Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Modern vehicles are complex systems that necessitate accurate, fast, and reliable multi-parameter sensing architectures and related algorithms to meet performance, reliability, safety, and comfort requirements. Each of the main functional systems of the vehicle (the engine, drive train, and battery pack) and sub-systems (braking, steering, cooling, suspension, electrical, exhaust, seating, and A/C systems) are equipped with sensors that gather a massive amount of data in real time for processing through key electronic systems, such as the Engine Control Unit (ECU), the Battery Management System (BMS), and the processing units that govern Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADASs).

Industry and academia are investing time and resources into R&D for innovative, efficient, responsive, and cost-effective on-board sensing solutions, capable not only of improving the overall performance and functionalities of automotive systems, but of advancing the state of the art in terms of safety and environmental footprint. This Special Issue aims to showcase the most recent advances and scientific findings in the design, implementation, and experimental validation of cutting edge technologies for automotive smart sensors and sensing nodes, both in terms of hardware and software, including data fusion and data-driven models/AI techniques, for present and next-gen applications in all kinds of vehicles (ICEVs, HEVs, EVs, FCEVs, and industrial/heavy-duty vehicles).

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Sensors and integrated sensor nodes for internal combustion engines;
  • Sensors and integrated sensor nodes for electrical motors;
  • Sensing solutions (HW+SW) for fuel cell electric vehicles;
  • Sensing architectures and related methodologies/data processing for braking, steering, cooling, suspension, electrical, exhaust, seating, and A/C sub-systems;
  • Sensing solutions (HW+SW) for driver drowsiness detection and driver comfort;
  • Sensor devices and data processing for ADASs;
  • Integrated sensors for battery pack/modules;
  • Sensing solutions (HW+SW) in time and frequency domain at the battery cell level;
  • Numerical processing and control in next-gen BMSs;
  • Wireless sensor networks in automotive applications;
  • Data-driven models and digital twins of automotive systems;
  • AI techniques based on offline and real-time data in automotive applications;
  • Data-driven and AI-based control system development.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sensors is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.
