Corrosion, Tribocorrosion, and Surface Modification of Steel and Alloys—State of the Art
This special issue belongs to the section “Corrosion and Protection“.
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
There is a growing need for materials that last longer and work well in tough conditions. This need is pushing the development of new surface technologies to protect steels and alloys, which often fail because of wear, corrosion, and simultaneous wear–corrosion (tribocorrosion). Steel and its alloys are the backbone of modern civilization, remaining some of the most essential materials in the world due to their combination of strength, versatility, and cost-effectiveness.
This Special Issue covers advances in metals, alloys, and surface modification, including how protective layers are controlled, are studied, and perform in real use. Surface engineering methods have long been used to give materials properties that the main alloy cannot offer by itself. Methods like thermal spraying, laser processing, PVD/CVD, and electrochemical treatments have opened new uses for structural metals, their alloys, and composites. The strong and customizable nature of modified surfaces makes surface engineering very appealing.
For these reasons, the process of surface modification by itself is significant for the final material structure and performance. The process, whether realized in single- or multi-step operations and based on controlled energy input, chemical precursors, or innovative hybrid technologies, allows for obtaining fully resilient surfaces without requiring additional post-processing operations.
In this Special Issue, we welcome articles that focus on innovative metals and alloys or surface modification methods and their influence on the final products’ performance against corrosion and tribocorrosion. Fully controllable, fast, and low-cost processes with high implementation potential that allow the production of high-performance protective surfaces remain of special interest.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Metals is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
