Advanced Water Management for Sustainable Aquaculture
This special issue belongs to the section “Water, Agriculture and Aquaculture“.
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Aquaculture represents an important aspect of the global food chain, with a rapid growth in production in recent years, and yet its long-term development is associated with the sustainable management of water resources. The intensification of aquaculture systems brings various challenges, including the accumulation of metabolic wastes, the risk of disease outbreaks, and the potential for eutrophication in receiving ecosystems. Concurrently, the sector faces mounting pressure from climate change and competition for freshwater. This Special Issue aims to showcase innovative research and comprehensive reviews that address these pressing challenges. The overall goal is to create a platform for disseminating knowledge that bridges the gap between technological innovation and practical application, ultimately contributing to a more resilient, productive, and environmentally responsible aquaculture industry.
We invite contributions that explore cutting-edge technologies and holistic strategies for optimizing water quality, enhancing resource efficiency, and minimizing environmental impact. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the development of precision water quality monitoring using sensors and AI, advanced recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) designs, novel bioremediation and wastewater treatment techniques (e.g., biofloc, aquaponics, phytoremediation), and sustainable nutrient management strategies. Studies on the impacts of emerging contaminants (e.g., antibiotics, microplastics) and their mitigation are also welcome. Furthermore, we encourage submissions on integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA), life cycle assessment (LCA) of water management practices, and socio-economic analyses of adopting advanced systems.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Water is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
