Rethinking Race, Racism and Ethnicity for Migration and Refugee Studies

Dear Colleagues,

This special issue invites contributions that use research and theory on migrants and refugees to chart new directions for race/racism and ethnicity studies.  Contributors are encouraged to explore how histories of migration and displacement have reflexively informed the meaning of race and ethnicity.  The reception of migrants and refugees, for example, tends to be overdetermined by the way they are categorized as racial and cultural “others.” But migrant flows are also conduits for sociopolitical dynamics and cultural narratives that complicate white/black or Western/nonWestern binaries.  There is also much to learn from the role that migrant mobilities and episodes of displacement have played in shaping new paradigms of race and ethnicity. The white/black binary, for example, can be understood as a product of colonial-era European migration that was set against the backdrop of the transatlantic slave trade. In a similar vein, the anti-foreigner racisms of the present day can be explained in light of mobility regimes that are specific to the post-Cold war era as well as histories of imperialism and settler colonialism that are inextricably intertwined with Asian, Latinx, Arab-Muslim and indigenous cultures.

Contributors are invited to use historical or contemporary research, as well as theoretical treatments, to explore any aspect of this dynamic relationship between migration, displacement and the social construction of race and ethnicity.

Contributions have to follow one of the three categories of papers (article, conceptual paper or review) for the journal and address the topic of the Special Issue.

For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a double-blind peer-review process. Societies is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
