Chronic Kidney Disease: Current Challenges and Future Directions
This special issue belongs to the section “Urology & Nephrology“.
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Chronic kidney disease represents a major global health concern, as it is both an independent cause of morbidity and mortality and a strong risk factor for other diseases, particularly cardiovascular. It is well known that patients with chronic kidney disease are more likely to die from cardiovascular complications than to progress to kidney failure requiring renal replacement therapy. Unfortunately, the prevalence of chronic kidney disease continues to rise, primarily due to increasing rates of obesity and diabetes, as well as population aging. Currently, 14.2% of the adult population is living with this disease. Chronic kidney disease is the 9th leading cause of death and the 12th most common cause of DALYs. Despite simple and accessible screening methods, it often remains unrecognized, and despite evidence-based therapies aimed at slowing its progression and associated complications (RAS blockade, SGLT2 inhibitors, nsMRA, GLP1-RA), which unfortunately are not available to everyone, a residual risk persists, and the disease may continue to progress and lead to significant complications.
We invite our esteemed colleagues to contribute to this special issue of the journal Medicina with papers that enhance the understanding of the current challenges posed by chronic kidney disease and offer directions for the future approach to this condition. We invite high-quality original articles and comprehensive reviews. We hope that this special issue will serve as a valuable resource for clinicians and researchers dedicated to improving patient outcomes and advancing the field.
