Dear Colleagues,
Highly porous adsorbent materials represent a critical frontier in materials science, playing a pivotal role in addressing some of the most pressing technological and environmental challenges of the twenty-first century, such as water scarcity, industrial pollution, and the need for efficient gas separation. The development of materials with exceptionally high surface areas and precisely engineered pore structures has opened new avenues for highly selective and efficient adsorption processes. In light of the global transition toward a circular economy and the urgent need for sustainable environmental remediation, research into novel methods of synthesis and functionalization of these materials has taken on particular significance.
The integration of modern synthesis methods with state-of-the-art characterization techniques has significantly accelerated the discovery of next-generation adsorbents, including metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and porous polymers. These advancements enable the design of materials with tailored properties capable of meeting future societal and industrial demands across diverse sectors, including energy storage, healthcare, and environmental protection.
This Special Issue aims to present and disseminate the most recent advances related to the synthesis, characterization, and applications of highly porous adsorbent materials. We welcome original research articles, short communications, and comprehensive review papers that contribute to the fundamental understanding and practical implementation of advanced porous systems.
Topics of interest for publication include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Innovative methods for the synthesis and modification of highly porous materials;
- Structural, thermal, and mechanical characterization of porous adsorbents;
- Bio-based and sustainable porous materials for environmental remediation;
- Advanced polymer composites and nanocomposites with adsorbent properties;
- Gas storage and separation (e.g., CO2 capture, hydrogen storage);
- Adsorbents for water treatment and the removal of emerging pollutants;
- Smart and stimuli-responsive porous systems;
- Recycling, upcycling, and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of adsorbent materials;
- Computational modeling and simulation of adsorption processes.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Materials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
