The induction of type I interferon (IFN) via intracellular nucleic acid sensors may be useful in preventing viral infections. However, little is known about the effect of natural plant materials on sensor responses. We previously found that cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum (L.) Maton) seed extract (CSWE) enhanced type I IFN expression and prevented influenza virus infection. In this study, we investigated the effect of CSWE on type I IFN responses using intracellular nucleic acid sensor molecules. Human lung epithelial A549 cells were treated with CSWE and transfected with poly(dA:dT) or poly(I:C) using lipofection. CSWE and 1,8-cineole, the major CSWE components, dose-dependently induced type I IFNs and IFN-stimulated genes in both poly(dA:dT)- and poly(I:C)-transfected A549 cells. The type I IFN-enhancing effect of CSWE was dependent on the stimulator of interferon genes (STING), whereas the effect of 1,8-cineole was independent of STING and mediated by the down-regulation of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD)-inducible poly-ADP-ribose polymerase expression. Our study suggests that CSWE has the potential to act as a beneficial antiviral agent by enhancing homeostatic type I IFN production. Full article

The two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae, is one of the polyphagous pests of several crops and forestry, resistant to numerous conventional chemicals. Due to the negative side effects of harmful chemical pesticides, such as environmental pollution, and risks to human health, the introduction of effective and low-risk alternatives is essential. The promising pesticidal effects of essential oils (EOs) isolated from Artemisia annua have been documented in recent studies. In the present study, the acaricidal effects of an A. annua EO, along with its two dominant monoterpenoids, 1,8-cineole and camphor, were investigated against adults of T. urticae. Artemisia annua EO, 1,8-cineole, and camphor, with 24 h-LC50 values of 0.289, 0.533, and 0.64 µL/L air, respectively, had significant toxicity by fumigation against T. urticae adults. Along with lethality, A. annua EO and monoterpenoids had significant inhibitory effects on the activity of detoxifying enzymes, including α- and β-esterases, glutathione S-transferases, and cytochrome P-450 monooxygenase. According to the findings of the present study, A. annua EO and its two dominant monoterpenoids, 1,8-cineole and camphor, with significant toxicity and inhibitory effects on detoxifying enzymes, can be introduced as available, effective, and eco-friendly acaricides in the management of T. urticae. Callistemon citrinus has shown antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in certain tissues. However, its impact on the brain remains unproven. This study investigates the effect of C. citrinus extract and phytosomes on the oxidative status of the brains of rats fed a high-fat–fructose diet (HFD). Fifty-four male Wistar rats were randomly divided into nine groups (n = 6). Groups 1, 2, and 3 received a standard chow diet; Group 2 also received the vehicle, and Group 3 was supplemented with C. citrinus extract (200 mg/kg). Groups 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 received a high-fat diet (HFD). Additionally, groups 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 were supplemented with orlistat at 5 mg/kg, C. citrinus extract at 200 mg/kg, and phytosomes loaded with C. citrinus at doses of 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg, respectively. Administration was oral for 16 weeks. Antioxidant enzymes, biomarkers of oxidative stress, and fatty acid content in the brain were determined. A parallel artificial membrane permeability assay (PAMPA) was employed to identify compounds that can cross the intestinal and blood–brain barriers. The HFD group (group 4) increased body weight and adipose tissue, unlike the other groups. The brain fatty acid profile showed slight variations in all of the groups. On the other hand, group 4 showed a decrease in the activities of antioxidant enzymes SOD, CAT, and PON. It reduced GSH level, while increasing GPx activity as well as MDA, 4-HNE, and AOPP levels. C. citrinus extract and phytosomes restore the antioxidant enzyme activities and mitigate oxidative stress in the brain. C. citrinus modulates oxidative stress in brain tissue through 1.8-cineole and α-terpineol, which possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Full article

This study evaluated the influence of compost and bioinoculants (mycorrhizal fungi and plant growth-promoting bacteria) on the yield and composition of essential oil extracted from Tanacetum balsamita L. over two growing seasons. The plants were cultivated under four treatments: compost, bioinoculants, a combination (bioinoculants + compost), and a control. At each harvest, essential oil was extracted from fresh leaves via stem-flow distillation and analyzed using gas chromatography coupled with single quadrupole mass spectrometry. Twenty to twenty-four compounds were identified. Based on the dominant terpene derivative, the results indicated that Tanacetum balsamita L. cultivated in Italy belongs to “camphor” chemotype, a pharmacologically active compound known for its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic properties. Moreover, three compounds, α-, β-phellandrene and myrtenol, were identified as typical of Tanacetum balsamita L. cultivated in Italy. Treatment effects were significant for some compounds (camphor, borneol, terpinen-4-ol, α-terpineol, dehydro sabinene ketone, and 3-thujanol), and the interaction between treatment and year was significant for a few compounds (borneol, terpinen-4-ol, dehydro sabinene ketone, 1,8-cineol, and 3-thujanol). These results emphasize the need to account for seasonal variation and underline the necessity of a deeper understanding of how experimental factors interact with them, especially in long-term essential oil studies. Annona amazonica R.E. Fries (synonyms Annona amazonica var. lancifolia R.E. Fries), popularly known in Brazil as “envireira”, is a tropical tree belonging to the Annonaceae family and is traditionally used as a food source. In this work, the in vitro and in vivo anti-liver cancer effects of essential oil (EO) from A. amazonica leaves were investigated for the first time. The chemical composition of the EO was evaluated via GC–MS and GC–FID. The alamar blue assay was used to evaluate the cytotoxicity of EOs against different cancerous and noncancerous cell lines. Cell cycle analyses, YO-PRO-1/PI staining, and rhodamine 123 staining were performed via flow cytometry in HepG2 cells treated with EO. The in vivo antitumor activity of EO was evaluated in NSG mice that were xenografted with HepG2 cells and treated with EO at a dose of 60 mg/kg. The major constituents (>5%) of the EO were (E)-caryophyllene (32.01%), 1,8-cineole (13.93%), α-copaene (7.77%), α-humulene (7.15%), and α-pinene (5.13%). EO increased apoptosis and proportionally decreased the number of viable HepG2 cells. The induction of DNA fragmentation and cell shrinkage together with a significant reduction in the ΔΨm in EO-treated HepG2 cells confirmed that EO can induce apoptosis. A significant 39.2% inhibition of tumor growth in vivo was detected in EO-treated animals. These data indicate the anti-liver cancer potential of EO from A. amazonica leaves. Full article

The prevention of biofilm formation and algal biodeterioration on building materials, particularly on cultural heritage sites, is a growing concern. Due to regulatory restrictions on conventional algicidal biocides in Europe, natural alternatives such as essential oils are gaining interest for their potential use in heritage conservation. This study evaluates the anti-algal activity of Salvia officinalis and Equisetum arvense (essential oils, hydrolates, and extracts) against a mixed culture of five green algae species (Bracteacoccus minor, Stichococcus bacillaris, Klebsormidium nitens, Chloroidium saccharophilum, and Diplosphaera chodatii). The plant materials were processed using hydrodistillation and solvent extraction, followed by chemical characterization through gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Biological efficacy was assessed by measuring algal growth inhibition, changes in biomass colour, chlorophyll a concentration, and fluorescence. S. officinalis yielded higher extract quantities (extraction yield: 23%) than E. arvense and contained bioactive compounds such as thujone, camphor, and cineole, which correlated with its strong anti-algal effects. The essential oil of S. officinalis demonstrated the highest efficacy, significantly inhibiting biofilm formation (zones of inhibition: 15–94 mm) and photosynthetic activity at 0.5% concentration (reduction in chlorophyll a concentration 90–100%), without causing visible discolouration of treated surfaces (∆E < 2). These findings highlight the potential of S. officinalis essential oil as a natural, effective, and material-safe algicidal biocide for the sustainable protection of cultural heritage sites. Colibacillosis is a poultry disease caused by the pathogenic bacterium Escherichia coli (E. coli). This study is an experimental cross-sectional study using herbal-based test materials from Javanese cardamom and turmeric rhizome as treatments to replace the role of antibiotics that experience drug resistance in several types of bacteria. A total of 32 samples were utilized in this study, separated into two control groups and six treatment groups. The analysis was carried out by an histopathological examination of the lung organs using H&E and ImageJ staining to calculate the area of the slide image. The data results were analyzed statistically with one-way ANOVA method and qualitatively. The outcome of the statistical test showed that the differences were not statistically significant p value = 0.922 [p > 0.05] in all groups, and findings from qualitative histopathology showed morphological differences in the alveoli, parabronchi, and vasculature in the lung organs. The mosquito Aedes aegypti is the vector responsible for the transmission of important arboviruses such as dengue fever, Chikungunya, Zika virus, and yellow fever. These diseases affect millions of people and exert impacts on healthcare systems throughout the world. Given the increasing resistance to synthetic insecticides, essential oils from plants constitute an ecologically viable alternative for the control of this vector. The aim of the present study was to investigate the larvicidal activity of the essential oil (EO), aqueous extract, rutin, and hydrolate from the leaves of Myrciaria floribunda against Aedes aegypti larvae in the initial L4 stage. The yield of EO was 0.47%. Thirty-seven chemical constituents were identified and quantified using chromatographic methods. The major constituents were (E)-caryophyllene (27.35%), 1,8-cineole (11.25%), β-selinene (4.92%), and α-muurolene (4.92%). In the larvicidal tests, the lethal concentration (LC50) was 201.73 ppm for the essential oil, 15.85% for the aqueous extract, and 22.46 ppm for rutin. The hydrolate had no larvicidal activity. The compounds that exhibited larvicidal activity against Aedes aegypti constitute a promising option for the development of natural formulations to diminish the propagation of this vector. Background/Objectives: Growing antibiotic resistance is one of the most significant problems of current medicine. Various research efforts are focused on the search for new substances and their combinations as potential solutions to this problem. Essential oil compounds (EOCs) are considered promising candidates in this regard. However, the interactions between these natural compounds remain understudied. This study conducted a preliminary evaluation of the antimicrobial action of various commercial EOCs (1,8-cineole, eugenol, linalyl acetate, (-)-α-pinene, limonene, α-terpineol, DL-menthol, geraniol, farnesol, carvacrol, and myrcene) alone and in combination (n = 56) against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus strain (ATCC 43300). Methods: The following parameters were studied: antibacterial activity of EOCs alone and in combination using microdilution and checkerboard assays. Results: After the initial screening, geraniol, farnesol, linalyl acetate, carvacrol, (−)-α-pinene, α-terpineol, 1,8-cineole, and eugenol exhibited antibacterial activity against the tested strain and were, therefore, selected for further evaluation in the checkerboard assay. The checkerboard assay revealed 10 synergistic interactions, with farnesol demonstrating the highest number of synergistic combinations among the tested compounds. The results highlighted its high synergistic potential in combination with eugenol, linalyl acetate, (-)-α-pinene, α-terpineol, geraniol, and carvacrol. Conclusions: In conclusion, the results help elucidate the different interactions between EOCs and may be helpful in further applications of natural compounds as antimicrobial agents in wound dressings. Overall, the most promising compound was found to be farnesol. Full article

Spodoptera frugiperda is a major agricultural pest worldwide, causing significant economic loss to maize crops. Its control largely depends on synthetic pesticides, which contribute to resistance development, harm non-target organisms, and lead to environmental degradation. Essential oils and their main components offer a more sustainable and ecologically sound alternative for the management of S. frugiperda. This study evaluated the effects of selected essential oils and their bioactive compounds on the survival and behavior of S. frugiperda using toxicity and preference assays. Peppermint essential oil and its major constituent, pulegone, significantly reduced the survival of S. frugiperda, with effects similar to those caused by synthetic insecticides. Eucalyptus essential oil and its main compound, 1,8-cineole, also influenced the behavior of S. frugiperda, suggesting potential for use in repellents. These findings highlight the use of essential oils and their main constituents/active constituents as bioinsecticides and their integration into environmentally friendly pest management strategies. Compositional Variability of Essential Oils and Their Bioactivity in Native and Invasive Erigeron Species

To date, various species of Erigeron genus have been used both in the ethnopharmacology of numerous nations across the world and in contemporary herbal practices. The objective of this study is to revise the phytochemical data on the essential oils (EOs) of various fleabanes species and to evaluate the variability of their biological activities. Up to June 2025, this review provides an updated overview of 105 literature sources (published during last 25 years) related to 14 Erigeron sp. (native, naturalized, or invasive) which have been investigated extensively and are of the greatest significance. It summarizes the compositional variability of the EOs and their pharmacological and toxic effects, such as anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antiproliferative, skin regeneration, antioxidant, antifungal, antibacterial, insecticidal, larvicidal, repellent, and allelopathic activity. The EOs of each Erigeron species were characterized, and a chemical structure of 43 major constituents is presented herein. The most characteristic and prevalent compounds were found to be limonene, δ-3-carene, matricaria ester, lachnophyllum ester, germacrene D, β-caryophyllene, β-farnesene, α-bergamotene, allo-aromadendrene, etc., in the EOs from the E. acris, E. annuus, E. bonariensis, E. canadensis, E. floribundus E. mucronatus, and E. speciosus plants. Major constituents, such as borneol, bornyl acetate, modhephen-8-β-ol, cis-arteannuic alcohol, β-caryophyllene, and τ-cadinol, were found in the oils of E. graveolens (Inula graveolens). A paucity of data concerning E. incanus EOs was revealed, with the prevalence of 3-hydroxy-4-methoxy cinammic acid and thymol acetate noted in the oils. The EOs from E. multiradiatus and E. sublyratus were comprised mainly of matricaria and lachnophyllum esters. The available data on EOs of E. ramosus is limited, but the main constituents are known to be α-humulene, 1,8-cineole, eugenol, and globulol. The EOs containing appreciable amounts of matricaria and lachnophyllum esters exhibited strong anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, larvicidal, and repellent activities. Repellence is also related to borneol, bornyl acetate, caryophyllene derivatives, τ-cadinol, modhephen-8-β-ol, and cis-arteannuic alcohol. Cytotoxicity was determined due to the presence of limonene, δ-3-carene, α- and β-farnesene, (E)-β-ocimene, ledene oxide, sesquiphellandrene, and dendrolasin in the fleabanes EOs. Skin regeneration and antifungal properties were related to germacrene D; and anti-inflammatory effects were determined due to high amounts of limonene (E)-β-ocimene, lachnophyllum ester, and germacrene D. The antimicrobial properties of the oils were conditioned by appreciable quantities of limonene, β-pinene, 1,8-cineole, carvacrol, thymol acetae, β-eudesmol, 2,6,7,7α-tetrahydro-1,5-dimethyl-1H-indene-3-carboxaldehyde, caryophyllene and its oxide, allo-aromadendrene, α-humulene, farnesene, carvacrol, and eugenol. This review provides a foundation for further studies on volatile secondary metabolites to explore the potential sources of new biologically active compounds in Erigeron sp. Full article

Intraspecific Variability of Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium L.) Occurring in Poland in Respect of Developmental and Chemical Traits

The aim of this study was to determine the intraspecific variability among 11 wild-growing populations of wormwood (Artemisia absinthium L.) originating from Central Europe and preserved in the Polish Genebank Collection. The populations were introduced into ex situ conditions, and assessed in terms of selected developmental and chemical traits (essential oil, phenolic acids, polyphenols, and tannins content). Developmental observations and harvest of raw materials were carried out in the second year of plant vegetation, at the beginning of flowering. The populations exhibited significant differences. The greatest variability was observed in the number of shoots per plant (38–51) and dry mass of herb per plant (0.83–1.60 kg). Essential oil (EO) content ranged from 0.75 to 1.69 g/100 g dry weight (DW). A total of 41 compounds were identified in the EOs, with oxygenated monoterpenes (such as sabinyl acetate, cis-chrysanthenol, chrysantenyl acetate, 1,8-cineole, α- and β-thujone) as dominants, showing considerable variation among populations. Based on the EO profiles, several chemotypes were distinguished, mainly (1) a pure sabinyl acetate chemotype; (2) mixed chemotypes with sabinyl acetate accompanied by β-myrcene, cis-chrysanthenol, chrysanthenyl acetate, or 1,8-cineole; and (3) a thujone chemotype. The total content of phenolic acids (expressed as caffeic acid equivalent), tannins, and polyphenols (as pyrogallol equivalent) varied significantly, too (0.37–0.50; 0.10–0.26; 0.58–0.79%, respectively). The results confirm a high level of intraspecific variability in both developmental and chemical traits of A. absinthium populations originating from Poland. This diversity may be valuable for future breeding programs and for the selection of populations with desired phytochemical profiles for medicinal, food, and agricultural applications. It is worth noting that the floristic diversity among populations indicates the habitat heterogeneity, ranging from natural or semi-natural (populations 1, 6) to more anthropogenically influenced ones (populations 2, 4, 5, 7–11). Monoterpenes and their derivatives are important starting compounds in the design of new biologically active substances. In particular, cineole, isolated from eucalyptus essential oil, exhibits a wide range of biological activities. Here, the synthesis of new heterocyclic compounds containing a cineole fragment by the acid-catalyzed condensation of α-pinene-derived 8-hydroxy-6-hydroxymethyllimonene with monoterpene aldehydes was carried out for the first time. The reactions of 8-hydroxy-6-hydroxymethyllimonene with cuminaldehyde, perillylaldehyde, myrtenal, citral, and geranial were studied in the presence of heterogeneous K10 clay or Lewis acid BF3·Et2O. The main products of these reactions were compounds with the methanopyrano[4,3-b]pyran scaffold having a 1,8-cineole fragment. As a result of this work, five new compounds with the methanopyrano[4,3-b]pyran scaffold were synthesized. The use of BF3·Et2O led to an increase in the yields of target products, compared with the results obtained on K10 clay. Full article

Development of Pesto Sauce with Moringa Leaves and Baru Almonds: A Strategy to Incorporate Underutilized Ingredients with Nutritional and Sensory Viability

The growing demand for healthy and sensorially pleasing foods is accompanied by increasing sustainability concerns among consumers and industry. Therefore, exploring native and underutilized resources for traditional preparations is important. This study evaluated the incorporation of Moringa oleifera leaves and baru almonds (Dipteryx alata) in pesto sauce, comparing them to the traditional recipe regarding composition, color, total phenolics, volatiles, sensory characteristics, and acceptability. The following four formulations were developed: basil with cashew nuts (B/CN); basil with baru almonds (B/BA); and two versions with 50% basil replaced by moringa, combined with cashew (BM/CN) or baru (BM/BA). BM/BA presented the highest protein content (9.0%), compared to B/CN (7.9%). BM/CN showed a greener color. BM/CN and BM/BA showed total phenolics and antioxidant capacities similar to B/CN. BM/BA showed elevated condensed tannins (113.28 mg CE/100 g). All samples contained 1,8-Cineole and linalool, key to the aroma of basil. Pesto with moringa and/or baru showed good sensory acceptance, rated as “liked moderately”, with no difference from the conventional version (p > 0.05). There were no differences in the basil aroma, nutty flavor, or greasiness. Pesto sauce is a promising matrix for incorporating regional, underused ingredients such as moringa leaves and baru almonds, expanding their potential in new food development. Full article

Phytochemical Composition and Evaluation of Antimicrobial Activities of Five Salvia Species

In this study, the phytochemical composition and antimicrobial efficacy of five Türkiye native Salvia species (S. albimaculata, S. blepharochlaena, S. palaestina, S. virgata, and S. absconditiflora (syn. S. cryptantha) were investigated. The essential oils isolated with yields ranging from 0.2% to 0.66% were assessed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The major constituents were found to be α-pinene (up to 12.0% in S. albimaculata), camphor (up to 28.5% in S. blepharochlaena), borneol (up to 19.5% in S. virgata), 1,8-cineole (30.2% in S. absconditiflora), and linalool (26.5% in S. palaestina). Methanol extracts were produced with yields ranging from 8.2% to 9.5% and examined via liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and isolated phenolic acids (e.g., rosmarinic acid and caffeic acid) and flavonoids (luteolin and apigenin). Rosmarinic acid emerged as the dominant common compound in all the species. Antimicrobial testing against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and Candida microorganisms showed potent activity: S. blepharochlaena essential oil showed good antifungal activity against C. utilis, with a MIC value of 31.25 µg/mL, while S. palaestina and S. virgata extracts showed antibacterial activity against Bacillus and Staphylococcus strains. This detailed study broadened the chemotaxonomic profile of Turkish Salvia species and listed possible antimicrobial agents. Full article
