Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The steel and metallic materials industries are undergoing a rapid transformation driven by digital manufacturing, sustainability requirements, advanced materials development and intelligent process control. Modern rolling processes are no longer limited to conventional deformation analysis but are increasingly integrated with real-time sensing, physics-based simulation, artificial intelligence and microstructure engineering.

This Special Issue, entitled “Smart Metal Forming and Advanced Rolling Technologies”, aims to provide a platform for researchers and industrial experts to present recent advances in rolling technologies, thermomechanical processing and intelligent manufacturing systems for metallic materials. Particular attention will be given to the integration of physical metallurgy, process analytics and industrial digitalization for improving product quality, productivity, energy efficiency and sustainability in modern steel manufacturing. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Intelligent Modeling and Physics-based Simulation
    • Finite element analysis, analytical modeling, constitutive equations and multi-scale simulations for rolling and thermomechanical processing.
  2. Digital Twin and Process Diagnostics
    • Process visualization, virtual sensing, IoT for smart rolling mills and intelligent automation technologies for smart manufacturing environments.
  3. Microstructure and Property Control
    • Recrystallization, phase transformation, texture evolution, grain refinement, residual stress and process–microstructure–property relationships.
  4. Sustainable and Energy-Efficient Manufacturing
    • Low-carbon rolling processes, energy-efficient manufacturing, lubrication technologies and resource optimization.
  5. Rolling Process Design and Industrial Applications
    • Strip rolling, rod and bar rolling, section rolling, plate rolling, shape control, roll wear prediction, dimensional accuracy and industrial case studies.

This Special Issue welcomes both fundamental research and industrial applications that contribute to the advancement of intelligent, sustainable and high-performance rolling technologies.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Materials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
