Name: Prof. Dr. Zhonghua Gou |
Prof. Dr. Zhonghua Gou is a Full Professor of architecture at Wuhan University, where he has been advancing the frontiers of sustainable design and building performance research since 2021. Prior to this appointment, he served as a Senior Lecturer in architecture at Griffith University, Australia (2015–2020), and as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Faculty of Built Environment, University of New South Wales (2013–2014).
Prof. Dr. Gou has established himself as a leading voice in sustainable architecture, having produced over 300 peer-reviewed publications in international journals and successfully supervised more than 20 master’s and PhD students. His scholarly impact has been recognized through his designation as a Highly Cited Scholar in Architecture since 2020, and as a Highly Ranked Scholar in Green Building (Lifetime).
The following is a short Q&A with Prof. Dr. Zhonghua Gou, who shared his vision for the journal with us, as well as his views of the research area and open access publishing:
- What appealed to you about the journal that made you want to take on the role of its Section Editor-in-Chief?
The launch of MDPI’s Architecture journal is a significant development, as there are few dedicated journals in the field of architecture. This journal provides an invaluable platform for architecture communities to disseminate their research and scholarship widely. The new Section on sustainable design and building performance aligns perfectly with my research expertise, allowing me to contribute meaningfully to this critical area. Serving as the Section Editor-in-Chief not only enhances my professional growth but also enables me to support and uplift researchers and scholars within this vital field.
- What is your vision for the journal?
The field of architecture is evolving rapidly in response to societal changes. It is essential for journals to capture and reflect this evolution promptly. The open access model, coupled with a swift review and publication process, positions this journal as a leading platform for new and innovative architectural practices, scholarship, and theories. My vision is to foster a dynamic space where cutting-edge research can thrive, inspiring new ideas and practices that address contemporary challenges in architecture.
- What does the future of this field of research look like?
As global population growth and urbanization continue to escalate, the built environment faces unprecedented challenges. Architectural research must respond to these issues with both creativity and critical insights. I foresee a future where research in sustainable design and building performance increasingly incorporates advanced technologies and methodologies. This approach will be crucial in addressing the pressing energy and environmental challenges we face today, paving the way for a more sustainable future in architecture.
- What do you think of the development of open access in the publishing field?
The rise of open access publishing is transforming the landscape of academic research. In the field of architecture, it is vital to reach broader audiences beyond just academics in universities and research institutions. Open access facilitates the dissemination of research findings to diverse communities, inspiring real-world practices and making a tangible impact. This accessibility is crucial for advancing knowledge and fostering an inclusive dialogue around architectural innovation and sustainability.
We are confident that Prof. Dr. Gou’s academic background will help us continue to raise the prestige and quality of Architecture. We look forward to his contributions to the new Section.
