This study investigates how sustainable leadership fosters innovative approaches to environmental management by promoting green innovative work behavior (GIWB) among employees in five-star hotels, with a focus on the mediating roles of green psychological empowerment (GPE) and green self-efficacy (GSE). Grounded in Ability–Motivation–Opportunity (AMO) theory, the research examines how sustainability-oriented leadership practices enhance employees’ motivation, confidence, and sense of impact, enabling them to generate, promote, and implement novel environmentally friendly solutions in hotel operations. Data were collected from 396 full-time hotel employees using a structured questionnaire and analyzed through PLS-SEM with WarpPLS software. The results indicate that sustainable leadership positively influences GPE, GSE, and GIWB. Furthermore, both GPE and GSE partially mediate the effect of sustainable leadership on GIWB, demonstrating the psychological pathways through which leadership translates sustainability values into innovative employee-driven practices. These findings advance theoretical understanding of how leadership can drive innovation in sustainability management within the hospitality sector and offer practical, context-specific guidance for hotel managers aiming to foster creative, environmentally responsible solutions. Green roofs have emerged as a key nature-based solution for improving environmental quality, strengthening urban resilience, and enhancing human wellbeing. In the hospitality sector—where sustainable design and guest experience increasingly intersect—the incorporation of green roof gardens is particularly significant. Urban hotels face heightened challenges related to elevated temperatures, reduced green space, and the growing need for restorative environments within dense urban settings. This study aims to examine how green roof gardens function as integrated ecological, social, and psychological infrastructures in hotel environments. It evaluates the extent to which rooftop green spaces contribute to environmental sustainability, enhance guest experience, and foster community connections. The research adopts a qualitative design combining a comprehensive literature review conducted at selected five-star hotels in Greece. Data from secondary sources and field-based assessments were thematically analyzed to identify recurring patterns in environmental performance, social use, and psychological benefits. Findings indicate that hotel green roof gardens act as multifunctional systems that deliver significant ecological benefits—such as improved microclimate regulation, stormwater retention, and biodiversity support—while simultaneously enriching social interaction and guest experience through accessible, esthetically appealing spaces. Observations further highlight their contribution to psychological wellbeing by offering restorative environments characterized by greenery, natural light, and panoramic views. The study concludes that green roof gardens represent an effective design strategy that integrates sustainability, hospitality experience, and urban wellbeing. Their application in hotels provides both conceptual insight and practical guidance for the development of more resilient, livable, and guest-centered urban environments. These findings underscore the importance of incorporating green roofs into contemporary tourism and urban planning practices. Full article

The environmental crisis precipitated by climate change has accelerated the urgency of urban green and low-carbon transformation. In 2024, China’s Action Plan for the National Standardization Development Outline (2024–2025) stipulated requirements for continuously improving the standard system for carbon peaking and carbon neutrality in public institutions. As key venues for knowledge innovation and energy consumption, the low-carbon transformation of higher education institutions holds significant importance for China’s achievement of its dual carbon goals. However, China lacks a systematic evaluation framework specifically designed for university campus carbon emissions. Existing green campus assessment standards often suffer from inadequate indicator adaptability, a lack of update mechanisms, and limited coverage. The STARS sustainability assessment system, widely adopted in North America, offers valuable reference points for establishing campus carbon emissions evaluation frameworks due to its features of indicator adaptability, dynamic update mechanisms, and comprehensive evaluation dimensions. This paper conducts an exploratory comparative case study of Princeton University (USA) and Tianjin University (China)—two leading research-intensive institutions—within the STARS 2.2 framework. It systematically analyses their divergent approaches to carbon management and evaluation, not as representatives of their respective continents, but as exemplars of how advanced universities operationalize low-carbon transitions. Based on this analysis and a review of domestic Chinese standards, it proposes a development pathway for China’s university campus carbon emissions evaluation system: (1) Establish a differentiated indicator system combining ‘universal fundamentals with discipline-specific types’ to enhance adaptability to campus characteristics; (2) Establish a mechanism for periodic version updates to the evaluation standard itself, ensuring alignment with evolving national carbon goals and technological advancements; (3) Develop a comprehensive and transparent carbon accounting framework that integrates direct emissions, purchased energy, and indirect sources. This research provides theoretical foundations and methodological support for institutional development and practical optimization in carbon emissions evaluation within Chinese higher education institutions. Sustainable innovation presents a significant challenge for modern organizations as they operate in an ever-evolving and complex global environment. It requires creating and adopting new products, services, or processes that are not only economically feasible but also environmentally responsible. This study aims to provide insights into the impact of ergonomics on sustainable innovation within the Hospitality sector, with a focus on green work engagement and green intrinsic motivation as mediating factors. Data was collected from full-time employees working in five-star hotels in Egypt, with a total of 424 valid responses analyzed. The study employed the PLS-SEM analytical method, and the analysis was conducted using WarpPLS 7.0. The findings revealed a positive relationship between employees’ perception of ergonomics and sustainable innovation. Additionally, ergonomics was positively linked to both green work engagement and green intrinsic motivation. Moreover, green work engagement and green intrinsic motivation were found to have a positive impact on sustainable innovation. The study also demonstrated that green work engagement and green intrinsic motivation serve as mediators between ergonomics and sustainable innovation. This study offers valuable insights into the significance of ergonomics for the hospitality industry. Integrating ergonomics enables organizations to create a healthier, more innovative, and sustainable work environment. Full article

Three experiments were conducted to compare different dietary supplements fed to mixed-run White Pekin ducks (n = 48 birds/treatment) reared for 35 d and exposed to ambient temperatures from d 0 to 35 or heat stress (32 °C–35 °C) for 12 h/d on d 20–35. The basal diet (CON) was supplemented with 0.5 kg/MT seaweed extract (SE), 2.0 kg/MT betaine (BET), or 1.25 kg/MT yeast fermentate (YF) in Experiment 1; with 0.25 kg/MT mannanoligosaccharide (MOS), 0.5 kg/MT green tea powder (GT), or 0.55 kg/MT Poultry Star synbiotic (PS) in Experiment 2; or with 0.09 kg/MT Essential Oil #1 (EO1), 0.5 kg/MT Essential Oil #2 (EO2), or 0.5 kg/MT Microsaf probiotic (MS) in Experiment 3. Heat stress reduced body weight and feed consumption (Exp. 1–3) and negatively affected measures of stress (Exp. 1 and 2) and at least one measure of intestinal health (Exp. 1–3). Intestinal morphology was improved in birds that were fed EO1, EO2, and MS, and some measures of stress susceptibility were improved in birds that were fed SE, YF, MOS, GT, BET, or PS. Essential oil supplementation may be best used in combination with another of the supplements tested to optimize health and welfare in Pekin ducks. Further research could clarify which combinations are ideal for supporting both intestinal health and stress susceptibility in ducks. Full article

This study compares certification systems for green healthcare facilities implemented worldwide. Healthcare facilities are complex structures designed to provide uninterrupted service while involving substantial resources, high energy consumption, and heavy human and material traffic. The COVID-19 pandemic emphasized the importance of designs that ensure hygiene, reduce environmental impact, and improve energy efficiency, making green certification systems for healthcare facilities increasingly critical. Eight certification systems currently in use across eight countries were examined, four from advanced economies (LEED in the U.S., BREEAM in the U.K., Green Star in Australia, and CASBEE in Japan) and four from developing economies (YeS-TR in Türkiye, IGBC in India, GBI in Malaysia, and GREENSHIP in Indonesia). Country selection considered regional diversity, similarities in environmental policies, and the potential for healthcare infrastructure development. A literature-based comparative analysis was conducted, and seven key categories were identified for evaluating sustainability: sustainable land and transport, water and waste management, energy efficiency, material and life cycle impact, indoor environmental quality, project management process, and innovation. The comparison revealed considerable overlap among the systems but also highlighted shortcomings in addressing healthcare-specific needs. This paper contributes to the advancement of sustainability assessment in the healthcare sector by highlighting the need for certification schemes specifically designed for medical facilities. The findings emphasize the necessity of developing healthcare-tailored frameworks that not only address environmental performance but also capture the unique operational, functional, and clinical dynamics of this sector. The research investigates the mediating influence of Green Human Resource Management (GHRM) practices—including environmentally focused recruitment, training, and performance management—on the relationship between green leadership and employees’ green advocacy within Saudi Arabia’s hospitality and tourism industry. Data were gathered through a structured questionnaire administered to supervisors and managers working in five-star hotels, producing 544 valid responses for analysis. The conceptual framework was examined using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with the WarpPLS 0.7 software to rigorously assess both the measurement validity and structural associations. The analysis demonstrated that green leadership exerts a positive and significant impact on GHRM practices as well as on employees’ willingness to advocate for environmentally responsible behaviors. Furthermore, GHRM initiatives were found to strengthen employees’ pro-environmental engagement and serve as a partial mediating channel between green leadership and green advocacy. Overall, the findings highlight that institutionalizing sustainable HRM approaches is a fundamental route through which leadership enhances environmental accountability and promotes the long-term economic viability of the hospitality sector. The study concludes by underscoring its theoretical and managerial implications, emphasizing how leadership-guided sustainability actions can foster an organizational culture grounded in ecological responsibility. The hospitality sector is undergoing a rapid digital change due to smart technology and artificial intelligence. This presents both possibilities and problems for the development of sustainable innovation. Yet, little is known about how leaders’ technological competencies affect employees’ capacity to engage in environmentally responsible innovation. This study addresses this gap by examining how leaders’ competencies in smart technology, artificial intelligence, robotics, and algorithms (STARA) shape employees’ green innovative behavior in hotels. Anchored in person–job fit theory and cognitive appraisal theory, we propose that when employees perceive a strong alignment between their skills and the technological demands introduced by STARA, they are more likely to appraise such technologies as opportunities (challenge appraisals) rather than threats (hindrance appraisals). These appraisals, in turn, mediate the link between leadership and green innovation. Convenience sampling was used to gather data from staff members at five-star, ecologically certified hotels in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt. According to structural equation modeling using SmartPLS, employees’ green innovation behaviors are improved by leaders’ STARA abilities. Crucially, staff members who viewed STARA technologies as challenges (i.e., chances for learning and development) converted leadership skills into more robust green innovation results. Conversely, employees who perceived these technologies as obstacles, such as burdens or threats, diminished this beneficial effect and decreased their desire to participate in green innovation. These findings highlight that the way employees cognitively evaluate technological change determines whether leadership efforts foster or obstruct sustainable innovation in hotels. Full article

China’s dual carbon goals necessitate green transformation across industries, with STAR Market enterprises serving as crucial drivers of technological innovation. Existing studies predominantly focus on traditional sectors, overlooking dynamic policy interactions and structural heterogeneity in these technology-intensive firms. This study examines how coordinated environmental tax reforms, green finance initiatives, and equity network synergies collectively shape enterprise green transition, using multi-period difference-in-differences and triple-difference models across 2019 Q3–2023 Q4. By integrating financial records, patent filings, and carbon emission data from 487 STAR Market firms, the analysis identifies environmental cost pressures as the dominant policy driver, complemented by delayed financing incentives and accelerated resource integration through corporate networks. Regional institutional environments further modulate these effects, with areas implementing stricter tax reforms exhibiting stronger outcomes. The findings advocate for adaptive policy designs that align fiscal instruments with regional innovation capacities, optimize financial tools for technology commercialization cycles, and leverage inter-firm networks to amplify sustainability efforts. These insights contribute to refining China’s climate governance framework for emerging technology sectors. Full article

The issue of organizational sustainability is pivotal in the hospitality industry in the face of increasing environmental and societal pressures. This research investigates the mediating roles of green knowledge sharing (GKS) and green employee voice (GEV) on talent management (TM) strategic contribution to strengthen organizational sustainability (OS). Based on the Social Exchange Theory, TM is conceptualized as the consequence of employee engagement in sustainability behaviors in relational processes. the data were collected from 268 employees working at five-star hotels in the Eastern Region, Saudi Arabia. The Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) was used to evaluate the hypotheses. The results indicate that TM has direct positive influence on OS, GKS, and GEV, which determines its central position in development of environmentally friendly workforce. GEV and GKS also have direct influences on OS, and therefore marketplace advocacy and knowledge exchange are essential to embedding sustainable practices. Mediation analyses show GKS and GEV can partially mediate the TM and OS relationship, proving that the impact TM has on sustainability is further facilitated by the green sharing of knowledge and proactive voice by the employees. Both theoretical and practical implications for both academics and practitioners have been addressed. Full article

Sustainability has become a key focus in the hospitality industry, with travelers increasingly seeking accommodations with strong environmental commitments. As part of this trend, many hotels are adopting green marketing strategies to improve their brand image and appeal to eco-conscious consumers. However, the challenge lies in ensuring that these strategies are perceived as genuine rather than as “greenwashing,” which undermines their effectiveness and harms the brand’s credibility. This study examines the impact of green marketing strategies on the brand image of 5-star hotels in Lima, Peru. A survey of 206 hotel clients reveals that the implementation of green marketing positively influences the perceived benefits, corporate image, trust, and loyalty associated with these establishments. The results highlight that younger generations, particularly Millennials and Generation Z, are more likely to value sustainability initiatives, making them an important target for hotels seeking to enhance their brand image through eco-friendly practices. The findings suggest that effective communication of sustainable practices and transparency are essential to avoid greenwashing and build customer loyalty. This research contributes to the limited knowledge on green marketing in the Peruvian hotel sector and provides insights for both hotel managers and researchers on the importance of integrating genuine sustainability efforts into their marketing strategies. This study aimed to determine the effects of LED applications and application periods on seedling development. To this end, four different LED applications (blue 100%, red 100%, green 100%, and full-spectrum 100% (control)) were applied to different star flower varieties (Figaro Violet shades—flower color: purple, Figaro Orange shades—flower color: orange, Figaro White shades—flower color: white, and Figaro Red shades—flower color: red) for 15 and 30 days. These applications were repeated over two years (two vegetation periods). The results revealed that the red-flowered and white-flowered varieties exhibited higher values in terms of root length, root number, stem diameter, 2nd and 4th leaf petiole length, 2nd and 4th leaf width, and leaf number under full-spectrum and red LED applications. We also observed that red LED application for 30 days is suitable for seedling height development in the Figaro Orange shades variety. Conversely, the results showed that the effects of LED application durations on root length and stem diameter did not show a statistically significant difference, while the 15-day application yielded the best results for root number. In the Figaro Red shades and Figaro White shades varieties, the use of red LED applications for 30 days yielded results similar to those of full-spectrum applications, indicating that both applications can be used for seedling cultivation. However, evaluation for sustainability is critical, and the Green Star certification provides assurance. Building information modelling has emerged as a transformative technology, integrating environmental sustainability into building design and construction. This study explores the use of BIM to enhance green building outcomes, focusing on optimising stakeholder engagement, energy efficiency, waste control, and environmentally sustainable design. This study employed a case study of an educational building, illustrating how BIM frameworks support Green Star certifications by streamlining design analysis, enhancing project value, and improving compliance with sustainability metrics. Findings highlight BIM’s role in advancing low-carbon, energy-efficient building designs while fostering collaboration across disciplines. This research investigates the foundational approach required to establish a framework for implementing the Green Star certification in non-residential, environmentally sustainable designs. Further, this study underscores the importance of integrating BIM in achieving Green Star benchmarks and provides a roadmap for leveraging digital modelling to meet global sustainability goals. Recommendations include expanding BIM capabilities to support broader environmental assessments and operational efficiencies. Full article

This study addresses a gap in hospitality research by investigating how employees’ perceptions of green intellectual capital (GIC) influence their satisfaction with both career and life. Although sustainability has become increasingly relevant in organizational strategies, limited research has examined how such job resources affect employees’ attitudes. Guided by the Job Demands–Resources (JD-R) framework, the study proposes a model in which organizational embeddedness (OE) mediates the relationship between green intellectual capital (GIC) and satisfaction outcomes, while thriving at work (TAW) moderates this pathway. The analysis is based on data collected from 371 employees working in four- and five-star hotels in Turkey. Structural equation modeling was used to test the hypotheses. The findings show that positive perceptions of green intellectual capital (GIC) are associated with stronger embeddedness, which, in turn, enhances career and life satisfaction. Moreover, this indirect effect is more pronounced among employees who report higher levels of thriving. The results emphasize how sustainability-oriented practices can serve as meaningful resources that improve employee outcomes in the hospitality industry. Full article

This study examines how Chinese tourists perceive the value of sustainable practices implemented in five-star hotels in Phuket, Thailand, through the lens of the perceived value theory and the service experience framework. While luxury hotels increasingly adopt green initiatives, research exploring how tourists evaluate these efforts across the full guest journey is limited. Addressing this gap, this study aimed to examine how attitudinally distinct tourist segments perceive sustainable practices across three service stages: pre-consumption, consumption, and post-consumption. A cross-sectional survey of 400 Chinese tourists was conducted, applying k-means clustering to segment respondents by sustainability attitudes, followed by multi-group structural equation modeling. Two segments emerged: environmentally engaged travelers and conventional comfort travelers. The results indicate that the emotional value dominates during the stay, the functional value drives pre-stay decisions, and the ethical/social value shapes post-stay reflections. Environmentally engaged tourists were more responsive to ethical and social cues. The findings highlight sustainability as a multidimensional, stage-specific construct moderated by guest attitudes. Theoretically, this research extends perceived value frameworks by mapping sustainability perceptions across the guest journey. Practically, it offers actionable insights for hotel managers seeking to design value-aligned green strategies and segmented communication. Tailoring sustainability initiatives to tourist profiles can enhance satisfaction, loyalty, and advocacy in the luxury hospitality sector. Full article
