Changes in preservation conditions act as an important environmental filter driving shifts in microbial communities. However, the precise identities, functional traits, and ecological mechanisms of the dominant agents driving stage-specific deterioration remain insufficiently characterized. This study investigated microbial communities and dominant fungal degraders in waterlogged versus dried bamboo slips using amplicon sequencing, multivariate statistics, and microbial isolation. Results revealed compositionally distinct communities, with dried slips sharing only a small proportion of operational taxonomic units (OTUs) with waterlogged slips, while indicating the persistence of a subset of taxa across preservation states. A key discovery was the dominance of Fonsecaea minima (92% relative abundance) at the water-solid-air interface of partially submerged slips. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) indicate that this fungus forms melanin-rich, biofilm-like surface structures, suggesting enhanced surface colonization and stress resistance. In contrast, the fungal community isolated from dried slips was characterized by Apiospora saccharicola associated with detectable xylanase activity. Meanwhile, the xerophilic species Xerogeomyces pulvereus dominated (99% relative abundance) the storage box environment. Together, these results demonstrate that preservation niches select for fungi with distinct functional traits, highlighting the importance of stage-specific preservation strategies that consider functional traits rather than taxonomic identity alone. The Chinese pepper buprestid beetle, Agrilus zanthoxylumi Li Meng Lou, 1989 (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), is a major trunk-boring pest affecting the yield and quality of Zanthoxylum bungeanum. Clarifying its feeding preferences among different pepper varieties and their associations with host-derived volatiles is important for understanding and improving effective management strategies. This study conducted feeding tests under no-choice and dual-choice conditions to evaluate the beetle’s feeding preferences among three Z. bungeanum varieties—Fugu, Dahongpao, and Feng. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was employed to analyze leaf volatiles, with factor analysis and partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) used to identify key volatiles. Results showed that A. zanthoxylumi exhibited the highest resting frequency and feeding amount on Z. bungeanum Fugu leaves, with the lowest on Z. bungeanum Dahongpao leaves. Significant differences in unique volatiles were observed among the three varieties. Z. bungeanum Fugu contained 17 unique components, including (E)-4-hexen-1-ol, (−)-limonene, and (−)-α-pinene, with significantly higher quantities than Z. bungeanum Dahongpao and bungeanum Feng. Multivariate analyses further revealed distinct distributions in volatiles, with γ-terpinene, α-terpineol, and linalyl acetate emerging as key compounds distinguishing varieties. These results indicate that the feeding preferences of A. zanthoxylumi are closely related to host volatiles, suggesting variety-specific compounds may serve as primary chemical cues driving its preferences. Microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) have emerged as pervasive pollutants across different aquatic systems on a global basis, yet integrated assessments linking wastewater, riverine, and marine environments remain scarce. The present study provides the first comprehensive evaluation of MPs in three interconnected aquatic matrices of Northern Greece, namely surface seawater from the Thermaic Gulf, surface freshwater from the Axios River, and influent and effluent wastewaters from the Thessaloniki WWTP (Sindos). During two sampling periods spanning late 2023 and spring 2024, suspected MPs were isolated, morphologically classified by stereomicroscopy, and chemically characterized through pyrolysis–gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py–GC/MS). MPs were ubiquitously detected in all substrates, exhibiting distinct spatial and compositional patterns. Seawater samples displayed moderate concentrations (1.5–4.8 items m−3) dominated by fibers and fragments, while riverine samples contained slightly higher levels (0.5–2.5 items m−3), enriched in fibrous forms and polyolefins (PE, PP). Wastewater influents showed the highest MP abundance (78–200 items L−1; 155.6–392.3 µg L−1), decreasing significantly in effluents (11–44 items L−1; 27.8–74.3 µg L−1), corresponding to a removal efficiency of 81–87.5%, being the first indicative removal efficiencies in a Greek WWTP. Among the different polymers detected, polyethylene, polypropylene, and poly(ethylene terephthalate) were identified as the most prevalent polymers across all matrices. Interestingly, a shift toward smaller size classes (125–500 µm) in effluents indicated in-plant fragmentation processes, while increased concentrations during December coincided with increased rainfall, highlighting the influence of hydrological conditions on MP fluxes. The combined morphological and polymer-specific approach provides a holistic zunderstanding of MP transport from inland to marine systems, establishing essential baseline data for Mediterranean environments and reinforcing the need for integrated monitoring and mitigation strategies. The characteristic green-note aroma of Chinese plum (Prunus salicina) is largely defined by C6 aldehydes and alcohols synthesized through the fatty acid pathway involving lipoxygenase (LOX), hydroperoxide lyase (HPL), and alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH). However, the LOX/HPL/ADH gene families and their potential contributions to C6 volatile formation remain poorly characterized in Chinese plum. Here, we integrated genome-wide identification with cultivar-level volatile profiling and RT–qPCR expression analyses to link candidate genes with C6 volatile accumulation. We identified 8 PsLOX, 3 PsHPL, and 13 PsADH genes and classified them into 2, 1, and 3 subfamilies, respectively. Conserved motifs/domains were shared within each family, whereas gene-structure variation suggested functional divergence; segmental duplication was the main driver of family expansion. To explore their functional relevance to aroma biosynthesis, five major C6 aldehydes and alcohols were analyzed in ten cultivars using solid-phase microextraction/gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (SPME/GC–MS), revealing substantial diversity in green-note composition. Combined with reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qRT–PCR) expression profiling, low PsADH2.7 expression was associated with high hexanal content, whereas elevated PsLOX5 and PsADH2.2 expression corresponded to increased 1-hexanol accumulation. High 2-ethyl-1-hexanol levels were linked to increased PsLOX4.1 and PsHPL1.3 but decreased PsADH1.2 expression. In addition, (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol abundance showed strong positive correlations with PsLOX3.1, PsHPL1.2, and PsADH2.6 expression. This integrated genomic and expression–metabolite analysis highlights candidate genes potentially involved in C6 aldehyde/alcohol biosynthesis underlying the green-note aroma of Chinese plum and provides genetic targets for aroma-oriented breeding. Produced water (PW) generated from oil and gas operations poses a significant environmental challenge due to its high salinity and complex organic–inorganic composition. This study evaluates forward osmosis (FO) as an energy-efficient approach for PW treatment by comparing a commercial cellulose triacetate (CTA) membrane and a fabricated electrospun nanofibrous membrane, both modified with a zwitterionic sulfobetaine methacrylate/polydopamine (SBMA/PDA) coating. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) spectra verified the successful incorporation of SBMA and PDA through the appearance of characteristic sulfonate, quaternary ammonium, and catechol/amine-related vibrations. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging revealed the intrinsic dense surface of the CTA membrane and the highly porous nanofibrous architecture of the electrospun membrane, with both materials showing uniform coating coverage after modification. Complementary analyses supported these observations: X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the presence of nitrogen, sulfur, and chlorine containing functionalities associated with the zwitterionic layer; Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) demonstrated that surface modification did not compromise the thermal stability of either membrane; and contact-angle measurements showed substantial increases in surface hydrophilicity following modification. Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) analysis of the Permian Basin PW revealed a chemically complex mixture dominated by light hydrocarbons, alkylated aromatics, and heavy semi-volatile organic compounds. FO experiments using hypersaline PW demonstrated that the fabricated membrane consistently outperformed the commercial membrane under both MgCl2 and Na3PO4 draw conditions, achieving up to ~40% higher initial water flux and total solids rejection as high as ~62% when operated with 2.5 M Na3PO4. The improved performance is attributed to the nanofibrous architecture and zwitterionic surface chemistry, which together reduced fouling and reverse solute transport. These findings highlight the potential of engineered zwitterionic nanofibrous membranes as robust alternatives to commercial FO membranes for sustainable produced water treatment. Full article

This study systematically assessed the dietary exposure risks of short-chain and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs and MCCPs) through chicken consumption in China, where these persistent organic pollutants are widely produced and used. As an important component of the Chinese diet, chicken was selected as the research matrix due to its high lipid content and potential for chlorinated paraffin bio-accumulation, while available data on these contaminants in market-sold chicken remains limited. We collected 126 representative commercial chicken samples from eight major provinces and municipalities across China and conducted precise analysis using two-dimensional gas chromatography with electron capture negative ionization mass spectrometry (GC×GC-ECNI/MS). The probabilistic exposure assessment was performed through Monte Carlo simulation, and health risks were characterized using the margin of exposure (MOE) approach. The results revealed mean concentrations of 95.8 ng/g wet weight (range: 9.5–1542.4 ng/g ww) for SCCPs and 156.6 ng/g ww (range: 20.0–1517.9 ng/g ww) for MCCPs in chicken samples, with Jiangsu Province exhibiting significantly higher contamination levels compared to other regions (p < 0.001). The estimated mean dietary exposures through chicken consumption were 32.8 ng/kg bw/d for SCCPs and 52.6 ng/kg bw/d for MCCPs in the general Chinese population. Notably, children aged 3–6 years and the Consumer only showed the highest exposure levels. All calculated MOE values substantially exceeded the risk threshold of 1000, indicating no significant health concerns from current exposure to SCCPs and MCCPs through chicken consumption in China. Black spot disease substantially impairs both the aesthetic quality and commercial viability of affected Pingguoli pears. Previous studies have shown that Alternaria alternata and A. tenuissima are the pathogens that cause black spot disease. Essential oils represent novel alternatives to synthetic fungicides to control these pathogens. This study extracted Artemisia sieversiana essential oil (AsEO) by hydro-distillation using a crystal tower pure dew essential oil machine. The chemical compositions of AsEO were analyzed via gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). A total of 42 compounds were detected. 1,8-cineole, trans-caryophyllene, (1R,4S)-1,7,7-trimethylbicyclo [2.2.1] heptan-2-yl acetate, (±)-camphor, and β-myrcene were identified as the five main constituents. Moreover, the antifungal activity of AsEO was assessed against black spot on Yanbian Pingguoli pear in China. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) values were determined as 0.10% (v/v) and 0.12% (v/v), respectively. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis revealed that treatment with AsEO induced significant morphological aberrations in A. alternata and A. tenuissima mycelia, including surface roughening, hyphal collapse, and loss of structural integrity. Concurrently, a marked increase in alkaline phosphatase (AKP) enzyme activity and electrical conductivity was observed, a key indicator of cell wall and plasma membrane permeabilization and damage. When the concentration of AsEO was less than 120 µg/mL, there was no toxicity to keratinocytes (HaCaTs) and skin fibroblasts (NHSFs). This study screens the permeability of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) through edible films made of candelilla wax and guar gum, offering new insights into their role as aroma and moisture barriers. Four formulations (0.2–0.4% wax, 0.4–0.8% gum, and 0.2–0.3% glycerol) were tested using a fractional factorial design. VOC fluxes (one ester, two aldehydes, two terpenes, and one lactone) were monitored via headspace solid-phase microextraction coupled to gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (HS-SPME/GC-MS) in a diffusion cell and modeled kinetically. Wax-rich matrices compacted the network, reducing initial VOC transmission by up to 60%, while glycerol fine-tuned micromobility and selectivity. The formulation containing 0.4% wax, 0.8% gum, and 0.2% glycerol minimized time-dependent flux acceleration and reduced the cumulative permeability of both polar (hexanal) and non-polar (limonene) markers by 80%. Aroma loss decreased across all blends, correlating with improved water vapor control. These results establish quantitative criteria for developing sustainable edible coatings that balance aroma retention, water-barrier performance, and mechanical flexibility. Full article

This study investigates the Lower Cretaceous Madongshan Formation in the Liupanshan Basin, a classic saline lacustrine succession, to elucidate the key mechanisms for high-quality source rock development. An integrated approach combining organic geochemistry (Rock-Eval, Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry [GC-MS], δ13C) and inorganic elemental geochemistry (X-ray Fluorescence [XRF]) was applied to a well-characterized outcrop section. The results reveal that the Madongshan Formation contains mature, oil-prone source rocks dominated by Type II1 and II2 kerogen. Geochemical proxies consistently indicate deposition within an arid to semi-arid climate, which drove the formation of a stratified, saline-to-hypersaline water column with persistent bottom-water anoxia (Pristane/Phytane [Pr/Ph] < 0.5). Isotopic and biomarker data confirm a mixed source input, with an average contribution of approximately 55% from aquatic organisms supplemented by a significant terrestrial influx. Based on these findings, we propose a “Salinity-Driven Preservation” model. This model posits that climate-induced salinity played a critical role in establishing a persistent halocline, leading to an intensely anoxic “preservation factory” at the lake bottom. Current evidence suggests that this exceptional preservation efficiency was a pivotal factor compensating for moderate productivity to control organic matter enrichment. This study provides a robust framework for predicting source rock quality in the Liupanshan Basin and serves as a valuable analogue for other saline lacustrine systems. Full article

Background/Objectives: Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emerging as non-invasive biomarkers of metabolic and disease-related processes, yet their reliable detection from complex biological matrices such as urine remains analytically challenging. This study aimed to establish a robust, non-targeted headspace solid-phase microextraction gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (HS–SPME GC–MS) workflow optimized for very small-volume urinary samples. Methods: We systematically evaluated the effects of pH adjustment and NaCl addition on VOC extraction efficiency using a 75 µm CAR/PDMS fiber and a sample volume of only 0.75 mL. Method performance was further assessed using concentration-dependent experiments with representative VOC standards and by application to real human urine samples analyzed in technical triplicates. Results: Acidification to pH 3 markedly improved extraction performance, increasing both total signal intensity and the number of detectable VOCs, whereas alkaline conditions and additional NaCl produced only minor effects. Representative VOC standards showed compound-specific linear dynamic ranges with minimal carry-over within the relevant analytical range. Application to real urine samples confirmed high analytical reproducibility, with triplicates clustering tightly in principal component analysis and most metabolites exhibiting relative standard deviations below 25%. Conclusions: The optimized HS–SPME GC–MS method enables comprehensive, non-targeted urinary VOC profiling from limited sample volumes. This workflow provides a robust analytical foundation for exploratory volatilomics studies under sample-limited conditions and supports subsequent targeted method refinement once specific compounds or chemical classes have been prioritized. Grain aging during storage leads to quality deterioration and significant economic losses. Traditional analytical approaches are often labor-intensive, slow, and inadequate for modern intelligent grain storage management. This review summarizes recent advances in the intelligent discrimination of grain aging using volatile organic compound (VOC) fingerprints combined with machine learning (ML) techniques. It first outlines the biochemical mechanisms underlying grain aging and identifies VOCs as early and sensitive biomarkers for timely determination. The review then examines VOC determination methodologies, with a focus on headspace solid-phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS), for constructing volatile fingerprinting profiles, and discusses related method standardization. A central theme is the application of ML algorithms, including Partial Least Squares Discriminant Analysis (PLS-DA), Support Vector Machines (SVM), Random Forest (RF), and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN)) for feature extraction and pattern recognition in high-dimensional datasets, enabling effective discrimination of aging stages, spoilage types, and grain varieties. Despite these advances, key challenges remain, such as limited model generalizability, the lack of large-scale multi-source databases, and insufficient validation under real storage conditions. Finally, future directions are proposed that emphasize methodological standardization, algorithmic innovation, and system-level integration to support intelligent, non-destructive, real-time grain quality monitoring. This emerging framework provides a promising powerful pathway for enhancing global food security. Full article

Pile fermentation is a crucial process for developing the characteristic mellow taste and aged aroma of dark tea, yet the internal quality transformation mechanism of this process is still unclear. This study employed a high-sensitivity analytical platform based on gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to systematically investigate the dynamic interplay between key chemical components, enzyme activities, and volatile compounds during the pile fermentation of primary dark tea. Our findings revealed a significant decrease in ester-type catechins, crude protein, and protopectin, alongside a notable accumulation of non-ester-type catechins, gallic acid, and soluble components. The multi-enzyme system—comprising PPO/POD, pectinase/cellulase, and protease—cooperatively drove the oxidation of phenols, cell wall degradation, and the release of aromatic precursors. This was complemented by GC-MS analysis, which identified and quantified 103 volatile compounds across nine chemical classes. The total content of volatile compounds increased significantly, with alcohols, esters, and aldehydes/ketones being the dominant groups. Floral and fruity compounds such as linalool and geraniol accumulated continuously, while esters exhibited an initial increase followed by a decrease. Notably, carotenoid degradation products, including β-ionone, were significantly enriched during the later stages. This study revealed a “oxidation–hydrolysis–reconstruction” metabolic mechanism co-driven by microbial activity and a multi-enzyme system, providing a theoretical foundation for the precise regulation of pile fermentation and targeted quality improvement of primary dark tea. This study compares the extraction of oils and bioactive compounds from Acmella oleracea using supercritical CO2, pressurized R-134a, and propane under systematically designed experimental conditions. Extraction yields ranged from 1.16–3.35% for CO2, 1.90–2.35% for R-134a, and 1.30–5.42% for propane. Propane achieved the highest yields and the fastest plateau (~35 min), producing extracts dominated by unsaturated fatty acids (linoleic acid ≈ 85%). Supercritical CO2 generated the most diverse chemical profile, combining alkamides (spilanthol), triterpenoids (β-amyrone), and lipids, with a plateau at approximately 50 min, whereas R-134a selectively enriched β-amyrin acetate (~70%) with intermediate kinetics (~45 min). These yield values are typical for non-oilseed species, in which the low natural abundance of the target metabolites renders solvent selectivity more relevant than the total extract mass. Statistical modeling (R2 > 0.96) confirmed that pressure was the main driver of CO2 and propane extraction, whereas temperature dominated R-134a performance. The distinct selectivity patterns revealed by Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) indicate that each solvent generates compositionally different extracts aligned with specific industrial applications in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and nutraceuticals. The unified comparison of these three fluids under a consistent experimental design provides practical insights for rational solvent selection: propane favors unsaturated lipids, CO2 preserves multifunctional compositions, and R-134a targets triterpenoid esters, supporting the economic feasibility of producing enriched, solvent-free plant extracts. The growing problem of antimicrobial resistance emphasizes the urgent need for new and effective natural antimicrobial agents. This study assessed the antibacterial activity of twenty essential oils and one absolute against Escherichia coli and examined the relationship between their chemical composition and biological activity. The chemical profiles of the samples were determined using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS), and the resulting data were analysed using principal component analysis (PCA), discriminant analysis (DA), and partial least squares (PLS) methods to explore associations between composition and antibacterial activity. The results showed substantial variability among the tested essential oils, with those from Thymus vulgaris, Aniba rosaeodora, Syzygium aromaticum, Pimenta dioica, and the absolute of Evernia prunastri exhibiting the strongest activity. GC–MS analysis identified thymol, eugenol, and methyl atrarate as key bioactive constituents associated with strong antibacterial effects, while linalool, limonene, and α-terpineol were linked to moderate activity. Multivariate analyses provided further insight but were limited by data variability, highlighting compositional diversity rather than clear group separation. Overall, the findings demonstrate that essential oils are a promising source of natural antimicrobial agents and emphasise the importance of linking chemical composition with biological function to understand their potential therapeutic applications. This study aimed to analyze the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) for different rice aroma types using sensory evaluation, headspace solid-phase microextraction gas chromatography mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS), and gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS) techniques, and to explore the material basis for the flavor differences. Based on the sensory evaluation results, rice aroma was categorized into three types, distinguished by their unique aroma compounds. Type A was characterized by a prominent sweet, popcorn aroma, type B by a more prominent cereal and starchy flavor, and type C by a more complex aroma. Untargeted metabolomics analysis using HS-SPME-GC-MS identified and characterized 74 volatile compounds. A comparison of A versus B versus C revealed 8 key aroma compounds, primarily alkanes, aldehydes, ketones, alcohols, and heterocyclic compounds. (E)-2-Octenal, 6-Undecanone, 2-Acetyl-1h-pyrrole, and P-menthan-1-ol in type A gave it a better sweet aroma, Dodecane, 2,6,10-trimethyl-, 1-Octen-3-one, and 2-Methyldecane in type B gave it a better starchy and cereal flavor. 2-Acetyl-1h-pyrrole, Heptacosane, and 1-Propanol in type C contributed to a complex aroma. GC-IMS analysis showed that the fingerprints of rice with different aroma types were significantly different. The VOCs of aroma type A contained (+)-limonene, 2-methylpyrazine, 2-pentanone, ethyl butanoate, n-pentanal, styrene, 1-butanol, 3-methyl-, acetate, 1-hexanal, 1-pentanol, and 2-heptanone, which gave it a better sweet aroma. The VOCs of aroma type C contained 1-octen-3-ol, 2,6-dimethyl pyrazine, 2-acetylpyridine, and ethyl hexanoate, which gave it a better complex aroma. Full article
