Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Bone tumors pose an arduous challenge for modern medicine due to their complex nature, diverse histological types, and often elusive early symptoms. Many advances have been made in the field of bone cancer diagnosis and treatment.

This is an evolving topic with considerable future prospects.

In this Special Issue, our goal is to analyze the problem starting from the diagnosis to arrive at surgical treatments and radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

It is important to identify and classify the bone tumor before surgery and intraoperatively: bone tumor diagnosis is achieved by combining numerous imaging techniques such as X-rays, MRI, and CT scans to biopsy to differentiate various tumor types.

Surgical treatment of bone cancer, which in many cases is combined with chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy treatment, is a challenge for the orthopedist as it depends on multiple factors such as tumor site, bone tissue involvement, or the patient's life expectancy. Recently, new perspectives in bone tumor management are emerging through the development of targeted therapies, immunotherapy and genetic editing techniques.

We invite doctors and researchers to contribute their work and research to this Special Issue. We hope through this Special Issue to collaborate to achieve ever-innovative methods of bone cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Background/Objectives: In the surgical treatment of benign bone tumors, bone substitutes are widely used. However, each of them has its advantages and disadvantages. We decided to study the novel bioactive and osseoconductive HAP/β–glucan bone substitute. Methods: We qualified eight patients with enchondroma of the lower limbs for this study, who underwent marginal resection of the lesion with the use of a bone substitute—FlexiOss®. During the 12-month follow-up, a series of X-rays and bone scintigraphy were performed. Bone remodeling was assessed using the modified Neer scale (MNS), while functional results were assessed using the MSTS scale. Results: Very good functional results were noted in all patients—MSTS = 27–30. In the MNS, Score I was recorded in six cases, and Score II was recorded in two cases. Among the complications in the two patients, a clear serous discharge from the wound was observed. Conclusions: The use of the new HAP/β–glucan composite in the treatment of enchondroma initially shows good treatment results. Full article
