Dear Colleagues,
A large number of aquaculture-relevant teleost species exhibit pronounced sexual dimorphism across traits including body size, specific growth rate, secondary sexual coloration, and a suite of physiological and biochemical characteristics. This inter-sex phenotypic disparity has rendered mono-sex culture a highly cost-effective production strategy, serving as a persistent core driver for the development of precision sex manipulation technologies and industrial mono-sex selective breeding programs. Notably, fishes exhibit a wide diversity of sex determination mechanisms, ranging from genetic sex determination (GSD) to environmental sex determination (ESD), and also complex GSD+ESD systems. Distinct from mammals, where sexual fate remains largely irreversible after embryonic commitment, fish sexual phenotype can be significantly modulated by environmental and social cues. Consequently, understanding the mechanisms behind sex determination and differentiation in fish species not only provides critical biotechnological toolkits to control sex ratios for breeding and sustainable development in global aquaculture but also advances our fundamental understanding of vertebrate evolutionary plasticity. This Special Issue warmly welcomes original articles and review articles covering the genetic and epigenetic mechanisms governing the sex of fish, and applied studies on precise sex control techniques.

Fishes is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
