Aspergillus Infections, Diagnostics and Antifungal Treatment
This special issue belongs to the section “Fungal Pathogenesis and Disease Control“.
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
This Special Issue, entitled "Aspergillus Infections, Diagnostics and Antifungal Treatment", aims to bring together recent studies addressing major advances in the diagnosis and management of aspergillosis, a clinical entity caused by filamentous fungi of the genus Aspergillus that can present with a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations, ranging from mild allergic reactions to chronic or acute life-threatening invasive disease. This pathology holds particular relevance in the field of medical mycology, as it often presents with non-specific clinical manifestations and requires complex diagnostic procedures that combine clinical, radiological, serological, and microbiological criteria. Although traditional tests have significant limitations, non-invasive and molecular diagnostic tools have improved remarkably in recent years thanks to technological advances and show great potential, although a single, definitive test for effective diagnosis is still lacking.
The management of aspergillosis requires early diagnosis and appropriate antifungal therapy, while facing ongoing challenges such as the growing resistance to commonly used antifungal agents and the various comorbidities of affected patients. Recent research has focused on the development of new drugs with innovative mechanisms of action, advanced delivery systems, and immunomodulatory therapies designed to overcome these challenges. Immunomodulation is gaining increasing relevance, particularly in patients with immune deficiencies, as it aims to enhance the host’s defense system against the fungus and may act synergistically with antifungal treatment.
At the same time, this Special Issue seeks to include new perspectives on the pathology of this genus of filamentous fungi, which may contribute to a deeper understanding of its development and to an improved management of the infections it causes.
We invite the submission of review articles, original research papers, and short communications related to these topics.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Journal of Fungi is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
