MDPI’s Journal Cluster of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Medicine

19 December 2025

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death globally. According to the World Health Organization, in 2021, ischemic heart disease was responsible for 13% of the world’s total deaths. Understanding the structure, function, and diseases of the heart and vascular system will enable the development of better preventative care as well as therapeutics to treat heart and cardiovascular diseases. Research in cardiology and cardiovascular medicine addresses a broad range of topics, including the mechanisms of heart disease, vascular biology, cardiac development, electrophysiology, and emerging therapies such as regenerative medicine and cardiovascular bioengineering. By combining fundamental and translational research while integrating various research areas such as physiology, anatomy, molecular biology, genetics, and clinical medicine, this field drives innovation in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cardiovascular disorders.

MDPI’s Cardiology and Cardiovascular Medicine journal cluster is dedicated to publishing high-impact research that advances our understanding of cardiovascular health and disease in order to improve patient outcomes. The aim of this cluster of diverse journals is to accelerate progress and foster collaboration while highlighting emerging topics within this field. Offering diverse open access journals, this journal cluster ensures that groundbreaking research in cardiology and cardiovascular medicine reaches a wide and relevant audience.

The six participating journals are as follows:

  • Journal of Cardiovascular Development and Disease (JCDD, ISSN: 2308-3425) provides cardiovascular scientists with a platform to publish their work in a swift and efficient way. Topics can range from studies designed to decipher the events underlying early heart development to studies focusing on the origins of congenital and acquired heart disease. Papers submitted to JCDD undergo a fast yet thorough peer review process. During this process, we apply strict ethical policies and standards. JCDD guarantees the fast dissemination of results to a large scientific audience and is led by its Editor-in-Chief, Prof. Dr. Thomas Brand;
  • Cardiogenetics (ISSN: 2035-8148) is an essential resource for general physicians, cardiologists, and geneticists. Exome sequencing, noncoding DNA, bioinformatics, micro-RNA, long-noncoding DNA, and epigenetics have entered our daily vocabulary, highlighting the importance of forming a “cardiogenetics team” working side-by-side, bringing the lab to the patients’ bed, and vice versa. A strong Editorial Board of active clinicians and scientists will support this new experience. Cardiogenetics publishes high-quality original research papers, review articles, short reports, news, and views, with the aim of connecting the scientific (bench) world to the clinical (bedside) world. Since 2011, the journal has seen increasing success. Cardiogenetics is led by its Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Giuseppe Limongelli;
  • Hearts (ISSN: 2673-3846) publishes the highest-quality material covering basic, translational, and clinical research in all areas of innovative science for cardiovascular medicine and at the interface of related disciplines. This journal is aimed at a wide audience of both practicing clinicians and researchers, including cardiologists, cardiac and vascular surgeons, anesthesiologists, electrophysiologists, clinical physiology experts, interventionalists, angiologists, specialists in internal medicine, pediatrics, nurses, and others interested in cardiovascular medicine. Hearts is led by its Editor-in-Chief, Prof. Dr. Matthias Thielmann;
  • Journal of Vascular Diseases (JVD, ISSN: 2813-2475) is an international, peer-reviewed, open access journal focusing on basic, translational, and clinical research on cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, and peripheral vascular diseases. It publishes research papers, reviews, editorials, communications, etc. Our aim is to encourage scientists to publish their experimental and theoretical results in as much detail as possible. Full details must be provided when publishing an experiment so that the results can be reproduced. Journal of Vascular Diseases is led by its Editor-in-Chief, Prof. Dr. Hans Henkes;
  • Cardiovascular Medicine (ISSN: 1664-204X) is dedicated to advancing knowledge on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, covering the full spectrum of cardiovascular medicine, including cardiology, cardiac and aortic surgery, angiology, hypertension, and related disciplines. Our goal is to position Cardiovascular Medicine as a trusted and important international journal for the entire “Heart Team”. Cardiovascular Medicine is led by its Editor-in-Chief, Prof. Dr. Peter Matt;
  • Kidney and Dialysis (ISSN: 2673-8236) is an open access, peer-reviewed journal that provides a dedicated platform for publishing cutting-edge research at the critical intersection of kidney health and metabolic-cardiovascular disease. The interaction between nephrology and cardiovascular medicine, nephro-cardiology is broad, complex, and clinically important. The journal focuses on the preservation of kidney health since the earliest stage of disease, when renal function is still normal. It also focuses on comprehensive treatment strategies from diet and medications including immunosuppression and anti-complement approaches to renal replacement therapy (dialysis and kidney transplantation), with particular emphasis on cardiovascular and metabolic complications associated with kidney disease. Kidney and Dialysis is led by its Editor-in-Chief, Prof. Dr. Francesco Locatelli.
