End-of-life (EoL) continuous glass fibre-reinforced polyamide 6 composites (cGF/PA6) are commonly recycled by shredding and milling, followed by injection moulding, often resulting in lower mechanical properties of second-generation products, primarily due to fibre length reduction. This study investigates the thermomechanical reprocessing of cGF/PA6 laminates via compression moulding, aiming to retain maximum mechanical performance by preserving the fibre length. Two types of 2/2 twill glass fibre-reinforced anionically polymerised polyamide 6 laminates (cGF/APA6), with either a reactive sizing agent (RS) or a non-reactive sizing agent (nRS), were reprocessed at two different temperatures, i.e., at 180 °C (between the glass transition temperature (Tg) and the melting temperature (Tm) of PA6) and 230 °C (above the melting temperature (Tm) of PA6). The influence of reprocessing on matrix crystallinity, thermomechanical properties, microstructure, and flexural performance was investigated. The results revealed that reprocessing at both temperatures led to an improvement in matrix crystallinity, retention of the desirable α-crystalline phases, and an elevated Tg (glass transition temperature) in both reprocessed laminates. Additionally, reprocessing at 180 °C maintained the flexural performance in both, whereas reprocessing at 230 °C led to nearly 20% improvement in flexural strength for the RS laminate. The microstructural analysis of the failed flexural specimens showed matrix-coated fibre surfaces, highlighting retained fibre–matrix adhesion. Overall, the results offer insights into the potential of compression moulding as a viable alternative for recycling cGF/APA6 laminates. Full article

Under normal conditions, the novel zinc blende beryllium oxide (zb BeO) exhibits in a metastable crystalline phase, which is less stable than its wurtzite counterpart. Ultrathin zb BeO epifilms have recently gained significant interest to create a wide range of advanced high-resolution, high-frequency, flexible, transparent, nano-electronic and nanophotonic modules. BeO-based ultraviolet photodetectors and biosensors are playing important roles in providing safety and efficiency to nuclear reactors for their optimum operations. In thermal management, BeO epifilms have also been used for many high-tech devices including medical equipment. Phonon characteristics of zb BeO at ambient and high-pressure P ≠ 0 GPa are required in the development of electronics that demand enhanced heat dissipation for improving heat sink performance to lower the operating temperature. Here, we have reported methodical simulations to comprehend P-dependent structural, phonon and thermodynamical properties by using a realistic rigid-ion model (RIM). Unlike zb ZnO, the study of the Grüneisen parameter γ(T) and thermal expansion coefficient α(T) in zb BeO has revealed atypical behavior. Possible reasons for such peculiar trends are attributed to the combined effect of the short bond length and strong localization of electron charge close to the small core size Be atom in BeO. Results of RIM calculations are compared/contrasted against the limited experimental and first-principle data. Full article

The color of flowers in Osmanthus fragrans is regulated by carotenoid metabolism. The orange-red variety, Dangui, is believed to have evolved from the yellow variety, Jingui, through a natural bud mutation. This study uses the Jingui cultivar ‘Jinqiu Gui’ (JQG) and its bud mutation cultivar ‘Huolian Jindan’ (HLJD) as materials, combining genome resequencing, ultrastructural observation, targeted metabolomics, and transcriptomic analysis to elucidate the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying flower color variation. Phylogenetic analysis confirms that HLJD is a natural bud mutation of JQG. Ultrastructural observations reveal that during petal development, chromoplasts are transformed from proplastids. In HLJD petals, starch granules degrade more slowly and exhibit abnormal morphology, resulting in chromoplasts displaying crystalline, tubular, and fibrous composite structures, in contrast to the typical spherical plastoglobuli found in JQG. Targeted metabolomics identified 34 carotenoids, showing significant increases in the levels of ε-carotene, γ-carotene, α-carotene, and β-carotene in HLJD petals compared to JQG, with these levels continuing to accumulate throughout the flowering process, while the levels of the cleavage products α-ionone and β-ionone decrease. Transcriptomic analysis indicates that carotenoid metabolic pathway genes do not correlate directly with the phenotype; however, 49 candidate genes significantly associated with pigment accumulation were identified. Among these, the expression of genes such as glycoside hydrolases (LYG036752, etc.), sucrose synthase (LYG010191), and glucose-1-phosphate adenylyltransferase (LYG003610) are downregulated in HLJD. This study proposes for the first time the pathway of “starch degradation delay → chromoplast structural abnormalities → carotenoid cleavage inhibition” for deepening flower color, providing a new theoretical model for the metabolic regulation of carotenoids in non-photosynthetic tissues of plants. This research not only identifies key target genes (such as glycoside hydrolases) for the color breeding of O. fragrans but also establishes a theoretical foundation for the color enhancement of other ornamental plants. This study investigated the effect of adding superhard ReB2 to atmospheric plasma sprayed (APS) coatings based on 60 wt% Al2O3 and 40 wt% ZrO2. The amorphous phases commonly present in such coatings are known to impair their performance. ReB2 was introduced as a crystallization nucleus due to its high melting point. ReB2 decomposes in the presence of moisture and oxygen into H3BO3, ReO3, HBO2, and HReO4. ReB2 was encapsulated with Al2O3 via metallothermic synthesis to improve moisture stability, yielding a powder with d90 = 15.1 μm. After milling, it was added at 20 wt% to the Al2O3-ZrO2 feedstock. Agglomeration parameters were optimized, and coatings were deposited under varying APS conditions onto 316L steel substrates with a NiAl bond coat. In the coating with the highest ReB2 content, the identified phases included ReB2 (2.6 wt%), Re (0.8 wt%), α-Al2O3 (30.9 wt%), η-Al2O3 (32.4 wt%), and monoclinic and tetragonal ZrO2. The nanohardness of the coating, measured using a Vickers indenter at 96 mN and calculated via the Oliver–Pharr method, was 9.2 ± 1.0 GPa. High abrasion resistance was obtained for the coating with a higher content of η-Al2O3 (48.7 wt%). The coefficient of friction, determined using a ball-on-disc test with a corundum ball, was 0.798 ± 0.03. After 15 months, the formation of (H3O)(ReO4) was observed, suggesting initial moisture-induced changes. The results confirm that Al2O3-encapsulated ReB2 can enhance phase stability and crystallinity in APS coatings. Full article

Objectives: This research focuses on the development of fabrication approaches for microparticles intended for controlled drug delivery. The primary objective is to identify the most suitable polymer type, particle size, and morphology for encapsulating a water-soluble crystalline drug. Optimizing these parameters may enhance structural stability and prolong the release of this active substance. Methods: The microparticles were fabricated through the encapsulation of a drug substance within a polymer carrier and employing polymer casting on prepatterned surfaces, followed by the loading of drug precipitates and the application of a sealing layer. The crystalline powder 1-allyl-2,5-dimethylpiperidol-4 hydrochloride served as the core cargo material, while the walls of these particles were composed of polylactic acid (PLA) and a poly (α-caprolactone) (PCL) in a 70:30 composition ratio. Results: The size and volume of the microparticles were found to be dependent on the geometric parameters of the template and the concentration of the polymer solutions. The study demonstrates the formation, physical dimensions, and particle count at varied polymer compositions and concentrations. The formation of the PLA and PCL mixture occurred solely through physical interactions. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical microscopy were employed to observe the appearance and physical dimensions of the microparticles. The obtained data confirm that tailored polymer compositions can yield consistent particle morphology and a suitable drug elution rate. Conclusions: The results indicate that microparticles sealed with an optimal polymer composition exhibit enhanced release properties. This finding highlights the feasibility of microencapsulation at precise ratios and concentrations of polymers to achieve the long-lasting effects of water-soluble drugs. Full article

Polydextrose Addition Improves the Chewiness and Extended Shelf-Life of Chinese Steamed Bread Through the Formation of a Sticky, Elastic Network Structure

This study explored the effects of adding a newly developed type of polydextrose on the appearance, sensory score, and textural parameters of steamed bread and the microstructure of dough, as well as the pasting, thermal, and thermal mechanical properties of high-gluten wheat flours. The results revealed that, compared with a control sample, 3–10% of polydextrose addition significantly increased the hardness, adhesiveness, gumminess, and chewiness of steamed bread, but other textural parameters like springiness, cohesiveness, and resilience remained basically the same. Further, in contrast to the control sample, 3–10% polydextrose addition significantly reduced the specific volume and width/height ratio of steamed bread but increased the brightness index, yellowish color, and color difference; improved the internal structure; and maintained the other sensory parameters and total score. Polydextrose addition decreased the peak, trough, final, breakdown, and setback viscosity of the pasting of wheat flour suspension solutions but increased the pasting temperature. Polydextrose additions significantly reduced the enthalpy of gelatinization and the aging rate of flour paste but increased the peak temperature of gelatinization. A Mixolab revealed that, with increases in the amount of added polydextrose, the dough’s development time and heating rate increased, but the proteins weakened, and the peak torque of gelatinization, starch breakdown, and starch setback torque all decreased. Polydextrose additions increased the crystalline regions of starch, the interaction between proteins and starch, and the β-sheet percentage of wheat dough without yeast and of steamed bread. The amorphous regions of starch were increased in dough through adding polydextrose, but they were decreased in steamed bread. Further, 3–10%of polydextrose addition decreased the random coils, α-helixes, and β-turns in dough, but the 3–7% polydextrose addition maintained or increased these conformations in steamed bread, while 10% polydextrose decreased them. In unfermented dough, as a hydrogel, the 5–7% polydextrose addition resulted in the formation of a continuous three-dimensional network structure with certain adhesiveness and elasticity, with increases in the porosity and gas-holding capacity of the product. Moreover, the 10% polydextrose addition further increased the viscosity, freshness, and looseness of the dough, with smaller and more numerous holes and indistinct boundaries between starch granules. These results indicate that the 3–10% polydextrose addition increases the chewiness and freshness of steamed bread by improving the gluten network structure. This study will promote the addition of polydextrose in steamed bread to improve shelf-life and dietary fiber contents. Full article

Polypropylene (PP), with its good physical, thermal, and mechanical properties and excellent processing capabilities, has become one of the most used synthetic polymers. It is known that the overall properties of semicrystalline polymers, including PP, are governed by morphology, which is influenced by the crystallization behavior of the polymer under specific conditions. The most important industrial PP remains the isotactic one, and it has been studied extensively for its polymorphic characteristics and crystallization behavior for over half a century. Due to its regular chain structure, isotactic polypropylene (iPP) belongs to the group of polymers with a high tendency for crystallization. The rapid quenching of molten iPP fails to produce a completely amorphous polymer but leads to an intermediate crystalline order. On the other hand, slow cooling yields a material with high crystalline content. The processing conditions that occur in practice and industry are between these two extremes and, in some cases, are even very close. Therefore, the study of limits in processability and the impact of extreme preparation conditions on morphology, structure, thermal, and mechanical properties fills a gap in the current understanding of how the processing conditions of iPP can be used to design the desired properties for specific applications and is in the focus of this research. The first set of samples (Q samples) was obtained by rapid quenching, while the second was prepared by very slow cooling from the melt to room temperature (SC samples). Testing of samples was performed by optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic dielectric spectroscopy (DDS), and mechanical measurements. Characterization revealed that slowly cooled samples exhibited a significantly higher degree of crystallinity and larger crystallites (χ ≥ 55% and L(110) ≈ 20 nm), compared to quenched samples (χ < 30%, L(110) ≤ 3 nm). Mechanical testing showed a drastic contrast: quenched samples exhibited elongation at break > 500%, while slowly cooled samples broke below 15%, reflecting their brittle behavior. For the first time, DDS is applied to investigate molecular mobility differences between processing-dependent structural forms, specifically the mesomorphic (smectic) and α-monoclinic forms. In slowly cooled samples, α relaxation exhibited both enhanced intensity and an upward temperature shift, indicating stronger structural constraints due to a much higher crystalline phase content and significantly larger crystallite size, respectively. These findings provide novel insights into the structure–property–processing relationship, which is crucial for industrial applications. Full article

Three liquid crystalline mixtures were investigated, consisting of compounds abbreviated as MHPOBC and 3F5FPhF6 with molar ratios 0.9:0.1 (MIX5FF6-1), 0.75:0.25 (MIX5FF6-2), and 0.5:0.5 (MIX5FF6-3). The presence of the smectic A*, smectic C*, and smectic CA* phases was observed in all mixtures. The hexatic smectic XA* phase, present in pure MHPOBC, disappeared quickly with an increasing admixture of 3F5FPhF6. Vitrification of smectic CA* was observed for the equimolar mixture, with the glass transition temperature and fragility index comparable to the pure glassforming 3F5FPhF6 component. Partial crystallization to conformationally or orientationally disordered crystal phases was observed on cooling in two mixtures with a smaller fraction of 3F5FPhF6. Broadband dielectric spectroscopy was applied to study the relaxation times in smectic and crystal phases. Vogel–Fulcher–Tammann, Mauro–Yue–Ellison–Gupta–Allan, and critical-like models were applied for analysis of the α-relaxation time in supercooled smectic XA* and smectic CA* phases. Full article

Background/Objectives: Increasing the solid-state landscape of an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) by generating new crystalline forms (e.g., polymorphs, cyclodextrin (CD) inclusion complexes, co-crystals, and salts) can yield products with significantly enhanced biopharmaceutical properties (especially increased water solubility), thereby improving API delivery and extending its lifetime. The aim of this study was the isolation of new solid forms of the poorly water-soluble non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug fenbufen (FBF), for which relatively few solid phases have been reported to date. Further motivation for the study is the recent finding that it has potential for repurposing to treat acute pancreatitis. Methods: Interventions for generating new solid forms of FBF included (a) polymorph screening with a variety of solvent media, (b) attempts to form solid inclusion complexes with the native cyclodextrins α-, β-, and γ-CD using various preparative methods, and (c) co-crystallization with a series of coformers to produce co-crystals and/or molecular salts. Results: No new polymorphic forms of FBF were identified, but screening with CDs resulted in isolation and characterization of a new solid inclusion complex with γ-CD. However, co-crystallization of FBF with the water-soluble coformer isonicotinamide yielded two new products, namely a 1:1 co-crystal and an unusual multi-component ionic co-crystal, whose aqueous solubility indicated significant enhancement of FBF solubility. Conclusions: Due to its extremely low water solubility, FBF presented challenges during the study aimed at modifying its crystalline form. However, two new supramolecular forms, a co-crystal and an ionic co-crystal, were isolated, the latter phase having potential for further formulation owing to its significantly enhanced solubility. Background: The peony (Paeonia suffruticosa Andr.), a globally valued woody ornamental species, suffers severe heat-induced floral damage that compromises its horticultural value. While the HSP20 proteins are critical for plant thermotolerance, their genomic organization and regulatory dynamics remain uncharacterized in the peony. This study aims to systematically identify the PsHSP20 genes, resolve their molecular features, and elucidate their heat-responsive expression patterns to enable targeted thermotolerance breeding. Methods: The genome-wide identification employed HMMER and BLASTP searches against the peony genome. The physicochemical properties and protein structures of the gene family were analyzed using online websites, such as Expasy, Plant-mPLoc, and SOPMA. The cis-regulatory elements were predicted using PlantCARE. Expression profiles under different times of 40 °C heat stress were validated by qRT-PCR (p < 0.05). Results: We identified 58 PsHSP20 genes, classified into 11 subfamilies. All members retain the conserved α-crystallin domain, and exhibit predominant nuclear/cytoplasmic localization. Chromosomal mapping revealed uneven distribution without lineage-specific duplications. The promoters were enriched in stress-responsive elements (e.g., HSE, ABRE) and in 24 TF families. The protein networks linked 13 PsHSP20s to co-expressed partners in heat response (GO:0009408) and ER protein processing (KEGG:04141). Transcriptomics demonstrated rapid upregulation of 48 PsHSP20s within 2 h of heat exposure, with PsHSP20-12, -34, and -51 showing the highest induction (>15-fold) at 6 h/24 h. Conclusions: This first genome-wide study resolves the architecture and heat-responsive dynamics of the PsHSP20 family. The discovery of early-induced genes (PsHSP20-12/-34/-51) provides candidates for thermotolerance enhancement. These findings establish a foundation for molecular breeding in the peony. Full article

Wound healing is a complex biological process that benefits from advanced biomaterials capable of modulating inflammation and promoting tissue regeneration. In this study, cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2NPs) were green-synthesized using Hemerocallis citrina extract, which served as both a reducing and stabilizing agent. The CeO2NPs exhibited a spherical morphology, a face-centered cubic crystalline structure, and an average size of 9.39 nm, as confirmed by UV-Vis spectroscopy, FTIR, XRD, and TEM analyses. These nanoparticles demonstrated no cytotoxicity and promoted fibroblast migration, while significantly suppressing the production of inflammatory mediators (TNF-α, IL-6, iNOS, NO, and ROS) in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 macrophages. Gene expression analysis indicated M2 macrophage polarization, with upregulation of Arg-1, IL-10, IL-4, and TGF-β. Aligned polycaprolactone/polylactic acid (PCL/PLA) nanofibers embedded with CeO2NPs were fabricated using electrospinning. The composite nanofibers exhibited desirable physicochemical properties, including porosity, mechanical strength, swelling behavior, and sustained cerium ions release. In a rat full-thickness wound model, the CeO2 nanofiber-treated group showed a 22% enhancement in wound closure compared to the control on day 11. Histological evaluation revealed reduced inflammation, enhanced granulation tissue, neovascularization, and increased collagen deposition. These results highlight the therapeutic potential of CeO2-incorporated nanofiber scaffolds for accelerated wound repair and inflammation modulation. Full article

Small heat shock proteins (sHsps) play crucial roles in organismal adaptation to stress tolerance. Sitodiplosis mosellana, a devastating insect wheat pest, undergoes long obligatory larval diapause to survive temperature extremes during summer and winter. To elucidate the function of sHsps in this process, two sHsp-encoding genes (SmHsp22.2 and SmHsp26.7) were characterized from S. mosellana, and their responsiveness to diapause and thermal stress, as well as their roles in cold stress, was analyzed. Both SmHsp22.2 and SmHsp26.7 possessed the canonical α-crystallin domain and lacked introns. Quantitative PCR indicated significant upregulation of SmHsp22.2 and SmHsp26.7 during diapause, especially in summer and winter. Notably, SmHsp22.2 exhibited higher expression in summer relative to winter, whereas SmHsp26.7 showed the opposite profile. Moreover, short-term heat shock (≥35 °C) in over-summering larvae or cold shock (≤−10 °C) in over-wintering larvae was found to trigger transcriptional upregulation of both genes, while prolonged temperature extremes (i.e., 45–50 °C or −15 °C) did not elicit a comparable response. RNA interference-mediated knockdown of both genes significantly increased the mortality of S. mosellana larvae under cold stress. These findings indicate the importance of both SmHsps in diapause and environmental adaptation in S. mosellana. Full article

This study explores the effects of Tricholoma matsutake-derived insoluble dietary fiber (TMIDF) on the pasting behavior, structural properties, and in vitro digestibility of rice flour. The incorporation of 5% TMIDF significantly increased the peak viscosity (from 2573.21 to 2814.52 mPa·s) by competitively adsorbing water and forming a dense transient network, while simultaneously reducing the final viscosity (from 1998.27 to 1886.18 mPa·s) by inhibiting amylose recrystallization. Multi-scale structural analyses revealed that TMIDF enhanced V-type crystallinity and limited enzyme access via a porous fibrous matrix. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and low-field nuclear magnetic resonance analyses confirmed that hydrogen bonding and water redistribution were key interaction mechanisms. TMIDF significantly lowered in vitro starch digestibility and increased resistant starch content by 16% (from 14.36% to 30.94%) through synergistic effects, including physical encapsulation of starch granules, formation of enzyme-resistant amylose-lipid complexes, and α-amylase inhibition (31.08%). These results demonstrate that TMIDF possesses a unique multi-tiered modulation mechanism, involving structural optimization, enzyme suppression, and diffusion control, which collectively surpasses the functional performance of conventional plant-derived insoluble dietary fibers. This research establishes a theoretical basis for applying fungal insoluble dietary fibers to develop low glycemic index functional foods, highlighting their dual role in improving processing performance and nutritional quality. Cinnamomum camphora chvar. Borneol essential oil (BEO, 16.4% borneol) is a by-product obtained during the steam distillation process used to produce natural crystalline borneol (NCB, 98.4% purity). This study aimed to compare the antibacterial activity of BEO and NCB against Staphylococcus epidermidis, and to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effect of BEO in vitro. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs), determined by broth microdilution, were identical for both BEO and NCB (0.5 mg/mL). Despite this, BEO exhibited stronger antibacterial activity, suggesting synergistic enhancement by other components. Mechanistic studies revealed that BEO disrupted the bacterial cell wall, causing leakage of nucleic acids and proteins, and ultimately bacterial death. In LPS-induced RAW 264.7 macrophages, BEO dose-dependently reduced the production of TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 (r = −0.9847, −0.9456, −0.9315). Network pharmacology, combined with primary and secondary factor analysis, was employed to identify anti-inflammatory pathways and key active compounds. Borneol contributed over 50% to the anti-inflammatory effect, followed by β-caryophyllene, limonene, camphor, and γ-terpinene. These findings highlight the potential enhanced bioactivity of BEO due to multi-component synergy. Full article

In this study, a poly [ε-caprolactam-co-bis(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate] copolymer (P (CL-co-BHET)) was synthesized from para-terephthalic acid (PTA), ethylene glycol (EG), and caprolactam (CL). The crystallization behavior and thermal stability of the copolymer were thoroughly investigated. With the aid of molecular simulation, this study investigated the variation in interchain hydrogen bonding in the copolymer, focusing on the direction and the number of hydrogen bonds. The results revealed a close relationship between the copolymer chain structure, the variation in interchain hydrogen bonding, and the crystallization behavior and thermal stability of the copolymer. The introduction of BHET segments disrupted the regularity of the PA6 backbone and hydrogen bonding, leading to a decrease in the melting point, crystallization temperature, and crystallinity of the copolymer. The thermal stability of the copolymers also decreased, and the crystallization form gradually shifted from the α-crystalline to the γ-crystalline phase. The findings of this study are significant for evaluating the crystallization behavior of polyester amides and for predicting and regulating the properties of polyesteramide polymers. Full article
