Sports Medicine
A section of Journal of Clinical Medicine (ISSN 2077-0383).
Section Information
The Sports Medicine Section of the Journal of Clinical Medicine is dedicated to advancing the understanding, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of sports-related injuries and illnesses. However, sports medicine is not only for athletes; it is also relevant for the general population, healthy individuals, and individuals with chronic diseases, as well as special populations, such as children, the elderly, LGBTQ people, and individuals with disabilities. We emphasize that exercise is medicine, advocating for the use of physical activity as a powerful tool to improve health and manage chronic conditions.
This Section encompasses a multidisciplinary approach, integrating knowledge from fields such as exercise physiology, nutrition, biomechanics, psychology, cardiology, pulmonology, orthopedics, rehabilitation, physical therapy, gynecology, and almost any medical field of medicine to provide a comprehensive overview of sports medicine.
Key areas of focus include the following:
- Exercise prescription: Customized exercise plans to enhance health, manage chronic diseases, and improve overall fitness.
- Pre-participation screening: Comprehensive evaluations to identify medical conditions and risk factors, ensuring safe and effective participation in sports for all—from sick and highly disabled people to professional athletes.
- Injury prevention and management: Strategies for reducing the risk of injuries, early diagnoses, and innovative treatment options for common sports injuries.
- Rehabilitation and recovery: Techniques and protocols for effective rehabilitation, ensuring optimal recovery and return to activity.
- Nutritional strategies: The role and importance of food intake and composition as well as supplements as part of a healthy lifestyle and in conjunction with physical activity and athletic performance.
- Psychological issues: Motivational strategies to increase physical activity among sedentary individuals; incorporating physical activity as therapy for those with mental illnesses; and exploring mental health challenges in athletes, including stress management, performance enhancement, and the psychological impact of injuries.
This Section aims to provide cutting-edge research, case studies, and reviews that contribute to the growing body of knowledge in sports medicine. By bridging the gap between research and clinical practice, the Sports Medicine Section serves as an essential resource for clinicians, researchers, and practitioners dedicated to improving the health of all people and the performance of athletes at all levels.
