music and the arts in educational and social contexts is emphasized, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda, by proposing approaches that articulate creation, intervention, and research to promote human development from childhood onwards. SMART DShot: Secure Machine-Learning-Based Adaptive Real-Time Timing Correction

The exponential growth of autonomous systems demands robust security mechanisms that can operate within the extreme constraints of real-time embedded environments. This paper introduces SMART DShot, a groundbreaking machine learning-enhanced framework that transforms the security landscape of unmanned aerial vehicle motor control systems through seamless integration of adaptive timing correction and real-time anomaly detection within Digital Shot (DShot) communication protocols. Our approach addresses critical vulnerabilities in Electronic Speed Controller (ESC) interfaces by deploying four synergistic algorithms—Kalman Filter Timing Correction (KFTC), Recursive Least Squares Timing Correction (RLSTC), Fuzzy Logic Timing Correction (FLTC), and Hybrid Adaptive Timing Correction (HATC)—each optimized for specific error characteristics and attack scenarios. Through comprehensive evaluation encompassing 32,000 Monte Carlo test iterations (500 per scenario × 16 scenarios × 4 algorithms) across 16 distinct operational scenarios and PolarFire SoC Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) implementation, we demonstrate exceptional performance with 88.3% attack detection rate, only 2.3% false positive incidence, and substantial vulnerability mitigation reducing Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) severity from High (7.3) to Low (3.1). Hardware validation on PolarFire SoC confirms practical viability with minimal resource overhead (2.16% Look-Up Table utilization, 16.57 mW per channel) and deterministic sub-10 microsecond execution latency. The Hybrid Adaptive Timing Correction algorithm achieves 31.01% success rate (95% CI: [30.2%, 31.8%]), representing a 26.5% improvement over baseline approaches through intelligent meta-learning-based algorithm selection. Statistical validation using Analysis of Variance confirms significant performance differences (F(3,1996) = 30.30, p < 0.001) with large effect sizes (Cohen’s d up to 4.57), where 64.6% of algorithm comparisons showed large practical significance. SMART DShot establishes a paradigmatic shift from reactive to proactive embedded security, demonstrating that sophisticated artificial intelligence can operate effectively within microsecond-scale real-time constraints while providing comprehensive protection against timing manipulation, de-synchronization, burst interference, replay attacks, coordinated multi-channel attacks, and firmware-level compromises. This work provides essential foundations for trustworthy autonomous systems across critical domains including aerospace, automotive, industrial automation, and cyber–physical infrastructure. These results conclusively demonstrate that ML-enhanced motor control systems can achieve both superior security (88.3% attack detection rate with 2.3% false positives) and operational performance (31.01% timing correction success rate, 26.5% improvement over baseline) simultaneously, establishing SMART DShot as a practical, deployable solution for next-generation autonomous systems. Severe polysulfide shuttling and sluggish redox kinetics critically hinder lithium–sulfur (Li-S) battery commercialization. In this study, a multifunctional diatomite (DE)/TiO2/MoS2/N-doped carbon nanofiber (NCNF) composite separator was fabricated via hydrothermal synthesis, electrospinning, and carbonization. DE provides dual polysulfide suppression, encompassing microporous confinement and electrostatic repulsion. By integrating synergistic catalytic effects from TiO2 and MoS2 nanoparticles, which accelerate polysulfide conversion, and conductive NCNF networks, which facilitate rapid charge transfer, this hierarchical design achieves exceptional electrochemical performance: a 1245.6 mAh g−1 initial capacity at 0.5 C and 65.94% retention after 200 cycles. This work presents a rational multi-component engineering strategy to suppress shuttle effects in high-energy-density Li-S batteries. Full article
