Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Head and neck cancer (HNC) remains a major global health challenge, accounting for more than 900,000 new cases and over 400,000 deaths annually worldwide. Despite advances in surgical techniques, radiotherapy, systemic therapy, and supportive care, survival outcomes have improved only modestly over recent decades. The increasing incidence of HPV-related tumors, the persistence of tobacco- and alcohol-related carcinogenesis, and the growing complexity of recurrent and previously treated disease demand continuous refinement in diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.

Recent years have witnessed substantial progress in imaging modalities, molecular characterization, minimally invasive surgical approaches, reconstructive microsurgery, immunotherapy, and personalized treatment planning. Moreover, greater attention is being paid to functional outcomes, quality of life, and long-term survivorship.

This Special Issue aims to present and disseminate the most recent advances in the diagnosis and treatment of head and neck cancer. We welcome original research articles, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and clinical studies addressing innovative diagnostic tools, surgical techniques, oncologic outcomes, reconstructive strategies, complications management, and multidisciplinary treatment approaches.

Topics of interest for publication include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Advances in imaging for head and neck cancer (MRI, PET/CT, radiomics, AI-based analysis).
  • Surgical innovations in oral cavity, oropharyngeal, and maxillofacial oncology.
  • Neck management and nodal metastasis patterns.
  • Prognostic factors and survival analyses.
  • Close/positive margins and their clinical impact.
  • Microsurgical reconstruction and functional outcomes.
  • Vessel-depleted neck reconstruction strategies.
  • Radiotherapy and chemoradiotherapy advancements.
  • Immunotherapy and targeted therapies.
  • HPV-related head and neck cancers.
  • Transoral robotic surgery.
  • Salivary gland cancers.
  • Facial paralysis in salivary gland tumors.
  • Salvage surgery and recurrent disease.
  • Complications management.
  • Quality of life and rehabilitation.
  • Translational and molecular research.

We look forward to receiving your contributions and fostering a comprehensive overview of contemporary challenges and innovations in head and neck oncology.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Journal of Clinical Medicine is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • Reprint: MDPI Books provides the opportunity to republish successful Special Issues in book format, both online and in print.
