Dear Colleagues,
Recent industrial needs require increasingly efficient structures, which necessitate the production of multi-metal components with a range of properties. However, conventional welding techniques do not meet the manufacturing requirements of these components. Alternative solid-state joining technologies, such as friction- or impact-based processes, must therefore be considered. In the explosion welding process, which is a type of impact welding, a flyer plate is accelerated at high velocity against the target material to generate an interface that imparts special properties to the welded sample. Due to the short time scale, there is minimal interaction between the materials at high temperatures. This strongly reduces the formation of brittle intermetallic compounds, which is one of the main concerns when welding dissimilar materials. Moreover, as the influence of the welding process is confined to a very narrow band at the interface of the materials, similar and dissimilar welds with high-strength bonding and a minimal heat-affected zone can be produced.
In this Special Issue, we welcome articles focusing on the experimental and numerical aspects of explosion and shock welding, as well as the use of energetic materials in these processes. Methods of characterizing the surface and interface between metals remain of interest. We welcome articles on ferrous and non-ferrous metals, special configurations and material preparation methods, as well as their influence on the performance of the final products.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Metals is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
