Dear Colleagues,
Nutrition has emerged as a central component in the prevention and management of liver disease, extending well beyond the traditional focus on malnutrition in advanced cirrhosis. Growing evidence indicates that dietary patterns, nutritional status, and bioactive compounds play a key role in modulating disease progression, clinical outcomes, and response to therapy across the spectrum of chronic liver diseases. At the same time, major epidemiological shifts—such as the global rise in metabolic-dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, population aging, and increasing multimorbidity—are redefining nutritional vulnerabilities and therapeutic needs in hepatology.
This Special Issue aims to highlight novel nutritional strategies and nutraceutical approaches that target hepatic and extrahepatic pathways involved in liver health and disease. Alterations in body composition, sarcopenia, frailty, and chronic low-grade inflammation are increasingly recognized as important determinants of outcomes, often independent of conventional markers of liver disease severity. In this context, early and targeted nutritional interventions may offer opportunities to modify disease trajectories and prevent functional decline.
Particular attention is devoted to the gut–liver axis, where diet and nutraceuticals can influence gut microbiota composition, intestinal barrier function, and host–microbial interactions. In addition, scalable and personalized nutritional strategies may help address health disparities and complement pharmacological therapies in an era of increasing therapeutic complexity. By synthesizing basic, translational, and clinical research, this Special Issue seeks to promote a preventive, personalized, and system-oriented approach to liver health through nutrition.
