The Role of Vitamin K Deficiency in Chronic Kidney Disease—A Scoping Review

Background/objectives: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects up to 15% of the global population and is driven by vascular and interstitial damage, and is most prevalent in persons with hypertension and diabetes. Vitamin K, a necessary cofactor for activation of vitamin K-dependent proteins may modulate these processes. It is well established that vitamin K deficiency is associated with CKD, but the therapeutic effects of supplementation on kidney function are still uncertain. We aimed to review the current evidence on the effect of vitamin K deficiency and supplementation on any marker of renal function and kidney disease, across general adult populations and CKD patient populations. Methods: A search was conducted in PubMed, targeting terms related to vitamin K status and CKD. Studies were included if they reported data on vitamin K status or supplementation in relation to kidney function outcomes. Results: A total of 16 studies were included. Nine interventional studies were included and confirmed that vitamin K supplementation improves biomarkers of vitamin K status but showed no consistent beneficial effects on renal function. Seven observational studies across populations found significant associations between vitamin K status and decline in kidney function; however, associations were often attenuated after adjustments. Conclusions: No clear effect of supplementation was observed on the reported kidney markers in patient populations. A clear association between low vitamin K status and impaired kidney function was confirmed. Studying heterogeneity makes the comparability and generalizability of the results difficult. Our review highlights the need for more cohort studies and clinical trials in general or patient populations. Full article

Acromegaly is caused by an excessive secretion of growth hormone and the secondary elevation of IGF-1 levels, leading to progressive changes in multiple body systems, including the craniofacial region and oral cavity. Dental manifestations such as mandibular overgrowth, macroglossia, malocclusion, periodontal disease, and prosthetic difficulties represent not only a clinical component of the disease but also a significant therapeutic and diagnostic challenge. The aim of this review is to present the current state of knowledge on the relationship between acromegaly and oral health and to analyze the role of interdisciplinary collaboration between endocrinologists and dentists in patient care. For this narrative review, a literature search was conducted in the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases covering the period from 2000 to 2025. Sixty-two peer-reviewed publications meeting the methodological and thematic criteria were included in the analysis, including original studies, meta-analyses, systematic reviews, and case reports. The results indicate significant correlations between disease activity and the severity of periodontal and microbiological changes, while effective endocrine treatment only results in the partial regression of morphological changes. Particular attention was given to the role of the dentist in recognizing the early symptoms of the disease, planning prosthetic and surgical treatment, and monitoring therapy-related complications. Interdisciplinary collaboration models, including integrated clinics and co-managed care, were also described as optimal systemic solutions for improving treatment quality. The conclusion drawn from the analysis are as follows: there is a need for the permanent integration of dentistry into the standard of interdisciplinary care for patients with acromegaly, in both diagnostic and therapeutic dimensions. Increasing awareness among dentists and developing integrated collaboration models may reduce the time to diagnosis, improve patients’ quality of life, and enable the more effective management of craniofacial complications in the course of this rare disease. Background/Objectives: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a multifactorial condition characterized by abdominal obesity, dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, hypertension, and chronic inflammation. As its global prevalence rises, there is increasing interest in natural, multi-targeted approaches to manage MetS. Curcuma longa Linn. (turmeric), especially its active compound curcumin, has shown therapeutic promise in preclinical studies. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the effects of Curcuma longa and its derivatives on MetS-related outcomes in rodent models. Methods: A comprehensive search was conducted across six databases (PubMed, Scopus, AMED, LILACS, MDPI, and Google Scholar), yielding 47 eligible in vivo studies. Data were extracted on key metabolic, inflammatory, and oxidative stress markers and analyzed using random-effects models. Results were presented as mean differences (MD) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). Results: Meta-analysis showed that curcumin significantly reduced body weight (rats: MD = −42.10; mice: MD = −2.91), blood glucose (rats: MD = −55.59; mice: MD = −28.69), triglycerides (rats: MD = −70.17; mice: MD = −24.57), total cholesterol (rats: MD = −35.77; mice: MD = −52.61), and LDL cholesterol (rats: MD = −69.34; mice: MD = −42.93). HDL cholesterol increased significantly in rats but not in mice. Inflammatory cytokines were markedly reduced, while oxidative stress improved via decreased malondialdehyde (MDA) and elevated superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) levels. Heterogeneity was moderate to high, primarily due to variations in curcumin dosage (ranging from 10 to 500 mg/kg) and treatment duration (2 to 16 weeks) across studies. Conclusions: This preclinical evidence supports Curcuma longa as a promising functional food component for preventing and managing MetS. Its multi-faceted effects warrant further clinical studies to validate its translational potential. Full article

Background: In recent years, there has been increasing interest in the application of repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) and transcranial Direct-Current Stimulation (tDCS) to enhance and rehabilitate the language abilities in individuals with neurodegenerative diseases. Objective: The aim of this narrative literature review is to investigate the usefulness of rTMS and tDCS to improve language abilities in people with Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA). Methods: This narrative literature review was conducted through a search of the PubMed online database to identify studies investigating the effects of multiple sessions of rTMS or tDCS on language abilities in PPA patients, applied either as stand-alone interventions or in combination with language treatment. Results: Thirty-three studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria; five studies employed rTMS without language treatment; two studies applied tDCS as stand-alone intervention; twenty-two studies combined tDCS with language treatment; and four studies assessed the effects of tDCS during verbal task without language treatment. Conclusions: rTMS and tDCS applied with or without concomitant language treatment appear to be promising interventions for enhancing language abilities in PPA, with sustained effects reported over time. Further research is necessary to optimise stimulation protocols and to improve our understanding of their long-term effects. Moreover, randomised controlled trials (RCTs) with larger sample sizes are critically needed to clarify the true impact of brain stimulation in PPA, with a focus on changes in cognitive and functional performance, neural activity, and potential molecular correlates. Background: Transfection is vital for gene therapy, mRNA treatments, CAR-T cell therapy, and regenerative medicine. While viral vectors are effective, non-viral systems like lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) offer safer, more flexible alternatives. This work explores emerging non-viral transfection technologies to improve delivery efficiency and therapeutic outcomes. Methods: This review synthesizes the current literature and recent advancements in non-viral transfection technologies. It focuses on the mechanisms, advantages, and limitations of various delivery systems, including lipid nanoparticles, biodegradable polymers, electroporation, peptide-based carriers, and microfluidic platforms. Comparative analysis was conducted to evaluate their performance in terms of transfection efficiency, cellular uptake, biocompatibility, and potential for clinical translation. Several academic search engines and online resources were utilized for data collection, including Science Direct, PubMed, Google Scholar Scopus, the National Cancer Institute’s online portal, and other reputable online databases. Results: Non-viral systems demonstrated superior performance in delivering mRNA, siRNA, and antisense oligonucleotides, particularly in clinical applications. Biodegradable polymers and peptide-based systems showed promise in enhancing biocompatibility and targeted delivery. Electroporation and microfluidic systems offered precise control over transfection parameters, improving reproducibility and scalability. Collectively, these innovations address key challenges in gene delivery, such as stability, immune response, and cell-type specificity. Conclusions: The continuous evolution of transfection technologies is pivotal for advancing gene and cell-based therapies. Non-viral delivery systems, particularly LNPs and emerging platforms like microfluidics and biodegradable polymers, offer safer and more adaptable alternatives to viral vectors. These innovations are critical for optimizing therapeutic efficacy and enabling personalized medicine, immunotherapy, and regenerative treatments. Future research should focus on integrating these technologies to develop next-generation transfection platforms with enhanced precision and clinical applicability. Full article

Background: Parkinson’s disease (PD) often involves autonomic dysfunction, most notably impaired baroreflex sensitivity (BRS), which disrupts cardiovascular homeostasis and contributes to orthostatic hypotension (OH). Pharmacological and invasive treatments, including deep brain stimulation, have yielded inconsistent benefits and carry procedural risks, highlighting the need for safer, more accessible alternatives. In this systematic review, we evaluated non-invasive interventions—spanning somatosensory stimulation, exercise modalities, thermal therapies, and positional strategies—aimed at improving cardiovascular autonomic function in PD. Methods: We searched PubMed, Embase, MEDLINE (Ovid), Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, and Web of Science for studies published between January 2014 and December 2024. Eight original studies (n = 8) including 205 participants met the inclusion criteria for analyzing cardiac sympathovagal balance. Results: Five studies demonstrated significant post-intervention increases in BRS. Most reported favorable shifts in heart rate variability (HRV) and favorable changes in the low-frequency/high-frequency (LF/HF) ratio. Across modalities, systolic blood pressure (SBP) decreased by an average of 5%, and some interventions produced benefits that persisted up to 24 h. Conclusion: Although sample sizes were small and protocols heterogeneous, the collective findings support the potential of non-invasive neuromodulation to enhance BRS and overall cardiovascular regulation in PD. Future research should focus on standardized, higher-intensity or combined protocols with longer follow-up periods to establish durable, clinically meaningful improvements in autonomic function and quality of life for people living with PD. Motor Function in the Setting of Nerve Allografts: Is This the Future of Facial Nerve Reconstruction?

Background: Peripheral nerve injuries, especially involving the facial nerve, present unique reconstructive challenges due to their complex functional demands and limited regenerative potential. While autografts remain the gold standard, their drawbacks—such as donor-site morbidity and limited availability—have driven interest in processed nerve allografts. Acellular grafts, in particular, offer promising off-the-shelf alternatives without the need for immunosuppression. Methods: We conducted a narrative review of the literature (1990–2023), identifying 55 peer-reviewed studies via PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library. The studies included clinical and preclinical work on motor nerve regeneration using processed nerve allografts, with particular attention to outcomes in facial nerve repair. Two independent reviewers conducted abstract screening, full-text review, and data extraction. Results: Processed nerve allografts show encouraging motor recovery in gaps under 50 mm, with recovery rates of up to 85% reported. Outcomes decrease significantly in longer gaps (>50–60 mm) and in complex cases, including facial nerve repairs, where evidence remains sparse and largely extrapolated from broader motor nerve data. Registry data (e.g., RANGER) support their use but are limited by heterogeneity and lack of randomization. Conclusions: Processed nerve allografts represent a viable alternative to autografts in selected cases—especially short to mid-length motor nerve defects. However, their role in facial nerve reconstruction remains insufficiently studied. Further trials are needed to address specific anatomical and functional challenges in this subgroup and to clarify long-gap efficacy. Full article

Antimicrobial Effect of Graphene in Dentistry: A Scoping Review

Background/Objectives: The functionalization of various forms of graphene, such as graphene nanoplatelets, graphene oxide, and reduced graphene oxide, in biomaterials is a promising strategy in dentistry, particularly regarding their antimicrobial potential. However, conclusive studies on the toxicity and biocompatibility of graphene-based materials remain limited, and standardized guidelines for their production, handling, and dental applications are still lacking. This scoping review aims to map the available studies on various types of graphene, synthesize evidence on their antimicrobial effectiveness, and describe the main biological responses when functionalized in dental biomaterials. Methods: An electronic search was conducted in the Clarivate, PubMed, and Scopus databases using the descriptors as follows: ‘graphene’ AND ‘antimicrobial effect’ AND ‘bactericidal effect’ AND (‘graphene oxide’ OR ‘dental biofilm’ OR ‘antibacterial properties’ OR ‘dental materials’). Article screening and eligibility assessment were performed based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria, following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Results: The search identified 793 articles. After removing duplicates, applying the eligibility criteria, and performing a full-text analysis of 64 articles, 21 studies were included in the review. Graphene oxide, particularly at low concentrations, was the most commonly studied graphene variant, demonstrating significant antimicrobial efficacy against S. mutans, S. faecalis, E. coli, P. aeruginosa, and C. albicans. Both mechanical and chemical mechanisms have been linked to the biological responses of graphene-doped biomaterials. The biocompatibility and cytotoxicity of these compounds remain controversial, with some studies reporting favorable outcomes, while others raise significant concerns. Conclusions: Graphene shows great promise as an antimicrobial agent in dental biomaterials. Despite encouraging results, more in vitro and in vivo studies are needed to better understand its biocompatibility and cytotoxicity in dental applications. Additionally, standardized production protocols, clearly defined clinical applications in dentistry, and regulatory guidelines from the World Health Organization concerning handling procedures and occupational risks remain necessary. Dual-Task Training Interventions for Cerebral Palsy: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Effects on Postural Balance and Walking Speed

Background and Objectives: Dual-task training (DTT) is an innovative therapeutic approach that involves the simultaneous application of two tasks, which can be motor, cognitive, or a combination of both. Children with cerebral palsy (CP) often exhibit impairments in balance, motor skills, and gait, conditions that may be amenable to improvement through DTT. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of DTT in enhancing balance, walking speed, and gross motor function-related balance in children with CP. Materials and Methods: In accordance with PRISMA guidelines, a comprehensive systematic review with meta-analysis (SRMA) was conducted. Electronic databases like PubMed Medline, Scopus, Web of Science, CINAHL, and PEDro were searched up to March 2025, with no language or publication date restrictions. Only randomized controlled trials (RCTs) examining the effectiveness of DTT on balance, gross motor function, and walking speed in children with CP were included. The methodological quality and risk of bias of the included RCTs were assessed using the PEDro scale. Pooled effects were calculated using Cohen’s standardized mean difference (SMD) and its 95% confidence interval (95% CI) within random-effects models. Results: Eight RCTs, providing data from 216 children, were included. Meta-analyses suggested that DTT was more effective than conventional therapies for increasing functional (SMD = 0.65; 95% CI 0.18 to 1.13), dynamic (SMD = 0.61; 95% CI 0.15 to 1.1), and static balance (SMD = 0.46; 95% CI 0.02 to 0.9), as well as standing (SMD = 0.75; 95% CI 0.31 to 1.18; p = 0.001) and locomotion dimensions (SMD = 0.65; 95% CI 0.22 to 1.08) of the Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM) and walking speed (SMD = 0.46; 95% CI 0.06 to 0.87). Subgroup analyses revealed that a motor–cognitive dual task is better than a motor single task for functional, dynamic, and static balance and standing and locomotion dimensions for the GMFM. Conclusions: This SRMA, including the major number of RCTs to date, suggests that DTT is effective in increasing balance, walking and gross motor function-related balance in children with CP. Gastrointestinal (GI) cancers represent a significant global health burden, with high morbidity and mortality often linked to late-stage detection and metastatic disease. The progression of these malignancies is critically driven by angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels, and the surrounding dynamic tumor microenvironment (TME), a complex ecosystem comprising various cell types and non-cellular components. This comprehensive review, based on a systematic search of the PubMed database, synthesizes the existing literature to define the intertwined roles of angiogenesis and the TME in GI tumorigenesis. The TME’s influence creates conditions favorable for tumor growth, invasion, and metastasis, but sometimes induces resistance to current therapies. Available therapeutic strategies for inhibiting angiogenesis involve antibodies and oral tyrosine kinase inhibitors, while immune modulation within the tumor microenvironment is mainly achieved through checkpoint inhibitor antibodies and chemotherapy. Creative emerging strategies encompassing cellular therapies, bispecific antibodies, and new targets such as CD40, DLL4, and Ang2, amongst others, are focused on inhibiting proangiogenic pathways more profoundly, reversing resistance to prior drugs, and modulating the TME to enhance therapeutic efficacy. A deeper understanding of the complex interactions between components of the TME is crucial for addressing the unmet need for novel and effective therapeutic interventions against aggressive GI cancers. Background/Objectives: Historically, echocardiographic imaging of the right heart has been challenging because its abnormal geometry is not conducive to reproducible anatomical and functional assessment. With the development of advanced echocardiographic techniques, it is now possible to complete an integrated assessment of the right heart that has fewer assumptions, resulting in increased accuracy and precision. Echocardiography continues to be the first-line imaging modality for diagnostic analysis and the management of acute and chronic right heart failure because of its portability, versatility, and affordability compared to cardiac computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, nuclear scintigraphy, and positron emission tomography. Virtually all echocardiographic parameters have been well-validated and have demonstrated prognostic significance. The goal of this narrative review of the echocardiographic parameters of the right heart chambers and hemodynamic alterations associated with right ventricular dysfunction is to present information that must be acquired during each examination to deliver a comprehensive assessment of the right heart and to discuss their clinical significance in right heart failure. Methods: Using a literature search in the PubMed database from 1985 to 2025 and the Cochrane database, which included but was not limited to terminology that are descriptive of right heart anatomy and function, disease states involving acute and chronic right heart failure and pulmonary hypertension, and the application of conventional and advanced echocardiographic modalities that strive to elucidate the pathophysiology of right heart failure, we reviewed randomized control trials, observational retrospective and prospective cohort studies, societal guidelines, and systematic review articles. Conclusions: In addition to the conventional 2-dimensional echocardiography and color, spectral, and tissue Doppler measurements, a contemporary echocardiographic assessment of a patient with suspected or proven right heart failure must include 3-dimensional echocardiographic-derived measurements, speckle-tracking echocardiography strain analysis, and hemodynamics parameters to not only characterize the right heart anatomy but to also determine the underlying pathophysiology of right heart failure. Complete and point-of-care echocardiography is available in virtually all clinical settings for routine care, but this imaging tool is particularly indispensable in the emergency department, intensive care units, and operating room, where it can provide an immediate assessment of right ventricular function and associated hemodynamic changes to assist with real-time management decisions. Accurately assessing the depth of anaesthesia in animals remains a challenge, as traditional monitoring methods fail to capture subtle changes in brain activity. This review aimed to systematically map and critically evaluate the range of quantitative variables derived from electroencephalography (EEG) used to monitor sedation or anaesthesia in live animals, excluding laboratory rodents, over the past 35 years. Studies were identified through comprehensive searches in major biomedical databases (PubMed, Embase, CAB Abstract). To be included, studies had to report EEG use in relation to anaesthesia or sedation in living animals. A total of 169 studies were selected after screening and data extraction. Information was charted by animal species and reported EEG-derived variables. The most frequently reported variables were spectral edge frequencies, spectral power metrics, suppression ratio, and proprietary indices, such as the Bispectral Index. Methodological variability was high, and no consensus emerged on optimal EEG measures across species. While EEG-derived quantitative variables provide valuable insights, their interpretation remains highly context-dependent. Further research is necessary to refine these methods, explore variable combinations, and improve their clinical relevance in veterinary medicine. Full article

Objective: Due to the increasing esthetic demand among pediatric patients and different restorative materials, we focused on analyzing which of the options of restorations may provide superior clinical outcomes. Methods: A systematic review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) using PubMed and Cochrane databases. Results: Five articles met all inclusion criteria from an initial pool of 359 articles identified in the initial search. Greater bond strength was observed when pulpotomized teeth were restored with Biodentine® and resin composites compared to resin-modified glass ionomer cements (RMGICs). When comparing pulpotomies in primary teeth with MTA and Biodentine®, the fracture resistance values were higher in the pulpotomized teeth with Biodentine® than with MTA. Additionally, following a narrative synthesis in MTA-treated teeth, a higher risk of failure was observed using RMGICs or composite instead of stainless-steel crowns (SCCs) as the final restorative material. Conclusions: Variables such as the type of final restoration can affect the survival of primary teeth after pulpotomy reconstruction. Regardless of the pulp material, survival with SSCs is higher, but resin composites appear to be a viable restorative material after Biodentine® application. Full article

Boron-containing compounds (BCCs) have emerged as potential drugs. Their drug-like effects are mainly explained by their mechanisms of action in enzymes. Nowadays, some experimental data support the effects of specific BCCs on GPCRs, provided there are crystal structures that show them bound to G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). Some BCCs are recognized as potential ligands of GPCRs—the drug targets of many diseases. Objective: The aim of this study was to collecte up-to-date data on the interactions of BCCs with GPCRs. Methods: Data were collected from the National Center of Biotechnology Information, PubMed, Global Health, Embase, the Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases and reviewed. Results: Some experimental reports support the interactions of BCCs with several GPCRs, acting as their labels, agonists, or antagonists. These interactions can be inferred based on in silico and in vitro results if there are no available crystal structures for validating them. Conclusions: The actions of BCCs on GPCRs are no longer hypothetical, as the existing evidence supports BCCs’ interactions with and actions on GPCRs. Full article

Functional and Neuroplastic Effects of Cross-Education in Anterior Cruciate Ligament Rehabilitation: A Scoping Review with Bibliometric Analysis

Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) results in prolonged muscle weakness, impaired neuromuscular control, and delayed return to sport. Cross-education (CE), unilateral training of the uninjured limb, has been proposed as an adjunct therapy to promote bilateral adaptations. This scoping review evaluated the functional and neuroplastic effects of CE rehabilitation post-ACLR. Following PRISMA-ScR and JBI guidelines, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and PEDro were searched up to February 2025. A bibliometric analysis was also conducted to report keyword co-occurrence and identify trends in this line of research. Of 333 screened references, 14 studies (price index: 43% and low-to-moderate risk of bias) involving 721 participants (aged 17–45 years) met inclusion criteria. CE protocols (6–12 weeks; 2–5 sessions/week) incorporating isometric, concentric, and eccentric exercises demonstrated strength gains (10–31%) and strength preservation, alongside improved limb symmetry (5–14%) and dynamic balance (7–18%). There is growing interest in neuroplasticity and corticospinal excitability, although neuroplastic changes were assessed heterogeneously across studies. Findings support CE as a feasible and low-cost strategy to complement early-stage ACLR rehabilitation, especially when direct loading of the affected limb is limited. Standardized protocols for clinical intervention and neurophysiological assessment are needed. Full article
