Microplastics in Water and Wastewater

Dear Colleagues,

Milions of microplastics are discharged every day into the environment. These are primarily manafactured plastic particles as well as secondary microplastics generated as a result of the fragmentation and degradation of large plastic particles. Microplastics have been found in aquatic and terrestrial environments, including oceans, freshwater, drinking water, snow, sediments, and soil in agricultural as well as industrial areas. They were also identified in human blood and lungs. Thus, global interest in microplastics has been growing, particularly over the last 15 years. Road runoff and wastewater are regarded as the main sources of microplastics in surface water.

This Special Issue invites the submission of original research papers and review papers concerning the latest achievements in the broadly understood area of microplastics in water and wastewater. We welcome contributions on the evaluation of microplastics’ quantity and composition, in addition to the fates and transformations of plastic particles in natural water, drinking water, and wastewater. It includes ecotoxicological studies on the effect of plastic particles on aquatic organisms and studies on the role of microplastics in the transport and spread of other pollutants in the environment. Contributions reporting mass balances, the removal efficiency of micro- and nanoplastics in wastewater treatment plants, and the influence of plastic particles on biological wastewater treatment are of particular interest.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Water is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
