New Perspectives in Integrated Photonics

Integrated photonics has emerged as a transformative platform enabling compact, energy- efficient, and high-speed optical systems that are redefining communication, computation, and sensing technologies. This Special Issue, “New Perspectives in Integrated Photonics,” presents state-of-the-art research and reviews that capture the latest developments and outline future directions in this rapidly advancing field.

The collected works span a wide range of topics, including advanced material platforms such as silicon, III–V semiconductors, Group IV alloys like GeSn and SiGeSn, and emerging two-dimensional materials. These materials offer unique opportunities for monolithic integration of light sources, modulators, and detectors on silicon, paving the way for CMOS-compatible photonic technologies. The issue also features advances in fabrication techniques, hybrid and heterogeneous integration, nonlinear and quantum photonic devices, and photonic circuits for data communication, computing, and biomedical sensing.

The contributions further address persistent challenges, including optical loss minimization, scalability, power efficiency, and system-level optimization. By fostering interdisciplinary collaboration among materials scientists, device engineers, and system designers, this Special Issue aims to inspire new innovations that drive the next generation of integrated photonic systems and applications.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Photonics is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
