Prof. Dr. Andrew H. Sung Appointed Section Editor-in-Chief of Section “Computational Intelligence” in Computation
We are pleased to announce that Prof. Dr. Andrew H. Sung has been appointed Section Editor-in-Chief of the “Computational Intelligence” Section in Computation (ISSN 2079-3197). With an extensive background in scientific research and publishing, he will bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to this role.
Prof. Dr. Andrew H. Sung has worked for over 40 years at public research universities in the United States and is currently a professor in the School of Computing Sciences and Computer Engineering at the University of Southern Mississippi. He previously worked at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. He received his PhD from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. With over 260 publications, his research interests include computational intelligence and its applications; information security and assurance; bioinformatics and medical informatics; data mining and pattern recognition; social network analysis; petroleum exploration and reservoir modelling.
The following is a short Q&A with Prof. Dr. Andrew H. Sung, who shared his vision for the journal with us, as well as his views of the research area:
1. What about the journal appealed to you to make you want to take on the role of its Section Editor-in-Chief?
The journal covers a wide spectrum of topics and Computational Intelligence has been an active research area encompassing primarily nature-inspired computational paradigms such as neural networks and evolutionary computation, as well as fuzzy systems, linguistic modeling, and hybrid intelligent systems. Computational Intelligence has over the last few decades made tremendous contributions to the development of present-day AI systems and will continue to be of great interest and significance to Computation.
2. As one of our Section Editors-in-Chief, what do you think are the most important steps we can take to enhance the journal’s academic influence and international visibility?
Clearly, the most important step to enhance a scientific journal’s influence and international visibility is to publish high-quality, impactful papers and reach a worldwide audience. To that end, the journal should establish rigorous procedures for manuscript review and revision, impose high standards for acceptance, and strive to reach a larger readership.
3. Which research topics do you think will be of particular interest to the research community in the coming years?
I believe Computational Intelligence topics that have direct impact on, or relevance to, the research and development of AI—in theoretical, practical, commercial, social, safety, or whatever aspects—are likely to attract great interest from the research community in the next few years.
