Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Plastic forming of metals is a cornerstone of modern manufacturing and drives continuous innovation in key industries including aerospace, automotive, energy, and precision engineering. With rapid progress in materials science, process innovation, and smart technologies, the field is undergoing transformative developments. This Special Issue, titled ‘Recent Advances in Plastic Forming of Metals,’ seeks to capture these breakthroughs by compiling leading-edge research and promoting scholarly dialogue and technological advancement. We welcome contributions on themes including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Advanced lightweight alloys (e.g., high-strength steel, titanium, aluminum, and magnesium alloys; nickel-based, cobalt-based, for aerospace engines and gas turbines) under cold, warm, and hot forming conditions, focusing on advanced processes, microstructure design, and service behavior mechanisms (under high temperature, corrosion, and fatigue conditions);
  • Precision micro-forming for micro- and nano-scale components;
  • Externally assisted forming techniques (e.g., electric, magnetic, acoustic fields) for extreme performance enhancement;
  • Multi-physics modeling and simulation for process design and optimization;
  • AI-driven and digital-twin-enabled intelligent forming control and quality prediction;
  • Hybrid and integrated manufacturing combining additive and conventional plastic forming processes.

We invite original research articles, reviews, and case studies from researchers and engineers worldwide. This Issue aims to present a comprehensive snapshot of current trends, connect research with industrial applications, and collectively steer the field toward more efficient, precise, and sustainable manufacturing futures.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Metals is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
