MDPI Academic Publishing Workshop Held at the AIMMLab at the University of Toronto on 21 November 2025

3 December 2025

On 21 November 2025, MDPI held an Academic Publishing Workshop at the Artificial Intelligence and Mathematical Modelling Lab (AIMMLab) at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, at the University of Toronto.

During this session, Dr. Barnaby Crook engaged in a productive exchange of ideas with Prof. Jude Kong and other participants regarding the ethical challenges and opportunities that artificial intelligence and machine-learning modelling bring to academic publishing practices.

Dr. Crook offered clear insights into how MDPI addresses the evolving landscape of academic publishing, ensuring ethical standards across all stages of publication, while promoting open access for the global scientific community, flexibility, timeliness, and rigorous peer review as MDPI's core values.

As a reflection of the workshop’s impact, Mr. Sherif Shuaib, Lab Manager at the AIMMLab, shared the following message of appreciation:
“Your presentations on How to Write a Research Paper and AI in Publishing were incredibly valuable to our team, researchers, and faculty. The practical guidance you shared on structuring manuscripts, navigating peer review, and maintaining research integrity—along with your thoughtful discussion on the challenges and opportunities of AI in scientific publishing—provided our team with clear, actionable knowledge… Thank you again for taking the time to engage with our team and for supporting the professional development of our trainees.” — Dr. Sherif Shuaib, on behalf of AIMMLab.

MDPI is grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the academic development of AIMMLab’s students, trainees, and faculty, and looks forward to future collaborations with the University of Toronto’s research community.
