Special Issue Information

Dear colleagues,

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are presently being used in preclinical and clinical trials for their ability to promote tissue regeneration.

Oral tissues have been established to be rich in stem cells from distinctive sources: stem cells from the oral cavity are easily harvestable and have revealed a great plasticity toward the main lineages.

Oral-derived stem cells possess an extraordinary regenerative and therapeutic potential that could be investigated in numerous cell-based regenerative advances.

Oral MSCs are distinguished in the field of tissue engineering/regeneration for their multilineage differentiation potential and simple methods of acquirement.

These cells include periodontal ligament stem/progenitor cells (PDLSCs), dental pulp stem/progenitor cells (DPSCs), stem/progenitor cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED), gingival mesenchymal stem/progenitor cells (GMSCs), stem/progenitor cells from the apical papilla (SCAP), and dental follicle stem/progenitor cells (DFSCs).

The current Special Issue considers the use of advanced bioengineered in vitro models, such as microfluidics, organ-on-a-chip (OoCs), scaffolds, bioprinting, and organoids in stem cell research. The integration of MSCs into novel in vitro platforms may contribute enormously to clinical and fundamental research.

Microfluidics devices have been extensively utilized in the medical field and drug discovery process due to their ability to realize an interactive and dynamic cell microenvironment, extremely important to reproduce the cell and organ architectures in vivo. Recent studies have established that microfluidics tool demonstrate the ability to realize an interactive and dynamic cell microenvironment, extremely important to reproduce the cell and organ architectures in vivo. The main application of microfluidics is represented by OoCs technologies.

The integration of MSCs into novel in vitro technologies, such as microfluidics/OoCs, scaffolds, bioprinting, and organoids, can reproduce highly precise and in-vivo-relevant model systems for unlimited research applications, including fundamental studies, drug delivery, and disease models.

We invite authors to contribute with original research articles, reviews, and opinion letters focused on the use of novel technologies, such as microfluidics, organ-on-a-chip (OoCs), scaffolds, bioprinting, and organoids for stem cell applications.
