Dear Colleagues,
Recirculating Aquaculture Systems have emerged as one of the most promising approaches for the sustainable intensification of aquaculture. By minimising water consumption, reducing environmental impacts and improving biosecurity, Recirculating Aquaculture Systems offer significant opportunities to meet the growing global demand for aquatic food while addressing increasing environmental and regulatory challenges. Despite these advantages, achieving sustainable and economically viable Recirculating Aquaculture Systems requires advances across multiple disciplines, including system engineering, water quality management, microbial ecology, fish nutrition, health, welfare, disease prevention, energy efficiency and production management. Integrating these components is essential to optimise productivity, resource use and environmental performance. This Special Issue aims to gather high-quality original research papers, review articles and communications that address recent advances in sustainable Recirculating Aquaculture Systems. Contributions focusing on innovative technologies, biological processes and management strategies that improve the sustainability, resilience and efficiency of Recirculating Aquaculture Systems are particularly encouraged.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: Water quality management and treatment technologies; Biofiltration and microbial community dynamics; Fish nutrition in Recirculating Aquaculture Systems; Fish welfare and disease prevention in Recirculating Aquaculture Systems; Energy efficiency and resource optimisation; Waste valorisation and circular economy approaches; Integrated multi-trophic and circular production systems; Digital monitoring, automation and artificial intelligence in Recirculating Aquaculture Systems; Environmental sustainability; Species-specific adaptations to Recirculating Aquaculture Systems production; Economic performance and sustainability assessment; Innovative production strategies for commercial Recirculating Aquaculture Systems.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Fishes is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
