Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Recent research has highlighted the critical role of nutrition in maintaining brain and eye health, influencing cognitive and visual outcomes across the lifespan. The brain and retina are among the most energy-demanding tissues and depend on continuous oxygen and glucose supply. Owing to their high metabolic activity and sustained oxidative stress, both tissues are particularly vulnerable to nutritional imbalance, metabolic dysfunction, and ischemic injury. Disrupted oxygen and glucose delivery exacerbates oxidative stress, mitochondrial impairment, and inflammation, accelerating structural and functional degeneration. At the mechanistic level, nutrients and bioactive compounds modulate oxidative balance, inflammatory signaling, mitochondrial function, lipid metabolism, and cellular survival pathways. These processes contribute to neurodegenerative and ocular disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and ischemic cerebrovascular diseases. Accumulating evidence suggests that nutritional interventions delay disease onset, attenuate progression, and improve functional outcomes. However, the molecular basis of nutrition–brain and nutrition–eye interactions and their translation into effective preventive and therapeutic strategies remain incompletely understood. Therefore, this Special Issue will focus on advancing mechanistic insights and preventive and therapeutic strategies that explore the impact of nutrition on brain and eye health and degenerative processes.
