In this paper, a novel anti-windup prescribed performance terminal sliding mode control method is proposed for the fixed-time tracking problem of a nonholonomic constrained mobile deicing manipulator system with model uncertainty and external disturbance. Firstly, a fixed-time preset performance function related to the initial error is proposed to constrain and transform the tracking error, so as to ensure that the tracking error of the system converges in a fixed time and has good transient and steady-state performance. Secondly, in order to accelerate the convergence to the equilibrium state, a fast terminal sliding mode surface with preset performance tracking error and a new fixed time reaching rate are constructed. By using Lyapunov analysis, the global fixed-time convergence of the scheme is theoretically verified. The control method is compared with the FTSMC method through simulation experiments, and the effectiveness of the designed control method is further verified. Full article

This paper proposes an adaptive wavelet neural network nonsingular fast terminal sliding mode control strategy based on a finite-time framework for a space robot system under external disturbances and model uncertainties. Firstly, the dynamic model of space robot is established based on the second Lagrange equation. Unlike sliding mode control, which converges asymptotically, terminal sliding mode control (TSMC) has been proposed to ensure finite-time convergence for a space robot system. Based on the aforementioned TSMC framework, the fast terminal sliding mode control (FTSMC) is proposed to enhance system convergence rate. However, TSMC exhibits a singularity issue attributed to the presence of negative fractional order. To avoid this issue, a nonsingular fast terminal sliding mode controller (NFTSMC) has been proposed. The controller is designed to integrate linear and nonlinear terms into a novel nonsingular fast terminal sliding mode surface. The method achieves fast finite-time convergence concurrently with improved robustness, while effectively avoiding singularities. To compensate for external disturbances and model uncertainties in the space robot system, this paper proposes the combination of wavelet neural network (WNN) for the real-time estimation of lumped uncertainties. Network parameters are dynamically adjusted via an adaptive law to mitigate chattering effectively and enhance trajectory tracking precision. Utilizing Lyapunov stability theory and numerical simulations, the space robot system’s stability is rigorously proven and the controller effectiveness is validated. Compared with the traditional NFTSMC, the proposed control strategy reduces the convergence time by 20.74%. In the case of trajectory tracking comparison, the root mean square error (RMSE) improves by 35.85%, the mean tracking error improves by 63.29%, the integral of absolute error (IAE) improves by 29.37%, and the integral of time-weighted absolute error (ITAE) improves by 93.06%. Additionally, a comparative simulation with RBFNN is included in this paper. Compared with RBFNN, the proposed control strategy reduces input torque energy consumption by 77.36% and improves control smoothness by 87.03%, quantitatively demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy. This paper presents a systematic experimental comparison of three sliding-mode-based current control strategies—traditional sliding mode control (SMC), fast terminal sliding mode control (FTSMC), and super-twisting sliding mode control (STSMC)—applied to a grid-connected five-level active neutral point clamped flying capacitor (5L-ANPC-FC) inverter. Unlike existing studies that typically investigate a single controller or topology, this work provides a fair, hardware-validated benchmark under identical operating conditions, enabling a clear assessment of convergence speed, harmonic performance, robustness, and implementation complexity. All controllers are designed within a unified framework and their stability is rigorously analyzed using Lyapunov theory. Experimental evaluations are conducted under steady-state operation, step changes in reference current, grid-voltage sag/swell, and DC-link voltage variations. The results demonstrate that while all three controllers ensure robust current tracking and inherent DC-side capacitor voltage balancing without additional control loops, FTSMC achieves the lowest grid-current total harmonic distortion (THD) and fastest convergence. STSMC effectively suppresses chattering, and traditional SMC offers a simple yet reliable baseline solution. The presented findings provide practical design guidelines for selecting appropriate sliding-mode controllers in high-performance multilevel inverter applications. Among the assessed control techniques, FTSMC has the most rapid dynamic response, characterized by a rise time of 0.1 ms and a minimal grid-current THD of 1.95%, indicating exceptional steady-state and transient performance. STSMC markedly diminishes chattering and ripple, attaining a THD of 2.04% with enhanced waveform smoothness relative to traditional SMC. Conversely, traditional SMC offers a more straightforward implementation but demonstrates elevated ripple and THD levels of around 2.29%, along with a peak current inaccuracy of 6–8%. The results underscore the trade-offs between implementation simplicity, dynamic responsiveness, and harmonic performance of the evaluated control techniques. Full article

Regarding the high susceptibility problem of the Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) to various uncertain factors, including load variations, parameter perturbations, and external interferences in the ship’s electric propulsion system, this paper presents a non-singular fast terminal composite sliding mode control (NFTCSMC) strategy based on the improved exponential reaching law. This strategy integrates the system’s state variables and the power function of the sliding mode surface into the traditional exponential reaching law, not only enhancing the sliding mode reaching rate but also effectively mitigating system chattering. Additionally, a sliding mode disturbance observer is developed to compensate for both internal and external disturbances in real time, further enhancing the system’s robustness. Finally, the proposed control strategy is experimentally validated using the rapid control prototyping (RCP) technology applied on a semi-physical experimental platform for ship electric propulsion. Experimental results indicate that, compared to traditional proportional–integral (PI), sliding mode control (SMC), and fast terminal sliding mode control (FTSMC) strategies, the NFTCSMC strategy enhances the propulsion and anti-interference capabilities of the propulsion motor, thereby improving the dynamic performance of the ship’s electric propulsion system. This paper presents a novel control framework for enhancing the attitude stabilization of multirotor UAVs using Control Moment Gyros (CMGs) and a Disturbance Robust Drive Law (DRDL). Due to their lightweight and compact structure, multirotor UAVs are highly susceptible to disturbances such as wind, making it challenging to achieve stable attitude control using rotor thrust alone. To address this issue, we employ CMGs to provide robust attitude control and apply Fast Terminal Sliding Mode Control (FTSMC) to ensure fast and accurate convergence within a finite time. The combination of CMGs’ torque amplification capability with the DRDL enables the system to effectively avoid singularities and maintain stable control performance in the presence of disturbances. Simulation results demonstrate that the CMG-equipped hexarotor utilizing the DRDL rapidly converges to the target attitude despite external disturbances, while minimizing oscillations in both motor speed and gimbal movement. Additionally, compared to the pseudo-inverse control method, the proposed approach significantly improves singularity avoidance and disturbance mitigation. The proposed control framework enhances the stability and reliability of UAV operations and demonstrates its potential for high-performance control in challenging disturbance environments. In this study, the design of an adaptive neural network-based fixed-time control system for a novel coaxial trans-domain hybrid aerial–underwater vehicle (HAUV) is investigated. A radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) approximation strategy-based adaptive fixed-time terminal sliding mode control (AFTSMC) scheme is proposed to solve the problems of the dynamic nonlinearity, model parameter perturbation, and multiple external disturbances of coaxial HAUV trans-media motion. A complete six-degrees-of-freedom model for a continuous water–air cross-domain model is first established based on the hyperbolic tangent transition function, and, subsequently, based on a basic framework of FTSMC, a fixed-time and fast-convergence controller is designed to track the target position and attitude signals. To reduce the dependence of the control scheme on precise model parameters, an RBFNN approximator is integrated into the sliding mode controller for the online model identification of the aggregate uncertainties of the coaxial HAUV, such as nonlinear unmodeled dynamics and external disturbances. At the same time, an adaptive technique is used to approximate the upper bound of the robust switching term gain in the controller, which further offsets the estimation error of the RBFNN and effectively attenuates the chattering effect. Based on Lyapunov stability theory, it is proven that the tracking error can converge in a fixed time. The effectiveness and superiority of the proposed control strategy are verified by several sets of simulation results obtained under typical working conditions. Full article

Barrier-function-based adaptive fast-terminal sliding-mode control approaches have been devised to enhance the precision of speed regulation of permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs). Firstly, the speed loop utilizes fast-terminal sliding-mode control, which contributes to a faster convergence rate and enhances the robustness of the system. By adopting this control technique, the system can quickly reach the desired speed setpoint and effectively handle disturbances. Secondly, an adaptive law based on the barrier function is employed to adjust the control gain adaptively. The proposed adaptive law considers the magnitude of the disturbance and effectively mitigates chattering resulting from excessive switching gain. Unlike conventional control methods, the design of the adaptive fast-terminal sliding-mode control does not require attaining the upper limit of the lumped disturbances. Experimental results are presented to validate the proposed approach. These results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the conventional terminal sliding mode control technique in terms of handling both external and internal disturbances. Full article

In addressing the control of asynchronous motors in the remote conductivity of fertigation machines, this study proposes a joint control strategy based on the Fast Terminal Sliding Mode Control-Disturbance Observer (FTSMC-DO) system for asynchronous motors. The goal is to enhance the dynamic performance and disturbance resistance of asynchronous motors, particularly under low-speed operating conditions. The approach involves refining the two-degree-of-freedom internal model controller using fractional-order functions to explicitly separate the controller’s robustness and tracking capabilities. To mitigate the motor’s sensitivity to external disturbances during variable speed operations, a load disturbance observer is introduced, employing hyperbolic tangent and Fal functions for real-time monitoring and compensation, seamlessly integrated into the sliding mode controller. To address issues related to low-speed chattering typically associated with sliding mode controllers, this study introduces a revised non-singular fast terminal sliding mode surface. Additionally, guided by fuzzy control principles, the study enables real-time selection of sliding mode approaching law parameters. Experimental results from the asynchronous motor control platform demonstrate that FTSMC-DO control significantly reduces adjustment time and speed fluctuations during operation, minimizing the impact of load disturbances on the system. The system exhibits robust disturbance rejection, improved robustness, and enhanced control capability. Furthermore, field tests validate the effectiveness of the FTSMC-DO system in regulating remote electrical conductivity (EC) levels. The control time is observed to be less than 120 s, overshoot less than 16.1%, and EC regulation within 0.2 mS·cm−1 over a pipeline distance of 120 m. The FTSMC-DO control consistently achieves the desired EC levels with minimal fluctuation and overshoot, outperforming traditional PID and SMC methods. This high level of precision is crucial for ensuring optimal nutrient delivery and efficient water usage in agricultural irrigation systems, highlighting the system’s potential as a valuable tool in modern, sustainable farming practices. To overcome the sensitivity of voltage source inverters (VSIs) to parameter perturbations and their susceptibility to load variations, a fast terminal sliding mode control (FTSMC) method is proposed as the core and combined with an improved nonlinear extended state observer (NLESO) to resist aggregate system perturbations. Firstly, a mathematical model of the dynamics of a single-phase voltage type inverter is constructed using a state-space averaging approach. Secondly, an NLESO is designed to estimate the lumped uncertainty using the saturation properties of hyperbolic tangent functions. Finally, a sliding mode control method with a fast terminal attractor is proposed to improve the dynamic tracking of the system. It is shown that the NLESO guarantees convergence of the estimation error and effectively preserves the initial derivative peak. The FTSMC enables the output voltage with high tracking accuracy and low total harmonic distortion and enhances the anti-disturbance ability. Full article

The application of control systems in precision irrigation is critical to ensure the accurate distribution of water in crops under various uncertainties. Shifts in the loading of the water supply on the control valve can be a significant uncertainty. Changes in weather and the uncertainty of the water level in the reservoir are also challenging issues. Sliding Mode Control (SMC) is a robust control technique that is simple to apply to deal with uncertainty, while Fast Terminal Sliding Mode Control (FTSMC) has the benefit of the rapid convergence. The DC electric motor, which is a common component of electric control valves, can be employed in designing control techniques for precision irrigation applications. This study aims to design a proposed experimental-based method, namely FTSMC for valve regulation under water load uncertainty for precision irrigation application. Modification of the signum function should be used to eliminate the chattering effect in real experiments.The results of experiments showed that the proposed method was superior to the conventional Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) and traditional SMC techniques in terms of overshoot, convergence rate and error. Because of those reasons, the FTSMC approach should be implemented on control valves against load uncertainty in precision irrigation applications. Full article

This paper proposes an adaptive barrier fast terminal sliding mode control (ABFTSMC) approach for quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). Its main objectives are to mitigate the external disturbances, parametric uncertainties, and actuator faults. An adaptive barrier function is considered in the design to ensure the finite-time convergence of the output variables to a predefined locality of zero, independent of the disturbance bounds. A fast terminal sliding mode control (FTSMC) approach is designed to speed up the convergence rate in both reaching and sliding phases. The design considers hyperbolic tangent functions in the adaptive control law to drastically reduce the chattering effect, typically associated with the standard SMC. The performance of the proposed approach was assessed using a quadrotor UAV subject to external disturbances and sudden actuator faults. The obtained results show that the trajectory and the sliding surface converge to the origin in a finite time, without being affected by the high disturbance and actuator faults. In this method, due to the substitution of the discontinuous function by the hyperbolic tangent function, the chattering effect has also been highly reduced. Full article

This article presents a formation tracking control method for the operation of multi-agent systems under disturbances. This study aims to ensure that the followers of a quadcopter converge into the desired formation while the center formation of the follower quadcopters tracks the leader’s trajectory within a finite time. The distributed finite-time formation control problem is first investigated using the fast terminal sliding mode control (FTSMC) theory. A disturbance observer is then integrated into the FTSMC to overcome the model uncertainties and bounded disturbances. Subsequently, the Lyapunov function is proposed to ensure the stability of the system. It is shown that formation tracking control can be achieved even in the presence of disturbances. Simulation and experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed formation tracking control method compared to existing ones. Full article

To advance the active safety performance for vehicles, especially in extreme conditions, an active rear steering (ARS) control system is designed in this paper. A driver model is established to simulate the driving behaviour of a human driver who is in charge of the front steering control. In the ARS control system, the sliding mode predictive control (SMPC) approach is applied to the ARS controller design based on a 3 degrees of freedom (DoF) nonlinear vehicle model. In the ARS controller design, four kinds of active safety performances are considered, namely, path-tracking performance, handling performance, lateral stability, and rollover prevention. Furthermore, the priority of the four kinds of active safety performance is defined. According to the control priority, an event-triggered mechanism (ETM) is designed to adjust the SMPC controller of the ARS system to address different driving conditions. Finally, two simulation cases are conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed ARS system. The results show that the ARS system is in favour of the active safety performance advancement for human drivers. Additionally, the comparative simulation indicates that the SMPC algorithm is superior to the fast terminal sliding mode control (FTSMC) algorithm. Full article

A neural network-based global fast terminal sliding mode control method with non-linear differentiator (NNFTSMC) is proposed in this paper to design the dynamic control system for three-axis stabilized platform. The dynamic model of the three-axis stabilized platform is established with various uncertainties and unknown external disturbances. To overcome the external disturbance and reduce the output chatter of the classical sliding mode control (SMC) system, the improved global fast terminal sliding mode control method using the nonlinear differentiator and neural network techniques is proposed and implemented in the three-axis stabilized platform system. The global fast terminal sliding mode controller can make the controlled state approach to the sliding surface in a finite time. To eliminate the system output chatter, the nonlinear differentiator is employed to obtain the differentiation of the signal. The neural network is introduced to estimate the uncertainties disturbances to improve the stability and the robustness of the control system. The stability and the robustness of the proposed control method are analyzed using the Lyapunov theory. The performance of the proposed NNFTSMC method is verified and compared with the classical proportion-integral-differential (PID) controller, SMC controller and fast terminal sliding mode controller (FTSMC) through the computer simulation. Results validate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed NNFTSMC method in presence of uncertainties and unknown external disturbances. Full article

In this paper, a nonlinear robust Fast Terminal Sliding Mode Controller (FTSMC) is designed to control and stabilize a new reconfigurable Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) in the presence of uncertain and variable parameters. The studied UAV is an over-actuated system due the number of actuator control inputs. It can modify the length and the angles between its four arms in different ways, which result an important variation in its Center of Gravity (CoG), inertia, and control matrix. The proposed FTSMC offers many advantages such as, reaching the desired states in a finite-time unlike the conventional sliding mode, robustness vis-a-vis uncertain and unknown parameters, fast convergence towards the sliding surface, high accuracy and reducing the chattering phenomena. Furthermore, the closed-loop stability of the this UAV is ensured by the Lyapunov theory. The eight actuators used to rotate and extend the UAV arms are controlled by simple Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) controllers. Lastly, the robustness and efficiency of the proposed controller are evaluated through a flight scenario, where the UAV geometric parameters are variable over time. Full article
