Joint Communication and Sensing in Vehicular Networks

Dear Colleagues,

Joint communication and sensing (JCS) enables the sharing of frequency spectrum, hardware, and signal processing between communication and sensing systems, leading to the emergence of new radar capabilities by harnessing communication signals. This phenomenon is increasingly gaining significance within vehicular networks, where radio access technologies for connected vehicles can be leveraged to detect nearby targets without burdening the already constrained spectrum with dedicated radar signals. The primary goal of this Special Issue is to solicit original contributions related to JCS in vehicular networks, facilitating the exchange of research findings and deployment experiences in this domain. Additionally, it aims to explore the associated challenges and potential solutions, with a specific focus on pivotal enabling techniques, groundbreaking approaches, and real-world trials. Topics of interest encompass a broad range, including but not limited to:

• V2X communications in the sub-6~GHz band for sensing purposes;
• V2X communication at mmwaves and THz waves;
• Physical and radio access impact on detection capability and parameter estimation quality;
• Machine learning system design and processing for JCS in vehicular networks;
• Terahertz communications and sensing for connected vehicles;
• JCS in the optical spectrum;
• Resource allocation and channel estimation strategies for JCS in vehicular networks;
• Field trials experiments.
